"Rock has been cut in the process of mining since before the invention of explosives. Today, we seek to return to cutting to reap the benefits of continuous operations for South African underground hard-rock mines, to improve speed of access to the orebody, and to improve the efficiency of mining operations.Development of new technology fits within a framework of engineering knowledge. By understanding the characteristics of the rock, the tools we use to cut it with, and the history of mining and rock cutting, we can see the genesis of the road-header, the longwall, and the continuous miner, all drag bit cutters. They have emerged as the solutions of choice for underground mining of softer materials such as coal and potash. In hard rock, the challenges are the forces required to break the rock, and the wear of the tools caused by the rock’s abrasiveness. Only disc cutters currently handle the challenges, and even then, often not economically. New materials like thermally stable diamond composite will help, as will combinations of mechanical cutters and other methods such as high-pressure water or high temperatures.It is not clear what will emerge as the consensus technique for hardrock cutting. Experience teaches that development is expensive and the market is small. Will mining companies partner with equipment developers to make the technological leap? Or will the solution come from a systems approach, not considered here?IntroductionBlasting is the dominant method of breaking rock for the purposes of mining. When used underground, blasting is part of a batch process. If rock can be cut rather than blasted, mining can become continuous, leading to process and efficiency improvements.Coal produced from underground mines is now predominantly excavated using mechanical means, but underground hard rock is still broken primarily by explosives.This paper traces the history of rock cutting, reviews the main physical processes that are or could be used, and comments on the future. It is written from the perspective of narrow-stope hard-rock mining typical of South African gold and platinum mines."

An investigation into the use of impinging stream (jet) reactors for the leaching of a free milling ore produced an increase in gold recovery by 10% while decreasing leaching time by up to 90%.Tests on refractory ores demonstrate no apparent improvement in recovery. However, leaching kinetics are dramatically increased when these ores are subjected to jet reaction prior to agitation.

Rock fall accidents continue to be the main cause of fatal and serious injuries in the mining industry. Although there has been an improvement in the FOG (falls of ground) related fatal and serious injuries over the past few years, the rate is still too high. New technology has made it possible to reduce this rate significantly. FOG accidents imply failure of the support system or the design of the support system in use. In this paper we deal with the latest technology available to assist the mines to reduce the rates of FOG related injuries and fatalities.

"Despite the recognized influence of product fineness on line capacity and downstream process performance, few mineral concentrators today use particle size measurement of the final product in automatic control applications for particle size. ‘Near-line’ particle size instrumentation has existed for decades and is utilized in modern concentrators, but low availability and measurement frequency, due to problems with slurry sampling and transport systems, make these technologies unreliable for use in automatic control. An innovative technology for real-time particle size measurement on individual hydrocyclones, named CYCLONEtrac™ PST (particle size tracking), has been developed by CiDRA Minerals Processing, and proven in commercial installations, demonstrating near 100% availability with minimal maintenance requirements, thus overcoming the limitations of previous technologies. Potential stakeholders require convincing, reliable information regarding the economic value delivered by automatic grind control projects. In this paper we present a methodology for estimating such value with the CYCLONEtrac™ PST technology, and demonstrate unique opportunities to improve process stability and performance. Based on actual plant data accumulated over time, the evaluation approach assesses and highlights the significant potential process improvement that can be expected with the particle size tracking technology. As an extension of previous work, in this paper we present the key operating criteria for optimizing the production of valuable metals and increase mill throughput by identifying the optimal grind size. As this requires operating closer to the process boundaries, accurate real-time particle size measurements, such as those provided by the CYCLONEtrac™ PST system, become essential for achieving the maximum potential value from every operation. For further illustration, data from three different copper plants is compared.Introduction Owners and operators of mineral concentrators constantly search for the most economically attractive way to increase the output of valuable metal. A logical approach is to identify a key parameter that has the greatest impact on the performance of multiple stages of the process and then use a holistic analysis methodology to determine how this key parameter can be controlled to optimize the final output.Particle size is widely recognized as such a key parameter; however, very few concentrators today use real-time particle size measurements for automatic control of the final product size due, to a large extent, to the inherent limitations of existing technologies. ‘Near-line’ particle size measurement instrumentation, which has been used for decades, typically suffers from low availability because the fundamental measurement technologies were developed for other, less demanding industries and then adapted to the harsh environment of the typical mineral concentration process. An outline of the key differences among the available technologies used for particle size measurement in comminution circuits has been completed in previous work, and plant data has proven the benefits of measurements on individual cyclones – something that, until now, has not been possible (Cirulis, 2017)."

