Activity-composition-temperature relations for both gold and nickel have been determined for the solid and liquid states of the gold-nickel system by the application of the Margules equations. These relations are in satisfactory agreement with activity measurements of nickel in the solid state, the observed phase boundaries of the system between 700 and 1725°K, as well as being consistent with data on the enthalpy of mixing.

The extraction of platinum and rhodium from scrapped honeycomb autocatalyst into hydrochloric acid/aluminum chloride/nitric acid solutions is described. Results are given for the effects of leachant composition, temperature and catalyst pre-reduction using hydrogen. Data are also presented for the recovery, by hydrogen reduction, of platinum and rhodium dissolved in the leach solution. Parameters studied include solution composition and temperature, hydrogen pressure, and platinum seed addition.

Reliable face support pressure is necessary for shield driven tunnels in cohesionless soils to prevent excessive ground movements. This paper presents experimental work on stability of a tunnel face using transparent soil models aiming to obtain magnitude of tunnel face minimum supporting pressure, failure pattern and extension of failed zone. A model tunnel was preinstalled in transparent soil which was supported at the face by means of water pressure. Tests were performed by reducing supporting pressure until collapse occurred. Model tests were sliced optically with laser sheet and images were captured for every decrement in tunnel supporting pressure. Later, these images were analysed by digital image correlation (DIC) and vector fi elds of incremental displacements were obtained. Values of minimum support pressures were given for different cover/diameter (C/D) ratios. Geometry of the failure zones depicted for different (C/D) values and appeared to be of chimney shape with a limited extension front of the face. A minimum support pressure was achieved with support pressures as low as 10 ± 1 per cent of the effective vertical stress at the tunnel axis. The stability of the tunnel face was related to the coefficient of active earth pressure with C/D ratio having a small effect on the magnitude of required pressure at collapse. In general, results of the study were in agreement with current knowledge of full-scale situations.

Several methods are available for inspections of mine shafts. These involve use of inclinometers, moving beams, inertial platforms and decelerometers. Inspections which use decelerometers are of most interest since they allow assessment of conditions of shaft steelwork, conveyances and the shaft itself. This assessment is based on recording and analysing dynamic behaviour of shaft conveyances. Sample inspections of several WA shafts confirm feasibility of using this method for periodic shaft Inspections.

The paper describes the development and analysis of an instability database to establish a new method of slope stability assessment for U.K. surface coal mines. The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

Mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic data have been obtained for samples from 11 volcanoes and 4 kortlandite intrusives on Kamchatka.Similarities and differences in ore-bearing and barren intrusives are discussed. Differences in sulphide mineralization and sulphur isotope compositions of intrusives are explained in terms of the "auto-sulphurization" hypothesis which involves the redox conditions of the host rocks. possible role for carbon in nickle sulphide ore formation is also considered.

Widely diverse mechanisms exist for the action of a range of selective sulphide flotation depressants. Collector desorp- tion, leaching, competitive adsorption, formation of hydrophilic reaction-product coatings, action as reducing agents, and action as lattice-oxidizing agents are discussed. Detailed attention is focused on the latter two mechanisms. Recent works on copper depressants particularly for copper-molybdenum separations, and oxidizing agents enabling arsenopyrite- pyrite separations, are presented and discussed.

Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. Joint mapping is a fundamental input for rock mass characterisation and slope stability analysis. The usual way to do it is using a compass in the field or digitising structures on a screen, with a software package.In this paper a method to identify and map joints automatically along a rock face is presented; it is called the Concentric Shells (CS) algorithm. The method scans a point cloud sequentially, tests if selected points are ‘true pivots’ within an inner shell, and then it searches for points inside a wider sphere (outer shell).The algorithm, developed by the author, was applied in real data. It reproduces the main features obtained from conventional (compass) and digital mapping (software package). Execution times are approximately 45 seconds for two point sets holding of 3.1 million points. Obtaining the same results via digital mapping takes approximately 3–4 working days.Key advantages of this method are: significant time reductions; elimination of mapping bias; and the ability to manage very large data sets (>2 million points) without the need of scanning the cloud on the screen. The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages public conservation land throughout New Zealand in terms of section 6 of the Conservation Act 1987. In brief, this requires DOC to manage the natural and historic resources of the land; promote the benefits of conservation to present and future generations; provide information about conservation; to foster recreation on the land; and allow for its use for tourism.   Locally the department's Tauranga Area Office manages approximately 60 000 hectares of Conservation Park (known as the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park) which includes early gold mining relics and former bush tramways associated with the logging and the mining industries. The Department has recently developed the Kaimai Heritage Plan which seeks to restore some of the relics and encourage involvement by the local communities in the restoration and interpretation of their history in the hills. It provides a unique opportunity for the Department to help bring alive for New Zealanders an important, and often overlooked, part of our history as a nation in a stunning natural setting.   The purpose of this presentation is to: +        display the endeavour and ingenuity of the early miners and loggers, the relics of those industries and the dramatic environment in which they worked; +        identify the linkages between those early industries and gold mining today; and +        promote a co-operative approach to heritage and recreation management involving all facets of the community.

In contrast with mining in areas close to the main centres, mining in remote areas is characterised by comparatively high initial investment and relatively high running cost for the life of the mine. This is because of:the real cost of establishing and running the operation at a location distant from the necessary infrastructure; and the perceived risks priced into their costs by the multitude of suppliers involved in the project. Optimal co-operation between the mine and the supplier in developing the right rela tionship and the correct technical solution permit both cost elements to be reduced. This re duction may well mean the difference between success and failure. This paper examines the possibilities for optimising the contribution of the equipment supplier to the overall success of the process. Issues covered include the necessity to provide more than merely equipment fit for the purpose , but also the need to maximise the benefits of equipment ownership over the life of the mine. A simple method of determining the optimum timing for equipment replacement or rebuilding is proposed . Furthermore the maintenance contract (or performance agreement) is suggested as a means of leveraging the supplierÆs commitment to the mining operation. The specific examples are based on experience with mobile equipment but the methodology has relevance to other equipment and supplies.

