For utilization of solid carbonaceous materials produced in processes of cracking heavy oil, such as petroleum pitch, as powder fuel, it is necessary to develop a process for fine grinding of these materials. It is known that grinding' additives are effective for fine grinding of cohesive and heat-sensitive materials such as petroleum pitch, therefore in this study, effective methods for fine grinding of petroleum pitch with some grinding additives were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using comminution kinetics based on mass balance. From the results of the investigation by using a batch ball mill, it was found that sodium stearate, calcium stearate and carbon black were effective additives for the improvement of grinding efficiency. Optimum concentration of the grinding additives was also found to give a required particle size of products. Concerning to the action mechanism of these additives, it is considered that the additives which adhired to, or were absorbed on the surface of petroleum pitch particles not only prevented cohesion of the particles but improved dispersion of the particles as well. From the results of the investigation by using a laboratory screen mill which is a representative built-in classifiered impact crusher, carbon black was found to be an effective additive for the improvement of grinding efficiency and mill performance. It is also considered that the improvement of classification efficiency by carbon black affected the mill performance.

Integrating of safety and health into the management process to suit the overall needs of a company will require commitment. Organisations which consistently perform to high success levels do so because they plan it that way. By using tools of total quality management, the potential to continually improve all safety processes exists. The successful integration of total quality measurement principles used in the improvement of safety processes, and the measurement of performance-based activities allow for prevention of accident causing scenarios and performance improvement.

The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

Improving the quality of the variogram helps to improve subsequent estimation and simulation processes. Two strategies for conditioning data prior to construction of the variogram are investigated using data from the Luce iron ore deposit in Canada. One strategy is the classic approach in which the deposit is subdivided into a set of structural domains. The domains are analysed individually and datapairs are recombined to produce a variogram. The second strategy is reconstruction of the deposit at an earlier stage of its history through unfolding. This involves transformation of the Cartesian coordinates into stratigraphic coordinate system. Improvement in the variogram quality, expressed in a decreased weighted deviation from a fitted model, is observed for both types of data conditioning. This indicates that, for the Luce deposit, application of data conditioning could also help to inform the selection of sampling locations.

As part of its operations Hamersley Iron operates a heavy medium Concentrator to upgrade low grade, unsaleable iron ore to produce saleable lump and fines products. Firstly, the attempts at delivering a blended feed in both chemical and physical characteristics are presented. Improvements in blending controls are shown to have given process performance improvements. Secondly, improvements to the feed preparation section are detailed. These alterations are providing a much cleaner feed to the subsequent processing stages.

This paper describes laboratory and in situ tests and determines a set of parameters for stiffness and strength properties for a weak sedimentary rock mass, the East Coast Bays Formation of Auckland. The parameters derived are discussed in relation to peak strength and in respect of deformation limits associated with sequential excavate and support (SEM) or conventional tunnelling.

A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. "Metal prices are central to a mineral investment decision and have a profound impact on the financial performance of companies in the mining industry. At its most basic level, metal prices are influenced by the disequilibrium between international metal volume supply and demand. That is, the commodity price is a regulator that equates international metal supply and demand where inventories act as a buffer between the emergence of this disequilibrium and its dissolution through a price change.From this viewpoint, mining companies are required to forecast metal and bulk commodity prices when evaluating minerals projects through discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. While supply-demand models are instructive, many companies use historical prices, spot prices, futures/forward pricing and consensus opinion (or a combination of all of these) to develop price forecasts.This paper discusses the definition, fundamentals and differences between futures/forward and consensus pricing and the appropriateness of each in a DCF model for mine project economic evaluation.Our results demonstrate that great care is required when using either futures/forward or consensus pricing and that the decision to use one rather than the other requires consideration of other important elements in the DCF model (ie the risk-adjusted discount rate).CITATION:Martinez Tipe, L A, McKibben, J and Barry, S, 2016. FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. Recent developments in engine, transmission and control technology, likely to give rise to improved performance and efficiency of underground mobile equipment, are reviewed. Turbocharging and the electronic control of fuel pumps and injectors can improve diesel engine performance whilst minimizing exhaust emissions. Ceramic materials promise further improvements in engine efficiency. Nevertheless, electrically powered machines, equipped with trailing cables or 'travelling plugs' are expected to find increasing application where there is less need for flexibility and where the cost of ventilation and heating or cooling makes diesel engines unattractive. Voltage to frequency converters and induction motors appear to have a future in mains powered machines. Vehicles employing energy storage in the form of batteries or flywheels will find increasing application, but it is expected that they will remain a minority until there is a significant break-through in battery technology. Hydrostatic transmissions having high power density and efficiency are likely to be used more widely. Electronic control systems are likely to be used to simplify jobs and to improve performance and productivity. Enhancement of remote control systems is to be expected for work in unsafe areas, but true robot operation is considered unlikely for the moment. Attention to ergonomic factors should produce significant productivity gains.

"Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The fast rate of development in the micro technology industry is enabling computer based systems to be used in ways never considered before. Micro technology can be used to great advantage in the mining industry to improve both safety and productivity. The planned use of electronic 'IN/OUT' boards at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) mines will provide a much improved system for checking that the mines are clear before firing. The provision of remote ocaputerised core logging facilities made possible by small remote data entry terminals will greatly improve the productivity of the personnel involved in all stages of core Logging.

The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. The methodology (i.e. procedures) used in testwork for modifying, improving, selecting, designing or developing processes is reviewed and possible improvements described. Minerals and particles could be characterised more comprehensively with modifications of existing procedures. Identification of the dominant phenomenon in a process could help bring the results of laboratory tests closer to plant performance. Improvements in pilot plant testwork could reduce the frequency and magnitude of problems in materials handling and separation in production processes, and increase the quantity and quality of the data obtained from a limited number of tests. Longer-term improvements in methodology depend on some changes in basic research. Information is required about all of the phenomena that occur in a production process rather than sophisticated models of specific phenomena. Theories, correlations and computer simulations could be used more effectively in testwork if they were simple, capable of forecasting the effects of changes and applicable to a number of similar processes.

Drill and blast (D&B) is one of the most important production operations in open pit mining. The resulting fragmentation of the D&B reflects in the downstream unit operation. Good fragmentation of the ore will minimise the cost of loading, hauling and crushing. The understanding of the geological model integrated with a software system for bench face surveying and planning of blast layouts based on three-dimensional images can help to achieve the fragmentation goals of the mine operation. A case study integrating these tools was carried out in a large iron mine in Brazil. The iron ore in the study area consists of hard and friable itabirites. More than three different ore types may occur on the same bench. Under these conditions, data integration becomes necessary to improve the results of blasting. A blasting plan was based on the generated geological model. The methodology helps understanding the factors that can interfere in the fragmentation process, allowing defining actions that can improve the blast design in those places that fragmentation wasn’t achieved. This condition is important for a continuous improvement of the drilling and blasting operation. The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

In Australia, coal mines have generally not adopted filling to increase mining recovery. The aim of this project, entitled æImproved recovery in highwall mining using backfillÆ, was to examine the feasibility of using fill to improve recovery in highwall mining. Current fill practice was reviewed for metalliferous as well as coal mining, both here in Australia and overseas, for its applicability to highwall mining. Studies were then made at a conceptual level to determine whether fill could be economically used, to determine appropriate sources for fill and to trial key aspects of fill behaviour. A review of filling methods led to conceptual studies being undertaken on seven filling methods and these studies demonstrated that fill could be used to improve recovery. These studies were then further refined. Selected filling materials have been reviewed and laboratory tests have been made on these to assess their suitability.

The objectives of this paper are to introduce the International Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works and to illustrate to the participants of the 13th Australian Tunnelling Conference 2008 how the insurance industry would like to see the future of tunnelling insurance. Tunnel construction projects have suffered large losses over the years as can be shown from various loss examples and a list of major losses over the last ten to 15 years. Since the consequences of insufficient risk control had to be borne by insurers, these losses have heightened the need for improved and adequate risk management measures so that insurance cover can also in future be provided for this hazardous industry sector. Observations are made as regards to the prevailing trends in the tunnelling industry, which contribute to the increase in risk and have adverse consequences for the insurance industry. To find a solution to this dilemma various options are examined with the suggestion of a Joint Code of Practice for Tunnel Works being agreed by all stakeholders, which would become essential to secure future insurance protection for such project work. The British Tunnelling Society has, in cooperation with the Association of British Insurers, developed such a code, which the International Tunnelling Insurance Group has now adopted for global application in international markets. The content and concept of this code is explained to establish a framework of understanding and applied risk management principles for tunnel works. This initiative also has the support of the International Tunnelling Association and the International Association of Engineering Insurers. The international application of this new code is demonstrated with a few examples, which also includes Australian projects. It is the aim that this code forms in future part of the insurance coverage for tunnelling works in order to put this risk segment on a more sustainable basis. For that reason the insurance industry is seeking the support of all stakeholders of tunnelling construction projects.

