"INTRODUCTION Typically waterproofing of conventionally excavated tunnels has been done by installing pre-fabricated sheet membranes between the primary temporary support lining and the secondary permanent inner lining. The membrane acts as a separation or sliding layer between the linings, which is often desirable. The geotextile installed behind the sheet membrane provides the required drainage and protection of the system. The design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of waterproofing sheet membranes. Since primary and secondary linings are separated from each other, forming a double-shell lining system. In that case the secondary lining must be designed for all permanent loads, although the sprayed concrete primary lining continues resists ground and water loads for a long time after construction. Significant progress has been made in sprayed concrete technology over the last two decades, with advanced admixtures, as well as the improved application technology using spraying robots. The development of new admixtures like superplasticizers based on poly-carboxylates, alkali free accelerators and silica fume, enables designers to use permanent sprayed concrete linings (SCL) increasingly for long-term service life. When designed and applied correctly, sprayed concrete can be considered as permanent. The use of spray applied membranes has seen increased use over the last decade in some countries, and demonstrated functionality and cost-effectiveness in several situations. This paper describes the use of the sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345, an EVA polymer based product, and the practical experiences from several projects. SPRAY APPLIED WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES The sprayed waterproofing membrane is polymer based and has been especially developed for underground structures. The membrane is applied between primary and secondary concrete linings and develops high bond strength on both sides to the concrete (doubled-bonded)."

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

A new method of designing haulage systems, consisting of belt conveyors and hoists for underground mines is discussed in this paper. Efficient and economic design of such systems will prevent operational bottlenecks and provide savings. The developed model uses a heuristic algorithm to optimize the design parameters and to select the proper equipment specifications. It is a probabilistic model because it considers the probabilistic aspects of face operations. It is versatile because it can accommodate belt conveyor networks of any configuration and hoisting systems that can be either drum or friction hoists for single or multiple-level operations. The model also has the option to internally determine the required capacities of the bunker(s) and shaft- bottom bin. The objective of the optimization process is to minimize the "expected cost per ton of ore hauled" from the working faces to the surface. A numerical example is included to illustrate the capabilities of the model.

In order to simulate the operation of coal extraction machines, a portable workability instrument has been designed. Initially, the tests were performed with the instrument on modeling material, which were followed by in situ tests on coal in underground mines. The peak and mean cutting resistance and work done to cut a unit length of coal were determined for coal as well as modeling material. In addition, rebound strength and dynamic penetration tests were also performed in situ. On the basis of the cutting characteristics of coal, a "Workability Index" has been developed and its role in the judicious selection of coal cutting machines has been discussed. With reference to prior works and the strength characteristics of coal, it was found that the coal plow may not be suitable for the seams under investigation and the shearer seems to be the only choice. It has been observed that peak cutting resistance and the "Workability Index" in the case of coal as well as modeling material depend upon compressive strength. The peak cutting resistance exhibited certain dependence upon the Schmidt rebound hardness and dynamic penetration strength of coal in situ.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Introduction US dependence on external energy sources is dangerous because of unstable political situations existing in key energy exporting countries. So, recent national energy policies call for increased reliance on domestic energy sources. Coal ranks as the most feasible domestic energy source due to its abundant reserves and continental distribution. But to efficiently extract these coal reserves, huge sums of capital funds are needed. Due to the depressed economy, lenders of capital funds are forced to be more stringent with loan applications. This results in fewer loans granted. In many cases, it is uncertain if funding can be obtained. Furthermore, the greatest level of domestic mine financing is expected to be in the coal sector. Demand for capital in the domestic coal industry is anticipated to increase 80% by 1990. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York warns that these future needs cannot be met by the present capital markets. This article analyzes the current and expected situations of the capital markets available to the domestic coal industry, including: • current and expected future types of financing used in the domestic coal industry; • problems the domestic coal industry may encounter as it seeks capital; and • the future availability of capital funds as concluded from analysis of the first two items. Background Information Regardless of industry, all projects or ventures can be divided into four basic stages: generation; evaluation; selection; and execution. Within the mining industry, one can break down these stages to draw a clear picture of mine development, as shown in Fig. 1. Each successive stage has a corresponding risk level. This risk level defines the type of financing available to the mine operator. Mining Venture Risks A coal mining venture can be characterized by its unique blend of technical and financial risk. As the mine moves through different development stages, varying proportions of each of these risks are encountered. It is these risks that the lender evaluates to determine project suitability. For a coal mining venture, the major complexities generally occur with the technical risk. These include: • quantifying the coal reserves: • assessing the feasibility of the mining method; and • evaluating the design of the wash plant. The reserve risk is gauged by the amount of measured, mineable, and saleable reserves. The greater the latter amounts, the lower the risk. Secure title to the reserves plus title for any surface areas required are also of concern to the banker. The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. INTRODUCTION Shrinkage stope mining can be employed in steeply dipping veins where both the wall and the vein material are sufficiently strong to stand with only minimal ground support. Shrinkage stope mining takes advantage of the swell in volume produced in breaking in-place ore. This expanded volume of ore is allowed to occupy part of the mined-out vein, and in so doing provides ground sup¬port and a working surface for the miners. Only enough of the ore is drawn after each stoping cut to allow work¬ing room. Not until the entire mining block has been broken is the full amount of broken ore drawn from the stope. DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOR SHRINKAGE STOPING The vein is developed into stoping blocks, each of which is 76 to 91 m (250 to 300 ft) in length and 61 m (200 ft) between levels. Level development, described later, is either on the vein or parallel to it with crosscuts periodically driven over to the vein. There are usually two exits from each stope. The first entry is a raise at one end driven either conventionally by raise climber, or by a raised borehole. Present practice is that this raise, put in from level to level, is either a 2.1- x 2.1-m (7- x 7-ft) Alimak raise or a 1.2- to 1.8-m (4- to 6-ft) diam borehole. Either raise system will require pro¬visions for an ore chute carried with the stope to the haulage level or the scram drift. At 9- to 12-m (30- to 40-ft) vertical intervals, dogholes are developed from the raise so that when stoping breaks back into these dogholes, timber or steel sets and necessary service facilities can be installed. The second entry to the stope may be either a similar raise at the stope endline, or more economically, a cribbed raise carried with the stope. As previously stated, development of the ore block is achieved by either drifting on the vein or by paralleling the vein with a footwall lateral and then crosscutting over to the vein at specified intervals. In the following discussion, three basic cases are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In Fig. 1, development is in the footwall by a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless lateral. A heading is also driven on the ore and taken either full width or driven a standard size and slabbed to the vein width. Approxi¬mately 9-m (30-ft) long crosscuts on 7.6-m (25-ft) cen¬ters are driven from the lateral to the vein. For ease in muck handling they are usually put in on a slant rather than at right angles. A single orepass, located off the lateral and in the center of one stope block, can serve not only that stope, but also one on either side, up to a tramming distance of not more than 137 m (450 ft). Raises are put at the stope endlines on 91-m (300-ft) centers. The back of the vein is shot down and just enough broken material is drawn off to permit access for men to work off the broken ore. Development in Fig. 2 progresses by driving a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless heading on the footwall side of the vein. The ore block is delineated by raises on 91-m (300-ft) centers. Crosscuts are again driven on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers over to the vein. Approximately four rounds are then taken up to the vein and each round is successively belled out so that all the crosscuts (pockets, in this case) connect. My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

