"IntroductionDevelopments in the preparation, hydraulic transportation and placement of classified mill tailing as an effective backfill and support for mining excavations, have made feasible several advancements in mining methods that are safer and more economical. Hydraulic backfill systems have played an integral part in the development of more efficient cut-and-fill and blasthole stoping.The hydraulic transportation of tailing fill has made possible the elimination of expensive and laborious transportation, placement and spreading of gravel type fills. Also, in cut-andfill stopes, the use of hydraulically placed consolidated fill has largely eliminated the need to use extensive timbering for floors and supports, previously necessary when only gravel type, waste rock or unconsolidated tailing fill was used .Another important advantage of using mill tailing as backfill is that it decreases the need to contain a large portion of the mill solids waste in a surface disposal area and thus reduces environmental and ecological problems.Tailing Fill PropertiesConsolidated tailing fill consists of deslimed mill tailing and Portland cement. These two materials are mixed together in various proportions to form a high density slurry which is transferred underground by gravity through boreholes and pipelines. After placement underground, the water is drained off and the mixture is allowed to set. The strength of the consolidated fill is dependent on the cement content, particle size distribution and curing time. A typical tailing/ cement ratio used for bulk filling in stopes requiring vertical wall support is 30:1. Ratios ranging from 8:1 to 5: 1 are used for stope floors. High pulp densities minimize segregation and loss of cement during placement as well as reduce the amount of drainage water to be handled."

Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

This Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties (the “CIMVAL Code”) is the result of a review more than a decade after the release in 2003 of the “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” (the "2003 Standards"). The purpose of the review is to update the 2003 Standards to reflect domestic valuation, international valuation, and regulatory developments. The CIMVAL Code was adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (the "CIM") Council on November 29, 2019. The CIMVAL Code supersedes the 2003 Standards. The 2003 Standards were dated February 2003 and were adopted by the CIM Council on March 9, 2003 as the first comprehensive set of standards for Valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The 2003 Standards followed recommendations of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission, where in its Final Report (January 1999), the CIM was specifically asked to form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on standards for the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties ("CIMVAL") was created on May 5, 1999 with the mandate to recommend standards and guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general. The CIMVAL Code is limited to the Valuation of Mineral Properties (including any interests therein) and does not cover valuation of corporations or other entities that hold Mineral Properties as assets. The CIMVAL Code does not cover petroleum and related assets. CIMVAL recommends that the CIMVAL Code be followed for all Valuations of Mineral Properties, including those required by securities administrators and stock exchanges. However, when a Valuation is required under the applicable rules of securities administrators or stock exchanges, such rules prevail to the extent of any inconsistency.

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant?s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today?s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user?s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project?s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

Sixteen miners died tragically at the Paymaster gold mine at Timmins, Ontario in February, 1945, when a badly corroded hoist rope broke. The investigation of the Royal Commission that followed arrived at a number of recommendations (Investigations, 1947) aimed at avoiding future disasters of this kind. One consequence was the development, and legislated use in Canada, several decades ago, of powerful electromagnetic (EM) instruments for the nondestructive testing of mine shaft wire ropes. The authors have been involved for many years in the design, production, and testing of EM instruments (Geller and Udd, 1990 and 1992, Geller and Kitzinger, 1991, Geller et al., 1993). Since the mid-1990s particular attention was paid to the design and operational results obtained from the computer- controlled portable MagnographJ II wire rope tester (Geller et al., 1995 and 1998). In the present article the authors summarize further hardware- and software-related developments of this instrument. Further, an account is given of the results obtained from the most recent design known as the PermaScanJ testing system. This is also a computerized dual-function system. In it, however, the sensor head is designed primarily, if not solely, for permanent installation and for remotely controlled operation. This represents a basic departure from traditional designs, which were intended for ad hoc temporary installations. The remotecontrolled instrument described in this paper has now been in operational use for more than 4 years.

Cost management in the conditions of increasing competition and unforeseen market turbulence constitutes one of the key areas of the enterprise?s activity. In the last two years the demand for hard coal on the domestic and global market of non-renewable resources has increased significantly. Polish hard coal mining industry, as an industry in the stage of decline, received a chance for rejuvenation. However, one of the most significant conditions of seizing this opportunity is the rationalization of mining costs and improvement of production effectiveness. Due to the significance of this issue, the main objective of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the production effectiveness in the hard coal mining industry. In order to meet such an objective, in the first part of the paper we measured effectiveness in the Polish hard coal mines in years 2006- 2011. The research encompassed three out of five mining enterprises operating in the country. Then based on the received results, guidelines concerning the improvement of effectiveness of production were created, taking into consideration infrastructural, technical, economic and organizational determinants. Furthermore, opportunities and threats for improving the production effectiveness, stemming from the external conditions have also been indicated.

