The efficient and acceptable disposal of fine coal refuse (28MxO) is one of the highest priority problems facing the coal industry today. For many years the established system for the disposal of this fine refuse slurry has been to concentrate the solids in a static thickener and pump the resulting 20-40% solids underflow to lagoons or impoundments. Although this technique has served the coal industry well, increasing environmental concerns and refuse related disasters, such as Buffalo Creek, West Virginia and Aberfan, Wales, Great Britain have resulted in federal and state regulations which now control fine refuse disposal methods. As a consequence of these regulations, the capital costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating regulatory complying impoundments has become in many cases economically unattractive. Areas processing topologies similar to those coal preparation plants of the Appalachians are particularly burdened by these regulations and are consequently turning to alternatives for handling and disposal of their fine coal refuse. The basic requirements of impoundment alternatives as defined by environmental and plant demands are: (1) A relatively solids-free liquid (1000 ppm or less) to serve as plant make-up water in a "closed circuit" system, and (2) a sufficiently dewatered solids product which can be combined with the coarse refuse to form a compactable stable land-fill.

New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

The MODSIM mineral processing plant simulator is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open-and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

"INTRODUCTION The 2014 SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (the SME Guide) has been adopted by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). The SME Guide is recommended as a minimum standard and a basis for developing industry best practices in the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves for public and private purposes. The Guide is therefore strongly recommended to be used by members of this organization. The SME Guide was updated in 2014 to include CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserve International Standards) core definitions, and it is envisioned that the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will adopt the SME Guide in 2016. However, as of the end of 2015, the SEC Industry Guide 7 remains the standard for the U.S. reporting of Mineral Reserves. This paper will cover the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves, a discussion of Modifying Factors, and the classification definitions and guidelines. The definitions and guidelines contained in this report are from the SME Guide. FRAMEWORK FOR MINERAL RESOURCE AND MINERAL RESERVE CLASSIFICATION Figure 1 illustrates the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves using the Guide. Mineral Resources are divided into three classifications of Inferred, Indicated, or Measured while Mineral Reserves include Probable and Proven classifications. These classifications reflect improved knowledge and confidence of the deposit from the top of the figure to the bottom. In other terms, the deposit risk also decreases from top to bottom.The relationships in Figure 1 reflect different levels of geoscientific knowledge and different degrees of technical and economic evaluation. Mineral Resources can be estimated on the basis of geoscientific information with input from other disciplines to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. It was not too many years ago that the classification of a Mineral Resource was based on the evaluation of a limited set of factors that included spatial drill hole and grade distribution (kriging variance, as example), distance to the closest hole, and number of samples used to estimate a block grade. These are still important considerations, but classification following the Guide must also take into account sample integrity, sample QAQC, database integrity and completeness, geological understanding, and geological and grade or quality continuity. In addition, a general consideration of the Modifying Factors, to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction, adds complexity to the classification."

