"THE PRACTISING MINING ENGINEER has little time for the expression of opinion on abstract questions concerning the definition and future of mining engineering. The following comments indicate some of the thoughts and suggestions of those who have found mining engineering a very satisfying field of endeavour. The future of mining engineering has been under discussion for perhaps twenty years. It is significant that the University of Saskatchewan program was in- 88 traduced at the time that some traditional mining schools were questioning the need for mining engineers. One Canadian university, and some American schools, actually abandoned the field at this time, some ten years ago.Five years ago, Mining Magazine sponsored an international debate on training for the future, and concurrently, the CIM undertook a major survey of the mineral industry's manpower needs. The current CIM discussions should prove more fruitful, as they are directed toward mining engineering alone, rather than the broad, and confusing, spectrum of all professionals and semi-professionals of the mineral industry."

The Noranda concentrator was placed in operation in October, 1928, and the object of this paper is to outline operations during the twelve months which have elapsed since that time. The ores milled are massive sulphides carrying copper and gold, and, in certain cases, zinc. These ores have a specific gravity of about 3.8. The average assay of the copper-gold ore so far treated has been 2.0 - 3.5 percent Cu; 0.10 - 0.20 oz. Au; 40 - 51 percent Fe; and 6 - 15 percent SiO2. In this ore the copper occurs almost entirely as chalcopyrite, and the iron which is not combined with the copper is present mainly as pyrite and pyrrhotite. ?some iron is also combined with the silica, the ratio being about 1 to 4, and a small percentage is present as magnetite. The occurrence of the gold has been shown by microscopic work carried out by Prof. L. C. Graton, of Harvard University, to be very variable. Some of it is free, and is included within the base-metal sulphides or occurs at their boundaries. A similar distribution also holds for a portion of the gold which is combined as a telluride. Little is so far known of the occurrence of the silver other than that some of it may be combined with the gold in the telluride, petzite. The copper-zinc ore contains up to 6 percent copper, and has a very variable zinc content. The copper in such ore is present as chalcopyrite, and the zinc as sphalerite. In starting the mill we had three conditions to face; the first of these was climatic, the second was the lack of skilled flotation operators, and the third was the ore itself." The last of these three proved much more difficult to contend with than the other two combined.

Although doubt has been expressed many times as to who first brought self-contained breathing apparatus to this side of the Atlantic, there is none whatever that the first organized station was established at Glace Bay, N .S., by the Dominion Coal Company, in 1907. This station was started with 20 sets of 1907 "Draeger" apparatus and all necessary station equipment and supplies. After the fire at No. 1 pit, Sydney Mines, in 1908, the Nova Scotia Steel Company installed 15 sets of "Draeger" and sup-plies, which were housed in a rescue car (a converted pull-man.) In 1909 or '10 a fire occurred at the Back Pit, Stellarton, where the apparatus from Glace Bay was used, and subsequently the Acadia Company erected a station and in-stalled 10 sets of "Securitas" apparatus. In 1912 the station at New Waterford was opened and equipped with "Draeger," and the same year the station at Springhill was built and equipped with the same type. Sometime during past years the Nova Scotia Steel Company acquired a couple of "Proto" machines, and after the explosion at the Allan shaft in 1918 the Acadia Coal Company added some "Gibbs" to their station. From this it will be seen that when the coal-fields were organized under the British Empire Steel Corporation the equipment was rather mixed, therefore steps were taken by the executive to stanardize the whole of the rescue and recovery work.

Successful relationships between mining companies and local stakeholders are now an essential part of the social contract of “doing business” (Prescott, 1995). The methodology presented in this paper is designed to assist mining companies in understanding and building relationships with diverse stakeholder groups. The methodology starts by recognizing that mining projects have a natural life cycle which can be used to identify when new external affairs strategies are required. In designing an external affairs strategy, the first step is to set objectives that are compatible with the overall objectives of the mining project. The management team then identifies the main stakeholder groups and seeks to understand the priorities and inter-relationships of the individual stakeholders. The result of this stakeholder analysis is an understanding of the Degrees of Influence of each of the stakeholder groups along with a relationship map which illustrates the strong interactions between stakeholders. The company is then prepared to take a proactive approach to building relationships with the primary stakeholders. This methodology was developed by BHP to assist with the federal government environmental approval process for the development of Canada’s first diamond mine. BHP has successfully used the methodology in three different phases of the NWT Diamonds Project and is now applying the methodology to mining and development projects around the world.

