Incidents associated with spontaneous combustion of coal have resulted in the loss of many lives and considerable capital and equip- ment. Nevertheless, the factors controlling the propensity of coal to spontaneous combustion are not clearly understood and there is a need for research to study the effects of rank, petrog- raphy, moisture contents, etc. This has been attempted in a study of the propensities of selected Queensland coals to spontaneous combustion. An adiabatic calori- meter was constructed to study the self-heating of a large number of coals. Chemical and petro- graphic analyses of the coals were determined and an attempt was made to relate these propert- ies to the self-heating characteristics of the coal. The results show a strong relationship between rank and self-heating characteristics and that petrographic composition of coal may also be of importance. Some observations on the application of the laboratory results to the practical situation are made as are recommendations for future research.

Sheet flotation is a new two dimensional column flotation cell that produces continuous spectrum of products. Analogous to a shaking table in its performance and analysis, sheet flotation is a sheet of bubbles rising through packing contained between two walls. Feed enters the sheet at the lower left and the product exit along the top and right edges. Iligh grade materials exit at the top left, middlings exit at the top right comer and low grade waste materials exit at the bottom right. As in the case of a shaking table, two motions are required: up and right. Bubbles furnish the upwards movement for hydrophobic particles, slanted packing the rightward movement for hydrophilic particles. The sheet flotation cells is analysed as a 40 x 40 array of simple cells. In practice, 1000 x 1000 arrays of simple cells may be expected. With larger arrays, excellent separations may be expected. Technological developments in modem Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and associated back-up equipment are offering significant alternatives for mining operators to consider, in the selection of equipment for coal mine development drifts, roadways, longwall gate roads as well as metalliferous mining declines and development drives.Greater flexibility in handling variable ground conditions, muck disposal and radius of turn as well as advance rates, are just some of the areas where modem TBMs can accomplish the flexibility that mine operators require to achieve cost-effective developments.Compact TBMs are achieving this acceptance because of the fundamental design of a shielded machine containing electrics and hydraulics within the forward shell, ability to achieve tight radius of curvature and grades, and ability to provide highly flexible support systems to meet all possible ground conditions.However, a single TBM design will not suit all mine developments, as each development method - while having common goals with all mine developments - will also require certain unique criteria to be fulfilled.

The highest grades of the Porgera gold deposit, Papua New Guinea, are contained in Zone 7 due to the presence of the Roamane fault, which acted as channelway of the gold-bearing fluids. Prior to the development and underground mining of this fault-controlled high-grade zone it was critical to provide grade estimates of relatively small mining units, and of the proportion of mining units above cutoff. To be applicable to Zone 7 of Porgera a grade estimation method should account for the following:1. the highly skewed and apparently lognormal distribution of the grades,2. the rapid drop off of the local mean grade and the variance as the distance to the Roamane fault increases,3. the presence of high grade pockets in the footwall, away from that fault, and4. the existence of variograms for the logs with sills parallel to the fault and without sills perpendicular to it.

The Iron Prince orebody occurs within the Lower Middleback Jaspilite Horizon of the Middleback Group and consists of hematite within host rocks of jaspilites and schists. The ore was probably the product of leaching of silica from jaspilites and replacement by iron, concentrations occurring in suitable structural traps. The narrowness and the presence of extensive dolerite amphibolite dykes within the orebody make it essential to operate a grade control programme in advance of the faces. Information from drilling is drawn up on bench plans, step plans and impurity overlays, and these serve both in day to day production planning and in long term planning. Mining is done selectively by open-pit methods and blending conducted by keeping at least three faces of different grades of ore open at any one time. No stock piles of ore are kept for blending, but contact ore, contaminated ore and enriched material are dumped for later beneficiation.

Mining operations have been carried out at Mt. Lyell for the past century. Until the 1970's the location of the mines in relation to the surface topography has enabled the mines to drain their copious inflows of water by gravity. Deeper mining has forced the Company to undertake pumping of increasing inflows of water. A major pumping facility is being established near the base of the known ore reserves with a view to serving the future requirements of the mines. The system has a design capacity of 600 litres per second. Run of mine water will be treated in Vertical Flow Settlers to produce clear water and thickened mud, each of which will be disposed of separately. The clear water will be pumped by six 1000 kW conven- tional centrifugal pumps. The thickened mud will be removed by a Hydraulic Displacement System. The rising mains for both the mud and the clear water are stainless steel cased bore- holes.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

Troy Resources NL acquired a 70 per cent interest in the Mina Sertpo gold project in Goißs State, Brazil, in 2001 following a successful bid for the highly competitive international tender of a tenement package put out by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The Sertpo deposit is located on cleared grazing land 380 km west of Brasilia and is 30 per cent owned by Amazonia Mineracao Ltda, a private Brazilian company. It is a small high grade open-pittable orebody with a measured and indicated resource of 108 000 tonnes at a grade of 49.7 g/t for 172 500 ounces using a 2.0 g/t cut-off. Troy undertook the project management and development of the project while Amazonia managed the exploration activities and provided other services as required. The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, scouring the world to locate an available and suitable second-hand plant, and arranging shipping to andreconstruction in Brazil.

