Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. "The Gold Technology Group at Curtin University through the AMIRA P420 series of projects has recently developed the integrated liberation leach model (ILLM) for optimisation of gold plants. The model encompasses recovery by both gravity (batch centrifugal concentrators or BCCs) and leach adsorption (CIP/CIL) circuits. The ILLM essentially combines the Group’s well-known standalone models (ie gravity and SIMCIL) to create a robust simulation package.The ILLM process model provides a tool for sites to determine optimum set points for operations to optimise recovery (eg target grind size). It can also be used to predict the effect on gravity recovery, leach recovery and overall recovery when changes are made to circuit design, either temporarily (eg a leach tank taken off-line for maintenance) or as part of a circuit expansion (eg expanded gravity circuit capacity, or addition of leach tank capacity).This paper discusses the capability of the ILLM process model by highlighting a recent case study. Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. Past experience with fully bonded cable dowels placed as a means of reinforcement in highly stressed crop pillars at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine indicated such support was not fully effective. Typically overbreak of the crown occurred leaving long lengths of cables hanging from the back stripped of grout and rock with the potential load carrying capacity of the cables not having been fully utilised. This mode of behaviour had been observed in the cable dowelled crowns of three longhole open stopes (EROS) mined to the No. 12 level at NBHC. A system of support with improved mechanism of load transfer from rock to cable and capable of full utilisation of cable strength was proposed for the crown pillars of future Stopes.

A mine waste rock dump does not have any intrinsic value, yet is an inevitable structure in surface mining operations. Since the purpose of mining is to maximise profit, possible expenditure reduction in hauling waste rock to the dump, which can represent up to 50 per cent of the total operating cost, is highly desirable. Apart from cost, potential acid mine drainage (AMD), due to seepage from surface waste rock dumps containing reactive waste rock, could threaten the ecological balance, drinking water supplies and irrigation systems downstream from a mine site. In order to minimise these potential risks, selective placement of benign and reactive waste rock, and the encapsulation of reactive waste rock by benign waste rock, need to be carried out during the construction of the rock dump.In this paper, a new methodology, based on mixed integer programming (MIP) is developed to manage waste rock dumping. The model aims to minimise waste rock haulage costs by locating the optimum destination(s) for each waste rock block, while at the same time controlling the placement of reactive waste rock to minimise the potential for AMD. Tests on small-scale virtual data demonstrated that the model is capable of dealing with selective placement of different waste rock types, encapsulating reactive, potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock, and stockpiling benign waste rock for encapsulation and rehabilitation purposes. The Waterview Connection will provide a high-quality strategic alternative to State Highway One and complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route connecting State Highways 20 and 16. The project includes twin three-lane motorway tunnels 2.4 km long and 13.1 m internal diameter (ID). The tunnel construction started in November 2013 using the tenth largest earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The tunnels will pass beneath urban and greenfield areas as well as a major local arterial road. The project is being delivered by an alliance of constructors, designers and the New Zealand Transport Agency. This paper describes some of the key innovative and cost saving design solutions that have been achieved through collaboration in the alliance environment with the construction team, owner’s verifier, the segmental lining precast suballiance and the M&E suballiance for the underground works. The key design elements of the tunnel comprise a three-lane roadway, invert culvert and backfill, precast segmental lining, sixteen mined cross passages including a low point sump cross passage and steel segments for opening to the cross passages. This paper reviews interdisciplinary design integration and the economies achieved in the permanent works tunnel lining design, including reduction in lining thickness and optimising reinforcement, cross passage separation of 150 m, efficient design of the invert culvert and backfill design, main drainage pipe and low point sump. The Homer Tunnel is located in a remote area of the South Island of New Zealand and carries large numbers of tourists to Milford Sound through an avalanche prone area. The tunnel is 1280 m long with a steep ten per cent unidirectional grade descending to the west. Construction of the tunnel began in the 1930s and was completed to a nominal 6 m width in 1954. In 1996, two passing bays were stripped-out to accommodate bi-directional flow of tourist coaches. During all phases of construction and widening there have been episodes of strain bursting.The condition of the tunnel and standard of internal services is below current international practice, principally in terms of; in-tunnel air quality, fire life safety, ground support, and road safety. A number of near-miss events have occurred involving coach fires on the approaches and inside the tunnel. The national road authority, NZTA, is considering a substantial investment to improve amenity and safety of the tunnel.This paper describes the rationale for the proposed upgrade works and the investigations undertaken to enable that design. A holistic approach to road tunnel safety has been adopted that balances the key interrelated safety drivers, namely; tunnel lining, traffic operations, ventilation, power supply and egress while ensuring continuity of safe access to Milford Sound.

