Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.

A critical concern of any mining company today is its relationship with the different stakeholder groups impacted by the operational activity û communities, unions, vendors, local partners and competitors, local and federal governments, interest groups and non-government organisations. What ten years ago would have gone unnoticed, now, and even more so in the future, can drastically impact the profitability and even existence of a mining operation. This paper describes the development and delivery of a new paradigm for creating effective external stakeholder relationships. We report on the actual measurable results of an integrated and highly complex initiative led by Lonmin Plc (Lonmin) and Landmark Education Business Development (LEBD) that significantly altered the nature of the relationship with the stakeholders. Given the nature of the long-term investment required in a mining operation, any breakdowns or surprises in its relationship with external stakeholders brings with it the potential for major loss. The transformation of executive and senior management and community leadership was required to enable them to be effective in managing this complex set of circumstances.

The most frequently applied project evaluation criteria are the Net Present Value, the Internal Rate of Return, and the Pay Back Period. Unfortunately, the Internal Rate of Return and the Pay Back Period, if interpreted according to their traditional definitions, easily produce results which contradict the Net Present Value. The reasons for the Net Present Value incompatibility of the two criteria are that these criteria have not been adequately defined and so new, complete definitions are recommended. The concept of the True Rate of Return is proposed as a substitute for the interest rate that the Internal Rate of Return has been believed to represent. The redefined Internal Rate of Return and Pay Back Period criteria, as well as the True Rate of Return are all Net Present Value compatible and can, therefore, serve as independent project evaluation criteria. Also, the correct approach to the evaluation of mutually exclusive alternatives and the status of the often neglected borrowing projects in project evaluation are found to be quite important.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.

Shoshonite suite (absarokite-shoshonite-banakite) and adakite-hosted epithermal Au deposits are a feature of circum-Pacific magmatism. Fijian examples include Tavua (Emperor) and Tuvatu on Viti Levu. New discoveries of shoshonite suite and adakite-hosted epithermal Au mineralisation have been made in the southern Yasawa Islands and in central-northern and central-western Viti Levu. The Fijian shoshonites define four NE–SW trending suites. The oldest is the northern 7.9–5.0 Ma Yasawa suite, followed by the 4.7–3.5 Ma Sabeto–Tavua–Rakiraki suite in northern Viti Levu, the 4.7–4.2 Ma Yanuca–Vatulele suite approximately 20 km south of Viti Levu and the 3.4 Ma Astrolabe suite approximately 75 km further south. Shoshonite suite lithologies with 3.8–3.0 Ma ages also occur in the Lomaiviti islands between Vatu-Cake and Moala, to the east of Viti Levu, defining a trend oblique to the NE–SW shoshonite belts. Seatura, a 3.3–2.8 Ma ocean island basalt (OIB) volcano, sits at the northern end of the Lomaiviti trend shoshonites. Trace element/isotopic chemistries indicate that shoshonite arc magma genesis involved the melting of a hydrated supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and also a lower mantle-derived plume (OIB) component. The upwelling plume provided heat for melting and possibly Au enrichment. Accessing the melt generation zone associated with the plume required a slab conduit or window. Such slab windows form by tearing during subduction or occur at slab edges. Adakites form by plume-induced slab melting. The four NE–SW Fijian shoshonite suites are interpreted to occur in back-arc extensional zones above a slab window (tear) that migrated southward during rollback of the New Hebrides–Vanuatu subduction zone. The plume (Seatura OIB) that is interpreted to have caused mantle wedge melting and formation of the Lomaviti trend shoshonites was focused along the interface between the north-dipping Vanuatu–New Hebrides subduction zone and the west-dipping Tonga subduction zone, which we have seismically imaged at approximately 400 km depth. In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

A proprietary hydrometallurgical ammonium chloride process for the recovery of not only zinc, but also copper, lead and silver from sulphidic zinc-rich concentrates has been developed at bench scale by CENIM and INETI (ex-LNET) as part of a research project supported by the Commission of the European Community (DGXII). This paper deals with the innovative chemical aspects applied to this chloride process and also with the more relevant data relating to mass balance, heat balance and process economics. Under mild temperature and oxygen pressure leaching conditions it is possible to extract practically all the zinc together with the other metals of interest and to precipitate simultaneously the solubilised iron fraction as goethite. The pH is kept close to neutrality in spite of the ammonia released in the leaching of the non-ferrous sulphides. A buffer effect is observed mostly due to the formation of zinc ammines which are very soluble in this medium. The zinc is further extracted by D2EHPA, the acidity being neutralised by the ammonia. Most of the ammonium chloride is naturally regenerated in this step. The zinc is recovered as zinc cathodes in a conventional sulphate electrowinning circuit. All the main raw material consumptions excluding the concentrate, such as oxygen, lime and ammonium chloride are linked to the sulphate formation in the leaching step which must be kept as low as possible by decreasing the reaction time under neutral conditions. The process analysis is complemented by the economic evaluation of a reference case. Difficulties encountered in finding a more convenient method of assessing the economics of the process in the absence of a reference price for a complex sulphide concentrate are examined and discussed. The reason why this analysis was performed with a much more optimistic metal prices scenario is also highlighted. The process economics are primarily dependent on the zinc market quotations and of course on the concentrate cost. Around 70 per cent of the total revenue is due to zinc sales. Assuming an internal rate of return of 17 per cent, the price of the concentrate can be as high as 255 $US/t for a plant capacity of 320 000 t/y (90 000 t/y of zinc).

Although the Pressure Acid Leaching (PAL) of nickel laterites has been conducted at Moa Bay, Cuba, since the early 1960s, the commissioning delays generally encountered by the æsecond generationÆ of PAL lateritic nickel producers in the late 1990s have demonstrated the potential complexity of the PAL process and the importance of technical risk management in maximising the realised project value. This paper describes some of the strategies used by the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) to manage the technical aspects of the Ravensthorpe project risk. Central to these strategies is the use of Front End Loading (FEL) to deal with issues early in the development phase, when changes to the project structure can be made most effectively and cheaply. Such an approach requires a management philosophy that recognises risk as a potential cost, which accepts responsibility for dealing with risk, and which is prepared to provide adequate resources for risk management.

Using a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a long vortex finder as the separator, a batch sizer was developed for the fast comparative sizing of the coarse solids normally encountered in mineral pulps.Operating times as short as 2 or 3 min gave separations ranging from 16 mesh down to the subsieve sizes.Reproducibility was good and sensitivity was adequate for most applications.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. A common problem for many mines is insufficient total primary airflow or insufficient airflow in the correct places as the mine changes over its life. This has a number of impacts on the business operation and may result in the need for a major and unexpected capital upgrade of the system, cancellation of a planned production increase, reduction in production targets, increased operating costs, failure to provide contracted metals to customers or acceptance of substandard conditions in the workplace. In some cases, it can even result in premature closure of the mine. In recent times, higher metal prices have given an expected economic boost to many mines, potentially prolonging their life but simultaneously requiring the mine to develop to deeper depths or requiring assets such as shafts and fans to have their service life extended. Insufficient primary airflow is a particular problem in deeper mines as the ventilation circuits become longer, more convoluted, have higher shock losses and the actual airflow requirements increase due to a combination of leakage, dispersion of the workings and the problems of managing the additional heat loads due to higher virgin rock temperatures and autocompression. This paper discusses the reasons why mines experience unexpected shortfalls in primary ventilation capacity with its associated impacts on metal targets, profits and frequently on the health, safety and morale of the workforce, as well as its productivity.