"DEVELOPMENT of oil emulsion mud dates back to the early days of rotary drilling when oil was added to the drilling mud solely for the purpose of freeing stuck drill pipe. After the drill pipe was freed, and drilling resumed, this oil was considered a contaminant. Efforts were made to remove the oil but some of it remained and was emulsified with the drilling mud, thus forming a mechanical emulsion.During the late 1930's, operators found that adding crude oil to drilling muds seemed to alleviate 'sticky-hole' problems and so oil was allowed to remain in the mud. This practice was adopted when it was found that faster drilling rates and longer bit life were obtained. These observations led to the development of emulsion drilling muds. During the past five years their application has become more widespread because of the lower fluid losses obtained, greater lubrication qualities, faster penetration rates, and generally better hole conditions.An emulsion may be defined as a two-phase system consisting of a mixture of either finely divided oil droplets in water or of finely divided water droplets in oil. The surrounding liquid is known as the continuous phase. The emulsifiers reduce the interfacial tension, making the droplets tend to repel each other so that they remain dispersed and stabilized. These emulsions are classified as oil-in-water or as water-in-oil, depending upon whether water or oil, respectively, is the continuous phase. Briefly, close inspection shows that they consist essentially of globules of• the one liquid suspended in a continuous mass of the other liquid. Oil emulsion muds are usually of the oil-in-water type. Two basic types of emulsifiers •commonly used in Canadian muds are soaps and lignites."

In this paper the relative merits of shot peening, induction surface hardening, spiral-rolling, and the combination of these surface treatments, are evaluated on the basis of their capacity to increase the fatigue strength of drill steel. The S-N relations for plain car-bon steel (SAE 1080) and Ni-Cr-Mo drill steels in the as-rolled condition were determined previously, using the new Canadian method of testing drill steel introduced at the annual meeting of the Institute in Toronto in 1950 (19). S-N curves have now been determined by this method for these two drill steels in the following conditions: shot-peened and drawn, induction hardened, induction hardened and shot-peened, and spiral-rolled. ( S.R.) . The ratios of the fatigue strengths of these steels after surface treatment, to their fatigue strengths in the as-rolled condition, are compared and the most beneficial treatments are thereby pointed out. The expected range of stresses and their distribution during actual drilling operations are estimated from data available, and the mechanism of failure of drill steel in the as-rolled and surface-treated conditions is analyzed. The magnitude of the surface compression stresses and their effect on ?fatigue strength are discussed.

"Block caving is the preferred underground mining method to profitably extract massive, low-grade orebodies; however, lack of cave access inhibits understanding the rockmass response to mining, which is needed for safer, more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualization (VRSV) is an alternative method for understanding complex cave behaviour, by providing virtual access to the cave. A customized VRSV module was developed at UNSW Australia to investigate rockmass response to undercut developments at a case-study block caving operation. Time/sequence effects are investigated in rockmass response to blasting, which is an important factor in hard-rock mines.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’extraction souterraine par blocs foudroyés est la méthode préférentielle pour extraire rentablement des gisements massifs à faible teneur. Toutefois, le manque d’accès à la chambre restreint la compréhension de la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’exploitation, ce qui est nécessaire pour obtenir des opérations plus sécuritaires et plus productives. La combinaison de grands ensembles de données de multiples sources avec la visualisation scientifique par réalité virtuelle (VRSV) constitue un autre moyen de comprendre le comportement complexe de la chambre en fournissant un accès virtuel à la chambre. ABSTRACT: Surface mining operations must manage variability from within their operations as well as variability imposed upon them by external forces. A framework to manage both internal and external variability through the continuous review and adjustment of a mine plan during active mining lifetime operation is introduced, to minimize lost production and maintain operational safety. The observational approach of “observe, evaluate, interpret, predict, and adapt” is employed as the backbone of this approach. Although written with a surface mining operation in mind, the framework outlined in this paper would be equally applicable to any mining or processing operation.

THE solid fuel industry, especially that branch represented by bituminous coal, is gradually becoming aware of its ? paramount importance in a world where there is an ever increasing demand for the products of a mechanical age. In practically every process of manufacture, the necessity for energy in some form is being multiplied. Some of that prime energy is derived from water power-hydro-electric schemes, flood control schemes, etc. - but often the electrical energy thus developed is generated at great distances from the load centres, requiring long transmission lines with consequent transformer and transmission losses. A few plants have harnessed the tidal power of the seas and one has harnessed the energy of the wind in a modern manner. All of these schemes are dependent on certain natural geographical, hydrographical, and physical advantages of terrain, as well as an adequate area of consumption of the energy developed. If flood control is the primary object, then power generation is a by-product; and the economics of large capital expenditure on power generating equipment must be considered in that light.

