Dust explosion data obtained in laboratory studies by the Bureau of Mines are presented for activated carbon, asphalt, charcoal, carbon black, coal, coke, gilsonite, graphite, lignite, miscellaneous carbons, pitch, tunnel dust, and mixtures of these materials with other ingredients. The explosion hazard is shown to increase as the volatile content of the dusts increases.

The investigation of the nickel - gadolinium phase diagram was undertaken to determine the alloying behavior of these two metals . The data from meltingpoint determinations , thermal analyses , metallographic examinations , and X- ray diffraction analyses revealed a phase diagram with three eutectic points and seven intermetallic compounds . Very limited solubility of the phases in each other was observed . The five phases , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , Ni Gd , Ni, Gd , and NiGd¸ , melted incongruently at about 1,300 ° , 1,270 ° , 1,180 ° , 1,070 ° , and 775 ° C , respectively . Ni Gd and NiGd melted congruently at approximately 1,550 ° and 980 ° C , respectively . Four of the compounds were determined to crystallize in the hexagonal system : Ni Gd , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , and Ni Gd . Ni Gd was determined to be cubic and NiGd , orthorhombic . The crystal system of NiGd was not determined . The eutectic points occurred at 13 , 67 , and 85 wt pct gadolinium , and the isotherms at 1,290 ° , 890 ° , and 700 ° C , respectively .

The Bureau of Mines actively conducted a well-coordinated research pro- gram during the past fiscal year on problems dealing with the production of oil and gas, transportation of natural gas, chemistry and refining of petrole- um, thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons, and the processing and utiliza- tion of incombustible helium gas. These particular reserach phases, compris- ing the presently scheduled activities, are integral parts of a broad program selected soon after the war as suitable for Bureau of Mines study, to meet immediate needs for specific information on petroleum and natural-gas problems of national scope. Important progress was made and many technical reports were finished during the year. Several reports were published on gas-condensate production problems, one giving the results of laboratory tests of relative merits of various steels and alloys for rosisting the corrosion that occurs in high-pressure gas- condensate wells. Research was continued, using the Bureau's windowed cell, to determine the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids, and an important paper on the phase relations of these fluids at low temperatures was published. An important part of the Bureau of Mines petroleum production research program for many yoars has been the engineering study of type oil fields. This year reports waro completed on the Lake Creek, Sheridan, and West Rod River fields, Tex.; the Atlanta field, Ark.; and the Bogge field, W.V. Othor fields under study and for which reports will be issued are the Carthage and Now Hope fields, Tex., and the Weber pool, Okla. Spocial studios to determine the characteristics of the oil-gas solutions as they exist within the native reservoir rocks have been in progress in the North Lindsay field, Okla.; the Elk Basin field, Wyo. and Mont.; and the Rangely field, Colo. The North Lindsay study brought to light several un- usual physical proporties of the oil as it is found in this deep-seated reservoir. For instance, its viscosity is less than that of water, and more than 2 barrels of the initial reservoir oil must be produced to yield 1 barrel of "stock-tank oil." In the Elk Basin and Rangoly fields the oil-gas solution varies in composition within the reservoir, depending upon structural location. Engineering studies were continued on woll spacing and on drilling fluids with special emphasis on obtaining uncontaminated cores, or coros for which the flushing action of the drilling fluid can be dotormined accurately. In connection with research on production of oil by secondary recovery methods, progress was made in studies of conditioning water for subsurface injoction, of input ratos and pressures for water-flooding oil sands, and of the selective plugging the more permeable mediurs to prevent or retard channel- ing of the injected fluid. The availability of fuels for all types of internal-combustion engines still is tho primary resoarch project in potroleum chomistry and refining. This rosearch program is subdivided into a sorios of problems under four main topics: (1) Raw-material studios; (2) relationships of fuel consumption, proporties, and performanco; (3) utilization of potroleum products; and (4) analytical mothods, which include chomical and physical property detorminations.

People ask for information concerning its properties; they want to learn Whence it is derived, how it is produced, and to what uses it may be put. In consequence, the following paper has been written to give in simple terms an account of this most remarkable of gases. It has been thought desirable for purposes of analogy to include reference to All the members of the group of elements to which helium belongs, and, incidentally, to embody in the narrative certain other information pertinent to the subject.

With the national focus on energy, the combustible fraction of urban refuse is being extensively considered as a fuel supplement for coal in the generation of heat and power. The objective of these analytical studies by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the concentration of major, minor, and trace elements in the combustible fractions collected at various locations in the Bureau's urban refuse recycling pilot plant located at College Park, Md. The samples processed through the plant were submitted by various municipalities that are considering resource recovery as an alternative to landfill or other means of disposal. Twenty-five elements were determined in samples from six geographic areas and were compared with element concentrations found in typical coal samples.

