Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.

As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. The district selected for examination was that of St. Helens, on the East Coast of Tasmania, which district had behind it a long record of successful tin mining operations.PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS OF SIAMESE TIN SYNDICATE LTD. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. Particle Mechanics and the Design of Cyclone Tribochargers Triboelectric separation is a dry electrostatic technique that has shown promise in several particle processing applications. A tribocharger uses contact or friction to differentially charge particles of different materials, which are then separated by an electric field. The initial tribocharging process is poorly understood, with tribocharger design and operation largely a matter of trial and error. A better physical understanding of tribocharger operation would therefore be of immense value in the optimisation of triboelectric separation processes. A combination of charge measurements, trajectory modelling and high-speed video has been used to relate charging to particle mechanics in a cylindrical pneumatic cyclone, one of the most effective tribochargers for mineral separation applications, and the preliminary results are presented here. The consequences of these observations for cyclone tribocharger design and operation, and for tribocharger design in general, are discussed.

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. Stope control information at the C.S.A. mine is obtained by diamond drilling inclined holes from within the stapes. Practical mining outlines are determined from complicated ore contours by a joint mining engineering and geological study. Production holes to achieve this outline are individually marked up and checked. Stope control also extends to selective mucking of ore mixtures for metallurgical reasons and to marginal ore and waste mixtures for economic reasons.

Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineral sands in Australia for some thirty-five years. They were used as the primary treatment method until the advent of the Reichert cone, which largely replaced them, due to its compact design and relative ease of operation. Spirals continued-to be used as the final cleaning stage before dry separation of the heavy minerals as they remained the most efficient separator for this purpose.

This paper will outline the design process, and the constmction and rehabilitation techniques proposed for the external waste dumps associated with the mining of the Wolfang Basin coal measures.The basin is located to the north of Clermont and immediately west of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. Development of the Clermont Coal Mine is planned for the mid-1990s after adequate sales commitments are obtained to allow the project to proceed.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

The paper describes a spectrometric method and apparatus developed for lithology logging in brown coal formations. The nuclear spectromet- ric technique developed is able to delineate coal/sand/clay seams. One requirement was to log inside drilling rods, as well as cased or open holes. The method described is based on combined natural gamma and gamma- gamma techniques using a spectrometric system for signal acquisition and subsequent computer based on-line data analysis and interpretation.

A contract for three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans of the same aerodynamic design, was placed by Mount ]sa Mines Limited in 1963. The hydraulic blade pitch changing mechanism, the method of blade fabrication, and the roll out centre casings are features of these fans. Protection devices and fan control are designed for unattended operation and remote control. The erection and commissioning of the fans during 1964-65 is described.

"An accurate prediction of benefit for some types of ore may require not just the ore grade, but a whole compositional characterisation of the estimates; that is, its full mineral composition including waste composition and nuisance elements. An example is Nickel laterite ores, where Ni/Co content must be complemented by estimates of many other elements, as these might have a notable impact on ore processing.Estimates are often obtained with (co-)kriging or co-simulation; however, geostatistics applied to compositional data may yield spurious and inconsistent results because of the constant sum constraint. The log-ratio approach avoids such problems. It proposes a three-step procedure: data are mapped to a set of log ratios of components; for example, the additive log-ratio transformation (alr) transformed scores are modelled with an appropriate fully multivariate geostatistical toolbox; for example, direct/cross-semivariograms and co-kriging or co-simulation results are back-transformed to the original units.Some practical aspects may make the application of this technique difficult: the assumption of Gaussianity and the high dimensionality of the compositions combined with the need for using multivariate methods. This contribution compares several ways of treating compositional data (combining normal score transformation, log-ratio transformations, and minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor (MAF) decomposition) with respect to their ability to generate sensible simulations. The various approaches considered are illustrated with a Nickel laterite data set for which ten variables are available. Both theoretical considerations and illustration results suggest that the best combination is (log)ratio-normal score transform-MAF, in this order. The factors so obtained are closer to Gaussian, approximately spatially decorrelated and can be simulated independently. Simulations can later be recombined to alr-simulations, which in turn may be converted back to point compositions. The resulting simulated compositions are compared with a full Gaussian co-simulation of the raw data. The log-ratio methods show reasonable to good reproduction of mean values, and distribution of the data set and by construction satisfy the total sum constraint, in contrast to the simulations based on raw data for which the total sums fluctuate strongly.CITATION:Mueller, U, Tolosana-Delgado, R and van den Boogaart, K G, 2014. Previous papers at Metplant conferences have covered the options for crushing and grinding circuit selection. High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) may have considerable advantages over autogenous milling circuits but test work and evaluating different grinding circuits must be done to establish which circuit provides the best option. The Hawsons low grade magnetite project provides a specific example in using thorough test work, careful simulations and detail in design to allow the evaluation of grinding circuit performance. Fortunately tools are available for this evaluation and the test work for the Hawsons iron ore is detailed in this paper. The results of the test work and simulation indicates that although the Hawsons iron ore is competent in terms of autogenous milling given the medium hardness of the ore in the Drop Tests, the HPGR testing indicates that the use of HPGR is likely to use half the energy requirement. This is a characteristic of the Hawsons iron ore and is likely to be valid for other iron ores in the Braemer Iron Formation which stretches from the Hawsons lease in New South Wales to Razor Back and South Dam in South Australia. The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. However, the Pilbara region was discovered in this era and this led to development of high grade direct shipping grade hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (Capex) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. The magnetite grade was found to be low at around 16% Davis Tube mass recovery (DTR) but despite this, the project provides a positive business case as a result of the following key factors:• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding with a Bond Work Index of 6.3.• The mineralised rock fractures easily preferentially along grain boundaries.• The location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce in Broken Hill, 60km to the North East.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• The only contaminant in concentrate is silica.• The resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.The low Bond Work index is a key characteristic of the Hawsons iron ore and the use of autogenous milling and HPGR circuits is compared to other iron ores indicating why the plant energy requirement may be just as important as iron ore grades.

