Ph.D. (Cape Town) (Fellow) Evidence for the adsorption or re-precipitation of gold from cyanide solutions onto gangue minerals of the Witwatersrand reefs has been gathered over a number of years by various investigators. The evidence from tests using radioactive tracers is conclusive and indicates thlt adsorption contributes about 0,1 g/t to the total gold loss from conventional reduction works. The loss is a function of the alkalinity and cyanide concentration of the solution, and it appears to be affected by the extent of time between milling and cyanidation. The heavy minerals appear to be the strongest adsorbers, and the clay minerals somewhat less strong adsorbers. A sensitive qualitative test based on thin-layer chromatography permits the extent of adsorption and desorption to be readily determined.

Trackless mining at the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited by C. F. HEWS* (Visitor) An account is given of the evolution and advantages of trackless equipment in the underground operations of International Nickel's Ontario Division, with special reference to fill-method mining, development practice, sublevel caving, and induced block caving. Details of maintenance, environmental control, and operator training are also given.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. The problem of heat stress underground in the gold mines is approached on the basis of the heat transfer between the human body and the underground environment. Experimental measurements of radiant and convective heat transfer and a theoretical calculation of maximum evaporative heat transfer enable the maximum cooling power of an environment to be calculated in terms of the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature, the mean radiant temperature, the wind speed and the barometric pressure. For most underground applications the cooling power can be expressed as a function of wet-bulb temperature and wind speed only. The relative importance of wind speed and wet-bulb temperature can be assessed: in working places where wind speed is low additional cooling of workmen can be achieved better by increased wind speed than by decreased wet-bulb temperature. The wet kata reading proves to be of limited value as an index of heat stress because environments with equal wet kata do not necessarily have the same cooling power. Finally, thermal equilibrium with the environment is possible when cooling power equals or exceeds the rate of metabolic heat generation. The rates of metabolic heat generation for various underground tasks are indicated.

Already about one-third of South Africa's coal is mined at depths exceeding 100 metres. Almost all this mining is done by the bord and pillar method. Conventional design procedures call for ever larger pillars as depths of workings increase, resulting in the loss of large amounts of coal and reductions in productivity. Barrier pillars are in general use to ensure against large collapses. The presence of these strong pillars would allow a more efficient design of the bord and pillar layout to yield improved extraction ratios by using smaller, yielding, pillars between the bords. Knowledge of the complete load- displacement curves for such pillars is a prerequisite for the design of such a system. A 100-MN, stiff jacking system for measuring the complete load-displacement curves of pillars with cross-sections of up to 2 m X 2 m is described. The jacks are installed in a slot cut across the central plane of symmetry of a pillar, thereby ensuring that the stress distribution in the pillar during a test, especially at its contacts with the roof and floor, is identical to that caused in a similar pillar by convergence across the seam. Preliminary results in the form of complete load-displacement curves for test pillars of about 1.5 metre square section are given.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,400. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Members shall be not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. Associate Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R2.00; Annual subscription R12.00 (town), R10.00(country). Letters of designation: A.M.S.INST.M.M. Affiliates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Affiliate, is at the time of his application, already a Student member, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Affiliates. Entrance fee R2.00; Annual subscription R12.00 (town), R10.00(country). Graduate Members shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R1.00; Annual subscription R7.00 (town), R6.00 (country). Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. A study of the response of South African white gold miners to exposure to dust in their working environment yielded large quantities of dust data. Analysis of this data (presented in summarized form) reveals a variety of interesting relationships, including the shift-long exposure of different occupational groups, the dust levels due to various mining operations, relationships between different dust-measuring procedures and time trends in dust levels during the shift. The statistical probability of contracting silicosis at various levels of exposure to this dust is reported briefly. A new method of using microscope counts to estimate the respirable mass of dust samples is given in an appendix.