An investigation is made into whether commercially available equipment can be used to engineer effective emergency warning systems for underground coal mines. Discussions with members of the Bureau and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration established that the preferred system should operate over the existing Pager Phone twisted pair, and broadcast an audio alarm. Applicable equipments such as voice band tone signaling equipment, alarm sounding equipment, mine telephones and complete alarm systems from over thirty manufacturers are listed. Factors affecting the range over which an alarm could be detected in representative mine situations were studied. These included (a) the subjective masking effects of typical background noise found in mines, such as that due to continuous miners (b) the attenuation of sound in mines (using both a theoretical and experimental results) and (c) the attention-getting qualities of different sound for miners. Audio alarm systems meeting the requirements can be installed and representative systems are described.

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

Phase relations of gadolinium alloyed, up to 40 weight-percent (wt pct), with AISI 304-type stainless steel were established. Body-and face-centered cubic iron-rich solid solution phases and several intermetallic gadolinium-containing compounds of variable composition that approximated the formulas Fe9Gd, Ni7Gd2, Ni3Gd, Fe2Gd, NiGd, and NiGd3 were identified. The intermetallic phases Fe9Gd and Ni7Gd2 were noted to melt at about 1,080° C at about 0 to 2 wt pct gadolinium. The melting temperature of Fe9Gd increased with increas-ing gadolinium content to a plateau at about 1,230°C and 30 wt pct gadolinium, and the melting point of Ni7Gd2 decreased to a plateau at 900° C and 30 wt pct gadolinium where Ni3Gd, NiGd, and Fe2Gd coexist. Body-centered cubic iron solid solution was stable from 1 to 2 wt pct gadolinium to higher contents, 30 wt pct gadolinium or possibly more, and face-centered cubic iron up to 12 wt pct gadolinium below 1,200° C. The stability of these phases above 1,200° C was not resolved except for the mel points. A limited number of fabrication variables as well as mechanical and corrosion properties of alloys containing up to 5 wt pct gadolinium were studied. Equilibrating and forming operations were best conducted at about 940° to 1,080° C. Some variability in the yield and tensile strengths of alloys was noted; however, there was a continual decrease in ductility and impact resistance with increasing gadolinium contents. The resistance of gadolinium alloys to corrosion in water at 354° C was about the same as stainless steel.

"It has been known for some time that sizes of aqueous particles may be affected by flow-induced relative humidity (RH) changes. The RH of air flowing through an impactor decreases as a result of pressure drop through the impactor and increases because of aerodynamic cooling within the high-speed jets, as illustrated in Figure 1. Because the sizes of aqueous particles depend on RH, the impaction stage on which such particles are collected may be different from the stage where they ought to be col¬lected, based on the particle size at the sampler inlet.Fuchs (1980) reviewed literature on water vapor condensation in impactors. The reviewed impactors operated at jet velocities of 100-250 m/s. Particle size increases ow¬ing to water vapor condensation were found in all cases. In one case (Khorguani et al., 1970), it was found that very small droplets (Dp <_ 0.02 um) containing sodium chloride and silver iodide were collected in an impactor with a cut point of 0.32 µm and a jet velocity of 100 m/s. Fuchs believed that such particles could not be captured in an impactor without having been enlarged by condensation. Winkler (1974) sampled at¬mospheric dust with a rectangular nozzle impactor that had a nozzle cross section of 0.3 x 15 mm, a cut size of 0.4 um, and an average jet velocity of 100 m/s. No adhesive was used on the impaction plate. The collection efficiency increased as air humidity was increased from 20% to 100%. The effect was especially noticeable in the increased collection efficiency for hygroscopic particles, and was attributed to condensation.Extensive theoretical and experimental research work on the distortion of the particle size distributions in impactors was done by Biswas and coworkers (1985, 1987). The impactors employed in the study were a low-pressure impactor with high jet velocity stages (Hering et al., 1978, 1979) and a conventional six-stage impactor, Sierra's model 226, operated in the incompressible regime. Ammonium sulfate aerosols were chosen for the study. In the low-pressure impactor, an orifice operating at a Mach number of 1 causes a sudden pressure drop, significantly reducing the RH in the next two stages (stages 5 and 6). This results in a 0.15-um diameter ammonium sulfate droplet shrinking to about 0.07 um at stage 5 when the inlet RH is 95%. In stage 7, the tempera¬ture drop is considerable because the jet speed is sonic. For an inlet RH of 95%, a 0.03 um droplet grows to about 0.06 um. However, the same size droplet at an inlet RH of 25% grows to only 0.04 um. For the Sierra model 226 cascade impactor that is operated with a Mach number of 0.27 at the last stage (stage VI), it was found that for an inlet RH of about 67%, particle growth would occur in stage VI. At 80% RH, both stages V and VI were affected. Biswas et al. (1987) stated that Mach number alone does not determine the size biasing; the type of aerosol, the inlet conditions, the temperature and pressure ratio, and the impactor geometry (throat length, jet-to-plate distance, etc.) must be considered for each stage in evaluating the distortion of the particle size distribution."

