Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in effort put to tracking progress toward sustainability. Many aspects of society are participating in this “movement” including mining. The drivers are diverse and include evolving ideas in business and public administration as well as concerns for human well-being, community robustness, environmental integrity, and overall social and ethical responsibility. The scale in question varies greatly from local to global. For the most part, there has been a pre-occupation with developing discrete measurable signals. This paper argues that the overwhelming focus on the quantitative is ill-advised and that a more effective approach is to bring together the best of both quantitative and qualitative. The mining industry in particular is well-placed to affect this shift and reap the associated benefits.

Abrasion is an important mode of performance for any element of an engineered product that involves material contact for example, a conveyor belt cover. Abrasion resistance is considered to be one of the leading factors in belt cover design and improvement. Various types of abrasion testing are reviewed by and compared to actual belt applications. A new quantitative screening torsional abrasion test is developed by Goodyear to mimic a dynamic contact between belt cover and differently shaped stones of various weights dropped onto belt at any angle, velocity and height.

The Cerro Vanguardia mine is an AngloGold Limited operation in southern Argentina that includes multiple open pits and a hybrid Merrill-Crowe and CIL circuit to recover gold and silver from oxide ore. Operations were commissioned at the site in 1998, which included a plant in the metallurgical circuit to recover cyanide from mill tailings. The cyanide recovery plant was initially configured to process tailings slurry and achieved greater than 90% cyanide recovery from tailings containing about 600 to 800 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). The cyanide recovery circuit was operated in this manner for approximately eight months, during which time the consumption of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide was relatively high, leading to high rates of scale formation in the acidification tank and stripping towers. In July 1999, several piping changes were made in the cyanide recovery system to permit its operation with clear solution, which reduced the sulphuric acid consumption and eliminated scale formation in process equipment. The cyanide recovery system currently operates with a two-stage counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit which provides clear solution for processing in the cyanide recovery plant. The cyanide recovery efficiency now averages about 90% to 92% from solution containing about 350 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). Recovered sodium cyanide now accounts for about two-thirds of the total cyanide added to the leaching circuit. This paper presents a description of the cyanide recovery plant and details regarding its current operating efficiency.

There is general agreement among those involved in occupational and public health that work-related diseases are under-diagnosed and under-reported. Highmark is particularly well positioned to carry out industry health analysis as it provides medical insurance for approximately three quarters of the insured population of Western Pennsylvania including some of the areas largest employers. The purpose of this study is to gain a more accurate understanding of the mining industry rates of respiratory diseases that maybe occupationally related and identify those inflated respiratory disease and hearing loss rates. Conditions examined included COPD, asthma, and pneumoconiosis.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

Knowledge of local coal mine roof geology is critical to the design of a safe and suitable mine structure. An automated drill control and data collection system has been designed for a J.H. Fletcher twin-head roof bolter. Drilling parameters collected during the drilling process can be used to interpret geologic features intercepted in the mine roof. The drill and data collection system have been tested in both laboratory and underground settings. Visualization of certain drilling data has shown good correlation with geology drilled. A quantitative prediction model was developed using drilling parameters examined with data visualization. The quantitative model was tested using laboratory drilling data.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.

This paper explores the age-old concept of mine-mill reconciliation from a new perspective. Advances in reconciliation processes have been slow to materialize because in the quest for “rightness”, engineers, geologists and metallurgists have become entrenched in their viewpoints, dutifully performing to the metrics and expectations imposed upon them by the siloed organization. Moreover, reconciliation has not been viewed as a primary value creator, but an accounting non-value added task. In reality, the knowledge from reconciliation can significantly enhance yields. Critical review of the direct variables (tons, grade, etc.) and other less-obvious variables (incentives, communication, etc.) reveal a complex web of barriers to be cleared by management in order to realize benefits. Also, mineralogical reconciliation methods may offer renewed faith in the process.

Newmont mine geologists in Nevada are most proficient when applying technical expertise with multi-departmental teams in three main settings. The first is value creation through near-mine discovery, development and reserve conversion. Since 1986, geologists have created substantial net asset value in developing more than 1.35 kt (43 million oz) into quality Nevada surface and underground gold reserves. The second setting is value realization by supporting mine operations with ore control, selective mining, reconciliation investigations and strategic planning. The investment of technical research on reconciliation investigations led to new concepts and practices that highlighted opportunities for large revenue and reserve gains. In 2002, more than $65 million in projected revenue was added to the Gold Quarry south layback. Kriged mine polygon construction and controlled blast heave at the Lone Tree Mine provided millions of dollars in mining efficiencies. High-quality geologic advice in selective mining at the Twin Creeks Mine helped obtain $4.3 million revenue gains throughout 2002-2003.

In conveyor design, the first step is capacity and the second step is belt width and speed. The third step is decision on 'ff," where distinction arises between DIN/ISO and CEMA for calculating resistances. Then again, both the methods are virtually similar. This topic helps in understanding Dm design style and its comparison to CEMA. This topic is from the book Engineering Science and Application Design for Belt Conveyor wherein the issue has been analysed in detail. It presents a workable calculation model to calculate the value off in design office, based on conveyor parameters. CEMA uses Kx, Ky and 0.01 5 instead off. Thus, f is a sum effect of Kx, Ky and 0.015. Hence, knowledge on f is also applicable to Kx and Ky. This helps to understand their relationship.

Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

Allmand exhibited its LSC 100Light Sequence Commander, the mining industry’s first automatic lighting and command control system. The system is available with all of Allmand’s portable light towers. The LSC100 uses a preset photocell sensor that allows the light tower to be automatically turned on or off. At dusk, the sensor engages the power unit and then activates the light. At dawn, the sensor automatically shuts off the light. The unit also features an eight-event digital timer that allows eight separate sequences daily. The LSC100’s sequenced light control ensures that the engine is started before the lights are turned on or off. This prevents possible generator damage that can occur if the unit is powered down under load. Also, a low-fuel shutdown sequence helps protect the generator from damage by automatically shutting down the unit when the fuel level reaches 10 percent. And the LSC100’s smart circuitry senses engine water temperature during startup, determines the glow-plug time requirement and schedules repeat intervals, if necessary, to start the diesel engine.

Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? Major societal and industry changes over the last four decades have influenced the management of technology in the minerals industry. From the authors' experiences in both private and public sector R&D, the paper analyzes the range of strategic and structural changes and provides examples of some key technology delivery responses. For those charged with managing technology, the two key challenges facing them over the next decade are (I) moving technology development from a cost focus to a value focus (that is, from "how much long-term research can we afford?" to "identifying and capturing the value created from R&D”) and (2) the recruitment and retention of key talent. THE NEED TO ADAPT "Change is slow and gradual. It requires hard work, a bit of luck, a fair amount of self- sacrifice, and a lot of patience (Greene 1998)." Since the 1960s the world has changed and the minerals industry has had to adapt to the changing circumstances. In the '60s, minerals were there to be discovered and fortunes to be made; in Australia, the World War I1 embargo on exporting iron ore was lifted and the Western Australian iron-ore boom commenced, to be followed by the exploitation of the Darling Range bauxites; copper, lead, zinc and nickel were discovered and mines developed. The Australian dollar was worth US$1.11 whereas today it is around US$0.65. The oil crisis of 1976 sharpened focus on the sensitivity of the minerals industry on energy costs.
