The Selwyn gold-copper operation is wholly owned and operated by the Arimco mining group. The mine is located 150 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. The primary extraction method for the gold-copper 251 orebody is by sub level open stoping. Secondary extraction is from the mass blasting of the remaining crown and rib pillars. The final mass blast of the 251 orebody occurred in December 1993. This paper details the design and execution of that firing.

My purpose here today is to introduce an element of democracy into this seminar. In my experience, the mines of Australia can be divided into two categories; those that pay and those that don't. As far as I can ascertain, every other paper being delivered at this seminar concerns mines which come into the first category, or at any rate are close enough to it for the promoters to be able to afford an expert's valuation.

The role of mining consultants needs to be re-examined, so that the quality of the service they deliver will continue to be adequate for the 1990's. One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. For this style of mineralisation, an empirical approach to define ore characteristics is recommended.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Minnitt, R C A, 2012. Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

Rock mass response in blasting is an important element to determine the performance of a blast along with its other outcomes. The near-field monitoring for rock mass response analysis is vital for determining the behaviour of a blast; however, due to costly and cumbersome methods involved in such measurements the subject has received scant attention so far and the publications on this account are perfunctory in nature. This paper presents a non-destructive method to monitor the blast-induced pressure in the rock mass at a distance from a blasthole. The methodology of monitoring and a few examples of actual field monitoring are detailed in this paper. The responses of the rock in the near-field of a blasthole under dynamic loading have been documented to predict fragmentation and throw. The proposed method has also been used in limited cases earlier by the author to predict flyrock using a semi-empirical method and trajectory equation. The pros and cons of the method are discussed while throwing light on the actual response and the prediction of fragmentation and throw of blasted rock.CITATION:Raina, A K and Murthy, V M S R, 2015. It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. Through an ambitious but relatively low-cost program of marine fieldwork, laboratory investigations and technology-transfer and training activities, three Indonesia-Australia-led marine expeditions were undertaken aboard KR Baruna Jaya VIII between 2001 and 2003. These IASSHA (Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity) cruises have sought to discover and investigate a variety of potential ore forming hydrothermal systems in a range of tectonic settings. All cruises have been successful, both scientifically and from the point of view of training, creation of capabilities and capacity building for such research in Indonesia. Over 60 scientists and technicians from Indonesian and Australian institutions and agencies have been involved. Three new sites and a possible fourth site of hydrothermal activity were discovered in the Sangihe arc in northern Sulawesi. Surveys in the Tomini basin tested a hypothesis based on previous data which suggested this might be an isolated anoxic, brine-filled basin over 2000 m deep where igneous heat sources existed to generate hydrothermal mineralisation. The bay, however, was found to be open to adjacent deep ocean circulation, and there was no evidence of massive base metal sulfides. Subdued evidence of hydrothermal activity was found in the Sunda Strait associated with the famous Krakatau volcano and the extension of the seismically active Semangko Fault. The BANDAMIN program (Indonesia-Germany) covered a portion of the Banda arc in eastern Indonesia, and also found evidence of recent hydrothermal activity and epithermal sulfide mineralisation.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013. The transition from low stress to high stress conditions is a challenge eventually faced by most mines in Australia that extend to depths greater than (generally) about 1000 m. In areas with strongly adverse 'stress versus depth' gradients, such as some parts of Western Australia, significant stress-related problems have occurred at depths as shallow as 300 m below surface. The actual depth at which the 'transition' occurs is a function of the local pre-mining stress field, the strengths of the various rock types hosting the deposit and the layout and sequencing adopted in the mine. Stress-related damage can result in increased support costs, and delays associated with rehabilitation and disruption to production. In the worst case, where strong seismicity and associated damage occurs in active mining areas, 'exclusion' zones and 're-entry' protocols may be required. These can severely disrupt production. A key aspect of managing the transition is the recognition of the onset of stress-related ground behaviour. Damage mapping can be used to develop understanding of the relationships between mining activities and the local and regional response to them. Carefully documented case histories provide a basis for calibrating numerical models. This paper discusses some of the typical styles of ground behaviour observed in higher stress conditions in underground mines. A simple damage classification scheme is described to assist in 'damage mapping' of mine tunnels. An example of damage mapping is presented to illustrate an approach commonly used for recording stress-related damage.

