Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. This paper describes an ongoing study into the management systems developed by mining operations in Papua New Guinea to address particular public health issues in the workforce (primarily communicable and lifestyle diseases). The first stage of the study involves the analysis of the site health and safety management system documentation of three major mining operations in Papua New Guinea, producing a descriptive summary of each system. In the second stage of the study these summary descriptions are evaluated using a maturity model constructed through a detailed review of literature. Experience with the evaluation process is then used to refine the maturity model. The analysis performed in the study is used to develop a process for creating a maturity model for mine site health risk management based on a theoretical risk management framework, and refining it through empirical evaluations of the actual systems in place on site. Companies can use maturity models as a guide to organisational improvement, which in the context of the study will assist the operations in developing their systems for the management of health both in their workforce and in local communities.

Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. Roof bolts are an essential component of roof support systems in underground mines. They are used to provide structural support to the roof of the mine and prevent it from collapsing. Therefore, it is imperative to perform regular assessments of these roof bolts to avert any hazards. Manual investigations of roof bolts are done by surveyors in underground mines, which is extremely timeconsuming and challenging due to the low-light conditions in underground mines accompanied by stringent mine access rules. To this end, automated recognition of roof bolts in 3D point cloud data obtained through laser scanning in underground mines serves as a potential solution to aid roof bolt monitoring. With the continuous advancements in laser scanning-based 3D data acquisition systems, the feasibility of making such surface estimations from 3D point cloud data has increased severalfold.

The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. The results obtained from this process provided confidence in the conceptual extraction rules and allowed the derivation of final extraction rules that will be implemented at the operation as the multiseam mining process becomes more widespread.CITATION:Hanekom, J W L, Roberts, M K C, Magwaza, M G, Lousteau, R and Piper, P, 2014. The research, development and testing of a Blast Control Plug (U.S. Pat. #4,754,705) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The plug's function is to improve blasting efficiency through the enhancement of stemming effectiveness and thereby reduce drilling and blasting costs. The plug comprises a solid unit placed in the blast hole within the stemming column above the explosive. It is designed for use with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable material The research and development program comprised the testing of the plug in small diameter holes in competent rock for both bench and crater blasting configurations and full scale field trials in multiple hole and row blasts using blast holes of from 76 to 387 mm in diameter. Test measurements included stemming displacement and velocity, face movement and extent, peak air over pressure and ground surface peak particle velocity. Data acquisition equipment included a Spin Physics SP2000 high speed video motion analysis system, and acoustic and seismic monitoring units. Substantial reductions in stemming ejection velocity or ejection elimination were achieved whilst reducing stemming length by up to 35% over conventional practice. Peak air blast pressures were also reduced by between 8 and 25 dB. A strong inverse relationship between rock face movement and stemming ejection velocity was found. The implications of the importance of stemming effectiveness in blasting and computer blast simulation is also addressed.

Peak Gold Mines (PGM), a member of the Rio Tinto Group, is an underground and open cut gold mining operation located near Cobar, NSW. A multi-phase study was initiated in 2001 in support of developing a dry æmoisture store and releaseÆ cover system design for the PGM tailings dam, which contains potentially acid-forming tailings material. The first phase consisted of characterising the tailings and potential cover material (waste rock from an open cut operation) as well as soil-atmosphere cover design modelling. The second phase involved construction of two cover system field trials on the tailings dam and installation of a variety of field instruments to monitor the hydraulic performance of the test covers during all seasons of the year. Field performance monitoring commenced in April 2002 and will continue for a minimum of two wet-dry climate cycles (third phase), prior to using the field data for calibration and subsequent validation of numerical models developed for the cover system trials (fourth phase). This paper describes the work completed for the first two project phases and also discusses the initial performance of the cover system trials.

Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. Environmental compliance and mine designs are increasingly including assessment of flows and water qualities as a key driver to decision-making over life-of-mine. Integrated site-wide water quality models linked to dynamic water balances have been used for regulatory submissions, feasibility studies, operating mines and mine closure studies. These models, developed in GoldSim, link aqueous chemistry to the physical system of the site-wide water balance. Geochemical mechanisms included are determined from geochemical characterisation and site water monitoring, depending on the data availability at each site. External geochemical modelling using PHREEQC, version 2 (by D?L?Parkhurst and C?A?J?Appelo) and Geochemists Workbench (GWB), (by C?M?Bethke and The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois) identifies the most important geochemical processes to be included in the model as a series of geochemical mechanisms which include source term loading rates, pH-buffering and equilibration of water quality. Water balance components include seasonal flow variability; waste facility water storage and system lags; run-off variability; milling processes and tailings production as a function of ore types; simulation of automated and scheduled maintenance of settling ponds; water re-routing for water treatment and freshwater demand, usage and storage.Case studies illustrating the use of these models for regulatory submissions and mine feasibility studies in a variety of climatic and regulatory environments show the utility and applicability of these models. Site-specific examples of these models developed by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd are currently used at operating mines across the world. One of the larger mines where this is used is a mature poly-metallic mine in South America where the model has aided mine managers in understanding how various planned initiatives and potential water options will result in changes to flows and water quality. It is used regularly to inform water and waste management to minimise impacts to the receiving environment as a consideration of both flows and concentrations. The mine has also used the model in support of water treatment design, regulatory submissions and mine closure planning.Further examples of feasibility and operational/compliance assessment in arid and strongly seasonal environments for planning, regulatory and closure consideration of mine wastes and pits have shown the utility and usefulness of these approaches for a range of mining operations at various stages of mine life.CITATION:Strand, R and Usher, B, ?2014. Upstream embankment raises often represent the lowest cost option for increasing the capacity of tailings storage facilities (TSF), but also pose the highest stability risk due to constructing on top of previously deposited tailings.This paper presents an overview of key aspects in the geotechnical investigation and design of upstream raises and some recent lessons learnt from experience across a number of TSFs in Australia. A summary of recommended field investigation and laboratory testing methods is provided with a focus on collecting quality information for design purposes. A strong focus is given in developing an accurate assessment of pore water pressures, which, if not correctly understood can have disastrous consequences on tailings strength parameter interpretation and wall stability assessment in static and post-seismic conditions.The assessment of the contractive or dilative shearing behaviour of the tailings material and rigorous interpretation of design characteristic values are presented. Daunia and Caval Ridge coal mines, owned and operated by BHP, have been co-disposing rejects and dewatered tailings within spoil dumps from the beginning of their operations in 2013 and 2014, with the purpose of minimising environmental impact and geotechnical risk. Following the recent large failures of tailings dams around the world, BHP Coal, through its Coal Tailings Program, plans to transition other coal mines to deliver “dry” tailings and produce mixed plant rejects (MPR) for inpit co-disposal. This will materially reduce future tailings dam risk exposure. Previous laboratory shear strength testing was conducted on rejects with a maximum particles size of 20 mm, and some concerns were raised that this might not represent the mechanical properties of the actual full particle size distribution (PSD) rejects. BHP was also aware that using different technologies to dewater the tailings, such as belt press filters (BPF) and solid bowl centrifuge (SBC), could produce thickened tailings which could significantly modify the physical behaviours of the MPRs, particularly the bonding between particles. Therefore, laboratory testing on both coarse rejects and mixtures of the coarse rejects and dewatered tailings (MPRs), with full PSDs, was carried out. Testing was performed using the large direct shear machine developed by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C20019 in 2017, as well as a 300 mm diameter triaxial apparatus at the University of Newcastle (UoN). This paper presents details of the laboratory testing program and results for the rejects from the first studied mine of the BHP Coal Tailings Program. It compares the shear strengths measured at full scale with those tested on modified (scalped or crushed) specimens in the past; and discusses the tailings dewatering technique selection from geotechnical aspects based on the testing results, and finally presents some dump and tip head stability analysis results using the testing results.

The value of Raman spectroscopy to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation of iron ores was assessed by applying the technique to representative samples of banded iron-formations (BIF) and a BIF-derived, martite-goethite ore. The common iron oxides haematite, magnetite and goethite as well as gangue minerals such as quartz and carbonates all show distinct Raman spectra that enables these phases to be easily detected and mapped in situ for either samples prepared as polished blocks or unprepared material. Raman spectroscopy also offers the potential of in situ chemical characterisation. Shifts in the excitation bands of carbonate detected in BIF were related to the Mg content of Fe-carbonate and confirmed the first world-wide occurrence of a high Mg-bearing siderite (pistomesite) in BIF.The discriminatory power of Raman spectroscopy coupled with the potential of the technique to offer large-scale (volumetric) characterisation of iron ore will be of great value not only to the existing BID and CID ore types, but also to the newly emerging magnetite iron deposits (MID).

