GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. The Gippsland Basin is one of Australia's most important producers of petroleum products. An inevitable byproduct of the production, refinement and transport of the millions of barrels of oil is thousands of tonnes of waste. These wastes are generated from the wellhead through to the petrol bowser and range from oily brines and coal tars to oil and petrol contaminated soils. The vast majority of these wastes are of a relatively low toxicity and most importantly are carbon-based and biodegradable. Current disposal practices tend to ignore the latter characteristic and inappropriate and/or expensive waste disposal solutions such as landfilling (tipping), incineration or ocean outfalls are the result. A very cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative is land treatment of such wastes. Landfarming, as it is called, has been successfully practiced in Europe for over a decade. Essential features of the system are: ò Application of a predetermined quantity of biodegradable waste in liquid, sludge or highly contaminated soil form, to pre-ploughed soil with concurrent addition of nutrients (N, P and trace elements) and lime to encourage bacterial activity. ò Harmless bacteria already present within the soil break down the carbon-based compounds into carbon dioxide, water and waste heat, WHILE concurrently generating new cells. The breakdown occurs over a period of weeks to months and continues with time with the extremely low levels of the more difficult waste types being the last to disappear. ò Further waste is applied to the soil at regular intervals. The treatment area may be dedicated to landfarming or may be used alternatively for agricultural purposes. Application rates vary but may be as high as 800 tonnes per hectare per year for wastes such as refinery sludges.

The Hilton and George Fisher deposits occur 22 and 24 km north of Mount Isa, NW Qld, Australia respectively. Both deposits occur as deformed Proterozoic, sediment hosted, stratiform orebodies hosting Pb-Zn-Ag (Hilton) and Zn-Pb-Ag (George Fisher) mineralisation. The two deposits are separated by approximately 2 km of strongly faulted barren shales, mudstones and siltstones along strike. Despite this, correlations between the Hilton and George Fisher deposits have previously been assumed on the basis of textural, lithological and geochemical similarities, but previously lacked specific details to prove exact stratigraphic matches.Feasibility drilling allowed broad correlations based on the position of siltstone pillars separating individual orebodies. However the position of continuous potassium-rich, siliceous and cross-fractured tuffaceous marker beds (TMBs) often used as stratigraphic markers within the Hilton Mine were initially unrecognised within the George Fisher stratigraphy where they are erratically silicified and often not cross-fractured resulting in correlations being difficult to prove. As a more detailed knowledge of TMB locations at George Fisher was gained it was possible to look for corresponding TMBs within the Hilton orebodies. Recent underground stope definition drilling at the two locations enabled specific TMBs, stratigraphic units and even individual sedimentary beds to be matched between the two locations, despite the large separation between mines.The correlation between the two deposits has implications for future exploration drilling north of George Fisher. If a specific stratigraphic horizon can be determined within one hole, positioning of further drillholes can be more accurately planned. The significance of having stratigraphic matches between Hilton and George Fisher also has implications for correlations with other Isa Valley deposits. Convincing preliminary TM and stratigraphic correlations have already been made between George Fisher and the Isa Lead Mine 24 km to the south.

Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. The preparation of separate zinc concentrates and lead concentrates from these samples, and their assaying, was conducted by Mr. Evan Hardy, for the North Broken Hill Mine, and its assodated leases, and by Mr. D., Swan, under the direction of Dr. J. At last year's. annual meeting of The Institute, Sir George Fisher, as President, compared it somewhat nostalgically with a meeting of its kind in the 1920s when comment was expressed on the decline of Australianmining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries.I feel that tonight's annual meeting is even more an occasion for nostalgia, for it represents the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I hope, therefore, that I may be allowed to retrace some of the circumstances of this Institute's origin and at the same time to look at some of the broader happenings of those 75 years.From this distance in time it is, of course, much easier to get things in perspective and one of the things that compels enormous admiration in looking back over the history of our Institute is to note the qualities of foresight and keen concern for professional standards which moved the pioneers in this Institute. They had no benefit of hindsight to aid them.Just over 75 years ago, a small group of men met in Broken Hill to discus.s the possibilities of forming an association of mining engineers. The moving spirit was Uriah Dudley, our first secretary, manager of the Umberumberka mine at Silverton. The first formal move to form an association of mining engineers came from the Amalgamated Mining Managers Association of Australasia. At the time, this association was a fairly new group, being 5 years old.It had been formed to try to raise the standard of management throughout the industry. Uriah Dudley and our first provisional president, John Howell, held their first talks in 1891 and further meetings at Broken Hill followed. The inaugural meeting, attended by 200 members, was held in Adelaide in April, 1893.

