One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.

Purpose In order for the SAIMM to remain relevant and ensure maximum value to all members, Council propose three changes to the Constitution. 2. Background Three changes to the Constitution were proposed by the Council on 21 July 2006. These changes now have to be approved by means of a ballot at a Special General Meeting. The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s (SD) neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding SD. This paper describes the proposed controlled flooding of REL 4, the planned in-service monitoring of the five plugs and the water barrier between REL 4 and South Deep Mine, and the long-term maintenance of the plugs and rock mass in the immediate vicinity of the plugs.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

This paper will highlight the system components of a successful underground mining automation project recently launched at DeBeers Finsch Mine. It will also show that integration of short-term mine planning with other upstream and downstream mining processes in the extraction of kimberlite ore from a block cave is not just critical to the future sustainability of this underground mining operation but also for profitability and cost-effectiveness. This paper will discuss the information data flow required from the mine-planning process through to production for underground block cave mining. The benefits associated with this type of integrated mine planning and automation system will be highlighted.

The recovery of gold from old mine dumps has been carried out over the last two decades. The gold value and price together with recovery methods, determine whether it is economical to process a dump. Pre-concentration with cyclones and spiral concentrators may offer a method to process dumps considered currently uneconomical to treat.

Mantoverde Division of Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos S.A., Anglo American Chile, developed an open pit mine to exploit copper oxide ore. Mantoverde mine is located in the Province of Chañaral, Northern Chile, about 1,020 Km far from Santiago. Currently, the East wall of the mine is reaching the condition of final pit. To evaluate the possibility of a pit optimization on this wall a geotechnical study was performed, including slope stability analyses by limit equilibrium and numerical methods. As a result of this geotechnical evaluation, it was decided to allow a probability of failure of 12% for instabilities affecting up to 600,000 tonnes, and use steeper slopes on the East Wall of the mine. This paper describes this geotechnical evaluation and how the results of the stability analyses were used to define a flexible slope design, which allows modification if the observed slope behaviour deviated from the expected one.

It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixture of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of a stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for platinum-bearing UG2 ore. Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal, gold, platinum, titanium minerals, zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese. The DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and technology in South Africa conference will focus on the operation of DMS and Gravity Concentration circuits in the South African Mining Industry. The current status of the technologies and equipment employed will be presented as well as future developments. The conference was set up to showcase South African DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and provide a forum where operators, technology and equipment suppliers can engage in knowledge sharing. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including descriptions of operations, optimisation projects, new capital projects, equipment applications, process monitoring and process selection. Most commodities and unit processes associated with DMS and Gravity Concentration are covered. The conference venue was selected to be the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria. The CSIR has contributed to DMS research in South Africa and it is located not far from many coal, diamond, gold, platinum and chrome mines that extensively utilise DMS and Gravity Concentration in their beneficiation plants. I believe that the papers and presentations submitted for this conference will provide a valuable future reference for DMS and Gravity Concentration, thus making the work of all the contributors to this conference highly rewarding and worthwhile.

The roof of the Sishen cave is being mined in order to exploit 6.8Mt of high grade ore. The cavity is filled with quartzite backfill in order to support the roof in the event of collapse. The cave dips at approximately 37o, is 260m along dip and 70m along strike and has a total volume of 261,391m3. GPS and optical monitoring techniques were attempted to detect subsidence but proved to be impractical. The GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR) uses differential interferometry to measure sub millimetre movement in a rock face. The SSR was applied in a non production situation and detected subsidences of 38mm/day before visual signs of instability were detected. The rate of deformation detected was slowing as a result of the roof coming to rest on underlying backfill. Monitoring during production drilling detected a sudden subsidence of 18.6mm/hour which resulted in the evacuation of personnel from the area. Further inspection of data showed that the rate of deformation was slowing and production was allowed to continue without further incident. The SSR has helped dispel the fears of workers and has proven that subsidence can be accurately measured and delineated with the SSR.

