DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

For some time fine coal (-0.5 mm) flot ation has been considered as a bulk flotation problem. Combinations of hydrocarbon oils and frothers have been used as surface active agents in coal flotation. The selectivity of the flotation process has always been poor in such cases. With the increase in fine coal production due to mining methods and coal handling systems, optimisation of fine coal treatment.has become important. Petrographic and mineralogical composit- ions of coal particles have been reported to influence their flotability. The problem becomes more complex due to surface oxidation of coal and the presence of slime forming clay minerals in the run of mine coal. In this paper, the flotation problem is examined on the basis of various constituents of coal and their associated gangue minerals. The selection of reagents has been suggested on the basis of their surface chemical properties. Factors such as surface modific- ation of coal and gangue materials, flotation kinetics and hydrocarbon oil - coal inter- action have been critically evaluated to improve fine coal flotation recovery.

In 1972, metallurgical testwork on Renison ore indicated a significant proportion of low specific gravity, tin-barren material ideally suited to heavy medium separation (HMS). Further technical and financial studies provided adequate economic justification and in December 1974 the Renison HMS plant was cannissioned. Initial operations were interrupted by the imposition of tin production quotas for three months in 1976; they were also beset with difficulties particularly with regard to mechanical wear. During the first two operating years much develognent work was carried out including installation of a pyrrhotite flotation bank in the medium recovery circuit, investigations into various wear-resistant materials and the use of atanised rather than milled ferro-silicon. By 1977/78 financial year satisfactory performance had been achieved and since then the average floats rejection has been 18.8% of the total ore treated with an associated tin loss of 2.96%. Developnent has nevertheless continued during the last three years, principal modifications being the installation of larger aperture desliming screens and improvements to the overdense cyclone circuit.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Renison Mine was developed as the first all diesel mine in Australia. The foresight of the early planners in committing the Mine to Decline access has paid dividends in the past two decades with Renison Mine establishing itself as one of the most productive underground mines in the world. The excellent productivity has also resulted from the development of mining equipment technology, both on the part of the equipment suppliers and through the coordination of the Mining, Automotive and Technical Design Sections at Renison Mine. Constant improvements in truck and loader design, the design of specific equipment to carry out specialized tasks such as installation of services, scaling and ground support and the conversion to electrically powered equipment have been ongoing at Renison. Currently, larger scale trucks are being investigated for ore and waste haulage due to increased haulage distances and production requirements. It appears as though an articulated low profile truck of around 50 tonnes capacity may provide the short term solution based on the performance data available.

In 1990, Alcoa of Australia Limited was elected to the Global 500 Roll of Honour of the United Nations Environment Program for the environmental management and rehabilitation of the bauxite mines in Western Australia. This award placed Alcoa in the international best practice category. The story of constant improvement spans more than 20 years from a 'trial and error' start to a strategically focussed and research driven program today. The main driving force has come from within the company, against a set of strong corporate values and a well publicised Vision based on 'excellence through quality'. Along the way public opinion, action group protests, increased legislative controls together with the professional competence of internal and external environmental resources have all played a part in arriving at the level of current environmental management and mine rehabilitation performance. There were numerous lessons learned here during the evolution and maintenance of best practice. These included: I . To work diligently in obtaining a vision or strategic intent on mine site rehabilitation and environmental management - don't be easily dissuaded.

In the past ten years or so there has been a renewed interest worldwide in the processing of refractory gold ores. The Archean province of Western Australia contains both numerous and major gold deposits, and has a long history in the development and practise of treating refractory ores (eg Blaskett and Woodcock, 1953). Depletion of shallow oxidised ores in recent years has re-focused attention on deeper sulphidic ores, and as a consequence has renewed interest in treatment methods for those ores which are refractory. Mineralogical factors he at the heart of reasons as to why these ores are refractory, and are the key to designing and improving treatment options in the longer term. This paper presents an overview of mineralogical factors that are relevant to the processing of refractory gold ores in the Archean of Western Australia. It is based on a number of research projects and other work on a variety of gold deposits, mainly in the Eastern Goldfields region, carried out over the past five years or so.

Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

Collecting the clay fraction of active stream sediment from a flowing stream for geochemical analysis i a difficult process. One either takes a sample of dry fine-grained sediment from the stream bank (dry weather and dry sample are uncommon in parts of New Zealand and Tasmania), or dredges up a sample of sand and mud out of the stream.The latter method produces a soggy ample bag full of mud and sand, with varying amounts of gravel, depending on the size of the stream. The water can be filtered from such a sample by means of a Buchner filter funnel, but is difficult to obtain a vacuum in the bush. This problem can be solved by using a small hand- queeze bellows such as used in priming petrol pumps on outboard petrol motors. The common laboratory hand bellows is not powerful enough.A 70 mm diameter two-piece polythene Buchner filter funnel (Fig. 1) can be used. A length of rubber tubing is fitted around the inlet valve of the hand bellows and this valve is then jammed into the pipe at the bottom of the filter funnel (the polythene pipe may be trimmed with a knife to fit over the inlet valve of the bellows). The vacuum is generated and maintained by squeezing the hand bellows.The technique of collecting a sample of the clay fraction is to dredge a sample of the fine-grained active stream sediment out of the stream with a container, such as a plastic mug. The sample is agitated to get the clay fraction into suspension and the muddy suspension is then decanted into the Buchner funnel. The desired clay fraction is obtained as a thin film on the filter paper.If the "fines" are also required, a filter of nylon bolting cloth (stretched across the mouth of a short length of 80 mm diameter polythene pipe and attached by rubber bands or a concentric polythene pipe) can be placed over the mouth of the Buchner funnel and the whole sample of stream sediment...

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation. Recent exploration drilling north of the Enterprise mine 3000 orebody, utilising geomechanical modelling as part of the targeting criteria, intersected copper mineralisation, providing further validation of the modelling results.CITATION:McLellan, J G, O’Sullivan, R, Miller, B and Taylor, D, 2014. Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

Whilst employed by Dyno Nobel as the Technical Services Engineer û Brisbane, I was asked, as part of a contractual agreement, to look at optimising PioneerÆs blasting process to provide the most effective rock to the new crushing and screening plant. This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

Over the past five years in coalmine slope evaluation the application of 3D modelling has increased significantly as software has become more user friendly but also areas requiring evaluation have become increasingly complex. Often simplistic 2D Limit Equilibrium modelling and analysis has been poorly used to solve slope stability issues by back analysis and subsequent forward predictive analysis. A plane strain condition with slope movement perpendicular to the slope strike is assumed where in reality the problem is more complex. This often leads to a misinterpretation of the failure mechanism because the failure mechanism being modelled in 2D does not generally represent the actual failure mechanism observed in the pit, with 2D modelling often oversimplifying a slope. This paper presents a case study where the initial slope assessment and remedial design evaluation was undertaken as a 2D Limit Equilibrium model which led to an overly conservative and costly remedial solution being implemented. Subsequent modelling of the slope using both 3D Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element methods were able to provide a better understanding of the structural complexities associated and correlate well with slope monitoring data to create a more realistic outcome.

TowerMill - Advantages in Wet Grinding Applications The TowerMill, which has now been in existence for no less than 50 years, is one alternative to the horizontal ball mill and offers several advantages. The TowerMill is widely used in (coal-fired) electric power plants for the grinding of raw material for the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurisation) process involving very high throughputs, very fine product sizes and high availability. Some companies in the mining industry also looked at the use of such optimised grinding machines several years ago and found that many of the advantages offered in other industries are transferable to new applications. Much development work has been undertaken to improve the TowerMill for new applications and, as part of that work, tests have also been conducted to make direct comparisons of their performance with that of ball mills. Grinding tests were performed using the same raw materials and comparable machine sizes. Some of the results are discussed in this paper, along with a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion provides an outlook for some worthwhile future applications. The test results, which are described and analysed, show that the TowerMill offers significant advantages in relation to operating costs and operational safety. An example based on the wet grinding of limestone is presented.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.