The objective of this paper is to describe the research followed in creating a generalized, readiness assessment tool for mining projects. We start by highlighting the need for the assessment tool and then progress towards explaining the methodology followed during the study. The selection and finalization of the list of elements, sections, and categories that make up the unweighted values are described, followed by a summary of the weighting process applied. The outcome of this process is a weighted readiness assessment tool for mining project studies. The main benefits of the tool are that it will guide decision-makers and project managers through the definition phases of the project and improve the likelihood of project success.

The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

Unexpected equipment failures lead to financial losses due to production disruption. Time-based maintenance, based on checks over regular time periods, has been employed to minimise disruption. However, the improvements it can offer are limited as it may lead to unnecessary service of healthy equipment or missed failures occurring between service intervals. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) provides a further improvement to equipment reliability by detecting faults and predicting remaining useful life (RUL) based on equipment health monitoring. Its application in the mineral processing industry is hindered due to the high cost of health monitoring equipment. In this study, two stochastic process models, the adaptive auto-regressive model and the gamma process, are compared in their ability to forecast the degradation state and to provide RUL prediction. The gamma process model was found to be effective in both tasks. Due to its simplicity and minimum hyperparameters requirements, it is proposed to use the gamma process as a baseline for comparison with other models. The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. An improved control system for electrical demand management is proposed. The system is designed to provide more effective load scheduling and control strategies by means of a computer aided demand management system (CADMS). The objective of the CADMS is to provide a responsive computational aid and adaptive control system for effective demand management. The system consists of a short term load forecasting module, an interactive load scheduling module, an incentive based electricity cost allocation module and a power management information module.

The plans Include the provisions that are to be made to allow for climatic conditions, land use, vegetation and wildlife, surface-water resources, geology and ground water, soils, land capability, rehabilitation method, location of discard dumps and slurry ponds, pollution control, and costs. . . Monitoring of the operation is the only way that the rehabilitation plan can be improved, and both monitoring and planning are essential when provision is being made for the closure of a mine.

In this paper we develop a physics-based model for lining erosion in steel ladles. The model predicts the temperature evolution in the liquid slag, steel, refractory bricks, and outer steel shell of the ladle. The flow of slag and steel is due to forced convection induced by inert gas injection, vacuum treatment (extreme bubble expansion), natural convection, and waves caused by the gas stirring. The lining erosion takes place by dissolution of refractory elements into the steel or slag. The mass and heat transfer coefficients inside the ladle during gas stirring are modelled based on wall functions which take the distribution of wall shear velocities as a critical input. The wall shear velocities are obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a sample of scenarios, spanning out the operational space, and a model is developed using curve fitting. The model is capable of reproducing both thermal and erosion evolution well. Deviations between model predictions and industrial data are discussed. The model is fast and has been tested successfully in a ‘semi-online’ application. The model source code is available to the public at [https://github.com/SINTEF/refractorywear].