The Elliot Lake Centre was established in 1965 as an independent Centre for Continuing Education offering a variety of adult education services. In 1976 all retraining and community college type activities were transferred to the Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology which had opened a branch campus in Elliot Lake. Upon the completion of this transfer, the Elliot Lake Centre was then contracted in 1977 by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to study the feasibility of establishing a research and information institute dealing with various health and safety concerns of the uranium worker. By late 1980, a federal charter was granted for the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety, made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Ontario uranium mining and refining companies, and the Elliot Lake Centre. On 1 April 1981 the Institute officially began operations. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In May 1978 the Elliot Lake Centre initiated a voluntary sputum cytology program for uranium workers. This program was financed by the Ontario uranium mining companies: Agnew Lake Mines Limited near Sudbury; Madawaska Mines Limited in Bancroft, and Denison Mines Limited and Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake. In 1981 additional funding was granted by Eldorado Nuclear Limited for a small group of employees at the company's uranium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario. Initially in 1978, program participants were accepted according to length of employment, radiation exposure levels (calculated in working level months) and/or smoking history. These restrictions were abolished within a few months and all uranium workers were encouraged to participate. From 1978 to 1979 the sputum cytology program was medically directed by personnel from the Montreal Cancer Institute. Until 1979 all data maintenance for the program was performed manually, however the effort required to sustain the system increased significantly as the number of participants grew. In September 1979 the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, under the direction of Dr. F.G. Pearson, submitted a proposal to the Elliot Lake Centre to develop a data processing system to help coordinate the surveillance program. In October 1979, Dr. Pearson became the new Project Director. Director of the Cytology Program is Dr. D.W. Thompson of the University of Toronto who is responsible for all cytologic analyses. Developmental work to establish the new surveillance system was initiated in January 1980 and became fully operational at the beginning of March 1981. The following sections describe the Elliot Lake operations of the sputum cytology program now conducted by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION As of 1 September 1981 the sputum cytology program has 518 participants enrolled. Eligibility is restricted only to a willingness to participate and the ability of an individual to produce adequate sputum samples. Each participant registers for the program at the Institute and is given personal instruction on methods of sputum collection. The majority of the participants in this program are employed by the uranium mining industry; some work for firms which are contracted by the larger companies. Many participants are either retired from the work force or receive disability pensions or workmen's compensation benefits. Other participants have been employed in the uranium mining industry and have since gone on to other employment; some work for various federal and provincial governmental agencies concerned with the mining industry. Some participants are referred to the program by their family physicians because of smoking histories and/or various respiratory conditions. A small number of these individuals have never been involved in the mining industry at all. A chart describing program participation by employment is found in Appendix 1. PROGRAM REGISTRATION In the Elliot Lake area, persons interested in registering in the program are required to go directly to the Sputum Cytology office located at the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. Each individual is interviewed personally by the Program Officer. For the employees of Agnew Lake Mines, Madawaska Mines and the Port Hope refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, registration is possible during the Program Officer's semi-annual on-sitevisits. Participants are assigned, in chronological order, "program numbers" for easier identification. File labels are color-coded according to place of residence or, in some instances, place of employment. "The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

AngloGold Ashanti operates the world`s deepest mine, Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. A vast refrigeration and ventilation system provides acceptable working conditions 3800m below surface at 60°C rock temperature. In such a system, optimisation and assessment of modifications becomes very difficult. With that in mind, a research project was launched to determine whether recently developed system simulation technology can be applied to a mine as vast and complex as Mponeng. Using the techniques and methods as implemented in FLOWNEX software, it was indeed proven to be possible to do a mine-wide combined simulation of compressed air flow, ventilation air psychrometry and refrigeration water systems. Interactions between the various streams included heat transfer, pressure drop, evaporation and condensation. The simulation model was used in a parametric study to test various water flow and temperature operating points for the refrigeration system. It was found that, given current limitations, the mine refrigeration system is running fairly close to optimal but with some opportunities for improvement. The simulation model also provided useful insight for future changes or extensions to the system.

Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

Enterprise unmanned traffic management (E-UTM) is a holistic system concept evolving from technological developments in radio frequency (RF), where dynamic tracking can be added into current and emerging platforms. This is done through inexpensive RF sensors capable of real-time and cooperative, non-GPS tracking enabling digital visualization of assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The RF sensors are low in size, weight and power (SWaP), creating efficiencies in energy and material consumption while transmitting positions in real time and at long ranges. Multiple UAS and other unmanned vehicles can be visualized for risk mitigation in operations, thus enabling mine management to have better decision-making capabilities in the current and future mosaic of mine operations.

Nalco Chemical Company and a North Carolina Phosphate operation have formed a successful supplier/customer team effort that has resulted in major improvements in the operation of the clay thickening circuit at the Aurora, North Carolina concentrator. A Nalco OPTICUS® Automated Process Control System for thickener and flocculant control was installed in 1994. The paper will discuss in detail the development and refinement of the OPTICUS system over the past three years. The paper will survey the development and networking of process control for monitoring, controlling and operating four 325-foot Dorr-Oliver thickeners, three 80-foot high-rate Enviro-Clear thickeners and control links to the facility's clay/gypsum blending operation.

