Geologists often classify ore textures on the basis of the origin of the rock in which they form and the grade of one or more minerals within the ore (Sinclair and Blackwell, 2002, pp 32-36).  Metallurgists, on the other hand, need to know how best to process the ore in order to extract the valuable minerals from it (Petruk, 2000). Geological classification has the following disadvantages:it requires the services of skilled economic geologists, of whom the supply has been dwindling for many years;it is subjective, depending on the perceptions of the individual geologists who make the classification; andit may relate only weakly to processing requirements of the ore. We describe methodology for automatic classification of ore textures from images of drill core. The images analysed are æclassifiedÆ images, in which a particular mineral (or mineral group) is assigned to each pixel. The new methodology is intended to:provide a quantitative and reproducible alternative to traditional geological texture classification,relate to process mineralogy of the ore, andimprove the ore-texture-related input to orebody domaining and geostatistical block models.

A pilot scale laboratory investigation of manual slurry sampling methods representative of those used in the minerals industry is described. Samples were taken from slurries made up from silica particles of various sizes and in various concentrations from a stirred tank and from the discharge lip of a rectangular launder. Sampling methods from the tank included immersion flasks and several configurations of a suction probe. The launder was sampled using a conventional narrow-mouth ladle and also with a 'mouth organ' stream splitter. Samples were analysed for overall solids concentration and size distribution and showed different but always significant and often large biases relative to the known overall composition of the slurry, the nature and extent of bias being dependent on pulp concentration, particle size, sampling method and sampling location. Results clearly show the very great difficulty of obtaining representative samples by simple sampling techniques, although the data suggest that errors can be reduced by using an appropriately designed and operated suction probe. Further work will be carried out with the objective of establishing guidelines for industrial sampling practice.

The paper discusses how comprehensive early characterisation of the ambient surface and underground environment including aspects related to heat, dusts, strata gas, and geologic/mineralogical factors enables incorporation of the right ventilation and non-ventilation controls at a study level to mitigate the risks identified.

In evaluating the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system for any mine, a number of options are available for each of the dig side, transport and dump side operations. Some of them are moreappropriate than others; given the pit arrangement, the material being handled and the rates at which it needs to be moved. This paper seeks to document the options that might be employed, and to rank them in terms of their applicability at any mine and their practicality overall, with a view to nominating those that would be most suitable for further study.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

Geometallurgy is an emerging, cross-disciplinary field that integrates spatial models of rock properties with time-based outcomes of mining and treatment processes. Geometallurgical variables include any rock property that has a positive or negative effect on the business. Some of the more critical geometallurgical variables include recovery, grindability, throughput, power consumption, mineralogy and content of deleterious materials. These variables drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way and thus geometallurgy has potential to positively impact on the value of strategic and tactical decisions across many mining organisations. Geometallurgical models, like traditional grade-only models are based on samples collected from the mineralised and non-mineralised regions of the deposit. The nature of some non-grade variables, particularly those that are dependent on the ore treatment processes, requires special consideration during sampling and subsequent spatial modelling. Failing to objectively consider the characteristics of variables may seriously compromise the validity of the sample selection, sample treatment, data models and the subsequent decisions. In addition to addressing the vexed question of collecting an æunbiased and representativeÆ sample, the sampling and modelling approach must consider issues of scale, both geostatistical support and also the relationship between bench-scale data and operational-scale mineral processing performance. This paper proposes a framework (the Primary-Response framework) for the classification of geometallurgical variables. This framework is designed to assist with developing sampling approaches and identifying the most appropriate spatial modelling approach. The proposed framework can also help identify the risks associated with designing, sampling and modelling of both types of geometallurgical variables. The Primary-Response framework divides variables into two categories; primary variables and response variables. How a variable is classified in this framework depends on the degree to which the variable reflects either an intrinsic attribute of the rock (æprimaryÆ) or its response to measurement processes (æresponseÆ). Depending on the classification in this framework, appropriate sampling and modelling decisions can be made to minimise the risk associated with the incorrect treatment of the variable. In particular, the authors argue that for response variables, the approach taken to building spatial models may need to be different to conventional linear averaging approaches (for example kriging).

The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. Most mineral products exported from Australia to Japan, with the notable exception of coal, are purchased with weight and quality determined on discharge. Sampling of imported minerals for purpose of payment is done at facilities owned and operated by the purchaser. The selling shipper is represented at the weighing, sampling and testing by an independent inspection group who supervises the whole procedure. Sampling and testing are done within the provisions of the contract between the two parties, and normally in accordance with the relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). These JIS specify such things as the number and mass of increments to be taken; the practice of taking these increments; the method of determination of moisture, size distribution and quality. The JIS concerned with sampling however, are meant to be basic guides rather than rigid rules. Hence sampling and testing practice varies from plant to plant. In general Japanese sampling facilities and methods are elaborate and efficient. Opportunity is given for the discussion of varying technical viewpoints between consumer and shipper. However the resolution of differences and the implementation of changes normally takes a long time. Such discussions seem best reduced by prior contract agreement on reasonable specifications and detailed testing methods. The independent inspectors

At 9.45 pm on Thursday, 12 July 1962 glass began to flow in an endless stream from a massive melting tank in a new Whangarei factory and a vital new industry was born û right on schedule. It wasn't good glass. It was ridged. It cracked. It rippled. It obstinately refused to emerge upstairs in the cutting room in one solid continuous sheet. But all through the night, drawing speeds were adjusted, temperatures changed. And on Friday morning, at 8:30, it finally came through as sheet û not perfect as yet, but sheet glass all the same. The rest is only a matter of time. Unfortunately, the buoyant enthusiasm displayed by the founders of the sheet glass industry in New Zealand, and the technical expertise of their European consultants, failed to bring the glass quality up to commercially acceptable standards and within six months, the company was in receivership. Taking over the role of producing New Zealand's sheet glass requirements, New Zealand Window Glass Company was formed as a partnership between two companies with long experience in sheet glass manufacture û Pilkington Brothers (NZ) Limited and Australian Consolidated Industries Limited. This paper sets out to identify the raw material requirements and controls necessary for the successful manufacture of sheet glass, and the availability and supply of suitable materials for use at Whangarei.

A method that optimises mining complexes that are comprised of multiple processing destinations, open pits and underground operations is presented. Mining, blending, processing and transportation decision variables are simultaneously optimised while accounting for geological uncertainty. The method uses a simulated annealing algorithm at different decision levels to generate a stochastic-based extraction sequence and processing policies. The first grant of land rights in Australia was pursuant to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. That Act has been at the core of the dispute between land rights and miners' rights. The mining industry believes that the Act, in giving a right of veto to Aborigines with respect to exploration and mining on Aboriginal land, has been responsible for a stagnation in exploration amd mining activity in the Northern Territory. In February 1985 the Commonwealth Government released for public comment its preferred model for national land rights legislation. The model has been opposed by the mining industry because it believes, first, that land rights is a matter which should be left to the States and, secondly, that the detailed mechanisms contained in the model constrain the industry in the manner of the Northern Territory legislation. Aboriginal leaders have opposed the model because it does not, in their view, measure up to undertakings given by the Commonwealth Government and, in addition, it provides for amendments to the Northern Territory legislation which are likely to result in the loss of the Aboriginal veto right. Are land rights and miner's rights compatible? The answer is yes provided all parties, including Governments, are prepared to talk and compromise and Governments recognise that the grant of land rights and any control by the Aboriginal people of exploration and mining on their land is not a substitute for raising the living standards of Aborigines as a significant group of disadvantaged Australians.

The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.