"A discussion of the design, challenges and successes associated with the commissioning of the gravity recovery circuit at Canada’s newest open pit gold mine - Atlantic Gold’s Moose River Consolidated Project in Nova Scotia, Canada is presented. An overview of the project, its historical significance and overall flowsheet is provided with special focus given to the design and selection of the gravity circuit equipment including the scalping screen, gravity concentrators and the novel intensive leaching technology selected for the project. The performance of the gravity circuit is benchmarked against the feasibility study process design specifications and the outcomes are discussed. Challenges encountered during commissioning are also presented, including the use of third-party automation and the effects of screen sizing on overall gravity circuit performance. Mechanical modifications made to the Sepro Leach Reactor for the Moose River project are also discussed. A detailed technical review of the mechanical and operational aspects of the Sepro Leach Reactor is provided with key operational data on leach times, recoveries, reagent usage, solid-liquid separation, pregnant solution quality and its influence on bullion purity.INTRODUCTION Atlantic Gold Corporation’s Moose River Touquoy Mill in Nova Scotia, Canada was commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2017 with commercial production declared in March of 2018. The 2 Mtpa process plant uses a conventional, gravity-CIL process. This site was previously mined in the 1870s. Interest waned in the early 1900s but resumed in the 1930s and the mine was brought back into production in 1935 until an underground mine collapse in 1936. This mining district became famous after CRBC radio commenced a ground breaking, around the clock, broadcast of the rescue operations. Over 100 million people listened to the broadcast from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. These broadcasts changed radio, transforming it from a medium for music to on the spot, breaking news reporting. The mill was constructed by Ausenco on a fixed price EPC contract in the historic Moose River gold mining district, 95 km north-east of Halifax by road. The mill will process ore from the adjacent Touquoy pit for the first 5+ years of operation; after the Touquoy reserves are exhausted, the mill will process ore trucked 37 km from the Beaver Dam deposit for an additional 5 years."

This paper describes a rock drill bit which, although conventional in the processes of manufacture and use on the job, has incorporated into the outer wall or periphery of the insert, where wear is always the greatest, a variable amount of extra metal, distributed in units of height of insert to withstand this excessive wear. "Continuous thickening by an operation called sedimentation is the separation of suspended solid particles from a liquid stream by gravity settling. The primary purpose of thickening is to increase the solids concentration of the feed stream. High rate thickeners are designed specifically to maximise the flocculation efficiency. A detailed investigation has been carried out to understand the influence of ore type and operating parameters such as bed level, bed mass, rake arm torque and flocculent concentration on thickening operation. Tata steel’s Noamundi plant data shows that variation in ore type, and operating parameters are major contributors to fluctuation in thickener performance. A lot of research has been done earlier on thickening operation but effect of ore type and operating variables by using plant data was never touched before.In this context, the performance of thickener was evaluated by daily data to study the influence of ore type and operating variables on thickener operation. Investigation shows that friable ore % in feed mix is proportional to slime density because friable ore is porous & brittle in nature. As a result, friable ore generates more fines/ultrafine during communition process in wash plant. Increase in flocculant concentration and bed mass is showing a positive change on high rate thickener performance Investigation shows that optimum bed mass and flocculant concentration is required to achieve desired pulp density in thickener underflow at different feed pulp density (g/cc).INTRODUCTIONOver the years, Iron Ore Beneficiation at Tata Steel, Noamundi has seen varied changes. Depletion of high grade iron and with increasing iron ore throughputs coupled with lowering of the hard ore a subsequent increase in slime generation, slime management and clear water requirement for wet Plant has thrown up myriad challenges. To overcome these challenges, many improvements initiatives were taken by Tata Steel in last decade. One of the major changes is the recent High Rate Thickener commissioning at Tata Steel Noamundi to cater the high iron ore throughput requirement. Slime reporting to Thickener has increased from 1.4 MTPA 2.5 MTPA over the last few decades. The above changes further aggravate the poor settling and dewatering characteristics of the slurry which is being feed to HRT. Considering the above mentioned constraints and stringent environmental implication proper water management has become a major challenge to reckon with. The thickener is used to increase the concentration of the suspension by sedimentation, accompanied by the formation of a clear liquid. In most cases the concentration of the suspension is high and hindered settling takes place."

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. In the present work, the effect of pH, non-ionic polyacrylamide flocculant and anionic polyphosphate on rheology and settling behaviour of colloidal TiO2 suspensions (15 ? 50 wt% solid) is investigated. Maximum particle aggregation, reflecting in the highest suspension settling rate and maximum shear yield stress was achieved at pH 7.2, the isoelectric point (iep), consistent with DLVO expectation. However, the maximum aggregation condition at the iep also resulted in the poorest suspension consolidation behaviour. Significantly enhanced consolidation was achieved for a more dispersed suspension at pH values away from the iep but at reduced settling rate. Thus, when pH alone is used to control conditions which facilitate strong interparticle attraction, a high settling behaviour which is not conducive to compact consolidation results. Improved suspension consolidation may be achieved at the iep via anionic polyphosphate addition which leads to attenuation of the strongly attractive van der Waals forces and emergence of "soft" repulsion due to weak inter-particle electro-steric forces. The weak repulsion act to lubricate particles involved in the hydrodynamic interactions which controls the compressibility of the sediment bed, allowing a compact consolidation of solids to be obtained. Alternatively, non-ionic polyacrylamide homo-polymer (Magnafloc 333) was fairly effective in flocculating titanium dioxide suspensions leading to high settling rate and acceptable pulp consolidation at the iep.

