The objectives of the work described in this report are to determine the communications requirements and need for communications, both for voice and control, on longwalls, and to make recommendations for longwall communications equipment and systems. These recommendations are designed to guide the future development of longwall communications. Information necessary for the accomplishment of this work has been gathered by a series of visits to longwall mines and discussions with longwall mine operators, as well as with suppliers of longwall communications and mining equipment and with Bureau of Mines personnel. In addition, it has proven possible, through personal interviews and literature evaluation, to gain an understanding of the experience and attitudes towards longwall communications in countries where longwall mining is far more widespread than in the U.S., namely the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium.

The Bureau of Mines conducted small-scale batch and semicontinuous tests on the reduction of zinc sulfide with iron according to the reaction ZnS + Fe ? FeS + Zn to determine reaction kinetics in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,400° C and to investigate the potential use of a scrap iron reductant. Batch tests indicated that a temperature of at least 1,300° C with a 1:1 mole ratio of Fe to ZnS is needed for good zinc recovery. Semicontinuous tests were conducted, using four zinc concentrate samples, containing various percentages of copper, cadmium, and lead, which were reacted with iron and iron contaminated with iron oxide and tin in an externally heated graphite furnace. Analysis of the zinc metal and FeS matte reaction products showed cadmium to be entirely in the zinc metal, copper to be in the FeS matte, and lead to be about 60 pct in the zinc metal and 40 pct in the matte. Tin reported to the matte, and none was detected above the O.OS-pct level in the zinc. Sulfur dioxide was not detected in the offgas when up to 20 pct of the iron was replaced by Fe203.

This report describes the development and testing of a prototype tunneling machine. Principal efforts were aimed at testing of the fragmentation subsystem of a continuous drill and blast hard rock excavation machine suitable for use in underground mining and tunneling applications. The concept utilizes a unique self -shielding spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. A major accomplishement was the development of a remote controlled, loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry and a detonator are Simultaneously placed (pumped) into the blasthole via a loading hose. The special electric long-delay detonator is inductively ignited upon emplacement, and the machine remains at the face during the blast.

Examination of several coalbeds in Walker County, Ala., Cambria, Greene, and Fayette Counties, Pa., and Raleigh and Wyoming Counties, W. Va., indicates that cleat orientations are similar throughout a vertical sequence of strata. Studies of cleat orientation were carried out in underground mines that are operating in separate coalbeds vertically above one another. The data show that over a vertical separation of 100 to 400 feet, the average difference in coal cleat orientation between mines is 04° for the face and 08" for the butt cleat. Variations of coal cleat direction between coalbeds examined in strip-mined areas show similar values. Cleat orientations measured at outcrops agree well with the directions measured underground, suggesting that the amount of vertical separation between coalbeds has little effect on the resulting differences in cleat directions. The largest variation of cleat directions between adjacent coalbeds occurs where a large horizontal distance separates two sample locations. Cleat orientations for deeper coalbeds are most reliable where the data are taken from directly above.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

The western Mesabi range nonmagnetic taconites containing about 34 percent Fe were evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in a 900-pound-per-hour pilot plant employing a selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation technique. The flotation step was a reverse flotation process and involved the flotation of the gangue minerals. The objective of the research was to increase the availability of domestic raw materials for the iron and steel industry. The beneficiated ores yielded concentrates containing 62 to 64 percent Fe and less than 5.5 percent Si02 with accompanying iron recoveries that averaged about 75 percent. Comparable flotation results were obtained with either fresh or 80 to 90 percent reclaimed water. Recycled waters having turbidities as high as 5,000 ppm Si02 did not affect the flotation process. Reclaimed waters containing residual calcium contents of less than 10 ppm gave better flotation concentrates than those containing 15 ppm.

This report presents information on 77 waterflood projects in 31 Montana oilfields. The study shows the locations of the projects, the sources and amounts of injection water, and the results in oil produced. Waterflooding, a secondary recovery technique, began in Montana about 40 years after the initial oil discovery in 1920. Often, the difference between water disposal by injection and pressure maintenance operations is not clear. Water injected at the projects in 1973 was 157.7 million barrels. In 1973, the 31 fields having waterflood projects produced 28.3 million barrels of oil valued at $88.4 million. Both in volume and value, this represents over 80 percent of the State's 1973 oil output. The projects are making possible the recovery of additional oil, thus contributing to the conservation of oil and lessening the impact of the current oil shortage.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. As shown in Table 9, consumption has risen steadily for the period November through April, reaching its highest level since June of 1974. Imports remained at a relatively high level in spite of decreased imports from Zaire and Belgium-Luxembourg. Award prices for cobalt sold by the General Services Administration on June 17, 1976 ranged from $5.058 to $5.41211 per pound of contained cobalt. The high bid was about $1 per pound above the current market price set by the major sales agent in the U.S. for cobalt on April 15, 1976. COPPER: Eight domestic producers on July 1 hiked refined copper prices by 4¢ to 74¢ per pound for cathode and to 74.625¢ for electrolytic wirebar. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) June pricing of prompt contracted copper averaged 70.6¢, with daily quotes registering between 67¢ and 72.5¢ per pound. In June, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash wirebar prices averaged 70.3¢, trading between a low of 65.5¢ and a high of 73.6¢. End of the month copper stocks totaled 108,758 short tons for the COMEX and 539,350 metric tons for the LME.