The continuous operation of decanters in the mining industry relies heavily on the use of synthetic flocculants. Today, as plants seek to lower production costs by increasing throughput it is necessary to obtain optimum performance from the flocculant. Factors affecting such optimization include charge and molecular weight selection, and efficiency of mixing the highly viscous polymer solution with the feed slurry. Beyond maximizing dilution of the solution, the last factor is often ignored. This paper describes a series of calculations, based on fundamental transport theories, that have been used to describe flow conditions within decanter feed wells and to help select flocculant addition points. Examples are shown for the case of hydroxamated polyacrylamide flocculants in the Bayer Process, where proper selection of the addition points can result in lower flocculant dosage and better control of the decanters.

A cooperative study was undertaken by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry, and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining in a neutral atmosphere before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried non-ferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environ-mentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environ-mental issues that will need continued deliberation before resolution, and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

The industrial practice of concentration of solids and production of clear solution by gravity sedimentation is an old technology. Through the years, many devices have been designed and built to aid this process. One of the more significant developments was a revolving rake mechanism to convey settled material to a central discharge point of a circular tank, patented in 1907(1). In recent years, clarification systems employing parallel inclined plates have appeared on the market; the original device utilizing this principle was patented in 1886(2). Numerous other methods have been invented, tested, discarded and sometimes re-invented, all with the specific intention of improving the capacity of a particular settling area. Sedimentation theory, as expressed in Stokes' Law, shows that the rate of settling of a particle is directly proportional to the difference in density between the particle and the surrounding liquid and, more significantly, proportional to the square of the particle diameter. Anything that can increase the latter will greatly assist sedimentation and, as a result, flocculation always has been an integral part of sedimentation. Most materials suspended in aqueous media are naturally flocculent to some degree and, hence, are readily concentrated by sedimentation, although sometimes very slowly.

INTRODUCTION Mobile excavating and handling equipment are important 'tools of trade' in the mining and construction industries. The handling of this equipment must be mastered so that its limitations are learned and its harmonic use with other pieces of equipment is practiced. he sudden growth in mobile excavating and handling equipment type, size, complexity, and application started after the Second World War. This growth has not been accompanied by pertinent human factors research. Investigations into the proper and safe handling of such equipment with due regard for human and machine limitations are lacking. One such piece of equipment is the front-end loader (FEL), which during one cycle of operation excavates, loads, and hauls, (Lotfi and Adler, 1981). The diversity of action by FEL is archetypical among excavating and handling equipment. Front-end loaders are the most rapidly proliferating type of equipment in the industry. Also, front-end loaders are involved in the highest number of accidents involving mobile excavating and handling equipment. In the period 1970 to 1978, FEL's were involved in 27% of all mobile equipment accidents in surface mining (Adkins, 1980). Improving operational safety and efficiency will reduce the frequency of accidents. The performance of the operators can be evaluated and improved by the following steps: first, define the operating conditions and the operator workload intensity (Adler and Lotfi, 1983), second, monitor the operator to evaluate his task performance, and third, make recommendations based on the findings. The stressful nature of the equipment operating task is an acknowledged fact (Field, 1980). However, a systematic measurement of stress evaluation is lacking. In this paper, methods for measuring mental stress and fatigue, are defined, the mental load which caused the stress is outlined, and stress measurement methods are proposed. "All-in sustaining cost is a metric used by mining companies to reflect the cost of gold mining in a consistent format useful to both investors and mining professionals. Cost reporting focused on the direct cost of mining and processing ore was summarized in the non-GAAP cash cost developed by the Gold Institute in 1996. In 2013, a group of mining companies, working with the World Gold Council, developed a more inclusive approach to reporting costs designed to solve the dilemma of showing a more comprehensive reflection of recurring costs involved in producing gold, without discouraging investors. INTRODUCTION Mining today plays a key role in the development of our civilization as a source of essential raw material and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs, and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer today than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly. A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production. An attempt to bring light and clarity on the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the All-in Sustaining Cost (AISC) and All-in Cost (AIC). Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses, and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted the past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $1900 per ounce in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow / income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits."

This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.