The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (Tm of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus Tm data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCl and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO2 , as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %0 and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4%0. Calculated d18Owater values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from 2.0 to -5.7%0, with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.

In the past decade several significant intrusion-related gold deposits have been discovered in terranes historically exploited for tin-tungsten mineralization (eg Tintina Gold Province, Yukon and Alaska, Tasman Fold Belt, Australia and the Altaid orogenic collage in central Eurasia). This paper presents new data on the geological and geochemical characteristics of these deposits that links them to magmatic-hydrothermal processes and highlights their implications for exploration. New data from several intrusion-related gold provinces suggest that these deposits are found in areas that contain granodiorite to granite, but with a locally significant mafic component, have Rb/Sr ratios ranging between 0.1 and 1.0, and are moderately reduced (Fe2O3/FeO ~ 0.1 to 0.6) ilmenite series, metaluminous, I-types. The intrusions are distinct from porphyry copper intrusions and tin granites, but are more akin to tungsten granites. Hydrothermal fluid types vary with depth of emplacement in intrusion-related gold deposits and new proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) data from syn-ore fluid inclusions in shallow and deep deposits provide fascinating insight into the variation in metal content between the different settings consistent with observed deposit metal associations. Exploration for intrusion-related gold deposits in tintungsten terranes should focus on regions that contain both mafic and felsic intrusion that are moderately reduced, metaluminous, I-type granites rather than terranes with dominantly highly fractionated, strongly reduced, peraluminous S-types. Intrusion-related gold systems occur in variety of deposit styles (in part controlled by host rock, proximity to granite, and depth of emplacement) and exploration geologists need to be aware of the variety of target types in and around the intrusive environment, and be able to recognise whether they are exploring a shallow or deep intrusion-related gold setting.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

Fine coal is defined as material with a maximum size of 1/2 in. Various methods for separate washing of such coal are discussed briefly because separate treatment can lead to a higher overall recovery of coal or to a product having a lower ash content.A felspar jig is discussed in detail because it is the method most recently adopted in Australia, and because it has the advantages of compactness, flexibility and automatic Gontrol, with minimum operator attention. This jig has a variety of adjustable controls to enable the desired results to be obtained from a wide range of coals and the general application of each control is discussed.The only separate treatment of fine coal in the Illawarra district is by felspar jigs on Bulli seam coal.INTRODUCTIONAll reasonably large Australian collieries now win coal by mechanical methods. but while mechanization leads to more economic production of high tonnages, it also changes the characteristics of the coal won. In particular there is an increased proportion of fines, and an increased ash and moisture content. However, specifications of coal for sale have become more stringent, and consumers now require coals in a definite size range with a lower and more uniform ash content, as well as with a low and uniform moisturecontent.These factors have led to the need to wash and grade run-of-mine coal at the pithead. In' plants where the whole of the run-of-mine coal is treated in a jig, some of the fine coal in the feed is beneficiated; the extent depending on factors such as the type of coal and the feed rate. However, for dense medium treatment, fine coal must first be screened out, and there may then be no washing of fine coal at all.

