"Introduction.The third annual mine-rescue maneuvers of the Globe-Miami District First Aid and Mine Rescue Association were held at Globe, Ariz., on November 5 and 6, 1923. The first demonstration was held in October 1922, and the results** from that experiment, both in the practical training and the interest aroused in the apparatus men, were so much more satisfactory than those from the ordinary smoke-chamber training, that Orr Woodburn, director of the Association, decided to hold similar maneuvers at frequent intervals. The second test was held on March 21-22, 1923, in connection with the meeting of the Southwest Mining Section of the National Safety Council at Globe.Place and Organization.The recent maneuvers were held in the same mine and conducted in the same general manner as the first, and the points of interest not brought out previously are described below. By studying the accompanying map the movement of the teams can be better understood.Thirty-three apparatus men were out on the first day and thirty-two on the second day, a total of forty-three men being trained.Mr. Woodburn was aided in directing the work by his two assistants from the mine-rescue station, two local safety engineers, and an engineer from the Bureau of Mines. Local mine superintendents and the State deputy mine inspector were interested spectators."

[The theory of fractional "eduction" of oil from oil shale has been used by several inventors as the basis for the design of retorts for the production of oil f roan the oil shales of the United States. The term fractional "eduction" gives expression to the rather common belief that when an oil shale is he-test et produces light, low-boiling oils at to temperatures, and increasingly heavier, higher-boiling oils as the temperature of retorting rites. The theory evidently had its is origin in the fact that crude petroleum may be fractionally distilled, yielding light oils at low distillation temperatures, and heavier oils as the distillation temperature increases. Thus, gasoline is produced from petroleum at relatively log: temperatures, kerosene at a higher temperature, and heavier products such as gas-oil and lubricating distillates at still higher temepratures, The writers have examined several oil-shale retorts designed to take advantage of the belief that crude, and en some cases refined, gasoline can be recovered from the shale at low temperatures; kerosene at higher temperatures, and so on. Such retorts are usually designed to operate continuously, and. have several vapor-pipes lending from them at differing intervals and passing to separate condensers. Designers of such retorts expect that the distillate from the low-temperature parts of the retort will be gasoline, and that as the shale basses to zones of increasingly higher temperatures, the vapor lines leading from these zones will remove increasingly heavier products such as kerosene, gas-oil, etc.]

The present report contains additional individual analyses of crude, oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties.

"Introduction.Atmospheric conditions relative to high temperature and humidity are of great importance in mining, as well as in such allied fields as railroad and vehicular tunnels. An extended investigation into the effect of these factors on men has been in progress for some time, both in the field under actual working conditions, and at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in cooperation with the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and the U. S. Public Health Service.For several years one of the writers (Dr. Sayers) and L. Harrington, supervising mining engineer of the bureau, have been studying the effects of hot humid atmosphere in metal mines on the comfort and efficiency of the workers. Some of the reactions experienced in still and in moving saturated mine air at temperatures of 90 to 100°F., with men at rest are presented in a recent paper.****The present paper is based on experiments made under carefully controlled conditions to determine the relative feeling of warmth experienced by men in atmospheres of various degrees of temperature and humidity. The work was conducted by the research laboratory of the American society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, in special physchrometric chambers built for this purpose. It was carried on under the direction of F. Paul Anderson, director of the laboratory, Dr. R. R. Sayers and A. C. Fieldner of the Bureau of Mines. The results given in this paper are for still air only. Investigations of the effects of moving air are being continued, and will be reported later."

[The rapid expansion of the petroleum industry, the steadily growing use of oil fuel or steamships, the increasing transportation of oil in tankers and the extensive use of petroleum oils for many land industries, has resulted in pollution of our coastal eaters by these oils. On account of the great importance of this problem to the petroleum and shipping industries its, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and -he American Steamship Owners Association has undertaken to ascertain the extend of petroleum oil pollution along the coasts of the United States and to indicated the principal so arcs of such pollution. Certain typical methods and devices in use and proposed for the separation of oil from water, and for the disposal of oily castes from ships and industrial plants have been studied. An attempt has also been made to point out the nature of the fire hazard resulting from oil pollution and to indicate the effect of such pollution on bathing beaches.]

