"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. The slight differences are most likely due to the different search strategies, but also indicate the robustness of the unconstrained modelling approach.CITATION:Queen, L D and Tear, S J, 2015. Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

Segmental tunnel linings are becoming more common in Australia. One current project employing a segmental lining is the City West Cable Tunnel (CWCT) in Sydney. The project has been commissioned by Energy Australia and is currently being constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. The project includes 1.6 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven, segmentally lined tunnel. The majority of the CWCT will be excavated through Hawkesbury Sandstone. The tunnel is required to carry a 132 kV electrical circuit under SydneyÆs central business district (CBD), between Haymarket and Energy AustraliaÆs City North Substation on Sussex Street. The segmental lining has been designed as a 3.2 m internal diameter, 200 mm thick universal ring with six trapezoidal segments. The design and detailing of this segmental lining presents some noteworthy challenges, including exposure to saline groundwater, and the exclusive use of steel fibres for flexural and tensile concrete reinforcement. This paper describes some of the key elements of the segmental lining design. These include:the case for choosing segmental linings over other forms of tunnel construction;the major design checks required of a segmental lining including ground loading, hydrostatic loading, joint bearing, joint rotation, ram loading and the early strength lifting case;the benefits of using steel fibres over conventional steel reinforcement;the design approach used for steel fibre reinforced concrete;the application of 3D computer modelling in the design;the provision for components including connector dowels and gaskets;the design for passive fire resistance; andthe design for durability of steel fibre reinforced concrete in a saline environment. Segmental lining design requires the application of specialist design approaches. Input is required by the construction team, as the methods of demoulding, handling, transportation and installation impact on the lining design. As the segmental lining is functioning as immediate ground support and also a permanent lining, high standards of manufacture and construction quality control are required to ensure that the 100-year design life is met. The requirement for a watertight tunnel means that detailing and installation of the EPDM gaskets is of importance.

Proposals designed to use stockpiles and buffer stocks to achieve price stabilization and better resource use have a long history. They are super- ficially simple to understand. The benefits seem clear. And yet I am well aware that this is not a simple subject: the more one studies it, the more complex it becomes. Worldwide interest in re- source management, while receiving fresh impetus from the OPEC actions, also has a long and chequered history. Those venturing into such ter- ritories must be forewarned of the traps and pit- falls which abound. Interest in these schemes has waxed and waned over the years with the fluctuating fortunes of the producers or consumers. As I write this paper towards the end of 1977, I am acutely aware of the low ruling prices for zinc, copper, and nickel. These sacrifice prices remind me that it is difficult, for example, for a surveyor, to be calm and rational if he is up to his neck in a swamp full of crocodiles. He might be forgiven for forgetting that the aim was to drain the swamp! I am also aware that when swamps are drained, painful and dangerous stumps sometimes stick out. Hence, in looking at the subject of stockpiles and resource management we must not set our sights too high, perhaps not initially hope for perfec- tion, if we want to secure worthwhile changes. My approach is to acknowledge a bias for the market system. We have, however, had experience (remember the 1930s) of some weaknesses in the untrammelled operation of free markets. Thus our international economic relationships over the past 20 or 30 years have been based on a desire to retain as much as possible of a liberal world trading system backed by such organizations as the GATT, IMF, and the U.N. to ensure the necessary cooperation. Some nations have seen this system work only partially in their best in- terests. GATT, for example, has been reasonably effective in liberalizing trade in many manufac- tured goods but far less so in regard to agricultural or semi-processed goods.

This presentation discusses a water filtration technology termed Fabric Media that is somewhat novel to the Australian market place and reports several recent mining industry installations. Like many novel household cleaning products, the Fabric Media technology applies the science of active washable micro fibres as the means of capturing contaminant solid particles. The simple Fabric Media water filtration product offers several attractive attributes when compared to the more traditional media bed filtration processes such as sand filters, and barrier filters such as micro membranes. A micro fibre based filtration media enables both superior adsorption for the contaminant and wash ability. Stronger adsorption capture enables a much higher flux and greater solids loading density for the filtration task, meaning that lower cost and smaller footprint equipment is available. For Fabric Media water filters, a textile weave is selected that minimises the flow backpressure for a given particle size separation. Thus for an equivalent filtration performance this provides a much lower operating energy requirement, generally between 50 and 80 per cent less than for a sand filter. A Fabric Media is not abrasive to itself or to the filter tank. The filtration performance remains constant and predictable. The equipment life is much longer and the asset value of the new filtration equipment should maintain throughout the project life. Fibres are extremely mechanically robust and chemically inert. Fabric Media survives repetitive exposure to a rapid mechanical washing event providing high wash efficiency with minimum equipment off-line time for the backwash. Dislodging captured contaminants by a high-speed mechanical agitation enables a minimum off-line time during backwash events. The vigorous backwash destroys adhering flocculant and eliminates the formation of mud balls, which can permanently foul sand filters. The mechanical agitation wash of the Fabric Media water filter ensures complete removal of grease and biofilm, which can adhere and block a membrane surface. In comparison to sand filters and micro filtration membranes, the Fabric Media product is applicable to a significantly wider range of solids concentrations without permanent damage. The technology is very forgiving to excursion in plant control and is therefore considered a very operator-friendly concept.

Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.

This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

The purpose of this paper is to list by tabulation and flow sheet, the operating equipment and installations in use at Rosebery, and to refer to particular items which may be of interest for purposes of comparison, or because they possess some unusual feature. The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

New and more cost-effective methods of haulage and hoisting will be needed to develop the underground mines of the future. A review of the development of technology since the 1950s shows that once mechanised equipment became available it took 25 years for appropriate mining methods to be developed and the equipment made reliable, then a further 25 years to reach todayÆs level of automation and reliability. Suggestions are made about possible areas for ongoing research with the observation that there is little research worldwide into disruptive technologies. A call is made for better organisation and presentation of the opportunities and potential benefits of new underground mining technologies.

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.

Until the early 1960s the world aluminium industry was dominated by six principle pro- ducers with integrated activities from bauxite mining to aluminium production. The growth in consumption of aluminium since that time and the emergence of additional producers has broadened the market for bauxite. In addition the increase in the optimum size of alumina refin- eries has influenced competing metal producers to unite in large joint ventures to minimize alumina costs. From these bases the paper examines present and likely future markets for Australian bauxite; differing marketing phil- osophies for serving those markets; factors influencing successful marketing; and the sources and relative strength of competition which Australia faces.

The reasons for using SFRS, including the way a SFRS performs in comparison to plain shotcrete as a support element in mining tunnels, are discussed. The mechanisms by which steel fibres reinforce shotcrete and the need for specifying performance criteria are highlighted. A description of current testing procedures, including an overview of æquantitativeÆ design recommendations provided from various international authorities, is provided. A summary of international recommendations on suitable æqualitativeÆ performance classifications is also reviewed, including a critique of their suitability. Finally recommendations on the practical considerations necessary to ensure good quality, in-place SFRS, are made, including a calculation method for determining minimum steel fibre dosages.

This paper gives an overall view of the CSIRO-SGTE computer system for thermodynamic calculations. The basis of the system is the coupling of a large self-consistent numeric data bank of thermodynamic information to a modular set of application programs. These seven programs cover management of data files, calculation of thermodynamic properties for species and reactions, plotting of predomin- ance area diagrams, equilibrium and enthalpy balances for complex processes, analysis of thermodynamic efficiency and the estimation of unknown properties. The data bank contains a wide coverage of species and data types so that the system may be applied to many areas of chemistry and metallurgy.

A regional scale prospectivity model was developed for Papua New Guinea (PNG) to identify areas of porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Weights of evidence modeling techniques were used to determine spatial correlations between porphyry Cu-Au mines and predictive maps created from available spatial data. These predictive maps were then combined into a final prospectivity map. Despite limited regional scale data the model has successfully identified areas of known porphyry mineralisation as prospective and has also identified areas where new mineralised systems may be discovered with further exploration. A simulation of the fluid flow, minera- logical and chemical aspects of in situ leaching is being developed for application to the recovery of metals from unbroken, naturally jointed rock. The fluid flow aspect has been developed. The rock is assumed to have a double-fracture property. A major joint set is responsible for bulk flow of solution, while a minor joint set, intersecting with the major set, allows the solution to contact the reactive minerals. The two-dimensional fluid flow through the major joint set is analysed by a streamline model for a particular well pattern. The other important components of the model are described briefly.

The compact BWE system set up in 1984 to mine ironsand dunes and the underlying ironsand-clay has been an effective high volume produc- tion unit for New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd at the Waikato North Head ironsand mine. The system utilising two compact S400E (0 & K) Bucket Wheel Exca- vators and a single shared Beltwagon for transfer to the shiftable bench conveyors replaced a fleet of mobile elevating scrapers when the produc- tion requirement was increased by a factor of six. A key factor in favour of the BWE system was the economic advan- tages of low unit costs for both manpower and electrical energy.

This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.