The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. Individual specimens of sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode vary considerably in manganese and iron contents, even within the same orebody, so that study of the overall variation of manganese and iron content of the sphalerite calls for the analysis of a large number of specimens. This difficulty has been overcome by analysing a series of recleaned zinc concentrate products, prepared from stope samples and their equivalents, from most of the developed sections of the lode. The analyses reveal that during the formation of the sphalerite the concentrations of iron, manganese and zinc in the mineralizing solutions varied independently of one another from place to place in the forming orebodies, and also in time.The overall pattern of variation of the iron and manganese contents of the sphalerite in the several orebodies of the lode bears a general resemblance to the overall pattern of distribution shown by several other elements, notably, cadmium, lead, bismuth and arsenic. The iron content of the sphalerite indicates that it was formed at a temperature of 6000 C. or higher, but the variation in its iron and manganese contents demonstrates that Kullerud's method for determining the temperature of formation of sphalerite from its iron content must be used with caution if only single specimens of sphalerite are available.INTRODUCTIONThe four chemical analyses available of specimens of practically pure sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode (Table 1) reveal that the manganese content of the sphalerite varies considerably, and that there is a significant variation in its iron content. The variations revealed between individual specimens within the same orebody in the same mine suggest that specimen material is unsatisfactory as a basis for studying the overall manganese and iron contents of Broken Hill sphalerite, unless a great number of specimensis analysed.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

A drive, 3,500 ft long, was planned to explore mineralization exposed by diamond drilling. A rate of advance of 150 ft per fortnight, approximately double previous Broken Hill rates, was required. Subsequent to the completion of this drive its extension for a further 6,200 ft was planned to provide a main haulage way along which ore could be transported from a newly acquired lease back to the main hoisting shaft, a total distance of 13,500 ft.This paper describes the working conditions, relationships, manning and costs, and gives details of the cycle and equipment used to achieve rates up to 170 ft per fortnight.OBJECTIVEDiamond drilling from the 1,000 ft level at the Delprat Shaft section had indicated that the zone of mineralization, about 150 ft wide, which had been explored on the 1,000 ft level for a length of 2,600 ft, continued downwards with a westerly dip. The drilling results showed that within this wide zone there were arrower lenses of mineralization of possibly payable grade (see composite plan, Fig. 1).Diamond drill holes of 2,000 ft and over, particularly through heavily sheared areas of sericite schist, had been found to be costly, slow, and inadequate in testing the potential and trends of these smaller concentrations of mineralization.It was therefore decided that an exploratory drive should be advanced from the northern limit of the 1,480 ft level into the western mineralization, and that from this drive diamond drill holes should be drilled at dose intervals to outline the ore.The 1,480 ft level was chosen for the following reasons.1. It had the greatest northerly reach of the accessible levels at No. 7 Shaft section below the 1,000 ft horizon and therefore would enable the test to be made most quickly.

A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Six of these 5-ton per day units were operating in the mid-thirties, but have since been demolished. The paper describes the search for mineral deposits in an area of 4,500 sq. miles of south-west Tasmania. The area is one of difficult access and the problem of speedy movement and maintenance of field parties was solved by the use of helicopters. The programme has followed a systematic pattern of the aerial photography of the exploration area with the preparation of photQmosaics and topographical base sheets from these mosaics. Geological maps were initially prepared by photogeological interpretation and making use where possible of pre-existing information. The maps produced were later checked by ground traverses. Geophysical maps were obtained by the use of airborne magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric methods. Geophysical and geological anomalies were checked on the ground by a campaign using ground geophysical equipment in the former case and geological and geochemical work in both instances. Audio Frequency Magnetic and Induced Polarization techniques were used in an area which was covered by several hundred feet of Tertiary sediments.The campaign has reached the stage of the drilling of specific targets.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the activities of Lyell-E.Z. Explorations (L.E.E.), an organization which was formed in 1956 by the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Co. Ltd. and the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. to explore for mineral deposits in an area of approximately 4,500 sq. miles in southwest and southern Tasmania. To provide the necessary personnel and equipment for this project the exploration resources of both Companies were pooled and augmented and a headquarters was established in Queenstown. The work was directed by a Committee of four made up of officials from both Companies; a review of this structure has recently been presented by Hall (1959).

The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The combined use of regional whole-rock geochemistry, SWIR and mineral chemistry is an effective way to highlight prospective areas for VHMS mineralisation in a mature exploration province.CITATION:Wu, S, Gemmell, J B, McNeill, A W and Richardson, S M, 2015.