A low grade, refractory ore gold mine with high striping ratio such as at Macraes is always challenged in ways to improve margins. Common practice approaches used at OceanaGold Ltd Macraes are to maximise grade delivery, optimise recovery and reduce unit costs, as well as take any opportunities to incorporate new technologies and implement enhanced commercial strategies.   The Business Improvement (BI) programme was implemented across the Macraes operations in late 2003 and is being rolled-out to all other parts of the business. The core focus of BI at OGL is to: +        increase revenue, +        reduce cost, and +        improve processes.   A dedicated BI team comprising of a manager, team leaders and business analysts were engaged to identify and manage a series of opportunities to reduce operating expenses, optimise capital outlays and generate extra revenue. The Business Improvement Programme, though in its formative phase, has begun a cultural change within the organisation. Many people are starting to challenge the way they do things and are looking for ways to continually improve business performance.   The BI team encompasses individuals from different departments who can offer the diverse skill set necessary to produce intended results. The current team is made up of a BI manager, BI Team Leaders in Mining and Processing and analysts from Mining, Processing, Commercial and Plant Maintenance workgroups. A team member has recently been formally trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt. ] The BIÆs team role is to assist in the establishment of project management processes for each improvement idea. In addition the team will assist in tracking implementation, identifying and unblocking restrictions and limitations as well as setting up metrics to quantify the level of benefit returned and sustained.   From a more strategic point of view, the BI team is advancing the Business Improvement capability of the company by developing long term Communication and Training strategies. These strategies will set the direction of BI initiatives in the years to come to: +        educate the OGL workforce in basic BI techniques, +        assist the OGL workforce in applying basic BI techniques, +        communication the direction of BI in OGL, and +        close the information feedback loop to facilitate transparent communication between the OGL workforce and the BI team.

Coal mining has been occurring on the Stockton Plateau for over 100 years. As a result of both natural conditions and mining activities, surface water on the plateau is known to have low pH and elevated metals concentrations, a condition known as acid rock drainage (ARD). Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ), as owners of the current mining operations at Stockton desire to understand the nature and causes of ARD at Stockton to determine whether commercially viable options can be developed to improve the water quality to levels acceptable to the local community and regulators. A series of integrated water quality investigations have been performed towards developing a characterisation of the water quality on the Stockton Plateau and receiving waters. The investigations performed include: design and implementation of a water quality monitoring program to collect a satisfactory base of water quality data from which to develop an understanding of the water quality and its variability, and to collect data regarding the range of flow rates that occur in the principal streams; development of a hydrological model for the Plateau with the ability to predict flow rates at key locations on the plateau and on the Ngakawau River; field investigations of the bio-diversity of the plateau and surrounding areas, to develop a snapshot of the health of aquatic communities and whether streams draining mine workings are æadversely impactedÆ; eco-toxicology; waste dump seepage water quality monitoring at selected basal springs, drilling, investigations and permeability and geochemical testing; data processing of a range of historical data and the newly acquired data for the development of empirical relationships that describe the water chemistry system and its relationship in turn to flow rates in the streams; simulation of the long term water quality record for the measured parameters (pH, acidity and metals concentrations), based on the hydrological model and the empirical relationships developed from the new database; and preliminary development and examination of mitigation options for the ARD issues at the mine. The study has progressed towards design of pilot studies of options for mitigation of the generation of the ARD as well as treatment of the discharges. It is the integrated approach adopted by SENZ from an early time in the investigations, that has enabled fast-tracking of the pilot engineering trials. This paper presents the results of the field investigations and eco-toxicology studies and demonstrates the value of predictive modelling of water quality in the study area, even at a very early stage in the remedial engineering design process.
