A technique is presented for simple characterization of the performance of flocculents in various mining applications. The method utilizes three key parameters obtained from raw settling data and combines them into a single athematical parameter called the desirability coefficient. The first two parameters are the timesrequired for the slurry-supernatant interface -to fall to two selected fractions of the starting height, and the third is the clarity of the supernatant liquid. The relative values of the three parameters may be assigned different weights in order to make them correspond with laboratory and field performance requirements of a particular industry. Provision is also made of an, internal comparison of test flocculant data with that of a control.

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), which will be held in Dallas, TX. This year’s conference will showcase the continued trend of strong industry interest, as there will be a record setting 115 papers being presented over the course of three days. The set of papers compiled in this book captures the latest and greatest information on a broad array of topics within our fascinating tunneling industry. We hope that the compilation of selected papers in this book will provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of future reference for contractors, engineers, and anyone in general who is a student of our beloved and unique industry. Since its inception in 1972, RETC has been the preeminent tunneling forum to promote ideas, tell stories, share lessons learned, and promote new technologies. RETC prides itself on its focus towards highlighting real-world experiences and practical ideas, with the intent to help the entire industry learn from one another and grow. The need for us all to stay sharp and remain on the cutting edge of technology has never been stronger – the technology and ideas that have been applied in aerospace are now attempting to mix with tunneling, and the advancement of AI continues to permeate all industries. However, no amount of technology or AI can fully replace the human element, and in our tunneling industry, the human element is key and is what sets us apart. In tunneling, every project is different, because the ground is always different. We can only take what the ground will give us, and we must rely on our past experiences to get through present day challenges. Most importantly, we must rely on each other. This is the heart of what RETC is all about. For those of you attending this conference, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible and engage with your colleagues to discuss during the breaks in between sessions. This sharing of ideas is what keeps us connected and helps to expand our industry. Please also try to engage with the scholarship students and the newcomers who will be in attendance, as it is the new ideas and fresh energy from the next generation that will continue to make our industry thrive into the future. The program chairs thank and greatly appreciate the efforts made by our session chairs, co-chairs, authors, the members of the RETC Executive Committee, and most importantly the SME staff towards making this RETC possible.

"The development of mining safety and health management as a recognized profession has been long in coming. Over the last 150 years, the mining industry has evolved from having individuals randomly involved in safety related work with no specific responsibilities or qualifications, on to the designation of individuals responsible for safety, regardless of knowledge, qualifications and experience and finally to today’s expectation that virtually every mine and mining company has designated individuals operating as safety and health professionals. Further, with the complexity, risk potential and moral expectations surrounding safety, people who address mine safety and health management are justifiably expected to function in a professional capacity including:1. Rendering a specialized service based on advanced knowledge and skill.2. Maintaining a high degree of obligation to those most affected by mine safety outcomes.3. Bound by an ethical code in working with the public, employers and miners.4. Maintaining confidentiality with an employer or client. This historical change parallels thedevelopment of other professions, e.g., attorneys, engineers, physicians, etc., with the exception that those professions require a license granted by a governmental agency, which is justified on the basis of public protection, in order to practice. Likewise, decisions made by today’s mine safety and health professionals, both directly and in association with other managers, clearly have a significant impact on the life and welfare of miners throughout the world.CertificationIn light of this, there is growing need to improve standards of competency and professionalism for those who work in mine safety and health management. An effective mechanism to accomplish this, other than licensure, is the use of accredited professional certification programs. There are many professional certification programs for safety and health throughout the world (Hale & Harvey, 2012). However, there is only one certification specific to mining —the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP). The International Academy of Mine Safety and Health (ISMSH-SME) was formed with the purpose of developing and managing mining safety and health certification programs for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). In 2016, following the discontinuation of the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals (ISMSP), which developed the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) credential in the 1990s, the IAMSH-SME began the process of updating and relaunching the CMSP program. Among other work required to gain third-party accreditation both domestically and internationally, the IAMSH-SME has developed a new Body of Knowledge associated with mine safety and health management (Table 1)."

Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. "Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. INTRODUCTION Refuge alternatives (RAs) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

Beneficiation of coal is a water intensive process, and the water is recovered in downstream operations in the high rate thickener (HRT) and vacuum belt filtration (VBF). Clean coal particles entering the HRT have an inherent tendency to enter the overflow because they are extremely fine and hydrophobic. Hence, flocculants (polymers) are used to floc the ultrafine particles so that they settle and enter the underflow. Ultrafine coal particles (−37 μ), which are highly hydrophobic, if present in the stream, will not be efficiently captured by using flocculants alone. This is observed in the normal plant operation at one of the beneficiation plants in the Jharia region, Jharkhand, India. Approximately 6–7% of the feed to the HRT enters the over flow (supernatant water). Hence, this amount of clean coal particles is not recovered and account for production losses. A comprehensive settling and dewatering test work was conducted with clean coal slurry using several commercially available reagents. Studies were also done on different combinations of reagents, including coagulants and surfactants along with flocculants, to improve the settling behavior of the coal particles. The reagents were assessed based on their performance with respect to settling rates, overflow water clarity, and compaction of the underflow solids. Emphasis was given to the ability of the reagents in compacting thickener underflow to higher densities so that maximum water could be recovered from the thickener. Pretreatment of highly hydrophobic coal slurry with a combination of coagulant and surfactant followed by flocculation showed very good settling characteristics with clear overflow.

"Language barrier in a workplace affects workers’ productivity and safety. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) review the various approaches for breaking language barriers among miners; and (2) analyze the costs and benefits of these approaches, and make recommendations on the way forward. The authors achieve these objectives by reviewing the current approaches in breaking language barriers among miners. The review reveals that some of these approaches can be expensive with less benefits. Thus, it is concluded that mining companies should carefully select the optimal approach to break language barrier. INTRODUCTION Multi-national mining companies have expanded their operations into non-traditional mining destinations to grow and meet market expectations. For instance, Newmont Mining Corporation has about 14 operations and projects located in Africa, Asia, Australia and America (Newmont Mining Corporation Operations and Projects, 2015). Similarly, Freeport-McMoRan operates about 14 mines in North America, South America, Southern Asia, and Africa (Freeport-McMoRan Inc., 2015). Some mining companies have also attracted expatriate workers into their workforce. For example, Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian mining company, in its 2013 annual report states that 34% of its total employees are expatriates (Ma'aden, 2013). Expatriates constitute a key source of skilled labor and facilitate skill transfer. The success of many international operations relies greatly on expatriate performance (Erbacher, D'Netto & Espana, 2006). Even companies that do not expand their operations into other foreign countries still have to deal with language barriers due to changing language demography of the country and the areas from which labor is sourced. For example, the language composition of the workforce and languages used in South African mines is diverse with miners proficient in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and others to varying degrees (Research Focus (Pty) Ltd, 2011). As a result of these trends, most mines today operate with a multinational workforce. This means cultural differences, including language barriers, exist among the miners. Marschan-Piekkari, Welch and Welch (1999) emphasize the fact that language problems become prominent as companies internationalize and grow their operations into more countries. According to a survey by Forbes, language barrier affects operations. For example, business owners acknowledge that language proficiency may promote a safer work environment (Rubin, 2011). A research has shown that language and cultural barriers in a workplace contributes to reducing workers’ productivity, increasing accidents, and hurts employers’ ability to recruit, hire and retain workers (Morris, 2002). Hence, mines are making efforts to break language barriers in their operating environments. Ma’aden, for instance reported in 2013 that 1,506 of its employees received training in English as a second language (Ma'aden, 2013)."

"Mining began in the Erzgebirge (“ore mountains”) region of Saxony, Germany more than 800 years ago, and extensive underground workings cut through the entire area. Some of these old workings are still used today: not for production, but for offering an underground venue for research, tourism and university teaching. One example is the Reiche Zeche mine at the Technische Universität Bergakadamie Freiberg which hosts one of the oldest mining engineering programs in the world. It is imperative to keep all active mine workings well ventilated to make the mine safe for students, visitors and researchers. Since the mine workings at Reiche Zeche are so vast, extensive and, to a large extent unexplored and unmapped, it has been difficult to provide a complete, functioning and adequate mine ventilation model for this mine that accounts for all known and unknown leakage air flows. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have cooperation with their colleagues at Freiberg to establish a mine ventilation network model based on a limited number of air readings in known and accessible drifts. In order to balance the measured air quantities, leakage flows were quantified and mapped by comparing input and output flows of mapped drifts, and modelled using Ventsim Visual, a powerful visualization software package. The resulting mine ventilation model is used to locate and quantify the leakage air flows and to examine how much air is lost in each area. With this model, ventilation changes and improvements underground can be documented reflected in the model. This enables the Bergakadamie Freiberg to project air changes required for scientific experiments and to set up mine ventilation in specific areas and for specific needs. The model also enables better ventilation control and monitoring than before. Finally, the model can be used to predict ventilation changes and escape way contamination in case of a fire, ground fall or inundation in the mine. The latter becomes important as the lower mine workings are often flooded during spring runoff, which has created uncertainty about mine ventilation in the past. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The discovery of silver, lead, zinc, tin and other valuable metal ores in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, Germany began in the12th century and started a mining boom than lasted for centuries. Surface mines quickly developed underground to access the higher grade veins. Explored by the early geologists and driven by the ingenuity of the miners, the underground works expanded vastly throughout Freiberg and the surrounding region. Development followed the highest grade veins, and engineers developed solutions to drain water and provide limited ventilation to the underground workings. Still, engineered and planned ventilation was usually not a priority in the development of a new drift, which today makes ventilation modeling a significant challenge."