It is to people like Professor Starfield, with these clear, completely logically described new methods, that we look for the solution of our problems in the future. I think the whole problem of layout of any mine, is one where you can reliably prognosticate what you are likely to find in a variety of circumstances to meet the wide range of things which must happen when you consider the costs in these modern operations. Thank you very much, Professor Starfield, for coming and giving us this paper. Thank you for making plain to me how these mathematical models of yours are used. I am sure that what you have said will be a very valuable addition to the archives of this Institution. A party of some 60 members of the Institute were welcomed at the Union Junction Works of Scaw Metals Limited on Thursday, 23rd January for a morning visit. Dr J. M. Bereza, the metallurgical Director, gave an informative introductory talk to the assembled visitors, which briefly covered the major activities of the Company. This was followed by refreshments, and the visitors were then allocated to 12 guides for the conducted tour of the Works. The progress of the Company is an impressive saga of the development of heavy industry in this country linked primarily to the expanding mining industry. Many other outlets are now available for Scaw products and the rapidly advancing techniques developed by their own chemists as well as the processes made available from overseas associates indicates the forward looking attitude of the Company. The visitors were impressed by the modern laboratory services, closely linked to rigid quality control, resulting in a high standard of final products. The most fascinating section to many of the visitors was the continuous casting machines and rolling mills recently installed, although the most lucrative section is the large steel foundry. After the tour the parties gathered in a marquee tent for liquid refreshments, followed by a lavish luncheon in the canteen. The visitors were officially welcomed by Mr Richard Boustred, the Deputy Managing Director, and Mr V. C. Robinson replied, thanking the Company on behalf of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The Empress nickel/copper deposit west of Gatooma in Rhodesia occurs within gabbro and amphibolite, disposed at the contact of a granodiorite stock (Barebottom Hill) and the surrounding greenstones of the Archaen Bulawayan System. The orebody has a pipelike form and a poor surface expression due to plantation of the area by Miocene (Africa) and later Victoria Falls erosion cycles. Barebottom Hill represents a monadnock remnant in the geomorphological surfaces while traces of the once larger Empress orebody have been removed. Limitations in soil geochemistry necessitated both studies of the vegetation ecology and the biogeochemistry of the area, both of which were anomalous. The use of geobotany was found to be restricted but biogeochemistry offers a most effective prospecting tool and was found to define the sub-outcrop of the ore-body more precisely than soil geochemistry since these methods reflect and differentiate anomalies emanating from bedrock mineralisation and those due to surface phenomena.

INTERNATIONAL SOLVENT EXTRACTION CONFERENCE, 1971 The Society of Chemical Industry has agreed to sponsor an International Conference devoted to the science and technology of solvent extraction. This will be held in The Hague in the Netherlands during the week commencing 19th April, 1971. The organisation of the Conference will be in the hands of a Conference Committee under the chairmanship of Mr B. F. Warner. The emphasis of the Conference will be on technical solvent extraction of both inorganic and organic substances, including basic principles and practical applications. Sessions are envisaged covering the chemistry of solvent extraction, industrial processes and economics, the performance of contacting equipment and the underlying phenomena involved, and the response characteristics and control of such units. The Conference Committee will welcome offers of papers for presentation at the Conference. In the firts instance, intending authors should submit a preliminary title and an indication of the scope of their contribution to the Conference Secretary: Dr. C. SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. "In situ" measurements of the surface heat transfer coefficient in underground airways by K. R. VeST,* B.Se. (Glas.), M.Se. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Few "in situ" measurements have been made of the surface heat transfer coefficient in mine airways despite the importance of this coefficient in determining the heat flow into the ventilating air. In this paper, the values obtained at various air velocities and the comparisons of these values with theoretical values are given. Examples are also given ofthe errors which would result if rock surface temperatures were obtained by extrapolation from temperatures further into the rock without taking into account the time delay which occurs before a given change in air temperature reaches the points from which extrapolation is carried out.

New trends and developments in the production of ferro-silicon, ferro-manganese and ferro-chrome alloys are discussed, with emphasis on the general trend to the adoption of large production units. Problems which arise, both of a metallurgical and an electrical nature, due to the use of large electric furnaces, are outlined with specific reference to the limitations imposed by the power carrying capacity of Soderberg electrodes, the furnace resistance and the furnace reactance. The implications of combining high resistance within the furnace with good metallurgical operating conditions are illustrated by considering the production of ferro-silicon and ferro-manganese. The possibility of replacing electric furnaces used for ferro-manganese production, by large low shaft blast furnaces using oxygen enriched blast, is mentioned. The continued use of small electric arc furnaces for ferro-chrome production is also mentioned, and is ascribed to lack of ore suitable for treatment in large furnaces. Agglomeration of chromite ores appears to be a possible answer to this problem.

INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. SYNOPSIS A technique is described for measuring the change in volume in a borehole drilled in a rock mass subjected to stress and strain. It is shown that the volumetric strain or change in volume provides a practical estimate of the the stress in the rock.

