Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

Members are advised that the Council has decided to change the format of the Journal from the present size to the standard international A4 size with effect from August, 1969. By making this change we will be conforming to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Institutes. While making these changes, the opportunity is taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Council trusts that these changes will meet with the approval of members.

In situ complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens by W. L. VAN HEERDEN, B.Sc. Hons. (Pret.) (Visitor) The significance of ;n situ tests on large coal specimens is briefly reviewed. Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.

Book Review Gold Metallurgy in South Africa, edited by R. J. Adamson and published by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, Johannesburg, 1972. The metallurgical processes used for the recovery of gold from Witwatersrand ores were first described in A Text Book of Rand Metallurgical Practice, published in 1912 and subsequently revised in 1926. Guide To The Preparation Of Papers For Publication In The Journal Of The South African Institute Of Mining And Metallurgy The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the .Journal.

On 23rd October, 1969, 54 members of the Institute set out at an early hour from Rand Airport in two chartered Dakota aircraft for a visit to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam site. The weather was at the start rather unpromising but after passing Bloemfontein the overcast cleared and it turned into a glorious day for a most memorable visit. The Institute is indebted to U.C-Dumez-Borie Dams Limited, the main civil engineering contractors, and Mr J. D. McNamara their executive manager, for the very excellent arrangements made for this excursion. From the time the aircraft landed till a slightly belated departure the organisation of the extensive tours arranged for the parties was quite outstanding and a matter for congratulation to all concerned. At each of the many places visited there was a senior official to give an authoritative and comprehensive description of the work under his control. In addition the guides on the buses, loaned by the Department of Water Affairs, kept up an interesting running commentary throughout the day. A further much appreciated facet was the introduction of many of the experts on the site and a brief talk by each after an excellent lunch served at the recreation club. Each visitor also received a brochure with a progress report and a detailed site plan, with various sections highlighted in colour, and obviously prepared at the cost of much time and effort. The visit included tours of the large dolerite quarry, where some 150 000 tons of rock are removed each month, the 42 in. gyratory primary crusher, the secondary crushing and screening plant, the rod mill plant for sand production, and the automated blending and concrete batching plant. The transport of mixed concrete by 'silobuses' to the 6 cu. yd buckets of four Blondin cableways, two of which are radially movable and two with buffing towers, and the placing of the concrete in the huge blocks of the wall was watched from a vantage point. The most interesting part of the visit was without a doubt the inspection of the wall itself and the explanations of the many intricasies of its design and care in construction, covering aspects such as positioning of galleys, interlocking of blocks, reinforcement, refrigeration, actual concrete placing, subsequent grouting, etc. Other points of interest were the very complicated design of the wall itself, the river diversion plans, with three stages of coffer dams, the spillways, and the very well cut penstock tunnels.

British Mining Fields, by J. E. Metcalf. Published by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, 1969. Price 50s. (Students, 30s.). A 100 years or so ago Britain's mining industry led the world in the production of coal and base metals. Although she still maintains a sizeable-and, under the circumstances, remarkably progressive-coal mining industry, her production of most other base minerals has long since been dwarfed by mining fields in the Americas Africa, Australia and the U.S.S.R. Nevertheless the story of mining in Britain is of wider interest than the present scale of operations there might suggest, if only because the domestic British mining industry has in terms of finance, technology and manpower been the fons et origo of many highly productive mining fields outside Britain, including the Witwatersrand goldfields. British Mining Fields was published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to give delegates attending the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Conference a succinct account of mining in Britain. The main emphasis is on underground mining of base minerals-treated regionally-with separate chapters on coal and gypsum. The author strikes an admirable balance between historical aspects, geological origin and environment of ore deposits, mining methods and economic factors, and provides a few key references for those who wish to make deeper studies. This is exactly the sort of booklet one often wishes were available on South African mining.

