More and more, today’s mining geologists are asked to identify and create 3D value domains for multidisciplinary usage: grade definition, geometallurgical performance and geotechnical characteristics, to name a few. Often, that domain shape is the result of an assumed or conjectured value as a surrogate to a set of conditions (eg kaolinite-rich, sericite alteration). Would it not be instead better to create the respective domain through identification of a consistent quantifiable geologically-based pattern as its basis?Critical to the identification of patterns is the transformation of 3D point data into a model by a method that uses few, if any, preselected thresholds. Too often we complicate the reviews of the modelled data by prejudging the value range of interest. And when we do revert to 2D views (ie sections and plans), we tend to only examine numbers or line traces. These hinder and obscure identification of geological patterns particularly in deposits of complex geology. Instead, these data should be looked at with minimal prejudgment and interrogated in 2D space by one of the best and most eye-catching display types: filled contour plots.Here we present two different processes that transform data with minimal preselection into formats that allow for pattern recognition by filled contour plots. These are: probability assisted constrained kriging (PACK) and multiple interval interpolant formation (Aranz Geo’s Leapfrog® software). The former creates a 3D model of probabilities on a threshold value; the latter creates numerous (=10), regularly-binned 3D interval interpolants. The results of each method are examined as filled contours over numerous sections or plans. Any distinct patterns are quickly discerned thereby readily identifying the best value to base the creation of a domain. These processes therefore provide a way to marry recent advances in software tools with what is supposed a geologist’s core skill: pattern recognition.CITATION:Juras, S, McKinley, S and Uludag, E, 2017. The mineralogy of new certified-reference-materials (CRM) for X-ray fluorescence from Western Australia (ASCRM 030 to 035) was analysed by X-ray diffraction using the BRUKER energy dispersive one-dimensional detector LYNXEYE-XE. The samples were studied using standard-less quantitative phase analysis, based on the Rietveld method. This method delivers the relative amount of crystalline phases. All materials were found to be high-grade iron ore predominantly consisting of hematite and goethite and very low amounts of magnetite. In addition, the gangue mineralogy was characterised. It consists of low-per cent amounts of carbonate (siderite/calcite), quartz, kaolinite, chlorite and gibbsite.Furthermore, all samples were analysed with the external standard method. This is an elegant way to probe for amorphous content without adding an internal standard. All six samples were found to contain up to 16 per cent amorphous or nano-crystalline material.CITATION:Knorr, K and Birch, S, 2013.  The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

Conventional polygonal and block modelling techniques inadequately represent the grade-thickness distribution of some narrow shear and stratabound gold deposits. The polygonal influence of high-grade drill intercepts can result in overestimates of resource tonnages at high-grade cut-offs. Although block modelling methods provide grade smoothing and a better representation of structural continuity, the technique can lack precise definition of ore width. An alternative method known as Spatial Object Modelling (SOM) has been developed on MineMap software to overcome some of these modelling issues. This method does not rely on a uniform cell size and allows grade smoothing between resource intercepts in three-dimensional space. The SOM technique creates grade-thickness bars on regular, user-defined spacings which allow easy visual comparison of raw intercept data to the interpolated model. Model cell values are readily transformed into isopachs, isopleths and resource perimeters for reporting and mine planning purposes.

The Mae Moh coal deposit was discovered some 60 years ago by villagers who noticed spontaneous combustion of coal outcrops. The first production began in the 1950's to fuel a fertilizer plant and a 12.5MW power station. During the period 1976 to 1979, three 75MW power station units were constructed on site. These have a total daily coal consumption of some 5000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of approximately 60 000 tonnes total capacity. Stacked coal is reclaimed by means of a front end loader onto reclaim conveyors. During the years 1983 to 1986 four 150MW power station units were constructed east of the eastern seam subcrop, sons 2 km from the original power station complex. These have a daily coal consumption of nearly 12000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of total capacity 270000 tonnes, equipped with two stackers and two bucket-wheel reclaimers for a totally mechanised system.