Project Controls cost and scheduling systems provide the Leaders with timely information on which to base their decisions.The Client (Owner) will invest up to three per cent of the project cost on Project Controls. To ensure that this investment is effective, the Owner or Manager must have a clear understanding of the information required from the Project controls systems. If appointing a single Managing Contractor, the Owner or Manager must stipulate what is and what is not required from the Project Controls Systems. There are numerous computer programs available for scheduling and cost control and it is important to select systems which best serve the Owner's needs.

This paper presents the evolution of the studies and strategic plans to extend the life of operations at the Savage River iron ore project in north-western Tasmania. The current Life-of-Mine (LOM) plan for the Savage River operations is based on a series of open pits. Drilling has confirmed high-grade extensions of the magnetite resource at depths that exceed practical limits for open pit mining. Grange Resources Limited, the owner of the operation, is investigating underground options – not only to extend the LOM plan but also to maintain peak production at a reduced operating cost while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the future. What makes this project unique is that it requires introducing a productive and cost-effective mining method to exploit a challenging geotechnical and geometrical orebody in an area of high rainfall. To support the study efforts, the development of an exploration decline, underground drilling programs, and an exploratory drive excavated into the orebody for geotechnical investigation was key to providing the necessary data for a pre-feasibility study (PFS). This paper describes the pragmatic approach and processes to developing the underground mining options study through data collection and then integrating these options into the open pit plans to optimise an overall strategic plan for the Savage River operations. The learnings for operators from this experience are how the technical and pragmatic approaches were aligned to develop the strategic plans, and the importance of timely investment in gathering the necessary data.

Resurgence in Au exploration during the past decade has been characterised by a considerable emphasis and dependence on geochemical procedures. This has been made possible, firstly, by marked improvements in analytical sensitivity over those previously available and secondly, of particular importance to exploration in Australia, by a better understanding of the distribution of Au in the regolith, which has led to the optimisation of sample media. These developments have given exploration companies the ability to seek and detect subtle and widespread geochemical signatures of concealed Au mineralisation and provided an enhanced capability to interpret the data. As a consequence, several new discoveries have been made, even in areas that have been intensively explored in the past. In the deeply weathered Yilgarn Craton (WA), and in equivalent areas elsewhere in Australia and overseas, Au has accumulated in the upper lateritic gravels and duricrusts of the regolith, probably during humid climatic periods in the Tertiary. The laterites may not only be Au ores in themselves, but research by CSIRO and CRC LEME has shown them to be very important sample media, (eg Anand and Smith, 1992). In many areas, however, the laterite has been eroded and hence is unavailable as a sample medium and chemical modification under more and conditions since the Tertiary has leached Au from the upper saprolite. This has greatly increased the difficulties of exploration, particularly where reliance was placed on sampling between 2 and 15 m of the surface. Further research, however, has demonstrated that, despite this leaching, recent remobilisation of An has caused it to concentrate in a specific soil component, pedogenic carbonate, usually in the top I - 2 m, thereby giving surface expression even to mineralisation that is concealed by over 20 in of leached overburden. Secondary carbonates, commonly referred to as calcrete, may precipitate as calcite and/or dolomite in regoliths where the average annual rainfall is less than about 600 mm. Pedogenic carbonates are those that form in unsaturated (vadose) soil horizons. They are widely distributed in the Gawler and Yilgarn Cratons. In the Yilgarn Craton south of about 30¦S ('the Menzies Line'), they are seemingly more abundant over more basic rocks and towards the south east (Figure 1). In contrast, groundwater calcretes form in saturated (phreatic) environments, typically in the axes of major drainages north of the Menzies Line. These are known to accumulate economically-significant grades of U but not, apparently, An.