The adsorption of gold from cyanide solutions onto constituents of the reef, and its role in reducing the efficiency of the gold-recovery process by M. R. URBAN. M.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) Rand (Visitor). JILL URBAN. B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) Rand (Visitor) and P. J. D. LLOYD. Ph.D. (Cape Town) (Fellow) Evidence for the adsorption or re-precipitation of gold from cyanide solutions onto gangue minerals of the Witwatersrand reefs has been gathered over a number of years by various investigators. The evidence from tests using radioactive tracers is conclusive and indicates thlt adsorption contributes about 0,1 g/t to the total gold loss from conventional reduction works. The loss is a function of the alkalinity and cyanide concentration of the solution, and it appears to be affected by the extent of time between milling and cyanidation. The heavy minerals appear to be the strongest adsorbers, and the clay minerals somewhat less strong adsorbers. A sensitive qualitative test based on thin-layer chromatography permits the extent of adsorption and desorption to be readily determined.

Trackless mining at the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited by C. F. HEWS* (Visitor) An account is given of the evolution and advantages of trackless equipment in the underground operations of International Nickel's Ontario Division, with special reference to fill-method mining, development practice, sublevel caving, and induced block caving. Details of maintenance, environmental control, and operator training are also given.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. The problem of heat stress underground in the gold mines is approached on the basis of the heat transfer between the human body and the underground environment. Experimental measurements of radiant and convective heat transfer and a theoretical calculation of maximum evaporative heat transfer enable the maximum cooling power of an environment to be calculated in terms of the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature, the mean radiant temperature, the wind speed and the barometric pressure. For most underground applications the cooling power can be expressed as a function of wet-bulb temperature and wind speed only. The relative importance of wind speed and wet-bulb temperature can be assessed: in working places where wind speed is low additional cooling of workmen can be achieved better by increased wind speed than by decreased wet-bulb temperature. The wet kata reading proves to be of limited value as an index of heat stress because environments with equal wet kata do not necessarily have the same cooling power. Finally, thermal equilibrium with the environment is possible when cooling power equals or exceeds the rate of metabolic heat generation. The rates of metabolic heat generation for various underground tasks are indicated.

Already about one-third of South Africa's coal is mined at depths exceeding 100 metres. Almost all this mining is done by the bord and pillar method. Conventional design procedures call for ever larger pillars as depths of workings increase, resulting in the loss of large amounts of coal and reductions in productivity. Barrier pillars are in general use to ensure against large collapses. The presence of these strong pillars would allow a more efficient design of the bord and pillar layout to yield improved extraction ratios by using smaller, yielding, pillars between the bords. Knowledge of the complete load- displacement curves for such pillars is a prerequisite for the design of such a system. A 100-MN, stiff jacking system for measuring the complete load-displacement curves of pillars with cross-sections of up to 2 m X 2 m is described. The jacks are installed in a slot cut across the central plane of symmetry of a pillar, thereby ensuring that the stress distribution in the pillar during a test, especially at its contacts with the roof and floor, is identical to that caused in a similar pillar by convergence across the seam. Preliminary results in the form of complete load-displacement curves for test pillars of about 1.5 metre square section are given.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,400. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Members shall be not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They shall be practising their profession at the time of application. Entrance fee R4.00; Annual subscription R14.00 (town), R12.00 (country). Letters of designation: M.S.A.INST.M.M. Associate Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R2.00; Annual subscription R12.00 (town), R10.00(country). Letters of designation: A.M.S.INST.M.M. Affiliates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Affiliate, is at the time of his application, already a Student member, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Affiliates. Entrance fee R2.00; Annual subscription R12.00 (town), R10.00(country). Graduate Members shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R1.00; Annual subscription R7.00 (town), R6.00 (country). Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. The Council has the power to elect to the grade of Member or Associate Member candidates who may not fulfil all the requirements for entrance to these grades but whose status, professional achievements and practical experience in mining or metallurgy justify such election. A study of the response of South African white gold miners to exposure to dust in their working environment yielded large quantities of dust data. Analysis of this data (presented in summarized form) reveals a variety of interesting relationships, including the shift-long exposure of different occupational groups, the dust levels due to various mining operations, relationships between different dust-measuring procedures and time trends in dust levels during the shift. The statistical probability of contracting silicosis at various levels of exposure to this dust is reported briefly. A new method of using microscope counts to estimate the respirable mass of dust samples is given in an appendix.

