This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

Over the past few decades the commercial application of heap bioleaching technology for the extraction of base metals has become increasingly important, due mainly to the depletion of high-grade ore reserves. Heap bioleaching is widely used for the extraction of copper from secondary copper sulphide ores. The design and engineering aspects of the process have received considerable attention, but issues related to the microbiology of the process have been subjected to less rigorous scrutiny. The major role of micro-organisms in bioleaching processes is to catalyse the regeneration of ferric iron and protons, from ferrous iron and by sulphur oxidation respectively. It is accepted that even the most carefully engineered heaps are heterogeneous in terms of temperature, pH, the presence of anaerobic pockets, irrigation efficiency, and dissolved solutes. Since interactions between solution chemistry, mineralogy, and microbial populations exist in heaps, a better understanding of the correlation between microbial numbers and types with changes in these chemical and physical profiles with time would be beneficial during process design and operation of heaps, and could result in faster start-up times and higher metal recoveries. This paper reviews the role of microbiology in heap bioleaching processes. Aspects such as microbial diversity, identification and monitoring of cultures, inoculation strategies, colonization behaviour, and tolerance to metals and salts are discussed, and the potential contribution of the knowledge to the improvement of the operation and design of heap bioleach processes assessed. Conclusions are drawn with respect to the role of genetic engineering, heap inoculation practises, and remaining areas for future heap bioleaching research and development.

A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. Defect solid state A one-day multidisciplinary symposium entitled 'The Defect Solid State '80' will be held under the auspices of the Solid State Physics and Materials Science Subcommittee of the South African Institute of Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand on Monday, 14th July, 1980, following the Twenty-fifth Annual Conference of the South African Institute of Physics.

This paper focuses on the application of ion exchange technology for the recovery of copper from a leach solution originating from a heap bioleach in which base metals are leached from a low-grade ore that bears platinum group metals. Screening tests indicated that Dow XUS43605 has high selectivity for copper over the other metals in the solution, namely nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and aluminium. Batch adsorption kinetic experiments showed that copper adsorption equilibrium is attained at a fast rate. The kinetics of adsorption increased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C due to the decrease in solution viscosity and the subsequent improved intra-particle mass diffusion. Single-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted to the batch copper adsorption equilibrium data, and a maximum copper capacity of 26 g/l was observed for Dow XUS43605. The effects of flow rate, temperature, pH, and initial metal concentration on the dynamic recovery of copper were investigated in fixed-bed columns, and it was determined that temperature and flow rate had the most significant impacts on the loading of copper on the resin at copper breakthrough. A 36% increase in copper loading at breakthrough was observed when the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Finally, it was determined that a split elution is possible by using different concentrations of H2S04 to first elute co-loaded nickel from the resin, followed by the elution of copper.

This paper describes a model that can simulate the behaviour of a pneumatic intensifier that is generally referred to as an ?air pump? (AP). The AP is used in many South African underground mines, and utilizes compressed air with pressures between 0.3?0.6 MPa to pump water up to pressures of 12?18 MPa. The high pressure water is used in numerous underground mines to pressurize props and roof bolts that act as safety and roof support devices. The simulation model reproduces the intensifier's operation under various conditions and therefore can be used to investigate the AP's sensitivity towards environmental conditions, design parameters (such as spring stiffness, plunger diameter, nozzle diameter etc.) and operating conditions. Model validation by comparison with laboratory experiments showed good correlation. The model can subsequently be used to investigate design changes aimed at improving the AP's performance and reliability over a wider range of operating conditions.