Communities are the foundation upon which the whole structure of society rests and upon which the nation builds its hope for the future. They are not established to serve any one particular generation, nor any one element or group, but should be erected to render a lasting service to all who are to follow. They play a very vital and important role in the lives and welfare of the people, in their industrial, business, and social relations, and in the economy of the nation, of which they are the fundamental assets. Communities and civic governments are destined to be vital factors in the national welfare in the days that are to come. Any improvement in national or world conditions must have its origin within the communities. Any attempt at solution of the community problem must give some consideration to the fundamental elements which exist in every community, and to the underlying principles, and ways of life and thought, upon which community life is based. The community is, in its essence, a number of people living and working more or less closely together, sharing common rights, privileges, conveniences, and comforts, which would be impossible for the individual to obtain for himself by his own efforts alone, or in any other way than by the mutual exchange of persona! services and resources. In this way, men have increased the returns from their labour and commerce, have raised the standard of their living, with better social, educational, and recreational facilities, and enjoy a greater personal security.

Brazilian sulphide ores can contain a significant content of chloride and fluoride, which are harmful to bacteria and thus bioleaching. This work summarizes a four-year research investigation on the effect of fluoride on both bacterial growth and sulphide bioleaching, supported by studies carried out with secondary copper ores. Firstly, the influence of fluoride on the kinetics of ferrous iron bio-oxidation with Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans was addressed. Values as low as 10.0 mg/L F- fully inhibited bacterial growth, although fluoride toxicity could be overcome by the presence of aluminium, which reduced the concentration of hydrofluoric acid through the formation of aluminium-fluoride complexes. This required at least a 2:1 aluminium/fluoride molar ratio, which ensured bacterial growth rate values similar to that observed in the absence of fluoride ions. Subsequently, both batch and column bioleaching with mesofiles (30 ºC), moderate thermofile (50 ºC) or hyperthermophiles (67.5 ºC) of two secondary copper ore samples were analyzed with focus on the relevant effects of fluoride-containing minerals on the bioleaching of such sulphide ores.

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. "THE FIRST COMMENTATOR that I will call on is Mr. W. G. (Bill) Brissenden, Vice-President, Mines, Noranda Mines Ltd. Bill, would you care to comment.W. G. BRISSENDEN ...Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I spent some time reading the four papers that were presented here, yesterday evening, and decided that the four to six minutes that I had been allotted for this afternoon were going to be pretty tough to meet. It's a very big subject and I just hope that I will be able to stay within my time limit. As has been so aptly demonstrated by the members of our panel here this afternoon young men in growing numbers continue to be attracted to careers in the mineral industry, especially to careers in mining engineering. Now from 80 the point of view that the profession may have regained its status this is indeed welcome news. However, perhaps all of the members seem to have the suspicion that the number of mining engineers that the industry can absorb is a much lower figure than previously forecast. It is said that technical school graduates are now occupying some of the jobs once considered the private preserve of the mining engineer and also that mining engineering undergraduates are having trouble locating summer employment. If these interpretations of mine are correct then we are now confronted not only with our old dilemma - whither the mining engineer - but also with an urgent need to solve it. We cannot allow our profession to become once again an undesirable one in the eyes of our youth because if we permit such a thing to happen a second time the profession may never recover."