The subject of government involvement in industry is, to say the least, a touchy one. For many it conjures up thoughts of socialisation or nationalisation. For others it is a desirable objective and is seen as a means of social reform by giving government a greater say in the control and distribution of human, financial and natural resources for the betterment of the community. Whatever your point of view, it is difficult to deny that government involvement exists to lesser or greater degrees in all industries. The mining industry is no exception and the degree of government involvement is probably greater than it is in other industries. I think it is important to remember when talking about government involvement in industry to recognise that there are different types of involvement and that all governments have a right, if they so desire, to become involved in whatever way they choose. The decision of a government to increase its direct or indirect involvement must, of course, be taken in the national interest. Governments, if we are still old fashioned enough to believe in ministerial and electoral responsibility, must make up their own minds about whether their actions are in the national interest and they must be prepared to accept the consequences of that action, good or bad. Dartbrook (Hunter Valley and South Bulli (Southern Coalfield) Collieries provide contrasting settings for gas sorption studies. Gas compositions at Dartbrook are dominated by carbon dioxide, with minor methane, while those at South Bulli are dominated by methane with minor carbon dioxide. Total gas contents at Dartbrook are also significantly greater than those at South Bulli. The two collieries are also contrasted in terms of coal composition and mining environment. Dartbrook Colliery mines a relatively small sectionb(4m) of very thick seam (up to mapproximately25m); the coal is vitrinite-rich, high volatile bituminous. South Bulli mines most of the seam thickness, with coal being an intertinite-rich, medium volatile bituminous coal.Coal samples have been collected from in-seam gas drainage holes for evaluation of relative gas desorption rate (methane versus carbon dioxide). Following adsorption isotherms, petrography, chemistry (proximate and ultimate analysis) and pore structure analysis (carbon dioxide surface area, mercury porosimetry). Bomb desorption studies indicate different behaviours for methane desorption at these two collieries desorbed gas compositions at South Bulli show a small enrichment in methane content. The opposite is observed at Dartbrook. Both collieries show enrichment in CO2 in the residual content. Adsorption studies show marked variation in adsorbed gas contents for methane and carbon dioxide at each colliery and between collieries. These variations are related to differences in coal pore structure, chemistry and Petrology.

The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.

The Queensland Department of Mines believes it is in the best interests of the gold mining industry to reduce and control the environmental impacts from gold mining since that is the community expectation.The Department of Mines has set as a special condition of many recently granted Mining Leases the requirement to submit a "Description of Operations" for the approval of the Minister, prior to commencing initial mining operations. In order to facilitate compliance by lessees with this condition an explanation is given of the reasons for this condition and how it is intended to achieve the objective of environmental protection.Environmental impact is operations dependent. Impact on a lease will vary quite significantly with the scale and methods employed. Before a lease can be granted and mined it is therefore necessary to have this information. The parameters of operations most critical both in terms of environment impact and economic viability are worked out and agreed with the lessee before the lease is granted. An approved description of operations which is required now, prior to the start of mining, provides the details of that agreement for the security and benefit of the lessee and the inspectors. It also provides the details of operations and environmental controls which were not required prior to the grant of the lease but are nevertheless required and necessary for compliance with the environmental standards.

The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. IN this paper the author's intention is to convey a brief resume of the lead flotation treatment and lead flotation machines, which have replaced the May jigs and Wilfley tables at the plant of the North Broken Hill Ltd., and converted this mill into an all-flotation plant.Attention is directed to the fact that this drastic change from semi-gravity to all-flotation treatment, has been successfully accomplished without resorting to finer grinding than that previously in vogue for Wilfley table concentration, viz.: 10% to 16% plus 40-mesh I.M.M. screen.From the figures now available it is manifest that the scheme of all-flotation concentration-new as regards its successful application to Broken Hill ores is resulting in considerably higher-grade lead concentrates, and is substantially decreasing charges for labour, stores, and maintenance.The new treatment is far-reaching in its simplification of plant, as evidenced by the idle jigs and tables, and the results being obtained by North Broken Hill Ltd. may possibly influence metallurgical practice generally in Broken Hill.The outstanding features of the treatment are:(1) The coarseness, and high grade of lead concentrates obtainable.(2) The low time factor required for flotation.(3) The plant capacity, and the simplicity of its operation.(4) The low horse-power consumption.(5) The small cost for reagents used (not exceeding 3d. per ton of ore).

A linear motor properly wound can serve as a mechanism for separating paramagnetic sulphide minerals, like pyrrhotite, from other sulphides and associated gangue minerals. The effective- ness of separation depends on the energising current of the separator, the frequency of the a.c. cycle, and the particle size of the minerals. The speed of travel of the minerals over the surface of the separator is also a function of particle size, and appears to be constant. The movement of pyrrhotite, magnetite and iron filings of comparable size fraction (150um +74pm) on the linear motor surface has been observed using a cine camera. An attempt has been made to give a theoretical basis for the movement of the particles by calculating the minimum electrical energy required to move them. Further, the rate of decay of magnetic moment of the particles has been estimated for magnetite and it has been found that sufficient residual magnetism existed in the particles after they had been exposed to the first half of an a.c. cycle for them to have like polarity with the second half of the cycle. The particles are therefore repelled from the motor surface every second half of the cycle. This repulsion due to remanent magnetism is the probable cause of particle movement over the linear meter surf, e.