In response, Rio Tinto has successfully introduced innovative approaches to learning and employee engagement via leveraging the power of globally distributed networks for peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and providing mechanisms to recognise, reward and retain the individual technical contributors.

Recent developments in expanded PTFE membrane filter cloths offer high flow rates and sub-micron particle removal. These high strength, industrial grade filter cloths can be tailored for tubular filters, leaf filters and rotary vacuum drums. Filtration techniques using tubular filters make possible filtration of difficult slurries with the elimination/reduction of filter aids and chemical additives. This paper describes principles of surface filtration, applying the membrane filter cloth and comparisons to gravity separators. Benefits to the mining industry include clear effluent, enhanced solids recovery and accelerated cost payback.

Respirable coal dust has been long recognized as a leading cause of multiple lung diseases. Efforts aimed at reducing dust concentration in underground mines have been made, but increases in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis incidence rates over the last 20 years among U.S. miners are concerning. Dust deposition and water spray suppression are two types of dust removal mechanisms in underground mining activities. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the respirable dust decay characteristics during deposition and suppression processes in a confined dust chamber. Dust concentration and size distribution were monitored continuously throughout each 60-minute test. A number-basis particle size distribution was used for analysis to capture the changes of smaller size fractions within the investigated dust sample. This study found that around 62.1% of respirable dust particles were deposited at the end of the deposition test. In addition, the final deposition rate for very fine particles can be less than 20%. The results from the suppression test indicate that larger particles were removed quickly; however, sub-micron particles remain suspended through the 60- minute water spray, and particles under 0.5 µm can be considered irremovable dust under single-spray operation conditions. This study also observed the resuspension of a significant amount of sub-micron particles by the water spray. The results of this study provide basic information for improving dust control strategies and can be utilized to improve the water spray performance for reducing airborne dust levels.

The increasing popularity of alternative methods in delivery of underground infrastructure projects has given rise to innovative and collaborative contracting strategies to allocate and manage the unique risks associated with the work. This paper presents approaches and recent examples of how risk has been dealt with using various alternative delivery methods, including Progressive Design Build (PDB) and Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC). Based on the experience gained from these examples, recommendations for an innovative and collaborative risk baselining approach using contingency sharing are presented that should advance the overall goals of equitable risk sharing and compensation.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. "INTRODUCTION While the United States coal mining uses prescriptive regulation under the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulation enforced by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Australia uses a risk based approach. Australian regulation is individual to each state. In Queensland, Australia this risk based approach to address principal hazards is underwritten by the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act of 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation of 2001. Each Queensland Mine is required to have an overarching Health Safety and Environment Management System, of which Safety Management Plans are an element. “Safety Management plans (SMP’s) are intended to formalise the process by which mines address principal hazards and other related matters to ensure the safety of mine personnel.”7 THE QUEENSLAND CONTEXT In Queensland, the basic elements of a coal mine’s safety and health management system must provide for risk identification and assessment, hazard analysis, hazard management and control, and the reporting and recording of relevant safety and health information and data.5 (Part 2 Division 1 Section 6(a-d)) The initial guidance for writing Safety Management Plans comes from the Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans and Guidance Note QGN09- Reviewing the Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems. The Guidance Note and Approved Standard are supplemental to the Act and Regulation, and put in place to provide more clarity around the topic. The definitions in this section come from the Approved Standard and are included to provide context for those who may not be familiar with Australian or Queensland law and regulation. A hazard is defined as a source of potential harm or a situation with a potential to cause loss, while a principal hazard is a hazard with a potential to cause multiple fatalities. A risk is the chance of something happening that will have an impact upon objectives which is measured in terms of consequences and likelihoods. It is important to be able to make the distinction between a hazard and a risk. For instance, a lion is a hazard, while the risk associated with a lion is getting eaten. As defined by the Queensland Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans, a Safety Management Plan (SMP) requires a systematic definition of all the actions necessary to ensure that mining operations are carried out safely.