Appropriate management of the ground subsidence induced by coal mining activities is essential. To assess the effectiveness of grout injection for mining subsidence control, time-lapse ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging data were collected before and after grouting. The pregouting subsurface responses were interpreted to have changed after grout injection. The changes were caused by injecting the grout materials (flyash and water) into the delaminated strata and permeable fracture zones. The largest distance of the observed GPR event changes at the right end of the main profile is 132 m away from the injection borehole. Although the GPR images could not easily tell if the image changes were caused by the injected ashes or the water, it does suggest that the injection materials had been pushed at least 130 m away from the injection borehole. This is consistent with the borehole scan monitoring, which confirmed that the grout has travelled more than 90 m from the injection borehole.

The question of effective energy utilisation in grinding mills is not new. There are several conflicting arguments about tumbling mills, whether the efficiency is around 1 per cent or maybe 10 per cent, or even much lower. The energy not used is assumed to be lost as heating of the pulp, the grinding mill body, the charge, generation of shock waves and vibrations, etc. Stirred media mills on the other hand are generally considered to have better energy utilisation, but their energy efficiency is still not that clear. To shed some light on this a pilot-scale, wet stirred media mill was investigated over a range of operating conditions. The wet stirred media mill is a Drais PMH 5 TEX pearl mill fitted with an electric motor at 11 kW. It has been investigated over a range of operating conditions to try to balance the dissemination of the input energy in forms of the net grinding energy, mechanical energy losses, and the heating transferred to the pulp, the mill, the charge, and the cooling water. It is found that approximately 20–40 per cent of the input energy accounts for the grinding process. Also, that the difference between gross and net input electrical energy is mainly disseminated as heating of the pulp and cooling water. Mechanical energy losses appear to be much smaller than the heating effects. The use of a dispersant seems to mainly influence the heating effect.

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters; presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimising the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck-haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m bench through marginal analysis. The observations from these analyses disprove the previous conflicting assertions that the overall weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases monotonically with bench height. It is concluded that: (i) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open-pit mines; (ii) the reduction of haulage cost is limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (iii) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high benches.

SASOL Synthetic Fuels has recently completed the design of sampling systems for raw and blended coal feeding the gasifiers at Secunda, South Africa. The new systems will replace manual, stopped belt sampling and have been designed to achieve specific accuracy targets on a daily basis. The sampling system is unusual in the coal industry in that the fines content (-5.5 mm nominal) of the coal is very critical and is to be determined with high accuracy.The sampling system was designed to meet carefully considered target accuracies using methods of modern sampling theory. The heterogeneity of the coal streams involved with respect to the critical analytes was determined by appropriate sampling and sample analysis. The statistical characterisation of the time variation of analytes in the process streams was based on variograms derived from on-line ash gauges. From this point, the design was completed using fundamental statistical sampling theory and some simulation studies. The paper discusses the development of the sampling system design in detail as well as the plans to use the data stream to provide timely alarms when the coal quality deviates from the target specification.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.

Squeezing can occur both in hard rock and in jointed rock mass as a result of over stressing. It is related to time dependent shearing, ie shear creep and is associated with the volumetric expansion (dilation) and radial inward displacement of the tunnel surface. While planning a tunnel in hard rock under a high cover of the order of 2 km it is desirable to identify the potential squeezing ground conditions and to select appropriate excavation technique and the support measures. There are several solutions to counter balance the squeezing ground viz over excavation of tunnel profile, assessing appropriate excavation technique, provision of a ductile primary support and time for providing tunnel lining. Low drivage rates and high cost due to support failures requiring rectification arising out of poor anticipation of tunnel closures and support pressures are major problems associated with tunnelling under squeezing ground conditions. Under squeezing ground conditions, the deformation will be gradual, therefore, in order to absorb deformations yielding supports are quite useful as primary support which provide a reliable low initial support pressure and permit uniform stress relief of the surrounding rock along with preventing rock from ravelling. The paper discusses the various factors which influence the selection of appropriate excavation technique and support measures in hard rock under squeezing ground conditions.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

The detonation pressure of an explosive is a function of its density and its velocity of detonation (VOD) and relates directly to the degree and manner in which the explosive loads the surrounding rock. The suitabil- ity of an explosive to any particular situation is determined not so much by the total energy released but more by the rate at which it is released. As the science of rock blasting advances it is becoming economically more important to quantify explosive performance, particularly with respect to quality control and fragmentation. As part of a major explosive user, BHP Central Research Laboratories have developed a number of tech- niques to determine the detonation characteristics of explosives. These include a method of continuous velocity of detonation measurement based on the SLIFER principle. This not only enables the VOD of the explo- sive to be determined, but also has the versatility to allow factors such as under priming, slow run up, the effect of water, variable energy load- ing and the velocity of the shock wave in the stemming to be assessed. Multi point VOD systems have also been developed for more routine appli- cations. With a minor modification they can be used to determine the absolute delay of detonators accurately and economically. Direct deto- nation pressure measurement methods have also been developed based on piezoresistive techniques. Future developments include the incorpo- ration of all the above techniques into a single, portable package, allow- ing easy use on the mine site.