This paper deals with the second phase of an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Part 1 dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entries and was issued as Serial 2621 of the Bureau of Mines, in July 1924. Description of tests. After the resistance of an unobstructed entry to flow of air had been determined by tests in the Experiment mine, mine cars were; run into the test section in various arrangements and the increase in resistance was determined. The cars used were of the wooden type with loose end gate, and would hold about one ton of coal, level full. They were 7 feet long. 4 feet 2 inches wide above the wheels, 3 feet high, and had a cross-sectional area of approximately 10 square feet. The average area of the entry was about 57 square feet, the ratio of unobstructed to total area being about 17.6 per cent. The track gage was 42 inches and the wheel-base 20 inches.

[The geophone has occupied a prominent position as a mine signalling device since its first introduction. The Bureau has carried out tests at different times with a view to improving the early geophones. The following paper describes briefly the adaption of the vacuum-tube audio frequency Amplifier to a new form of geophone. It is not intended to convey the idea that the results described are sufficient to warrant the drawing of definite conclusions as to the practicability of the electrical geophone, but the data and tests liven herein are made public because of their possible use to the industry and as a result of inquiries received as to the feasibility of such adaptions and modifications of the early geophones. Because of the limited time available to the authors, only one geophone with its auxiliary amplifier was constructed. As is well known, two geophones are necessary in order to determine the direction of a sound. Although the principles upon which the electrical geophone operates appear to be fundamentally correct, it is not possible to state whether two such devices 'rill function as efficiently, (as regards determining direction of sound) as the present geophone. In order to operate efficiently as a direction finder, the amplifiers of the electrical geophone must each amplify with exactly the same degree of magnitude. By proper design and adjustment this can probably be accomplished without greatly complicating the design. inasmuch as audio frequency amplification is used, no tuning; is necessary as is the case with tuned radio-frequency circuits. The same filament and plate batteries can be used to operate the amplifiers and by the use of dry cell tubes, requiring shall filament and plate currents, it if believed that a compact, portable and practical instrument can be evolved. Further investigations of the electrical geophone should be conducted to determine the points outlined in this preliminary report.]

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants.

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. Bureau of Mines, E. A. Holbrook and W. W. Odell; Illinois Gas Association, C. W. Bradley and R. B. Harper; University of Illinois, Dean C. R. Richards, Prof. S. W. Parr, and Prof. H. H. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

The results of investigations of the oil-shale resources of the United States were first published by the United States Geological Survey in 1915.1 Other reports 2 have followed. These reports, investigations by private individuals and corporations, and the beginning of the development of an oil-shale industry in this country have aroused considerable interest in the possibilities of these shales as a commercial source of hydrocarbon oils. The Bu- . reau of Mines bas appreciated these possibilities, and since 1916 one or more of its engineers have given all or part of their time to investigations relating to the treatment of oil shales. A short pamphlet a containing general information on the possibilities of oil shale in this country, particularly the shales of the Rocky Mountain district, has already been published. This pamphlet gives methods for assaying the shales of oil and ammonia and contains a bibliography for the use of those desiring to search the literature.

The prevention of coal-mine explosions has been one of the chief purposes of the Bureau of Mines. In facti the first Federal appropriation relating to mining methods, in 1908, authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and the possible methods of preventing them. When that investigation started the mining industry had not determined the real causes of a succession of terrible coal-mine explosions in various countries, culminating in the great disasters at CoulTièl'es, France, and Monongah, W. Va. Coal dust as an agent of widespread explosions had been under suspicion, and watering to allay the dust was recommended by some mining engineers but the watering of coal-mine dust was adopted in comparatively few mines of the United States and Great Britain, and had not been introduced widely in any country except Germany. Rock dusting, another method of preventing explosions of coal dust, was early tested with success by the Bureau of Mines in its fist gallery at Pittsburgh and, beginnig in 1911, at the experimental mine, Bruceton, Pa. Several of the fist publications i of the bureau suggested that rock dust be used in gaseous or dusty bituminous mines, and in 1915 Technical Paper 842 strongly recommended it. Since that time additional tests in the experimental mine have fully confied this :ft judgment.