"Gravitational sedimentation of suspensions in various precipitation processes is hindered by colloidal stability. This is due to the high surface charge of the suspension and results in strong attraction/interaction between the ions on the particle surface and counter-ions in solution. Moreover, this strong interaction results in a charge build-up that renders the suspension stable. In order to induce gravitational sedimentation of these particles, a redistribution of ions close to the particle surface is required. We therefore sought to redistribute ions close to the particle surface by applying a magnetic field. This results in the reduction of interparticle electrostatic repulsive forces and a subsequent increase in the zeta potential of a suspension. For the purpose of this study, a copper sulphide suspension was used. Copper sulphide particles were exposed to a range of field strengths for set exposure times and their zeta potential was measured before and after exposure. All particles had an initial zeta potential value equal to or less than –40 mV prior to magnetic field exposure. A significant increase in zeta potential was observed, with values reaching a maximum of –16.5 mV when exposed to a 2 T field strength for 40 minutes. This is due to Lorentz ion shifts resulting from the Lorentz force exerted by the magnetic field on the particle surface. IntroductionMetal sulphide precipitation is a process for treating industrial waste streams with high residual concentration of mixed metal ions and acid mine drainage. This process has been reported to achieve higher metal removal compared with the industrially prevalent lime precipitation, due to the sparingly soluble nature of the metal sulphide precipitates formed. However, precipitation is governed by high levels of supersaturation which favour the formation of fine particles (Lewis, 2010). Consequently, some of the metal sulphide fines formed exhibit slow settling dynamics and thus tend to remain suspended in solution."

Biological sulfate reduction has become a successful treatment alternative for acid mine drainage and Mintek is developing biological processes for treatment of highsulfate mine waters. Treatment of these high-sulfate waters is achieved by sulfatereducing bacteria that reduce sulfate to produce sulfide as a product, in the form of H2S and HS− at neutral pH. This introduces the opportunity to apply treated effluents from biological treatment processes for the recovery of metals, such as copper, from metallurgical waste streams. This study models the kinetics of copper sulfide precipitation from a complex bioleach liquor. The results indicated a rapid rate of reaction and the formation of covellite, suggesting the potential to use biogenic sulfide to recover copper as a metal sulfide product.

WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

INTERNATIONAL SOLVENT EXTRACTION CONFERENCE, 1971 The Society of Chemical Industry has agreed to sponsor an International Conference devoted to the science and technology of solvent extraction. This will be held in The Hague in the Netherlands during the week commencing 19th April, 1971. The organisation of the Conference will be in the hands of a Conference Committee under the chairmanship of Mr B. F. Warner. The emphasis of the Conference will be on technical solvent extraction of both inorganic and organic substances, including basic principles and practical applications. Sessions are envisaged covering the chemistry of solvent extraction, industrial processes and economics, the performance of contacting equipment and the underlying phenomena involved, and the response characteristics and control of such units. The Conference Committee will welcome offers of papers for presentation at the Conference. In the firts instance, intending authors should submit a preliminary title and an indication of the scope of their contribution to the Conference Secretary: Dr. C. SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tonnes) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP Geotechnical and Survey Departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel Slope Stability Radar System (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

An evaluation was made of the wear and performance characteristics of liter bars, and the cost-life effectiveness of backing materials for rotary-mil liners. In a large run-of-mine mil in which the liter bars were mounted on grid liners of austenitic manganese steel (AMS), the liners had an average life that was five to six times that of equivalent unprotected liners. For a single mil, this is equivalent to annual savings in the cost of materials of up to R320 000, and to a downtime of 100 hours. Of the five materials tested in a large pebble mil grinding quartzitic ore, AMS grids and 'white iron' blocks performed best on a cost-life basis, with possibly improved performance from a real white cast iron. (The 'white iron' was shown by microstructural analysis to contain flake raphite and pearlite, being in reality a grey cast iron.) The high-chromium white iron had by far the longest predicted life, with mild steel a surprising second. Rubber was shown to last well in this type of mil. The wear rates of liners change during their lifetimes. The protective effect of liter bars was clearly illustrated by the reduction of over 40 per cent in the wear rates of the liners when the lifter bars were renewed to a height of 80 mm from a fully worn height of 35 mm.

"Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy.Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.1. IntroductionDiffraction of X-rays by matter has been used for more than 80 years, initially to elucidate the structure of crystalline matter, and to investigate the bonding between atoms. The first development of powder diffraction cameras and the later development of X-ray diffractometers saw the development of methods to identify phases and to try to quantify them in mixtures. A comprehensive database and search-match techniques have been developed over the ensuing years. Effective and accurate quantification had to wait for the so-called Rietveld' analysis where the total diffraction pattern is used and where the crystal structure data for the constituent phases are needed as input. Overlapping of diffraction peaks of different phases is handled without difficulty and reliable results can be obtained in spite of this occurrence.The development of methods for structure analysis from powder data has also progressed rapidly and more and more complex structures are being solved from first principles, i.e. without knowledge of unit cell or space group data. Because of the ease of use of the Rietveld method, it is finding increased application in metallurgy, especially in the quantification of phases of importance in minerals processing, in pyrometallurgical processes, and in materials characterization. This study will examine the principles of the Rietveld method, its application in metallurgy, and finally also the common pitfalls that need to be avoided.2. Rietve1d AnalysisAs the Rietveld method compares the experimental diffraction pattern with one calculated from known crystal structure data, the following data are needed:•,An XRD Pattern with as Iowa background as possible. This should have good resolution and high diffraction peak intensities. With modem X-ray detectors, this can be achieved in minutes rather than hours.•,Instrumental parameters such as goniometer radii and slit sizes are needed. These are the so-called ""Fundamental parameters"". They are used to calculate the shapes of the resultant diffraction peak profiles that are caused by the instrument. The parameters are used to correctly separate the instrumental effects on the diffraction pattern from the sample effects."

Thirty-one years ago, African leaders met in Lagos for the drafting of the Lagos Plan of Action for the Economic Development of Africa, 1980?2000. The main objective of the plan was to increase Africa?s self-sufficiency and in this regard, the plan had a section pertaining specifically to redressing the ills of an unproductive mining and minerals industry and harnessing its potential for socio-economic development. However, if we look at the nature of this sector on the continent today, its characteristics resemble the diagnosis of the sector given in the plan back in 1980: lack of information on endowments of minerals; lack of value added in the sector; low development and use of those endowments that are not of interest to transnational corporations (TNCs); and most importantly, low contribution to socio-economic development. The primary consequence of the lack of visible benefits to African states, despite growth and development of the sector in terms of increased mining activity led by Foreign Direct Investment is that countries with mining industries are characterized by dysfunctional internal processes. Improvements in governance, monitored with indices such as those set out in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the Millennium Development Goals, and other such ?good governance? agendas, are being asserted. However, before we prescribe the introduction of initiatives or guidelines based upon highly subjective norms which we believe to fit this diagnosis, it is necessary to review how it is that we got to this situation that we are in today. How is it that, 31 years after the Lagos Plan of Action, we have not seen any major changes in the role the industry can play in socio-economic development, despite the vast increase in mining activity on the continent?