An alternative leaching system for rare earth element recovery from monazite is under development. The initial stage utilises oxalic acid to convert the rare earth phosphate into an oxalate salt through dissolution and reprecipitation and it is the efficiency of this stage that governs the overall recovery achieved. It has previously been proposed that lixiviant consumption is the primary limitation in this process. This work further investigates a range of conditions in an attempt to further elucidate the factors influencing the achievable conversion in this stage. It has been shown that the pH may be governed by multiple reactions both consuming and producing acid (thus the mild change over time). The importance of proper mixing and potential to operate at lower temperature with only moderate impact on kinetics has also been demonstrated. Staged/sequential leaching is more effective in fresh solution as opposed to restoring the lixiviant concentration with subsequent reagent addition, suggesting some impact of solution composition. However, contrary to previous findings, subjecting the leach residue to fresh solution resulted in significant decline in leach rate and overall dissolution. This may be because a greater proportion of conversion was achieved in stage 1 in this work than in previous investigation. This may indicate that eventual passivation or the presence of some more refractory REE minerals limits dissolution. Iron dissolution was relatively consistent upon exposure to fresh solution, displaying the ability of the solution to continue to leach the goethite component of the concentrate.

To solve the mining safety and health needs of the future, access to, and sharing of, timely and relevant information will be crucial. The next generation of the Web will provide tools (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc) to define and link content for more effective discovery, integration, and reuse across applications and organisations. A recent Gartner Research Report (Finding and exploiting value in Semantic Web technologies on the web, May 2007) predicts these technologies will begin to coalesce in ten years. Implementing this Semantic Web requires structured web content described via metadata (information about information). If an industry or enterprise bases its metadata on a common vocabulary, it becomes possible to share and reuse information. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and HealthÆs (NIOSH) Mining web site provides access to more than 1500 NIOSH-developed publications, products, and topic pages on issues as diverse as ground control, respiratory diseases, and mine emergency management. As the site has grown, locating content has become increasingly difficult. To improve the searching process, a panel of internal experts representing all major research programs was established to develop a controlled vocabulary for indexing that content. The outcome is the NIOSH Mining Safety and Health Thesaurus, a faceted, hierarchical thesaurus containing hundreds of mining safety and health terms organised into 20 facets (eg diseases, injuries and disorders; hazardous events and exposures, equipment, engineering and administrative controls). One immediate goal of this project is to reduce the complexity of locating information on the NIOSH Mining web site by implementing metadata and faceted information retrieval techniques. Another goal is to stimulate discussion in the international mining community regarding developing metadata standards so the industry is ready to adopt future Semantic Web technologies to improve access to mining safety and health information.

Many mines have an interest in improving fragmentation at their sublevel caving operations in order to produce better ore recovery, lower dilution and less overbreak. The primary requirement for the extraction phase is to understand and optimise the flow of the fragmented rock in the rings including interactions with the caved material. Rock fragment formation is critically controlled by the blasting phase and can potentially be improved by optimising the dynamic energy distribution throughout the ring through the crafting of explosive charging, priming position and initiation timing. The modelling of fragmentation and damage due to explosive loading of complete rings is inherently and irrevocably a three dimensional problem that is difficult to address. We have therefore initially utilised an analytical code to predict vector peak particle velocities and energies that are restricted to the plane of a ring. Dynamic energy distributions based on common timing and priming practice have been compared with other possibilities using conventional pyrotechnic detonators as well as initiation designs based on accurate electronic detonators. The energy distribution can be quite subtly tailored to increase energy in appropriate regions or to decrease energy in the brow region for example to potentially reduce instability and the probability of misfires. We have also recently developed the capability to efficiently model particle flow using four-sided polygonal elements. Despite the 2D limitations of such a model this results in more realistic fragment interaction and stacking than can be achieved using conventional rigid circular elements. Modelling of a typical sublevel caving ring utilising these elements activated by the correct dynamics offers considerable potential for understanding the influence of the blasting energetics and timing on the complex flow and extraction process.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. The use of ammonia as a leaching agent in the recovery of copper from ores and concentrates has a number of potential benefits. These include the ability to treat ores with an acid consuming gangue, non-corrosivity, the insolubility of iron in the solution and increased selectivity. This paper reviews the previous and current use of ammonia based leaching systems for copper recovery and presents the results of a laboratory investigation that involved leaching of a copper concentrate and a low-grade ore. The effects of the operating variables (particle size, oxygen addition, agitation and temperature) are discussed. Of these, the particle size had the greatest effect, with decreasing size giving improved leaching rates and recoveries. The possibility of using ammonium salts in heap leaching is also discussed, and the results of some small-scale column leach tests presented. Possible methods for recovering the copper from the leach solution are outlined, and the types of ores and concentrates for which ammonia leaching may prove to be a viable alternative processing route are discussed.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