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

VV Mineral (VVM) group of companies is the largest and the first private producer and exporter of beach sand mineral products in India. During 2010, the company produced and marketed around 750 000 tons of saleable products. Their operations are mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, India. Almost all the wet pre-concentration plants use sea water as the concentration medium, since there is no fresh water source available near the deposits. The mines are located along the south-east coast of India in the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The orebody varies in terms of mineral assemblage, slime content, grain size, and surface coating resulting in different behaviour of the minerals. Three different deposits containing ilmenite of different TiO2 content were studied. The study shows that there is no significant impact of using sea water for wet concentration prior to high tension separation of ilmenite. There is no significant variation in recovery and purity of ilmenite produced from these deposits when wet concentration of the deposits were carried out with sea water as the concentration medium and whether the concentrates were washed with fresh water or not before dry separation using High Tension Roll Separators (HTRS).

Does coal mining get enough out of its people?. In a number of cases, Yes. Several companies have rethought their management systems and accordingly are improving their utilisation of people to improve productivity. For some, capital and technology are the panacea for improved productivity and lower costs. Computerised mine planning, improved beneficiation processes, heftier longwall equipment, bigger trucks and shovels and upgraded coal clearance systems are expected to provide the answers.Whilst these factors are important they only contribute to part of the productive potential of a mining operation. Production flexibility provided by recent Industry award changes has brought about increases in total output. However, these improvements have not been matched by corresponding decreases in the unit cost of production.

The European Union (EU) have recently issued new Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) for diesel exhaust contaminants, which are CO, NO2 and DPM. The new limits for CO and NO2 were issued in 2017 whilst the one for DPM was issued in 2019. However, in order to allow EU mines to formulate strategies to comply with these new limits, the EU granted a transition period in which mines could use the old limits until the new limits are enforced. The new limit for CO and NO2 will be enforced from 21 August 2023 whilst the one for DPM will be enforced from 21 February 2026. The new limit for NO2 and DPM is very low, 0.5 ppm for NO2 and 0.05 mg/m3 of Elemental Carbon (EC) for DPM. Combination of these two limits would be the lowest among all mining jurisdictions worldwide. It poses a huge compliance challenge to EU mines if they keep using diesel machines. Therefore, a study and a field trial were carried out by the author in 2019–2021 to investigate whether replacing diesel machines with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) would be the best answer to this challenge. This paper outlines results of this study and field trial.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

The Canahuire deposit is a recently discovered Au-Cu-Ag epithermal deposit in Southern Peru. A geometallurgy program is a key study element of the project Feasibility study. Metallurgical, mineralogical, and comminution studies have been completed over a suite of samples, spatially distributed among the various geological/ore domains. The early stage of Canahuire presents challenges as there is a lack of metallurgical information to guide geometallurgical sampling, in contrast with an established deposit at a more advanced stage of development or mining. Nevertheless, the available information will assist in the development of geometallurgical domains for Canahuire in order to ensure that future metallurgical, mineralogical, and comminution test work is representative of the deposit variability. This supplementary knowledge will be able to predict important metallurgical parameters which will be incorporated into a geometallurgical model to spatial predict material types, metallurgical recovery and through put. The information obtained will be a valuable addition to the future mine plan, influencing process design, engineering design, plant operation, operating and capital costs, and ultimately will reduce project development risk.

The 1999 edition of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the æJORC CodeÆ) became effective in September 1999 and is the latest revision of a Code which was originally issued in 1989, but which has an ancestry dating back to the first JORC report released in 1972. The modifications introduced in 1999, which are briefly discussed in this paper, substantially improved the document, but did not materially alter the fundamentals of the Code, these being the Mineral Resource/Ore Reserve classification framework and terminology, and the requirements and guidelines for public reporting of Resources and Reserves. Codes or guides similar to the JORC Code exist or are under development in other countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. It is pleasing to note that the 1999 JORC Code has been used as a model by these countries in developing their latest standards, and has been a major influence in the formulating of international reporting standards. The JORC Code is primarily a document covering the reporting of the results of mining companiesÆ activities to the public. However, mining geologists are interested in practical assistance and guidance in carrying out their duties. The JORC Code provides this in four ways. It establishes a framework within which those preparing and publicly reporting Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates must operate, by setting standards for the classification and reporting of Resources and Reserves and for qualifications of Competent Persons. It establishes the division of responsibility between the companyÆs Board of Directors and Competent Persons with respect to the preparation and reporting of Resources and Reserves, and empowers Competent Persons to materially influence how their Resource/Reserve estimates are reported to the public. It provides an extensive, detailed and practical check list of criteria to be taken into account in the preparation of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates. Finally, it provides a strong measure of due diligence protection in the event of litigation if it is followed with diligence and honesty.