The first target of mining activities on the surface of the moon is to find and extract water from the icy regolith on the moon. A test drilling unit was designed and fabricated under a NASA Early Stage Innovation (ESI) grant. A high-frequency data acquisition system was used to record drilling responses at 1000 Hz. Parameters like weight on bit (WOB), torque, rev/min, rate of penetration (ROP), mechanical specific energy (MSE), field penetration index (FPI), and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were recorded for 40 boreholes in the analog samples made of regolith simulant and specialised cement. Development of the AI system and machine learning (ML) algorithms for analysis of data to evaluate strength and hence water content of icy regolith required a large data set. In this case, the data set comprising of more than one billion data points recorded while drilling into various analogue samples and cryogenic lunar formations to optimise power consumption and make bit wear adjustment during drilling operations. The tests were also repeated in the samples of icy regolith at various water content at -190C to verify the ability of the algorithms to analyse the data and to estimate the strength of the frozen formation and hence water content. The paper will discuss the objectives and methodologies used in the project and reviews the testing program and the machine learning (ML) algorithms ability to identify various formations along the exploration boreholes.

The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Halasu porphyry copper belt, located in the East Junggar basin bounded by Chinese Altay to the north and the Tianshan mountains to the south in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is one of the major porphyry copper belts in Xinjiang province, north-west China. Combined with previous studies in this area, the magmatism can be divided into three periods: pre-mineralisation activity of 390 Ma syn-mineralisation activity of 380–370 Ma post-mineralisation activity of 360–330 Ma.Through the comparison of zircon chemistry from ore-bearing and barren syn-mineralisation intrusions, negative correlation was identified between Ti-in-zircon temperatures and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the fact that late-stage syn-mineralisation granitoids contain high water content, high oxygen fugacity and low temperatures with higher mineralisation potential. In addition, the relative low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, high eHf(t) and eNd(t) values and mantle Pb isotope characteristics in this study support that the magma forming these intrusions was probably derived from juvenile crust generated during subduction-accretionary processes.CITATION:Wu, C and Chen, H, 2015. Quality Assurance has become a buzzword amongst governments and industry. Notwithstanding the world class work done by its committees in developing codes of ethics and of practice in field geological handbooks, mining cost estimation handbooks, and reserve estimation, the AusIMM could better prepare its membership for QA. MICA could provide a simple set of guidelines to enable consultant members to develop their own QA procedures manual conforming to AusIMM Codes and to IS09003, and AS3903.

Details are given of the excellent performance, outside Australia, of steel slag in road pavement surfacing. Laboratory tests and plant trials have shown Port Kembla BOF steel slag to be a material with properties suitable for producing asphaltic concrete which will maintain a high skid resistance in service under heavy traffic. The high density of steel slag is a factor which will result in a cartage cost penalty likely to restrict usage to close to its source.

What is the real value of your data?Given that the cost of collecting and analysing an individual sample is always rising, it is important to understand the true value of a sample and that you are confident that you receive good value for your exploration dollar. Unfortunately too many samples are still collected today that will end up as worthless data; a liability to those who own it and a hindrance to finding that ore body.

This paper describes MIM's experience in arranging and executing project financings for coal projects at Oaky Creek and Newlands and Collinsville and the port facility of Abbot Point.The financings had their origins in the late 1970's and culminated with the opening of these projects during 1983 and 1984.MIM's financing developments therefore span an important period in the development of resource projects in Australia.Resources projects have been growing in both scale and complexity of financing requirements.

Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.