Although significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanics of pit slopes, numerical modelling hasnÆt significantly impacted on the reliability of the design process. It is well known that legacy modelling approaches donÆt simulate large slopes well. In recent times, the emergence of very large finite element (FE) models with more than ten million degrees of freedom and the ability to simulate a large number of discrete structures, has allowed a step change in the simulation precision for slopes. The model size allows global and local effects to be realistically simulated in one model for the first time and the process can be better integrated into normal open pit slope engineering processes. Some examples of simulation of very large open pits are shown that demonstrate the challenges and some recent advances in modelling large slope behaviour. Significant limitations in the current measurement and observation regimes of open pits have been identified.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. Strain-type rockbursts, or strainbursts, are characterised by a localised violent failure. Their cause is attributed primarily to the sudden release of strain energy, which accumulates in a volume of highly stressed rock as a result of mining activities. Examples of such phenomena are crown/sill pillar bursts created in the mining process, pillar crush in room-and-pillar mining, face ejection in drift development headings at depth, and floor bursts associated with deep shaft sinking. The paper describes a simple method for the assessment of crown pillar bursts in steeply dipping ore deposits which are extracted by the overhand cut-and-fill method. The method is based on a theory previously established by the author to help assess the need for a remedial solution such as pillar destress blasting. Basically, the mining-induced energy storage rate (ESR) in the pillar is compared with the critical strain energy to come up with the so-called burst potential index (BPI).

Quartz, adularia and clay minerals from low-sulfidation epithermal veins at Hishikari were analyzed for their oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope compositions to establish the source of paleohydrothermal waters. Positive correlation between Au-Ag and adularia: quartz ratio, the presence of quartz pseudomorphs of bladed calcite, and Au-bearing smectite and vermiculite is indicative, but not definitive, evidence for the control of boiling on ore mineralization. Oxygen isotope equilibrium temperatures between quartz and adularia are about 220¦C and average homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions vary between 190 to 210¦C. The calculated d18OH2O and dDH2O values (from quartz, adularia and early smectite) are consistent with paleohydrothermal fluids that were a mixture of magmatic and meteoric waters, or alternatively, the values could derive from heated meteoric water which had undergone isotope exchange during circulation through basement rock. Overall, d18Oqtz values in veins increase toward the north, most likely reflecting palaeo-fluid flow (source).

Japan is the largest coal importer in the world, importing from Australia, China, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, etc. In Indonesia, most of the produced coal is extracted from open cut mines. More open cut coal mines will be developed to fill the demand for coal in Indonesia and the world. Many surveys and projects for developing new coal mines and transferring mining technology are being conducted in tropical counties such as Indonesia and Vietnam with the aid of the Japanese Government. It has, however, been pointed out that excessive and precarious development of mines in tropical areas will damage the environments around the mines including cultivated lands, and reduce the precious rainforest. This would undoubtedly exacerbate the instability of the global climate and the food crisis in the world. This paper describes the effects of flyash on the control of acid mine drainage in order to avoid potential negative impacts on the environment caused from open cut coal mines.

McConnell Dowell is pleased to be given the opportunity to present two papers to this conference. The first is a general discussion paper on our work in the field of slurry transportation. The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. There has been a gradual increase in the volume of internationally traded thermal and coking coal, with emphasis on blending of coals rather than single coal usage. New Zealand can take advantage of this situation, especially with its low ash and sulphur content coals. However, there is a need to clarify the thermal and coking behaviour of these coals as they relate to other market players, to benefit both the consumer and supplier. The high volatile matter contents of New Zealand coking coals are due to their high vitrinite content, which causes them to demonstrate stronger coking properties over a wider rank range than Gondwana coals. These same high vitrinite levels appear to correspond with lower initial softening temperatures than for Gondwana coals of similar rank. Preliminary results using thermogravimetric analysis also suggest that New Zealand high volatile bituminous coals can be used to substitute for higher rank Gondwana coals in combustion processes.