P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Given by Mr J. K. E. DOUGLAS, M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand) SYNOPSIS Lime is the most widely used and the cheapest chemical alkali known to man and virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture. Its use goes back to the earliest days of man and many ancient buildings and writings bear testimony to this. The manufacture of lime involves quarrying, crushing and screening of limestone and the burning of the sized stone in kilns of which there are several types. The earliest kilns were of very crude design and only in comparatively recent times have large capacity, automated and scientifically controlled kilns been developed. The history of the South African lime industry is largely that of the three main lime companies and their story is briefly told. No other material used in industry has a greater diversity of uses or more varied functions and lime has applications in most South African industries. The main applications are in the production of gold and uranium, iron, steel and ferrochrome, carbide, sugar and paper and for water treatment, agriculture and building. The Republic is well endowed with high quality limestone and the conclusion is drawn that many other minerals will have been exhausted before we run out of limestone with which to process them. The expansion of the lime industry has in the past kept pace with the requirements of industry and the future demand is expected to grow in parallel with the growth of these industries. Since the war this growth has been phenomenal and with our expanding populations and abundance of raw materials it should continue in the years ahead. Limiting factors are the shortage of skilled labour and the distance from export markets. Confidence is expressed that the challenges of the future will be met and that the lime industry will continue to make an important contribution to the growth and prosperity of South Africa. INTRODUCTION Lime, gentlemen, is known to all of you. Like myself, most of you have undoubtedly found it to be, on the appropriate occasion, a most pleasant flavouring for gin. But this lime, or rather its juice, was in earlier days more than just a flavouring. In the days of sail it was vital to the health of sailors as a deterrant against the scourge of all sea-going men-scurvy. It thus played a small but important role in the opening-up of trade routes around the world on which was based the original wealth of many of today's more advanced nations. I propose to address you on the subject of lime this evening, not the citrus variety I have just mentioned, but the most widely-used and cheapest alkali known to man, which, largely unsung, plays an even more vital part in modern industry than did its namesake in the development of inter-continental trade. In the time at my disposal, I propose to tell you something of the history, geology and technology of lime manufacture. Then I will briefly sketch for you the development of this industry in South Africa and indicate the role it plays in supplying the requirements of many of our important industries. Finally we will attempt to look into the future. The importance of this chemical alkali to our modern civilization is seldom fully appreciated-virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture, either directly or indirectly. It is one of those basic materials, along with iron, coal, sulphur, salt and petroleum without which industry and, in fact, our modern way of living could not exist. Fortunately, nature has endowed the world with a plentiful supply of the limestone from which lime is derived and most countries have deposits adequate for their requirements. As a result, not only has there been little trade in lime products between countries but in the past the widespread occurrences of limestone have set a pattern of numerous small plants each serving a limited area. These plants were generally crude affairs incapable of producing a quality product. It is not surprising that, in an industry comprised of small producers with limited financial resources and in fierce competition with each other, there was little interchange of information. Technological development was therefore slow and the industry tended to be regarded as a backyard operation. Its popularity was not enhanced by the fact that lime is difficult and unpleasant to handle if proper facilities are not provided. In recent years the lime industry has undergone very radical changes to meet the more exacting requirements of today's more sophisticated consumers. Only since the war have the larger companies emerged with proper management, highly mechanized plants and a scientific approach. HISTORY Lime was one of the first chemical reagents used by man and consequently lime burning is one of the oldest of the chemical industries. The use of limestone dates back to the stone age when primitive man used limestone to build fireplaces, construct shelters and make crude tools and weapons. It is probable that lime was first discovered by him when the stone in these fireplaces disintegrated to a white powder which he could use for decorative purposes. The first recorded use of limestone was when huge blocks of limestone were used to build the pyramids of Egypt in 4,000 to 2,000 RC. It was not long after this that the beauty of marble, which is in fact a limestone, came to be appreciated and it found wide application in sculpturing and for decorative wall construction. Originally lime, mixed with sand, was used mainly as a mortar for building purposes, the earliest record of its use for chemical purposes being in 350 B.C. in a report of the wreck near Marseilles of a ship carrying a cargo of linen and lime 'for its bleaching'1. Cato mentioned the burning of lime kilns in 184 B.C. and the Romans made extensive use of both limestone and lime for highway construction.
