Active explosion barriers are used to contain and suppress a methane gas and/or coal dust explosion propagation, including localised mine fires. Early research indicated that these active explosion barriers could be used on a mechanised cutting machine, making it the only technology that could suppress an explosion during its propagation phase at the cutting face. Thereby not only adding protection during mining operations but also reducing the development of toxic gases, fatal temperature increase and fatal overpressure build-up. During their evolution over the last two decades, further advantages of Active explosion barriers were proven in mine operations in countries such as South Africa and China. Characteristics such as effectivity, efficiency, mobility and space restrictions allow these systems to be used in various locations within a mine operation, including highwall operations. This improved technology contribution to safer coal mining was recognised by mine operators, workers and regulators. The Queensland’s Recognised Standard 21 (Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), 2021) stipulated active explosion barriers as a technology to ensure the safety within their underground coalmines. The mobility and flexible implementation of the active explosion barriers allow a feasible and practical solution for all critical locations for explosion and fire management in an underground coalmine. The conformance to the Recognised Standard can be achieved all underground coal mining operations such as Bord and Pillar, and Longwall mining. This paper describes the conformance, implementation and use of Active explosion barriers for Longwall mining and development as well as Bord and Pillar mining in Queensland’s underground coalmines.

A process for the recovery of cobalt from a speiss produced at Sulphide Corporation is presented. The speiss is leached in oxygenated sulphuric acid to dissolve the metallic iron at a pH of around 4. The resultant iron (11) is subsequently oxidized in the leaching vessel and precipitates as goethite. Acid is regenerated in the precipitation allowing dissolution of further speiss. Subsequent to the conversion of most of the iron in the speiss to goethite, conditions become sufficiently oxidizing to dissolve cobalt. Cobalt is not co-precipitated under the leaching conditions, yielding a pregnant solution containing the cobalt and some iron (11). The principal advantage of such a process is the significantly lower acid consumption over that obtained by complete dissolution followed by selective precipitation. An impure product of cobalt hydroxide can be obtained from the pregnant solution by neutralization.

The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. Recent lignite investigations indicate their potential as a strategic long-term fuel resource. This potential however would be determined not only by lignite quantity and quality, but also by economic, physical and social resources required to support it. The following discussion uses the example of a typical lignite mining operation to review the major resource requirements. While recognising that the implications of supplying those resources may be as important as their actual existence, this paper has purposely omitted such discussion as this will be one of the main target areas for the next phase of investigations.

Project Hobson involves the replacement of an existing 90-year-old above-ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which is nearing the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally-lined bored tunnel. The $118 M project will offer several benefits to the owner, Watercare Services Ltd, and the local community:provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, andremove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes. The geology in the region is a sedimentary formation, which has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the nearby city centre. The geology along the alignment is dominated by two palaeovalleys which have been infilled with a combination of marine alluvium and volcanic deposits. Watercare Services Limited has elected to manage and share tunnelling risk through, among other key measures, the implementation of a geotechnical baseline report (GBR); one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. This paper describes the general principles behind the use of a GBR, the development of the GBR used in Project Hobson and some lessons learnt.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

Last September, when I was asked to prepare this paper, I was told the subject was "mining," a broad subject indeed! Rather than choose one of the many important technical and economic details which characterize mining today, I turned to a subject which fas- cinates me: mining's image. If we are to survive and prosper into the twenty-first century, and if industry and society are to continue enjoying the material benefits which flow from mining, we must address the melancholy fact that the general public at best does not understand mining, and at worst does not believe it is needed or deserves to continue. While my point of view is largely that of an American mining executive, I would hasten to point out that Homestake has participated in Australian mining for over three decades, and our subsidiary, Homestake Gold of Australia Limited, is now a major producer in this "lucky country." Does society need a viable minerals and metals industry? The answer is obviously "yes," so the challenge is to change some minds: not just those of the amorphous "public," but on a focussed basis targeting journalists, educators, TV commentators, politicians and opinion makers of all stripes (I thought of using "rifle shot" instead of focussed but thought that might be misconstrued). Along the way we miners must also look deeply into ourselves, our attitudes towards the society in which we function, and our willing- ness to change as well as to seek change in others. How did we become such bad guys? More than a century ago mining was not just accepted, it was even romanticised. In America, we had altered the time-honored concept of "Crown" lands into public lands made easily available to settlers pushing back the frontier. Miners even preceded the farmers and stockmen in what was perceived as nation-building, although by the 1890s there was a growing interest in conservation, especially the protection and management of forests and national parks. Even though emphasis was shifting toward government stewardship and away from trans- fer of public lands to private ownership, homesteading and mining were clearly recognised as valid uses requiring not just access, but security of tenure. Indeed, conservation as it was then understood implied management of the public domain as well as its protection. Initially this was no great problem to the U.S. mining industry, but as the nation grew and competing land uses became more important, conflicts began to appear, first over water rights and later over air quality and destructive mining practices. But these were local disputes rather than national issues, and two World Wars, the Great Depression and post-war reconstruction lulled our industry into thinking that nothing had really changed. After the storm began to break in the 1960s, the mining industry found itself confronted by a growing maze of complex and costly laws and regulations. It took us longer than it should have to realise that, in facing this challenge, we seemed to have lost the understanding and support of many of our legislators and a majority of the general public. During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