Dr Eric Bumstead is to be commended for his recent paper on gold analysis, published in the March 1984 Proceedings. It is not often that someone in industry, rather than academia, takes the time to collect and report on such a volume of data, data which is of interest to everyone involved in gold exploration and development.After reading the paper I felt, as a geochemist and as ayer, that there was another side to this whole question of analysis that few people are aware of, i.e. the problem facing a laboratory and how the laboratory can try to give the customer maximum value for money spent.Analyses for gold are carried out for different reasons, depending on the aims of the geologist or metallurgist who presents the samples. These can broadly be separated into three classes, to answer the following questions.1. "Is there any gold in this sample?"2. "Approximately how much gold is there in this sample?"3. "How much gold is there in this sample?"In every case there is a different balance between accuracy and precision, cost and avoiding chemical problems. By "chemical problems", I mean such possibilities as samples containing high levels of sulphides, gold present as tellurides, cyanide being present, contamination with mercury, and other mineralogical oddities, plus problems such as samples containing grease.There is no such thing as one assay to cover all possibilities.Samples in category I come mostly from early stages of exploration.There are often large numbers of samples, their mineralogy is not well known and hence chemical problems could exist, but the explorer wants assays at a minimum level of precision and expects minimum cost. These characteristics do not easily come together, for although the precision required is low, the accuracy required is high at low levels. A small positive result when the true answer is nil could lead to a fruitless search and a waste of money. Conversely, a nil result, when the true answer is a small but significant level of gold, could lead to the passing over of an area that may warrant further work.Because there are conflicting requirements for this type of assay, the methods chosen must be a compromise and different assayers will balance these requirements differently and come to different conclusions. The methods cover sample preparation, assay sample size and variations in assay techniques.

With the next mining boom looming, the industry will once again struggle to meet skills needed as the current generation boomers are set to retire. In order to meet these needs it is going to need to focus on what underutilised human resources - in particular women - want!   Women comprise around 14 per cent of the mining workforce, compared with a 45 per cent participation rate in the work force overall. Within the industry, women still make up only one per cent of trades people, eight per cent of operators/production employees, 12 per cent of engineers and 11 per cent of executive management.   It may be worth pointing out that mining has an age profile skewed towards the older end of the spectrum. When it comes to employee retention, what women want may be a good starting point to examine, more broadly, what all employees might want (but are too afraid to ask!).   Women in mining want the following: To be scrutinised for their work and performance, not their personal lives, appearance or relationships. True pay equity. This is addressed at lower levels between companies but at professional levels the salary differentials begin to appear and little is done to identify why this continues to be the case. Recognition and acceptance that women can have different work-styles, and that diversity of work-styles is an asset to be nurtured not a threat to be neutralised! Recognition that a more diverse workforce demographic that better reflects society at large will assist the company in its dealings with many diverse stakeholders from society at large. For employers to recognise that a career break to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than that of someone who has not taken a career break. Similarly, for employers to recognise that working part-time for to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than someone who works a more traditional roster. Access to affordable and quality child care compatible with mining rosters in mining towns. Zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, and workplace cultures that promote respect and safety. A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017.