Road construction in the near future will require contractors to guarantee that a project will remain trouble free for years after the project has been completed. These guarantees will challenge aggregate producers to become technically proficient in judging performance of their products. Testing procedures are described that may be used to predict performance of concrete and asphalt pavements before being committed into a construction project, and may also be used as quality assurance tools during construction to monitor performance as construction proceeds.

Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming's Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit's hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall hits are responsible for breaking into and chipping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations found that the bits being used were working under various degrees of wear. This wear can be reduced by using better-designed longwall bits and by properly selecting shearer operating parameters. A computer program was developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The information required by the program are the shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit-wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses aspects of rock engineering applicable to surface gold mines. Discussion particularly centers on areas in which rock mechanics can enhance the mine productivity or profit- ability. Methods of analysis are discussed briefly but for more detai1s the reader is referred to the appropriate references. A team approach to the overall design of the pit generally pro- duces a better result at an overall lower cost. In particular, money is wasted by asking for a "report on slopes" and then input- ting this slope angle into a pit design and economic analysis study without further reference to the geotechnical engineer. Pit slope angle depends on slope orientation, location, pit shape, pre-existing discontinuities and mining methods. Preliminary slope angles can be produced but optimization depends on ongoing inter- action between the mining engineers, geologists and geotechnical engineers. This interaction can a1 so substantially reduce overall design time which may be critical in bringing remote plays into production. Most surface gold mines in North America are in igneous or metamorphic environments. Rock mechanics aspects discussed in this paper will be discussed with reference to these environments al- though most of the principles and comments are applicable to sedimentary environments as we1 1.

The study is based on the so called METASEP process which includes selective sorption of heavy metals by special bonding agents (BA), separation of boding agents from the water by means of microfiltration and/or flotation and regenerating the loaded bonding agents, leading to a metal concentrate for reuse or discharge. The bonding abilities of different bonding agents suitable for application in METASEP process were evaluated. Two groups of BA are studied, namely: chelating ion exchange resins and water soluble oligomers. The group of ion exchange resins studied includes eight organic resins, mostly chelating cation exchangers and representatives of conventional strong and weak cation exchangers. The resins with iminodiacetic and aminomethyl phosphoric acid groups showed highest affinity towards several heavy metals. The study of resin particle size showed that this parameter is a key factor influencing the kinetics of heavy metal sorption. The group of water soluble oligomers (WSO) includes polyvinyl alcohol, carboxyl-methyl-cellulose, polyvinylethylenimin and pectin. The Metal-WSO complexes were separated by Ultra Filtration. The effect of Metal-WSO mole ratio and pH was studied. Depending on the operational conditions the heavy metal retention varies within 68-99%. It was shown that regardless of pH and mole ratio Metal-WSO, separation of certain ion from the metal mixture is not possible.

Valley-fill heap leaches built in steep terrain over low-friction angle liner system may be unstable even though analyses indicate stable ore slopes. This paper demonstrates the potential for massive heap failure using stability analyses which consider both heap slope and heap mass failure considerations. The computations presented also reveal the sensitivity of mass heap stability to liner friction angles.

An overview of new size reduction technology involving the use of two-mass natural frequency vibration applied to a totally enclosed elongated drum. Material moves with a drum-like rotary motion with exposure to constant, aggressive, high frequency agitation for faster reduction and enhanced product quality. A proven, patented design with few moving parts, a vibrating mill drum provides the desirable environmental benefits of a totally enclosed rotary drum but without the same interfacing difficulties. Natural frequency design has reduced energy demand which is met by low horsepower, self-contained, motorized drives to dramatically reduce the cost per ton of finished product.