The Bureau of Mines has developed probes to be used in emergency mine rescue operations by being lowered through a borehole drilled into an underground mine. Various probes can provide two-way voice communication with trapped miners, continuous mine atmosphere monitoring, temperature indication, and television searching capability. At present, an infrared imaging probe is being developed for "seeing" through coal smoke.

As part of an interegency agreement with the Energy Research end Development Administration to develop unproved refractory materials for use in coal gasification processes, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature to determine the effect of steam, H2, CO, and CH4 as well as the alkali metal oxides K2O and Na2O on refractory materials. Emphasis was given to the performance of high-alumina castable and fired refractories to conditions expected in coal gasification processes. Approximately 85 references were reviewed with 40 cited in the text. The literature was found to contain little data directly applicable to the selection of refractory lining materials suitable for use under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas compositions expected in second generation coal gasification reactors.

The Bureau of Mines designed and constructed a series of calibration models for geophysical borehole logging. A nominal hole diameter of 3 inches was selected as representative of typical core holes drilled for mining and engineering purposes, although additional hole diameters of 2, 5, and 8 inches are provided in one of the models for determination of empirical correction factors for variations in hole diameter. The physical properties of the models were determined by laboratory analyses of drill core samples and evaluated statistically for reliability. This report outlines the location of the models, elements of design and construction, and results of the laboratory tests. The models are available at the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo., for use by Government agencies and private industry to calibrate logging equipment for measurements of density, sonic velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity.

The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the Gibbs free energies of formation of chromous fluoride (CrF2), chromic fluoride (CrF3), and chromium (II,III) fluorides (CrF2.40 and CrF2.45) with high-temperature galvanic cells employing calcium fluoride doped with 1 mole-pct yttrium fluoride as the electrolyte. Free-energy changes were obtained from open-circuit potential measurements for the following cells: Cr, CrF2 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (a) NiO, NiF2 // CaF2 // CrF3 , Cr203 (b) CrF2 , CrF2.40 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (c) and CrF2 ?45 , CrF3 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (d) with the following overall reactions Cr(s) + NiF2 (s) = Ni(s) + CrF2 (s) (1) 3NiO(s) + 2CrF3 (s) = 3NiF2 (s) + Cr203 (s) (2) 5CrF2 (s) + NiF2 (s) = 5CrF2.4O (s) + Ni(s) (3) and 3.64CrF2.45 + NiF2 (s) = 3.64CrF3 (s) + Ni (s) . (4) These results were combined with the best available literature values of ?Gf° of NiF2, NiO, and Cr203 to deduce Gibbs free energies of formation for the chromium fluorides expressed as follows: ?Gf°(CrF2) = -179.31 + 24.33 X 10-3T ± 0.43 kcal-mole. Miners, like everyone else, must be able to see well in order to work well. But simply hauling bigger and brighter lights into the mines does not necessarily produce better mine illumination. This chapter tells why. Increasing the power of the light source can create problems of portability, glare, adaptation and contrast. This chapter also discusses some ways to increase illumination by Improving the reflectability of walls, roofs and other exposed surfaces. In Chapter IV you learned that the "brightness" of a room or work area was really a matter of how much light was reflected from the walls, roof, and other surfaces. Therefore, if you want to Improve visibility you should increase the amount of reflected illumination. O HOW DOES ONE DO THAT? One way of Increasing reflected illumination would be to increase the power of the light source.

Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

The Bureau of Mines has improved a mine dust incombustibles analyzer originally developed at the Bartlesville Energy Research Center (BERC). This analyzer provides quick, accurate analysis of the percentage of incombustible material present in dust samples taken from mine ribs, roof, and floor so that costly overdusting may be eliminated while still maintaining a proper level of incombustibles. The changes being effected on the present design of the BERC model IV rock dust analyzer should simplify its operation and calibration procedures, resulting in increased accuracy.

The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a means of designing splice connectors which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. Because of the empirical nature of this effort, time has been devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. Special attention is given to the splice flexing machine which served as the backbone of the test program. In order to familiarize persons with connector terminology, a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. Various types of cable joints are also defined. The major effort is a connector design parameter study. Utilizing the optimum parameters developed along with the suggested design procedure outlined in Appendix I should result in significantly improved splice performance and thus meet the objectives of this contract. A field test program was instituted for the purpose of insuring adaptability of connector design and associated installation tooling along with a field performance study. During the course of work, other significant factors affecting splice performance were uncovered. Although not covered by the scope of this contract, a brief discussion is presented for the purpose of stimulating interest in what is considered other fruitful areas for improved splice performance.

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. Coalbeds exhibit a directional permeability, with the maximum permeability oriented parallel to the face cleat. Thus, the most efficient pattern of vertical degasification holes for a coalbed is dependent upon cleat orientation. Surface joints, infrared photolinears, and Ronchi grating photolinears were investigated as potential estimators of subsurface cleat orientation. Cleat orientations were masured in 18 mines, in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to be used as a standard against which prediction techniques would be evaluated. Two cleat systems with a strong geographic segregation were measured in the study area: N 67° W - N 28° E (95° separation) for the north, and N 76° W - N 17° E (93° separation) for the south. Directional data obtained from the three techniques investigated yielded satisfactory regional predictions of cleat orientation. Analysis of surface joints was the only technique considered sufficiently reliable on a local basis. Prediction of cleat orientation is based on the pairing of the principal directional sets into all reasonable combinations of fundamental systems. The system or systems composed of the most dominant sets nearest to 90° separation are likely to be a reliable prediction of cleat orientation. The most dominant set of the system selected is likely to be the face cleat.
