From time to time efforts have been made to classify rocks according to their hardness, toughness and abrasiveness, and to use these classifications to provide an indication of the ease or difficulty with which they may be drilled. However, rocks classified as of similar type on this basis may vary considerably in their .resistance to the penetration of a rock drill bit due to differences in their physical state.For instance, fine grained rocks of granular texture are more difficult to drill than equivalent' rocks of coarser structure, altered rocks drill more readily than unaltered ones, and silicified rocks usually exceedingly hard and tough may be so shattered by movement as to be drilled at a rate comparable to quite soft rocks. This paper is intended to give a general review of current gold extraction technology for free-milling or non-refractory auriferous ores. Fundamental process concepts and some of the differences between the current technologies is referred to. Typical flowsheets and layouts are provided and it is demonstrated that technology for extracting free-milling gold is relatively simple. For environmentally sensitive areas such as encountered in New Zealand relevant cyanide decay and destruction technology is also discussed. Brief mention is made of some likely future innovations. Finally reference is made of New Zealand's previous significant contribution to gold extraction technology. These contributions were pioneering ranging from the cyanide leaching of gold to adsorption by carbon and precipitation by zinc. New Zealand has not allowed its potential gold projects to develop at a rate commensurate with the rest of the world thereby stifling its renowned innovative approach in this technology. It is time for New Zealand mining to recognise its unique opportunities in developing gold extraction technology and again take a rightful place in leading the way.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine Project is now fully operational and into its second year of operation. Because of its location in the sensitive Coromandel Peninsula , strict water management and environmental requirements had to be met. This led to the development of new technologies for cyanide recovery and the adoption of advanced water management and water treatment systems. This paper discusses the water management and treatment system adopted for contaminated water at Golden Cross and provides data on the operational history to date.

The Indonesian province of Papua is a remote jungle-clad region covering the western half of the mountainous island of New Guinea. Despite being relatively under-explored to this day,Papua is home to the greatest mineral success story of the 20th century. The Grasberg/Ertsberg minerals district atop the central dividing range contains the worldÆs largest reserve of both copper and gold (Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, 2002). With large mines at Ok Tedi,Por gera and Lihir,and many well-delineated resources such as Frieda River,Wafi and Hidden Valley, neighbouring Papua New Guinea,the eastern half of New Guinea has enjoyed sustained exploration campaigns for gold and copper since the mid 1960s. The combined Grasberg and PNG exploration successes can be measured in terms of ounces of gold produced over the last decade versus available landmass,conf irming the island of New Guinea and surrounding islands as a world-class destination for gold explorers. Yet despite this obvious regional prospectivity and the profitability of the Grasberg operation, a sustained exploration effort in the Papua province in Indonesia has not been achieved. Periodic political constraints, poor infrastructure, high costs, operational challenges, social and environmental concerns and lack of immediate exploration success often impact exploration investment decisions. Accordingly a lesser number of mineral occurrences have been documented in Papua compared to those seen along tectonic strike in geologically similar Papua New Guinea.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

