Distal rhyolitic tephras from the Taupo Volcanic Zone are widespread in the Auckland urban region. Some are primary air fall or flow deposits but most are reworked. Their presence indicates potential hazard for the Auckland urban region from future eruptions of central North Island volcanoes and associated secondary effects. Geotechnical problems occur as a result of weathering of the tephras yielding sensitive materials.

A series of experiments were carried out with Hallimond tube in order to test the effects of different reagents. A good result has been obtained when potassium-n-butyl xanthate is used as collector for molybdenite and graphite complex are depressed by the depressor mixed with nigrosine and iron (III) chloride. The separating mechanism has been studied with help of many modem instruments.

The Paracale gold region had been known for hundreds of years, but the first professional attempts to work the lode and alluvial deposits were made only in the 1890s by the London-based Philippines Mineral Syndicate. Complex ores, transportation problems, and the Philippine Insurrection halted operations. The results from three quick methods for the determination of W03 in scheelite ore samples, mill products and concentrates were compared with gravimetric results and tested with standard samples to establish which was the most reliable. Summaries of the methods, two X-Ray fluorescence and one colorimetric, are given. The best method was X-Ray fluorescence, with samples cast as glass discs.

Numerical modelling is a valuable tool for simulating the fundamental processes that take place during a heating. The models presented in this paper have enabled a quantitative assessment of the effects of initial pile temperature, pile size and mass and coal particle size on the development of a heating. All of these parameters have a certain criticality in the coal self-heating process.

This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. The applications indicate that evolutionary algorithms are particularly suitable to the complex and complicated problems in mines.

The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

Dilution and ore loss have an important bearing on the success of open pit mining projects. Their impacts on production costs, revenues and production rate require that they are correctly modelled in the long-term mine plan. The estimation of dilution and ore loss is therefore an essential part of any Ore Reserve estimate or mine schedule. Large open pit mines are driven by the economies of scale that are achieved at the cost of less selectivity in the discrimination of ore and waste. Planning for these mines is facilitated by the use of block models for mine design, scheduling and the conversion of Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves. This paper reviews various approaches to the estimation of dilution and ore loss, as implemented in computer block models. In the case of orebodies with well-defined sharp boundaries, rather than irregular stockwork mineralisation, the geological interpretation is a critical factor. Variability in the geometry of orebodies is common within large open pits and must be taken into account when estimating dilution and ore loss. A method of regularisation, controlled by the wireframed geological model, is demonstrated, using examples from large open pit stratiform copper and magnetite deposits. This can be carried out without special computer software modules.
