In my view, the establishment of the level at which South African gold output is at some kind of optimum is an interesting though somewhat academic exercise. Contribution by D. M. Hawkins* The thesis of the paper is a very interesting one, but, before it is used as the basis of any firm proposals to restructure the mining industry, which changes may be irreversible, one should be very sure that the basis of the calculations is sound. Niewenhuizen* The hypothesis advanced by Mr Monro that the demonetization of gold in August 1971 introduced a major new policy variable, namely the supply-pricejdemand-price relationships, into the decision making process touches on a matter that has never really been given serious thought by the industry. Recent research into the prediction of mining-induced seismic events by the monitoring of small microseismic events at Western Deep levels Gold Mine is described. Measurement and interpretation techniques and results are presented. It was found that the occurrence of the larger events near longwall faces on the Carbon leader reef is preceded for some hours by an increased rate of microseismic emission and spatial concentration of the microseismic events in the zone of eventual failure. The research is currently being expanded with the aim of producing a practical rockburst early-warning system.

The investigation, which was conducted at Iscor's Newcastle works (in Natal), was aimed at the development of reliable, consistent, and cost-effective methods of sampling. In the sampling of hot metal, it was found that lollipop and spoon samples had identical sulphur analyses, and negligibly different silicon analyses. Thus, spoon sampling of the hot metal was implemented, with a resultant saving of over RIOO 000 per annum on lollipop samplers. In the sampling of steel, aluminium -killed samples were found to have lower phosphorus analyses than titanium killed samples. Spoon sampling was rejected in this application since the use of titanium wire would be too costly. It was decided that titanium would be used as the deoxidant in lollipop samples of steel, and that the Leco carbon! sulphur analyser would be used as the sole arbiter of sulphur content.

The Institute revived a valuable tradition when, on the 19th of March, 1983, it held its first 'annual' banquet in some fifteen years. It was such a sparkling success that it is sure to be held more frequently in future. The success of the occasion was borne out by the fact that the main banqueting hall at the Wanderers Club was filled to capacity, with over four hundred members and guests.

The recovery of gold, uranium, and pyrite from accumulated residues at mines in the Orange Free State is adversely affected by the presence of pyrophyllite, which is naturally floatable and must be prevented from floating with the desired constituents by the use of a mica depressant, and of thucholite (uraniferous kerogen), which contains significant quantities of uranium and gold but does not float readily in the presence of a mica depressant. In laboratory tests on these residues, the use of a mixture of MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and paraffin in addition to the suite of reagents normally used was found to increase the gold recovery substantially, but the sulphur grade was lower. The recovery of thucholite also increased considerably, but the proportion of uranium associated with this mineral was small. Plant trials, which are continuing, have been encouraging, indicating an increase in the gold recovery of 4,6 per cent.

After bench-scale and pilot-plant tests in which it was shown that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) can achieve good recoveries of gold and uranium from Witwatersrand residues, a production size machine was installed at a gold mine. The mechanical and metallurgical performance of this machine have been satisfactory, and the economics of the process are attractive. WHIMS can be combined with other unit operations like flotation for the optimization of overall gold and uranium recoveries. This concept is shown to be relevant, not only to operations for the retreatment of tailings, but to processes for the treatment of coarser material. In the latter, there is a saving in energy consumption compared with the energy required for the fine grinding of the total feed, and a material suitable for underground backfill can be produced. Improved. more cost-effective WHIMS machines currently under development are also described.

On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

This paper is concerned with heat flow in the plane of a typical cross-section of a deep underground airway. A new algorithm, called the quasi-steady method, is presented for the calculation of rock temperatures in that plane. The algorithm is used in the computation of heat and moisture transfer rates from the rock to the ventilating air for an airway that is wet on part of its circumference and dry elsewhere. The speed and accuracy of the new method are demonstrated on a microcomputer, and it is argued that this method offers a considerably more versatile and physically meaningful alternative to previous methods for the prediction of increases in air temperature along mine airways. The algorithm is also used to explore the concept of a uniformly wet airway that is equivalent to a partly wet airway in terms of its effect on the ventilating air. The concept is shown to be reasonable, but more complex than one might have anticipated. Finally, several useful extensions and applications of the new method are suggested.

Three types of high-strength cold-rolled steels are discussed. Two are currently being developed at Iscor: rephos phorized steel and niobium microalloyed steel. Heat treatment after cold rolling is carried out in batch annealing furnaces. A third type, dual-phase steel, which requires a continuous annealing treatment for economic production, is also described. The properties, strengthening mechanisms, and applications of these three steels are examined.

The paper examines the consequences of dam building with slime of high water content, and therefore Iow relative density, such as the tailings usually associated with the extraction of uranium. It shows how a Iow relative density reduces the practical maximum rate of rise, and hence the establishment cost, of slimes dams built by conventional means. Further hidden costs of such tailings dams are examined. It is concluded that dewatering of tailings before their disposal is the most cost-effective means of increasing the rate at which a particular dam can be constructed, or of reducing operating or stability problems on existing dams. In the longer term, underground disposal seems to be a feasible alternative. However, it is pointed out that there are other factors that can compound the operating difficulties, and that these should be investigated before remedial steps are taken.

The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

Brown gave the welcoming address. These techniques provide help by detecting rogue values of a control variable and changes in the underlying mean of that variable respectively. This paper describes a new technique for identifying changes in the trend of a control variable, particularly when that variable is subject to large inherent variance.

Underground transport and communication in collieries was the theme selected for the 1983 mining school conducted by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The response from the industry was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged, and a total of 222 delegates attended. The First International Symposium on Seismicity in Mines, organized by the South African National Group on Rock Mechanics in collaboration with the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in Randburg (near Johannesburg) from 13th to 17th September, 1982. It was the first attempt to provide an international forum for the consideration of seismic problems specifically affecting mines or associated with mining. Numerical mathematics The South African Society for Numerical Mathematics and the Computer Science Department of the University of Natal are organizing the Ninth Symposium on Numerical Mathematics to be held in Durban from 18th to 20th July, 1983.