There is very little in Australian mining law that sets out the rights of mining tenement and exploration licence holders as against other parties who wish to carry out ground or aerial surveillance over those areas.There have already been several legal actions arising out of this lack, and more can be expected as the public places more rigorous constraints on corporate and individual behaviour. Field personnel, who are mainly fairly junior and less experienced, are entitled to some guidance from the minerals industry, guidance which up to now appears to have been either lacking or covering such a wide range of standards from corporation to corporation as to be virtually useless.Because each State writes its own laws there is no consistency, and the laws generally are lagging behind developments in the industry. In particular, the practice of granting mining tenements for sporadic exploration, a practice that is a leftover from much earlier mining law, has dotted the Australian continent with unattended and unmarked or poorly marked tenements that are difficult to find but confer on the holder prior rights to the minerals under them. Entry onto those areas in most jurisdictions is an offence and their existence compromises the efforts of regional explorers.This clearly unsatisfactory situation requires remedying, which is the purpose of these proposals. A more systematic approach to the granting of reconnaissance, regional and detailed exploration, mining, and retention rights will eliminate much of the problem. For the rest, a code of practice needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specific engineering design criteria, which fully details the proposed method of exploitation. These criteria have not in general been taken into serious consideration when leaseholders have reported reserves in the past. In fact, many "reserve" figures quoted are probably more correctly classified as geological resources. The industry now recognises that it is necessary to take into consideration not only grade and mill recovery factors, but also likely mining and processing costs as well as the current market price for the commodity. Once having estimated those costs which are applicable to the resource under study, they can be deducted from the gross inherent worth of the orebody to result in an estimate of the potential net revenue. Through a process of interactive trial mine designs and evaluation, reserves can be quantified to provide an estimate of the available recoverable economic reserves given a set of assumed cost and operational parameters. It follows then, that the available economic reserve recoverable from a given resource will vary from time-to-time as cost and price factors vary in response to changing technology and economic factors. A methodology is described which may be used to derive economic recoverable reserves based on a computerised model of the geological resource data and appropriate economic and operational cost algorithms. Examples are provided from both coal and gold studies to illustrate the impact of economic criteria on the magnitude of the reserve figure reported for each project.

Results from current NERDDC funded research into the geotechnology of highwall trench mining methods have clear implications for mine planners in the areas of blast design, trench shape, location of the surcharge spoil and remnant coal pillar design.Adoption of successful smooth wall blasting techniques not only removes safety hazards from the trench face, but limits development of bedding partings at the seam contacts that interrupt the smooth transition of stress across the coal seam.

Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. Other advantages include the ability to alert operators about the arrival of difficult ores and a better understanding of the ore handling systems.This paper describes the installation and use of the system at Kittilä and details some of the geometallurgical relationships that have been developed using the data collected so far.CITATION:La Rosa, D, Rajavuori, L, Korteniemi, J and Wortley, M, 2014. More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. Magnetic methods have for a long time been used in the search for iron ore. In fact the first recorded geophysical prospecting was the use of a magnetic compass to locate iron ore in the Kuruna region in Sweden as early as 1640.The largest magnetic anomaly discovered, about 700,000 gamma-s, is in this region.The enormous deposits in Russia in the Kursk region, where the ore consists largely of magnetite, were discovered by magnetic methods. Heiland estimates the proved reserves at 290,000 million tons and the additional potential deposits at twice this amount.These magnetite ores Show extremely high magnetic anomalies and consequently very insensitive instruments could be used to survey them. The first aerial magnetic surveys were carried out in this area in 1928.Large areas of the iron ore producing regions in Norway, Sweden and the United States have been covered by magnetic surveys in the past 30 years, much of the work being started after the first World War.In every major iron ore producing country, except Australia, extensive magnetic surveys have been, or are, carried out with the purpose of extending the reserves of ore. Australia is indeed fortunate that the depletion of iron ore reserves and the location of new deposits has not become an urgent problem. Nevertheless, some minor reconnaissance work has already been carried out in Australia, and the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics is contemplating a more extended aerial magnetometer survey in the Middleback Ranges area. Pulp rheology plays a critical role in fine mineral flotation. Yield stress and apparent viscosity are two important rheological parameters affecting mineral flotation recovery. In this paper, the concept of pulp rheology and its measuring method are presented. The main factors, such as particle size, pulp concentration, mineral types, pulp temperature, inorganic salts, that affect the pulp rheology are systematically reviewed, and then followed by the discussion of the relationship between pulp rheological properties and flotation performance. Generally, high pulp apparent viscosity and yield stress values have been found to have an adverse effect on flotation recovery. In addition, due to the hetero-coagulation between the valuable mineral and gangue mineral, the pulp of mixed ore shows higher viscosity than that of the single mineral slurry. This paper is expected to provide some references for the efficient upgrading of low-grade and complex ores from the perspective of pulp rheology.

This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.

The subject is considered primarily from the university point of view and relates more to the disciplines of mining and mineral processing than to geology or perhaps metall- urgy, but the conclusions have wider implic- ations. The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Some recent Prospectuses are used to provide examples of their misinterpretation and misapplication.