In this paper, the author offers a personal view of what the next 30 years holds for mineral processing. Restating that mineral processing will remain a vibrant industry in raw material production, growth opportunities in waste management are identified. The processing sequence familiar now (mining ?mineral processing ?extraction) will become more interwoven. In situ processing (i.e., milling underground) will evolve from concept to demonstration. Opportunities to exploit physical properties altered in chemical (pyro- and hydro-) processing will present themselves. In primary grinding, the path to AG/SAG milling will progress with little deviation but opportunities in regrinding are wide open. Flotation will see the trend to designing bubble/particle reactors accelerate simultaneously with a vigorous response from mechanical cell suppliers. Gravity separation remains a bastion of the lone inventor but this author anticipates that the new lines will come from the waste management business. Total station has been predominantly applied in stationary survey scenarios in construction. With the moving target tracking and point survey automation functions, a robotic total station (RTS) lends itself well to more dynamic applications. Nevertheless, a RTS unit is still unable to track multiple targets simultaneously or to survey a target point when the line-of-sight is temporarily unavailable. In this paper, we propose a methodology to synchronize and automate multiple RTS units intended to address dynamic tracking and surveying applications in the construction field. By using the application programming interface (API) from the manufacturer, we implement the proposed methodology and the prototype system integrates two RTS units in regard to space and time and communicates survey command instructions among RTS units through wireless networks. The two RTS units can be operated to survey the two ends of one swinging sling concurrently in order to retrieve the actual length of the sling within several millimeters accuracy. Besides, in applications where line-of-sight between a target object and one RTS unit cannot be guaranteed all the time, continuous surveying can be materialized by automatically delegating the task to another synchronized RTS unit with clear view of the target object. A field test was conducted to demonstrate the application of the proposed automation approach in which sling length was measured of a rigging framework used for lifting industrial modules. The testing results are presented and achievable accuracy and reliability are discussed. The proposed solution overcomes the limitations of global positioning system (GPS) and laser scanning and holds high potential to provide cost effective solutions to many dynamic field applications.

Integrating seismic reflection, borehole geophysical, and physical rock property studies is an effective means of mapping lithological contacts and structures in the crystalline crust. At Les Mines Selbaie in the northern volcanic zone of the Late Archean Abitibi Subprovince, a high-frequency seismic reflection profile has provided the first images of deep crustal structures of this important polymetallic mine site. Physical rock property and borehole geophysical studies confirm that prominent seismic reflections can be caused by lithological contacts, faults and sulphide mineralization. At Les Mines Selbaie, the first two of these are shown by this study. Clearly identifiable reflection images from sulphide mineralization have not been demonstrated in analysis of the profile. The seismic images provide useful information about gross structure in the vicinity of Les Mines Selbaie. They can also place important constraints on the sequence of tectonic events and, therefore, can aid future deep exploration programs.

"Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. It is generally recognized that the interpretation of bedrock geochemical data in volcanic terrains can be improved by adjusting for rock-type. Various chemical attributes of volcanic rocks have been put forward in the literature as rapid indicators of rock-type, but there is some question as to which of these is the most reliable . Only one such attribute, total iron, seems to have seen systematic use in geochemical mapping in the Flin Flon region. Discriminant analysis of 500 basalts, andesites, dacites and rhyolites suggests that SiO2 is the most important rock-discriminating variable and that MgO, CaO, TiD2, AI2O3 and FeOtot, are successively poorer discriminators. Lithological normalization in the subalkaline volcanic environment should therefore be made over ranges of this variable. Trace-metal data from drill core through the sulphide orebody at Hanson Lake, Saskatchewan are used to demonstrate various approaches to lithological correction, including silica normalization, factor analysis and trend analysis. All of these extract economically important information from the core that is not apparent in the raw data logs. However, silica normalization does not seem to be subject to as many serious limitations as factor and trend analysis in this case, and therefore seems to provide the most reliable basis for the interpretation of subsurface exploration geochemical data.

The burning sulphide ores in the Sullivan Mine generate sulphur dioxide gases. This paper is concerned with a description of the environmental impact of SO2 on air quality in the mine and on the surface in the vicinity of the mine. As a result of surface caving, SO2 has been able to vent to surface and winds have carried it into one residential area of Kimberley. Monitoring practices are described.

The McClean Lake mill is located approximately 850 kilometers north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and is operated by Orano Canada Inc. (Orano). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and in 2014 completed a multiyear expansion to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum. This expansion included significant changes to the mill’s secondary leach circuit in support of safely processing high grade ore directly from the Cigar Lake mine. In particular, inter-stage pumps were introduced for slurry transfer between the secondary leach tanks, replacing the original pressure feed forward operation. The design and selection process for these pumps was strongly influenced by the uncertainty related to actual radiation dose exposure when processing undiluted high grade ore (up to 30%U), and consequently the desire to maintain minimal occupancy in the vault enclosure containing the secondary leach tanks. These constraints resulted in the decision to install positive displacement pumps above the leach tanks in a suction-lift configuration. Operating experience with this design has shown that the pump capacity is significantly de-rated due to process solution gas-entrainment and pipe scale build-up, particularly in the front end of the secondary leach circuit where reagent dosage is high. Experience processing high grade ore also provided accurate radiation dose data to demonstrate that the level of occupancy in the leaching vault enclosure could be re-evaluated to accommodate alternate pump configurations. This paper reviews the lessons learned and improvements made to safely increase the capacity and reliability of the leach inter-stage pump system.