Air and water pollution and land reclamation relating to coal mining and utilization continued to be featured in research and technologic work on coal by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Details of the environmental studies are given in this report, along with accounts of other research relating to the mining and utilization of coal. Other studies that were continued during 1967 included health and safety, mine explosives, coal preparation and transportation, coal utilization processes, chemistry and properties of coal, inspection and analysis, and inter-national activities. Publications issued in 1967 are cited throughout the report and in appendix C. Bureau of Mines research centers and laboratories are listed in appendix A, and organizations contributing to or cooperating in the work, in appendix B.

Capital and operating costs have been estimated for separating methane and hydrogen in gas - separating plants designed to produce 90 million scf per day of product gas containing a minimum of 90 percent methane . After a preliminary literature review of various separation techniques , three different processes --moving - bed adsorption using active carbon , oil absorption , and liquefaction -- were chosen for the cost estimates . Three different methane feed gas concentrations , 5 , 20 , and 50 percent ( cases 1 , 2 , and 3 , respectively ) , were chosen as representative methane concentrations for the separation estimates . Capital and operating costs were lowest for the moving - bed adsorption process in all three cases investigated . Operating costs declined from $ 0.24 to $ 0.06 per 1,000 cu ft of product gas , and capital costs declined from $47,490,800 to $7,411,200 as the percentage of methane in the feed gas increased from 5 to 50 percent .

Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. The U.S. economy grew moderately in the second quarter of 1985 with real gross national product (GNP) recording a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 2.0%, up from the 0.3% growth of the previous quarter but significantly below the 7.1% growth of the second quarter of 1984 (table I). Personal consumption expenditures grew 5.3%, with purchases of durable and nondurable goods rising 7.4% and 5.1 %, respectively; nonresidential and residential fixed investment--the two components of fixed investment--grew 11.8% and 5.6%, respectively; and Government spending rose 3.6%. However, these gains were tempered by a major decline in the growth of business inventories (from $19.1 billion to $8.3 billion) and the continuing growth of the net export deficit (from -$28.4 billion to -$33.3 billion). While the high value of the dollar compared with other currencies has been a major cause of the expanding trade deficit, its value, as measured by the monthly Federal Reserve Board (FRB) multilateral trade-weighted dollar index, has declined over 17 index points from its February peak to 140.94 in July. The July dollar value was still high historically. The rate of inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted price index for GNP, remained low at 4.1%, down from 4.3% in the first quarter, and employment continued to grow at a rate sufficient to keep up with new additions to the labor force. Civilian unemployment has remained steady at 7.3% over the past 6 months. Industry Statistics The FRB recently revised its index of industrial production and changed the base year from 1967 to 1977,1/ The revised total index shows a 0.1 % higher annual growth rate between 1967 and 1984 than the previous index. In the slower growing or declining industries, such as metal mining, primary metals, and fabricated metals, however, downward revisions in the indices and rates of growth have occurred. The previous and revised annual rates of growth between 1977 and 1984 for several of the sectors of interest to the mining industry are shown in table 2.

The present final report constitutes the total productivity of a series of contracts from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences over the period 1971-1979. The emphasis on the research has been analytical. In this "executive summary" we give a succinct description of each phase of the investigation. In the first phase of the investigation that was stimulated by the National Academy of Engineering, we concentrated on the analytical studies of techniques relevant to mine rescue. Several specific procedures for locating a buried source were analyzed. In the next, but overlapping phase of the investigation, we dealt with the fundemental character of how electromagnetic waves propagate in mine tunnels. At the outset we allowed for the finite conductivity of the tunnel walls and the presence of axial conductors such as cables, pipes, and tracks. The third phase of the investigation was devoted to the analyses of various specific geophysical engineering problems. The related fourth phase dealt with the general subject of non-destructive testing of wire ropes such as used for mine hoists.