Are there any further matters to raise under the heading of General? If not, we will proceed to the next item on the agenda which is the presentation of tonight's paper. 5. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Vice-President: "Professor Starfield may I call on you to deliver the paper entitled "A rapid method of calculating temperature increases along mine airways". After the presentation of the paper, the Vice-President said: The Vice-President: "Thank you very much, Professor Starfield. Gentlemen, I think that many of you here, who have to do with the design of mines in an age where costs and difficulties generally, are increasing at a rate which we find almost impossible to keep up with, I would agree with you that we are fortunate to have a band of people like Professor Starfield, and others who are dedicated to producing the tools, and methods which we need to sort out these problems. I am sure that you would agree with me, that the old rule-of-thumb methods are finished forever, that we can never go back to the methods which served us in the past, when we were close to the surface and had not met the conditions which we are meeting now, and which we are going to meet in an increasing degree in the future. It is to people like Professor Starfield, with these clear, completely logically described new methods, that we look for the solution of our problems in the future. I think the whole problem of layout of any mine, is one where you can reliably prognosticate what you are likely to find in a variety of circumstances to meet the wide range of things which must happen when you consider the costs in these modern operations. Thank you very much, Professor Starfield, for coming and giving us this paper. Thank you for making plain to me how these mathematical models of yours are used. I am sure that what you have said will be a very valuable addition to the archives of this Institution. The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Fellows shall not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They shall be practising their profession at the time of application. Entrance fee R10.00, Annual subscription RI7.00. Letters of designation: F.S.A.I.M.M. Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription RI5.00. Letters of designation: M.S.A.I.M.M. Associates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Associate, is at the time of his application, already a Student, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Associates. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription R15.00. Graduates shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R2.00, Annual subscription R10.00. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. Entrance fee nil; Annual subscription R3.00. Other. The Council has the power to elect to the grade of Fellow or Member, candidates who may not fulfil all the requirements for entrance to these grades but whose status, professional achievements and practical experience in mining or metallurgy justify such election. Die werk moet egter voldoen aan die standaarde deur SARPI neergele: dit Suid-Afrikaanse Road vir Professionele Ingenieurs DIE WET OP PROFESSIONELE INGENIEURS, 1968 (WET NO. 81 VAN 1968): JAARGELD: 1972/73 BOEKJAAR Kragtens die bepalings van Artikel 18(9) (b) van die Wet verval die Registrasie van 'n persoon wat as 'n ingenieur of ingenieur-in-opleiding geregistreer is as sodanige persoon versuim om die voorgeskrewe jaargeld binne ses maande nadat dit betaalbaar word, te betaal. Aandag word ook vriendelik daarop gevestig dat persone wat kragtens Artikel 18(4) (b) van die Wet geregistreer is (dit wil se persone wat nie oor 'n erkende akademiese kwalifikasie beskik nie) en wat toelaat dat hulle registrasie verval, moontlik nie weer vir registrasie in aanmerking sal kan kom nie. Vir persone in hierdie kategorie is dit dus van kardinale belang om toe te sien dat hulle jaargeld binne die voorgeskrewe tydperk betaal word.

A party of some 60 members of the Institute were welcomed at the Union Junction Works of Scaw Metals Limited on Thursday, 23rd January for a morning visit. Dr J. M. Bereza, the metallurgical Director, gave an informative introductory talk to the assembled visitors, which briefly covered the major activities of the Company. This was followed by refreshments, and the visitors were then allocated to 12 guides for the conducted tour of the Works. The progress of the Company is an impressive saga of the development of heavy industry in this country linked primarily to the expanding mining industry. Many other outlets are now available for Scaw products and the rapidly advancing techniques developed by their own chemists as well as the processes made available from overseas associates indicates the forward looking attitude of the Company. The visitors were impressed by the modern laboratory services, closely linked to rigid quality control, resulting in a high standard of final products. The most fascinating section to many of the visitors was the continuous casting machines and rolling mills recently installed, although the most lucrative section is the large steel foundry. After the tour the parties gathered in a marquee tent for liquid refreshments, followed by a lavish luncheon in the canteen. The visitors were officially welcomed by Mr Richard Boustred, the Deputy Managing Director, and Mr V. C. Robinson replied, thanking the Company on behalf of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Arrangements were made for golf in the afternoon at the Germiston Golf Club for those who wished to play. A.E.G.