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. "This article describes the re-engineering principles applied in the design of a personnel transportation system for the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine in the Rustenburg area of South Africa. It incorporates conveyor belt travelling, chairlift operation, and also includes consideration of proposed changes/modifications to the existing conveyor belt infrastructure.The purpose of the project was to identify, through a process of evaluation, the appropriate option and/or combination of transportation options that would be safe in terms of personnel transportation as well as cost-effective. Alternative measures for transporting personnel (not using belt riding) would have a significant positive spin-off, increasing the availability of the belt and thereby increasing production. This paper explores the feasibility of interventions that would improve safety through eliminating risk associated with personnel transportation as well as contributing towards improving the mine’s position on the cost curve.The design in consideration at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine consists of two shaft systems, namely the North Shaft and South Shaft, each comprising twin decline shafts. One of the decline shafts is equipped with a conveyor belt for rock and personnel transportation, and the other with a winder for trackbound material transport. The conveyor belt has been used for personnel transportation since the commissioning of the shafts. The conveyor belt is equipped with platforms for personnel getting off and on the belt and a number of safety devices designed to ensure safety while travelling on the belt. Intensive training in the practical aspects of belt riding is given to every person, and unsupervised riding on the belt is permitted only once belt riding competence is demonstrated. Despite this, the safety results were poor, with 106 injuries between 2006 and May 2013. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during this period.An investigation of alternative means for personnel transportation or engineered solutions to the current conveyor belt infrastructure in the safest, most effective, and most economical way was therefore needed. There was a major risk of safety-related stoppages being imposed following another belt accident/incident. This would prevent the mine from transporting personnel underground by belt and result in major production losses. From the commissioning of the Phase 2 shaft deepening project on both shafts, dedicated chairlifts have been used for personnel transportation as opposed to the conveyor belt installed in the Phase 1 area. The chairlifts have been in operation since 2004 and no chairlift-related incidents have been recorded thus far. According to safety statistics, it is clear that the chairlift is the safer method for the transportation of people in the shaft.To fulfil the objectives/scope of this study, it was recommended that both primary (new chairlift decline with infrastructure) and secondary options (modifications to the current conveyor belt infrastructure) be considered for implementation on both the North Shaft and South Shaft to reduce or eliminate accidents/incidents as a result of belt transportation. The associated capital expenditure would be approximately R200 million. Considering the future impact on the business as a whole, this would definitely be capital well spent."

The Principality of Asturias is a region situated in Northern Spain with two centuries of tradition in underground coal mining. In addition, its uneven relief has obliged the construction of a great number of tunnels both for railways and roads. Basing on this experience and an ever increasing need to improve on safety, the Barredo Foundation dependent on the Regional Government and the University, provides and manages a Centre for Research of Fires and Ventilation in Tunnels. The Centre has as its most important infrastructure, a tunnel 540 m long, 9,5 m wide and 8,0 m high at centre. This section coupled with ventilation equipment allows the simulation of risk conditions at real scale, which is achieved by modifying the geometry of the section and through two powerful stations situated one at either en of the tunnel. In addition, the Centre houses two test benches for fans and electrical motors at high temperatures. One bench with a re-circulation conduit is the most appropriate for tests in Transversal and Semi-transversal type of installations. The other, is for the testing of electrical motors or fans which operate in zones where the surrounding temperature is high. In this Centre, training has also been developed for Fire Fighters and Civilian Protection Personnel who have to work in fire and smoke rescue conditions in underground structures. Testing conducted at real scale enables this formation and also to improve different computer programmes in the field of Fires and Ventilation.

The objective of this study is to improve the shrinking core model for particles with a particle size distribution and clarify the activation mechanism of rare earth elements dissolution by mechanochemical activation. To achieve this objective, the method, called the doubly integrated micromodel, was applied for a shrinking core model in this study. This method consists of integrating the batch leaching rate of a single particle over the distribution of both feed particle size and reactor residence time to arrive at the fraction unleached. The usefulness of the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel was confirmed by comparing it with a shrinking core model. To apply the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel to rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores by mechanochemical activation, leaching experiments were performed for grinding samples by planetary ball milling. The reaction equation of mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling for weathered residual rare earth ores was investigated by x-ray absorption fine structure analysis. As a result of a kinetics study, the rate-determining process of leaching changed from reaction to diffusion reaction control by planetary ball milling. Based on these results, it was revealed that the main mechanism of activated rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores was a mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling.
