"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

This paper presents the vibrating mill technology and summarizes the grinding principle of ultra fine grinding. In addition, a variety of operations is described and the benefits of these different operating modes? product size and efficiency are specified. A case study of an industrial application is presented to show the integration of vibrating mills into grinding circuits. The primary focus is the overall process scheme of this technology, the installation and operating costs, as well as the design parameters required for best performance. The vibrating mill can be used in a wide range of applications for process engineering duties. For a wide range of applications, from soft to extremely hard products, which require ultra fine grinding, surface activation or homogenization, the vibrating mill is well proven. Due to its easy operation, versatility and operation efficiency, the PALLA? vibrating mill gains in importance in the mineral processing industry. Correlations for the critical velocity needed to hydraulically convey particles in horizontal, or near-horizontal, pipes are either explicitly dependent upon the shear stress imparted by the fluid upon the surface of the particle bed, or require a velocity and hydraulic diameter. Often such approaches are modified to account for pipe inclination by the introduction of simple factors. However, we assert that the physics that underpins the hydraulic conveying of particles in steep pipes (such as a directionally drilled oil well) is dissimilar to that which governs particle behaviour in horizontal pipes. In steeply inclined systems, a sliding sediment induces an upward counter flow and hence an autogenous contribution to the shear rate. The physics underpinning particle hydraulic conveying in steep systems is explored using the separation results of Laskovski et al.10

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of ?Google maps?? underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum?s new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. Managers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems. The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. In- corporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined.

Large structures in mines (faults, dykes, pillars, abutments) fail when the load exceeds the strength. If the loading system stiffness (LSS, also referred to as the ‘local mine stiffness’) is lower than the stiffness of the structure the failure will be unstable. The greater the difference between these stiffnesses, the greater the energy release during unstable failure. A method has been formulated by which the LSS is established through cost-effective numerical modelling while insight into the structure stiffness (source stiffness - SS) is provided by apparent stiffness, a parameter based on the empirical relation between seismic moment and radiated seismic energy of small seismic events from the area/volume of interest. By plotting LSS vs SS a ‘stiffness diagram’ is constructed that is useful for seismic hazard ranking of different structures. A comparative back-analysis of the Dagbreek fault in Welkom, South Africa, (source of the 1990 Matjhabeng earthquake) and two other nearby faults confirm the applicability of the method. An extension of the method, where ‘hazard magnitude’ is used as a measure of the LSS, allows a ‘stiffness diagram’ to be constructed using seismic data only. Les larges structures dans les exploitations minières (failles, dikes, piliers, culées) s’écroulent lorsque la charge dépasse la résistance. Si la raideur du système de chargement (LSS, aussi appelé la « raideur de la mine locale ») est plus basse que la raideur de la structure, l’éboulement sera instable. Plus la différence est grande entre ces deux raideurs, plus l’énergie dégagée pendant l’éboulement instable est grande. Une méthode a été formulée selon laquelle le LSS est établi par modélisation numérique rentable, tandis que la raideur de la structure (SS – raideur de la source) est établie par la raideur apparente, un paramètre basé sur la relation empirique entre le moment sismique et l’énergie sismique radiée de petits moments sismiques dans l’aire/volume en question. On trace le « diagramme de raideur » en relevant les deux mesures (LSS et SS), ce qui est utile pour classer les risques sismiques de structures différentes. On vérifie l’applicabilité de la méthode en comparant la faille de Welkom, Afrique du Sud (foyer du séisme de Matjhabeng en 1990) avec deux autres failles proches. Une extension de cette méthode, dans laquelle on utilise la « magnitude du risque » comme mesure du LSS, permet de construire le « diagramme de raideur » avec des données sismiques seulement. Es wurde eine Methode formuliert, durch die das LSS durch eine kosteneffektive numerisches Modell erstellt wird, während ein Einblick von der offensichtlichen Steifheit in die Struktursteifheit (Quellensteifheit - SS) gegeben ist, ein Parameter der auf der emipirischen Relation zwischen seismischem Moment und ausgestrahlter seismischer Energie von kleinen seismischen Ereignissen vom Interessens-/Volumenbereich basiert. Durch das Kartograpahieren der LSS in Bezug auf die SS wird ein `Steifheitsdiagramm ' konstruiert, welches für seismische Gefahrklassifizierung der unterschiedlichen Strukturen nützlich ist. Eine vergleichende Postanalyse der Dagbreek Verwerfung in Welkom, Südafrika, (Zentrum des Matjhabeng Erdbebens 1990) und in zwei anderen nahe gelegenen Verwerfungen bestätigen die Anwendbarkeit der Methode. Eine Verlängerung der Methode, in der die `Gefahrengröße' als Maß für das LSS verwendet wird, gestattet, daß ein `Steifheitsdiagramm' konstruiert wird, welches nur seismische Daten verwendet.

Large-scale variability in process plants and process control can be identified and controlled through disaggregating the overall variability in a process stream. Conventional statistics and Statistical Process Control (SPC) fail to address the concept of stream heterogeneity, therefore fail to identify and distinguish between the various sources of variability in a process stream. A modified set of 445 data from a process plant is used as an example to explain the benefits of variography in process control. Large-scale variability, usually in the form of product composition cycles and chemical cyclic variations may be manifest throughout a sampling system or a process plant, but this type of variability is most easily discernable in one-dimensional process streams. The Moving Average is a powerful tool for identifying large and small scale variability and cyclical behaviour in process streams, while the variogram is a custom built tool that allows the components of variability to be identified and resolved. The positions in the variogram at which the different variance can be read and the nomenclature of these types of variability is described. The transfer of variances converted to standard deviations to the Control Charts, allows an operator to appreciate the appropriateness of Upper and Lower control and specification limits. The overall contribution of the various sources of variability is represented in a pie diagram.

This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.