Cerro Matoso (CMSA) in Colombia produces ferro-nickel from lateritic ore containing approximately three per cent nickel, using a Rotary Kiln - Electric Furnace (RKEF) process, in which the calcining of the mineral within the kiln is second in importance only to the smelting of the mineral in the Electrical Furnace. This article discusses the installation and operation of an expert system to control the kiln of CMSA. In the CMSA process, the run-of-mine ore is crushed, homogenised, dried and mixed with a small percentage of coal, before being heated up to 900¦C in a rotary kiln in the presence of natural gas mixed with air in a controlled proportion (air/gas constant ratio). The final objectives of the process are the following: ò To reduce to a minimum the iron and nickel oxides in order to convert these into metallic ions; this is a reduction process to facilitate largely the smelting in the electric furnace. Since the reduction is made with natural gas, it is much more economical than the subsequent complete reduction in the electric furnace, since electrical energy is much more expensive by unit of processed mineral. ò To heat the mineral as much as possible to facilitate the subsequent smelting. ò To eliminate totally the moisture content of the ore. An expert system with fuzzy logic was commissioned in 1994 for the control of the kiln and it has operated with good results ever since.

The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99 per cent extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. The method is explained in the text. Monitoring of the goaf gases as an early indication of spontaneous combustion has been incorporated in the mining cycle by placement of tubes in the goaf as the face retreats and continuous analysis of the goaf gases made at the surface by the National Coal Board tube bundle monitoring system.

There are continuing developments in underground narrow vein mining, from innovative mining methods using low-profile equipment to adaptations of current mining methods using equipment such as road-headers. The development of new mining methods and mining equipment has one purpose in mind û to extract narrow reef orebodies keeping dilution to a minimum, whilst maximising mining recovery. Achieving this will increase the head grade of the ore mined and reduce the tonnes delivered to the mill. Narrow vein mining in Australia has been limited to traditional hand held or mechanised drill and blast methods using existing æoff the shelfÆ equipment. Numerous trials have been undertaken using rock cutting technology and lower profile equipment, but these mining trials have not resulted in the full implementation of any new mining method or the adoption of low profile equipment in narrow vein mines as an accepted mining methodology. Mine operators in Canada and South Africa have teamed up with a number of equipment manufacturers and have taken steps to further mechanise and automate the mining of narrow vein orebodies, in particular to increase safety and productivity. The challenge to Australian narrow vein mining projects is to capitalise on work undertaken by overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers and to investigate the adaptation of low profile coal mining machinery to specialised metalliferous mining. With the inevitable fall in metal prices, it is necessary for Australian mine owners and mining contractors to apply these specialised methods and equipment to make narrow vein mining profitable.

THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. Laboratory-based dynamic testing provides an invaluable tool in the development of rock bolts for use in highly stressed, burst prone rock masses. While in most cases the laboratory-based test method is not a direct comparison to an in-situ installation due to the purely axial loading and variations in boundary conditions, it does provide an indication of the performance of the tendon system under dynamic loading. The aim of the research described in this paper is to provide an understanding of the effect of the impact velocity of the impact mass during a laboratory-based dynamic test. Understanding the effect of boundary conditions of laboratory testing will improve Geotechnical Engineers understanding of the performance in an in-situ installation. In addition, due to the limited number of dynamic test facilities, an understanding of the effects of the boundary conditions will aid in the comparison of test results for different products from different test facilities. The research was conducted using an impact tester, whereby a known mass is raised to a known height defining the kinetic energy and velocity of the mass at the point of impact with the test sample after release. The impact velocity was varied between 2.7 m/s and 5.4 m/s, while the kinetic energy of the mass was maintained at 11.5 kJ. While a correlation between the impact velocity and strain rate of the system tested was established, due to the properties of the system tested, the range of impact velocity on which dynamic tests were conducted was insufficient to result in a considerable change in the average impact load, the cumulative proximal displacement and the cumulative maximum energy absorbed over multiple impulse. However, due to the reduction in the momentum of the impact mass the impact duration and displacement during each impulse in the series of impulses reduced. Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning.