German hard coal mining operations have decreased for more than 40 years. Current political decisions are leading to a discontinuation of subsidised black coal mining by the year 2018. This decision will, however, be reviewed once again in the year 2012. The enormous increases in productivity, which were achieved in previous years, have so far not led to an achievement of market requirements. Coal mining at depth of more than 1200 m in multiple seam environments is not yet competitive in global comparison. In 2008 the 24 faces left in eight mines produced about 20 million tonnes of usable steam coal. Management and the workforce will be reduced in parallel; from today until 2012 by more than half. The average age of personnel is increasing dramatically and nearly no new personnel are recruited. With this background in mind, increasing continuously coal mining productivity becomes more and more difficult. Above all, this goal was reached by mechanisation, then by increasing the mining machine power and then by enhanced machine control systems. The first attempts to automatically operate full face equipment from above ground were in the early 1980s. After successful automation of the face equipment, the emphasis is now on mine logistics. Autonomous monorail transport was introduced and tested in 2007. Since the development rate of machine improvements has its limits, the focus is on the full interaction of the total production system. Here information technology (IT) becomes important; the driver for more productivity. Actual developments aim for the complete and general homogeneous IT infrastructure both above ground as well as underground. The explosive environment needs high level investments in safe technology, eg access points for WLAN and fibre optics for underground use (ATEX certification). New technology availability also drives the enhancements of management and process control systems. Innovations in the mining industry often comprise technology advances through the adoption of well-known technologies. With virtual reality (VR) teaching and training systems advanced computational instruments, both in software and hardware development, were applied in the German coal mining industry for ten years. Widening lists of applications as well as the encouraging achievements show the economical benefits of investing in virtual reality technology both for teaching and training and for knowledge management. The paper discusses the actual technical achievements as well as in IT infrastructure utilisation and also in employment of virtual reality based systems. Special focus and deeper insight will be given to the fibre optics and WLAN hardware integration as well as software developments. The pocket personal computer (PC) is used to enhance underground material transport and data acquisition. The knowledge-based maintenance system (KBMS) integrates real-time virtual reality knowledge elements, such as repair process descriptions. It gives access to expert documentation by intelligent search algorithms and 3D representations of major mining machinery.

Grade control is a process that requires the interaction between many components of the mining operation and successful grade control is only realised through good data, robust systems, and a well-trained, motivated and disciplined workforce.The Mt Magnet Gold Project Pty Ltd (MMGP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramelius Resources Limited, started mining at Mt Magnet in February 2012 with high expectations for success. Positive cash flow would fund an aggressive exploration and mine development program in the area to increase mine life. Disappointment followed when after start-up the operation had issues achieving budget grade and realising the predicted grade of the mined ore. In January 2013, things started to improve. During the next six months, gold production steadily increased with successive months achieving record production. What had changed?Improvements started following the realisation that controlling grade was not the sole responsibility of the mining geologist and that everyone on-site has a role to play. Minerals are valuable resources and critical elements for a broad range of biological and technological applications, including technological developments to improve energy efficiency and the global movement to promote a low-carbon economy. However, in order to extract these critical metals, large amounts of waste and toxic chemicals are generated, as well as the use of high energy and large amounts of water consumption. Froth flotation is one of the most commonly used processes to separate and collect high-value minerals, but it still has some limitations, including low flotation efficiency performances using existing collectors and other reagents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design and develop new metal-specific collectors to more efficiently separate and recover valuable minerals and to allow bulk water recovery from flocculated tailings. In this research, we propose to use our newly designed and synthesised novel collectors derived from a type of vitamin E (α-tocopherol), a relatively inexpensive and non-toxic natural molecule. As a potential collector-building block, α-tocopherol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain that facilitates the attachment to air bubbles during the froth flotation process. In addition, the phenol group of this molecule can be easily modified to incorporate various functional groups for targeting different types of minerals. Furthermore, α-tocopherol can be converted into a monomer for polymerisation by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) process, which can provide us with polymer based-collectors with high precision control of molecular weight and architecture. So far, small-scale qualitative experiments on α-tocopherol-based collectors have been performed with good results, which indicates the feasibility of these compounds as novel collectors for improved froth flotation processes.