The junior and small-scale mining sectors in South Africa play an important role in the livelihoods of numerous communities. Mining presents an opportunity, in the post-1994 democratic era, for many individuals to obtain access to much required empowerment and socio-economic development. These sectors are, however, not without numerous characteristics that pose problems for operators, legislators, and other role-players. Mining is inherently risky, with operators experiencing frequent difficulties and challenges throughout the life of mine. Opportunity exists, and needs to be enhanced, for junior and small-scale prospects and operations to include technical risk assessment techniques in documentation presented in search for funding, and in optimizing monthly planning and longer-term functioning. The focus here is to explore how the risk management cycle may currently be applied to a mineral resource suitable for exploitation by the junior and small-scale mining sectors. No management process can create additional value in the ground, but various available mechanisms can go a long way to quantifying the inherent risk that exists, highlighting the need to manage the risks and hopefully allowing the entrepreneur access to the intrinsic opportunities of the emerging mining sector in South Africa.

Bateman Minerals & Metals supplies the APIC Technologies which include the under-bed air-pulsed APIC jig and related technologies such as the JigScan controller and advanced mathematical models of the jig process. Bateman have developed a methodology for predicting process performance for jigs from simplified testing and modelling, based on batch equipment matched to industrial designs. Batch tests conducted on laboratory scale air-pulsed jigs can process small batches of material, such as those obtained from drill core samples. The novelty comes from using an advanced jig process model, ASTRAD, to link the results of batch and continuous jigs. The batch jig presented as a novelty in this paper has been designed to be hydraulically equivalent to the full-scale APIC Jig, allowing the generation of equivalent pulse shapes and using JigScan controller. Lump and fine ferrous ore material have been separated in this unit and any feed >1mm can be tested and extracted. The global test procedure and further modelling focus on the stratification of material, with emphasis on key aspects such as pulse shape, feed characteristics and residence time. The splitting of rejects from concentrates is itself more difficult to reproduce in batch jigging, however the ASTRAD model includes a separation imperfection module, and the APIC Technologies have extraction systems adapted to each type of material. Air pulsed batch jigs are available in several locations and are relocatable. They have been used to treat samples from Australia, South Africa and India as part of studies into ore processing using jigs. Each test layer is available for various physical testing procedures (density and chemical analyses). Test-work is performed on a case by case basis, and analysed using an advanced model ?now available over the internet. Some fundamentals of air-pulsed jigging are recapped along with some of the features of APIC jigs. The process of designing a ?hydraulically equivalent? batch jig test is then described. Some results from jigging tests are presented plus the results of the ASTRAD advanced jig model, which was first developed at the JKMRC with ferrous ores and coal and is now being supported and further developed and utilised by Bateman.

Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.

A mathematical model for bioleaching at the agglomerate scale is developed. The agglomerate is defined as a unit volume of a heap which contains a solid phase (a size distribution of ore particles), a liquid phase (stagnant and flowing leaching solution) and a gas phase (flowing air and air pockets). Leaching at the level of an ore particle is modelled using a diffusion-reaction equation, and oxidation by attached and detached microbes is treated separately. With the aid of the mathematical model, the effect of particle size distribution on the bioleaching of an ore containing a mixture of chalcocite and pyrite, and a culture of iron oxidizers, is investigated.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective. In their excellent paper, Milev and Spottiswoode have provided quantitative and definitive descriptions of an important phenomenon that hitherto has been largely the subject of conjecture. They convincingly show that ?site-response? can amplify the strong ground motions on the rock-wall of a stressed tunnel by a factor of 10 to 12 compared with the PPV in the solid rock mass (at the same distance from source). This knowledge gives us a firm foundation from which to begin to build an understanding of the mechanism of damage resulting from a rock burst. Regrettably this understanding is still far from adequate, in my opinion. The authors of this paper, however, have made some statements that are too reassuring and which tend to reinforce the sense of complacency that prevails among many members of the rock engineering community on the deep gold mines.