The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

An accurate measure of the earth's magnetic field can be made in a few seconds with the portable proton precession magnetometer. Such an instrument increases the applicability of the long successful method of magnetic prospecting for minerals. As an example of the usefulness of the proton magnetometer, a survey over volcanic rocks near Apsley (Tas.) was made.INTRODUCTIONA completely portable magnetometer whose operation is based on the free precession of polarized protons in the earth's magnetic field, is now available on the market at a price competitive with magnetometers based on the classical physical principles. The ease, accuracy, rapidity, and reliability with which measurements of the earth's total magnetic field can be made with the proton precession magnetometer, led to the try-out of the instrument in an actual field problem so as to evaluate fully the capabilities of the instrument. Such evaluation is important, because the history of magnetic prospecting has shown that whenever significantly improved instrumentation has been introduced, prospecting costs have been substantially cut and many areas in which the prospecting costs were formerly considered excessive in relation to probable returns, have become economic mineral prospects. Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.

This paper describes the design, construction and performance of sill pillars using cemented development mullock at the Crusader Gold Mine. The orebody is some 35 m - 60 m in length, 5 m - 8 m wide, dipping at 60¦ - 85¦ and plunging at about 40¦ to the north. It is accessed via a footwall decline. The ore occurs at the contact between basalt and ultramafic. This contact is characterised by shearing and alteration; and is prone to unraveling failure. The cut and fill mining method at Crusader extracts 25 m high ore blocks in four flat back lifts and one 8 m thick crown pillar. To enable full recovery of these high-grade crown pillars with minimal dilution, a 5 m thick sill pillar is constructed using cemented rock fill (CRF), after mining of the bottom two lifts in each block. Uncemented development mullock is used as rock fill (RF) for subsequent lifts. Development mullock and cement/water slurry is mixed underground to produce CRF. The fill is transported to the stope in LHDs and dumped on the floor. The sill pillar is advanced progressively, with compaction provided by the loader driving over the previously placed fill. Old jumbo rods are installed as shear pins along the flat dipping hangingwall to reduce the risk of rotational failure of the pillar. A fan of cable bolts is installed into the hangingwall to prevent unraveling failure in the sheared ground. Buffer blasting is used to minimise damage to the CRF sill pillar when the crown pillar below is extracted. At the time of writing, extraction of the crown pillar underneath the CRF has taken place at the 930 stope. The crown pillar was extracted successfully with dilution from the backfill and hangingwall minimised and 98 per cent of the gold recovered. This compares with pillars that were mined beneath uncemented backfill where only 70 per cent of the gold was recovered and where there was significant dilution from the backfill and from hangingwall failures. Where no CRF was placed, there were also numerous production delays caused by large rocks from the hangingwall blocking the stope brow.

The lead concentration of flotation feed ore slurries is determined using two ?-ray absorption gauges mounted directly on a 6 in. diameter flotation feed pipeline. One gauge is a conventional "density" gauge using CS137. The other is a "lead-sensitive" gauge, which depends on the preferential absorption. by lead of 225 key y-rays resulting from Compton backscatter of CS137 y-rays.Gauge outputs are combined using an analogue computer the output signal of which is directly proportional to the lead concentration of the pulp. The accuracy of measurement of the pulp lead concentration is ± 3·6 per cent for ore slurries with lead concentrations in the range 0'07-0·16 g/c.c. and pulp densities 1.43-1.60 g/c.c.This paper sets out the development of the technique and details are given of the two experiments (1964, 1966) conducted in the plant at North Broken Hill Limited. The installation of the two-gauge system inthe plant during May 1968 is described. Details are given of the calibration technique used and the results obtained.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. Some fall of material was anticipated; however, quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) during grouting, staged stope extraction and careful blast design minimised fall of material.CITATION:Proudman, A, Isles, J, Lawolo, R and Forster, G, 2017.