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

Discussion Dr R. E. Robinson (Fellow): The author must be congratulated on a very meticulous and self-contained piece of work. It is indeed a pleasure to read a paper that is so clearly and systematically laid out, and where the conclusions and the testwork conducted have been so clearly described. The paper is complete in itself, which makes it very difficult for someone who is not intimately involved in the whole Torco project to make any comments on its content. However, two points that, strictly speaking, fall outside the scope of the paper are of considerable interest. The first relates to the particle size of the material treated. In the paper, the testwork is confined to one standard particle size (minus 60 plus 100 mesh). The essential feature of the paper is to indicate that the rate-controlling reaction in the whole segregation process is the rate of reaction of the ore particles with the reducing agent and the hydrogen chloride. One wonders, therefore, to what extent this relatively slow rate of reaction is affected by the particle size of the ore itself. One imagines that the reaction must take place by contact of the hydrogen chloride with the surface of the mineral particles, and it is reasonable to suspect that the rate of diffusion of the copper ions to the surface is a relatively slow process and is thus the limiting factor in this particular rate of reaction. It is possible, for example, that the improvement obtained, when the ore is subjected to reducing conditions before the chlorination, is due to a breakdown in the crystal structure of the original particle. This breakdown is brought about by the reduction and by the consequent increase in surface area available for reaction with hydrogen chloride. Can the author indicate whether any work has been done along these lines, and whether it has been established that the reaction depends on the surface area available? The second point relates to the application of this kinetic study to the actual operation of a Torco reactor. It was once planned to feed the sodium chloride, together with the reducing agent, into the top of the segregation chamber. In the paper, the author mentions that it has now been established that the segregation chamber behaves, to all intents and purposes, as a fluidized bed, and that there is, therefore, a rapid evolution of gas in the lower regions of the chamber, which, it is imagined, displaces the gas phase rapidly. Since the reaction between sodium chloride, water vapour, and the aluminium silicates in the ore is extremely rapid, one wonders how much of the hydrogen chloride produced is removed from the reaction zone before it has had time to react with the copper minerals. The extremely low consumption of sodium chloride (which is a vital feature of the Torco process) must depend on an extremely rapid circulation of the hydrogen chloride gas to all the ore particles in the segregation chamber. One wonders, therefore, if a system for the introduction of the sodium chloride into the bottom regions of the chamber might not result in even greater efficiency in the utilization of sodium chloride. ProC D. D. Howat (Fellow): All of us who have been concerned with the study of chemical reactions at high temperatures are keenly interested in kinetics and are well aware that this is not an easy study experimentally. Dr. Brittan is to be congratulated on the development of neat experimental methods and for his full discussion of the results obtained. Although the segregation process for the extraction of copper from oxide and silicate ores has been known for almost fifty years, the fundamental chemical and physical changes involved have been little understood and the fundamental data are very scanty. The work now in progress at A.A.R.L., together with that sponsored by the Anglo American Corporation in other research institutions throughout the world, is bound to produce new fundamental data and a much more complete understanding of this rather fascinating process. It is already apparent that some of the old and well-worn chemical reactions that were postulated to occur, just cannot take place in the way which was formerly accepted. Dr Brittan's work, carefully conducted and thoroughly analyzed as it has been, still leaves us with one great outstanding problem. The thermodynamic data and the possible reactions set out in Table I (page 281) of his paper leave us asking, in complete despair, how can copper be converted into a volatile chloride in the presence of HCl, CO and carbon at temperatures about 800°C? The thermodynamics all combine to show that copper should be reduced to metal as the first step in the process. This brings us right up against the second problem. If copper were reduced to the metal how would HCI convert it to the volatile chloride? On top of these problems is the unknown reason for the very high speed of reaction between CO, HCI and the ground copper ore. Still further into the region of the unknown is the reaction by which gaseous hydrochloric acid is produced in the actual process. Perhaps Dr Brittan is feeling grateful that he doesn't have to try to explain this reaction-at this stage of the research programme at least. The results very clearly show that both CO and HCl gas are essential for rapid production of the volatile copper chloride. Dr Brittan states that 18 minutes were required to attain 83 per cent extraction with HCl gas alone and this was reduced to 4 minutes when CO was

"This paper challenges the traditional notion that mine planners need to plan production so as to incur the lowest mining cost. For a given mine configuration, a mine that increases its mining rate will incur increased mining costs. In an environment in which operations are fixated on cost reduction, a proposal that increases costs will not be readily accepted. Such a proposal requires financial justification—the increase in costs might be recuperated by the additional production. This paper evaluates the net present value (NPV) across a range of copper prices for two underground orebodies located at different depths, using a production rate of 300 kt per quarter and a scenario that introduces additional equipment and costs for 450 kt per quarter. The evaluation was based on the changes of NPV for the orebody located at a shallow depth compared with the orebody at a greater depth. Discrete event simulation combined with mixed integer programming was used for analysis. Unlike traditional sensitivity analysis, this study re-optimizes the mine plan for each commodity price at each production rate. The results show that, for the low mining rate at the final copper price, an NPV of A$1530.64 million is achieved, whereas an NPV of A$1537.59 million is achieved at a higher mining rate. Even though pushing mining rates beyond traditional limits may increase mining costs, this option may be beneficial at certain commodity prices, particularly when prices are elevated. For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

"Analytical Chemistry is moving rapidly towards a concept where technicians have to do no more than press a button and print the result from an instrument that is a featureless ""black box"". In this environment we must ask how much traditional ''wet chemistry"" is still required for undergraduate students.Methods that can be fully automated will become increasingly important. An example of such a method is that of the slurry nebulisation and ICP-OES analysis of precious metal concentrate. Grinding the sample and adding Triton X100 as dispersant, complete analysis time is in the order of 90 min as apposed to the traditional Carius tube method which could take as long as 24 h. For most of the elements studied, the results using ""in-house"" reference material for calibration and as samples as well were within the 95% confidence level. Elements of low concentration in the sample (As, Bi and Se) were not within that level."