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

On entering the World War the United States was confronted with the necessity of building in a short time a large number of ships of tonnage adequate to transport troops and war materials to Europe and to carry food supplies to the allied countries, whose merchant fleets had suffered greatly by submarine warfare. The necessity of building ships quickly led to the formation of the United States Shipping Board, which was charged with the duty of developing an efficient organization for the purpose. Such an organization was developed under the name of the Emergency Fleet Corporation; it was under the control of the Government, but could conduct its business in the most direct way, like a private corporation. In order to build the largest- number of ships possible without drawing too heavily on the steel industry, which was already taxed heavily by the production of munitions, it was decided to build wooden as well as steel ships. These ships were built from a few standard designs to enable a large number of duplicate parts to be fabricated in inland shops and transported by railroad to the shipyards on the seacoast, where they were assembled into ships. In other words, the plan was to manufacture the ships rather than to build them. The shops on the seacoast were reserved to make those parts of the ships' equipment that could not readily be transported. The inland shops made the parts that could be transported to the seacoast by railroad. Among the more important parts of the ships' equipment to be standardized were the boilers. As the Scotch marine boiler in large units is bulky and can not be transported by railroad, and as, for the same capacity,much more steelis needed in its construction than for water-tube boilers, a few simple designs of water-tube boilers were developed that inland shops having ordinary equipment could make in large quantities.

This bulletin reviews, in the light of recent experience, the use of production-decline curves in estimating the future production of oil from wells. It deals with the estimation of the reserves of recoverable oil in properties already producing or in those adjacent to them, takes cognizance of the physical laws governing expulsion of oil from oil sands, and shows how the production-decline curve can be made to utilize these laws in estimating reserves and rates of production. The valuation of oil properties should be based on the total amount of oil recoverable from a property by the methods in use, the rate of recovery, the cost of production, and the selling price. Numerous other curves besides those for reserves and rates of production may be formed from the production-decline curve and will present desired information in a convenient time-saving form. These curves also are described. Methods developed before the production-decline curve method was used are briefly discussed in order that the principles on which estimations of oil reserves are based may be made plain. The construction of curves and tables for estimating future production of individual wells and of average wells in most of the important oil districts of the United States is described and operating problems that may be solved by the use of production-decline curves are discussed. The bulletin does not deal with costs, oil prices, or the methods of evaluating oil properties. Many engineers have amply demonstrated the value of the production- decline curve method by forecasting within reasonable limits the production of many thousands of wells and tracts. The value of similar estimates depends however, on (1) the application of trustworthy methods; (2) the care and judgment of the estimator; and (3) the length and reliability of the records and the accuracy of ofher information used in estimating future production. When adequate records and information are available, experience has shown that It qualified engineer can forecast production far more accurately than has been deemed possible, except where the usual conditions governing the expulsion of oil from a sand have been radically changed by applying compressed air or by flooding with water, or, to a less degree, by using vacuum. In general, the production-decline curve method, though there are limits to its accuracy, is far more trustworthy than any other.

"IntroductionThis preliminary report deals with the effect of oxygen pressure on the ignition temperature and combustibility of oils, it is the third of a series which will present the results of an investigation being made by the Bureau of Mines, on oxygen-oil explosions. The purpose of this research is to obtain technical data that will serve as a basis for safety precautions general outline of the problem has been given in the first report (Serial 2507).The present experiments have resulted in (1) a method for determining spontaneous ignition points of oils in an atmospheric of oxygen under pressure; and (2) the determination of these ignition temperatures for three typical oils, one being an animal oil (sperm), one a vegetable oil (linseed), and one a mineral oil (""Moiloil A"").These experiments on explosibility of oil were performed in order to discover the general nature of the phenomenon, especially the order of magnitude of the temperature necessary for spontaneous explosion (120°C. and upwards) and the effect of pressure variation (negligible as regards ignition temperature but important in relation to the violence of the explosion). A continuation oftests should provide a basis for selecting the safest lubricants for high pressure compression of gases particularly air and oxygen; and should be of value when devising new specifications for lubricants, both in the government departments and the compressed-gas manufacturing industry."

"Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

"During the development of the sulphur dioxide leaching process for the treatment of ""mixed"" copper ores at the Southwest experiment station of the Bureau of Mines*** the pulp from treatment of roasted cupriferous pyrite with sulphur dioxide gases and water showed an unexpected amount of sulphuric acid. After following out several false premises it was found that this was due to iron in the solution, and also that this iron tended to oxidize to the ferric state if the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the roaster gases used did not rise above a certain figure. While the percentage of iron present was email it was enough to cause an entirely different set of conditions from those of the original sulphur dioxide leaching process and to promise a much wider application of the general idea. Sulphurous acid dissolves only certain copper minerals, sulphuric acid solutions certain additional minerals and ferric sulphate solutions certain further additional copper minerals, so this observation was of importance in connection with possibilities in the hydrometallurgy of the so-called ""mixed"" or partly oxidized copper ores.The work has been carried along by a number of experimenters. L. R. Eckman, junior chemist of the Southwest station, contributed largely to the early developments. L. Roberts, W. D. Bonner and C. G. Maier each in turn physical chemists at the Pacific Experiment station, (Berkeley, Calif.) have studied the reactions involved. A complete report of all the work on this process will be prepared later under the direction of O. C. Rolston. The purpose of the present paper is to place a summary of the more practical phases of this seemingly important piece of work before those interested."

"In blasting the explosion of the high explosives charge is initiated by means of a detonator. Consequently the successful operation of the whole system is, ab initio dependent upon the suitability and efficiency of the detonator used. A considerable number of methods for testing the efficiency of detonators have been devised. In a previous publication*** of the Bureau of Mines many of these were discussed after having been classified as direct and indirect methods.In 1910, W. O, Snelling, then explosives chemist of the Bureau, devised a direct method which depends on the extent to which a hard brittle material of uniform granulation, such as quartz sand, is pulverized by the explosion of the detonator when imbedded in it, and, as a container in which to carry out the tests, he devised the vessel known as the Bureau of Mines sand-test bomb No. 1. A brief mention of his work was made in a paper presented to the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania.****Later Storm and Cope made a very extended investigation of this method using sand-test bomb No, 1. Their paper***** contains a detailed, illustrated, description of sand-test bomb No. 1, with precise specifications of the sand and a minute account of the technique followed, together with a discussion of the data they obtained from the tests in this bomb of 112 detonators representing each of the grades from We, 3 to No. 10, inclusive. The average of results obtained by them are set forth in the following table."

"The bad effects upon the health and output of miners that result when the ventilating current in a mine lacks sufficient cooling power have been described by Harrington and Sayers in a previous report (1)*** The normal temperature of the human body is about 98.5°F. and whenever work is done by the muscles, indeed even when sitting still, the normal bodily processes generate heat which must be given off, otherwise the body will become overheated and a number of bad effects will be produced. If it were possible to so enclose a man that he could continue to breathe and no heat could escape from his body he would die within a short time. In a series of experiments made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of McConnell and Houghton (2) found that a dry-bulb and a wet-bulb temperature of 112.5°F could he borne for only 35 minutes, even when the subject was at rest. A wet-bulb temperature of 100.4°F (dry-bulb 157°F) could only be tolerated for 45°F minute. Under such conditions the bodily temperature rises as much as 45°F above normal and the pulse is accelerated. Very uncomfortable sensations are felt when the pulse rate exceeds 135. The human body, like any other internal combustion engine, must be cooled in order to function properly.Under ordinary circumstances the air surroundings people is enough coder than themselves to permit this heat generated within the boiy to be river off with¬out difficulty.