Sedimentation behaviour of siliceous mill tailings derived from a magnetite-chalcopyrite ore in fresh water, fresh water - sea water mixtures and full-salinity sea waters are compared. Results of batch settling tests are presented in the form of settling curves and solids flux curves. The addition of a few per cent of sea water markedly enhanced the zone sedimentation rate due to particle agglomeration caused by a reduction in zeta potential of the suspended solids. The presence of a small amount of residual, previously magnetized magnetite in the tailings also enhanced agglomeration and sedimentation. The significance of these results to submarine disposal of mill tailings is discussed.

We all know what needs to be accomplished, but struggle with how to do it, especially in an industry which has not always experienced management/union cooperation, and mistrust is still present.This paper describes a process to improve team work and employee involvement in Inco's nickel carbonyl refinery at Copper Cliff The process involves facilitatorship training for all employees, and a system for reinforcing and accomplishing the required behavioural change. The system is described in detail and a number of examples are presented. At the refinery, the staff is starting to understand as Max DePree recently wrote ""Without Quality Behaviour, you cannot have Quality Product"". IntroductionThe Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) is Inco's largest and most modern nickel refinery, which celebrated its twentieth year of successful operation in April 1993.The heart of the refinery is the Inco pressure carbonyl (IPq plant which produces high purity nickel pellets and specialty powders by refining an approximate 80% nickel granule feed. The carbonyl plant is a modem chemical plant with very special and demanding requirements for safety and environmental protection due to the toxic nature of the refining gas.Since 1987, there has been an emphasis at CCNR on a comprehensive Total Quality Improvement (TQI) Program which was designed based on recognizing customers' needs for improved systems for quality management. This program is customer oriented and comprises such elements as team organizational concepts, customer audits, process assessment and internal quality auditing.A detailed review of progress was made in early 1991 and it became apparent that the ""ownership"" of the TQI program was not broad based. In fact, the program was very much a staff driven effort and fell far short of total employee involvement and relentless continuous improvement that are now considered essential to remain competitive and stay in business.Inco staff has now come to regard that early phase of our TQI program as ""the technical aspects of total quality improvement"".The safety experience was also puzzling. Even though the safety statistics were good with an average lost time frequency of 1.6 for the last five years, the perfonnance improvement had plateaued and remained pretty much the same. Clearly a new approach was required if significant progress and continuous improvement was to be made."

Surface limitations and a need for more direct transportation routes require serious consideration be given to the development of underground construction works in geotechnically unfavourable conditions. Due to geographical and logistical limitations, the construction of these underground works is restricted to difficult ground conditions that require temporary pre-support before excavation in order to avoid tunnel collapse or severe surface settlement. One type of pre-support is the umbrella arch system, which has been gaining popularity due to cost and time commitment in comparison with other pre-support systems (e.g., ground freezing). The umbrella arch system has been employed with significant frequency around the world, yet without a complete understanding about the mechanical response of the system. As such, literature has found the temporary support system to be both under and over designed with regard to safety and/or economical impact. The authors of this paper have made three major contributions to increase understanding of the umbrella arch system and to help optimize the design process. Firstly, the authors have developed nomenclature in order to categorize and define umbrella arch elements and systems, which also stimulated the creation of the empirically driven Umbrella Arch Selection Chart. Secondly, the authors have established a design methodology that is primarily based on advanced numerical modelling techniques to aid in the optimized design of the umbrella arch arrangement for site specific conditions. Thirdly, the authors have developed a semi-analytical model for umbrella arch systems employed in squeezing ground conditions by incorporating elastic foundation theory as well as convergence confinement theory. These three major contributions to such a widely employed tunnelling pre-support system will be introduced and explained in detail, and will include discussion of how each is incorporated in the complete tunnel support design process and throughout the construction and monitoring phase of a project.

Zeta potentials and settling rates of an oil sands tailings sample taken from Syncrude Canada Ltd's Aurora Stacker Pilot Operation were studied. Two clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, were also studied since these are the major constituent minerals in the fine oil sands tailings. Process water, decanted water as well as distilled water were used. It was observed that the zeta potentials of the tailings solids showed maximum negative values in process water at pH 8-10, which coincides with the pH of commercial hot water bitumen extraction process. The settling rates of the tailings sample were very low, at 0.008 m/hr in decanted water and 0.04 m/hr in process water. The rates were increased to 1.0 m/hr in decanted water and 0.13 m/hr in process water at an addition of 50 g/t Ciba AF1235. Although the settling rate was higher the supernatant was cloudier in decanted water than in process water. Further increase in the dosages of Ciba AF1235 did not increase the settling rates in decanted water but gradually increased it in process water, reaching 0.46 m/hr at 100 g/t. The results indicated that lower concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2 (in decanted water) benefited settling rates but did not benefit supernatant clarity. Test results also indicated that Ciba AF1235 caused selective flocculation of the tailings sample, since the top sediments had higher illite and lower quartz contents than the bottom sediments.
