This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder analysis in mining by providing further insights into the preferences of local community members using discrete choice theory. While recent research has demonstrated the usefulness of discrete choice theory in mining stakeholder analysis, no previous work has examined which discrete choice model (DCM) is most suitable. This paper provides a research note on a case study in a mining community that was performed to compare three DCMs. After a thorough examination of the benefits and deficiencies of all models, this study concludes that the conditional logit model stratified by questions is the most useful DCM for mining stakeholder analysis. The recommendation is based on the usefulness and accuracy (ability to match the survey data) of this model.

The structural design of a mine haul road involves the determination of cover thickness requirements above the in-situ or sub-grade material. The specification of these layerworks is a critical component in the overall road design process. Poor design often leads to premature failure of the road, safety is often compromised and productivity and equipment service-life will certainly decrease. Historically, the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) cover-curve design method has been widely applied to the structural design of mine haul roads. More recently, established mechanistic design principles have superceded the CBR approach to haul road design, using a multi-layer model to represent the various road structural layers. The structural design and associated layer thickness requirements are then determined following a maximum strain criterion. This paper develops a case-study evaluation of the CBR cover-curve and mechanistic design methodologies and through a comparative analysis of layerworks and materials, highlights how improved structural design can be achieved mechanistically.

The paper discusses key elements of the planning and implementation of 6.69 m Ø slurry mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) assembly in a small diameter deep shaft including incorporation of a fully pressurized launch lock, preparations for saturation diving, surface support infrastructure and initial mining sequence.

The United States is the world's largest producer of hydrofluoric acid (HF), with its 1971 output of 317,000 short tons representing about 40 percent of the estimated Free World production. U. S. production has increased over five fold in the past 20 years, with a growth rate of about 7 percent per year between 1960 and 1970. However, the growth rate to 1977 is expected to be less than 5 percent per year, due primarily to a reduced rate of growth in requirements by the aluminum industry and an expected increase in imports from Canada and Mexico. This discussion will include our analyses of the consumption pattern for HF in 1972 and the factors influencing the demand forecast for 1977.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. The application of digitization to operations and logistics is commonplace. From advanced data analytics to intelligent networks, digitization offers tremendous opportunities to create value, raise the efficiency of production processes, and reduce emissions. Several manufacturing industries have already implemented solutions to good effect by using digitization. Mining companies, for example, are using historical data about equipment health to predict potential failures, while aeronautics and automotive companies are using robotics and end-to-end digital twins to improve their design and production processes. Not surprisingly, first adopters of digitization in many industries have gained an edge over their competition. The cement and aggregate industry can better manage the enormous energy consumption, rising cost challenges, inefficient uses of raw material, logistic problems, emissions, and overall process complexity that are inherent in their operations by doing the same. This paper presents the results of a literature review and analysis and conveys the challenges for adaptation and implementation of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) in the cement and aggregate production industry.

Forecasts indicate that the acid rain bill currently before Congress is likely to cause an increase in demand of 30 to 40 million tons per year of compliance quality coal from Central Appalachia. This represents a doubling of this segment of the coal business. This paper will examine how this doubling can be met, what the likely implications for pricing are, the major uncertainties associated with these predictions, and the likely outcomes of the growth in compliance coal. Finally, some implications for fuel planners will be discussed.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. The presence of organic materials in gold ores cyanidation. The presence of organic materials interferes with gold extraction by The carbon contained in the ore has been shown to adsorb gold cyanide complex from solution. Removal of the carbon content by roasting or chemical oxidation prior to cyanidation results in gold extractions of 85 to 95 pct. This paper by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, discusses how the mineralogy of the carbonaceous gold ores affects gold recovery by cyanidation. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of roasting and chemical treatment to render the ore amenable to cyanidation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

"Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

The improvement of mineral processing data using material balance computer programs is nowadays a current practice in many plants, engineering companies or research centers. It now becomes more obvious that such programs should integrate new features such as the preprocessing of data, the estimation of less accessible process variables and an in-depth interpretation of: the computed results. A few solutions to these new problems are already available. The feasibility of a mass balance computation for instance can be examined by analyzing the degree of redundancy of the measurements prior to any data adjustment. New variables such as chemical analyses in particle size intervals or liquid phase composition can be included in a set of measurements. Finally, a sensitivity analysis can be used to analyze the reliability of the results, to detect eventual outliers or to redesign a sampling scheme. Some illustrations of these new developments are presented.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water inflows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk.

In recent years there has been increasing concern in the mining industry over the availability and high cost of diesel fuel to support mining operations. Unit Rig & Equipment Co. has been deeply involved with the development and testing of the newest designs for trolley assist. Beginning in dune 1980, Unit Rig modified and commissioned six 156 metric ton (170 short ton) trolley assist haulage trucks at two mine locations in South Africa. Operating haulage trucks with General Electric GTA 15E/776 drive systems were chosen for the tests since this size of truck represented the majority of the population of large size haulage trucks and the greatest technical development problems. Test operations have proven the feasibility of equipment designs in actual operation and preliminary economic data has convinced the operators to proceed with planning to modify their entire mining operation to use trolley assist. The initial capital investment incurred for trolley assist can be recovered in a short period of time. Following this quick capital recovery, mines will continue to realize lower operating costs through increased productivity and lower diesel consumption.

Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that influence miring. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined, conditions are met in most coal mines in southeastern Utah including those of the United States Steel Corporation. This coal bed measures up to 16 feet in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 2, 000 feet. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest..It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.

"The case for innovation in the mining industry has never been more compelling—whether you believe the industry is in a sharp dip in a significant ‘sawtooth’ cycle or in the midst of a bust — the imperative is the same. Despite record production levels and still above-average prices compared to the lows of 2000, the industry is struggling to make profits and provide the returns on capital that investors are seeking. This represents a large-scale destruction of value over the last 15 years.The last 10 years have seen a sustained rise of operation expenses and capital development costs while there has been a rapid decline in productivity. This trend is unsustainable especially against other key structural challenges and forces shaping the future of the industry:1. Despite short-term fluctuations, there is longterm sustained demand for commodities.• Demand is driven by relentless urbanization, population growth and a rapidly growing middle class.2. Environmental concerns continue to mount.• Existing mining methods and their environmental footprint are becoming increasingly unacceptable to society.3. Geopolitical pressures and community activism are growing.• An estimated $25 billion worth of projects are on hold due to community activism.• Increasing nationalism tendencies and government expropriations of close to $30 billion.• Social license to operate is being challenged.4. Finding, building, operating and closing a mine just keeps getting harder and more expensive.• Costs have been increasing at an annual rate of 10 to 15 percent for the last 10 years.• More assets are stranded as they become uneconomical to mine under current mining methods, e.g. Olympic Dam.• Ore grades continue to decline.• Declining productivity at an annual rate of more than 10 percent for the last 10 years.5. Recent advances in computing, rendering and display technologies have generated increased accessibility to virtual reality. Virtual reality allows for the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations and test conditions and to visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a virtual-reality framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine, including mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, a rugged, portable direct tensile test system was developed for measuring shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines. During the development of this test system, more than 185 direct tensile tests were conducted with a common, commercially available macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced shotcrete that was applied to concrete test panels using a dry mix process and machinery. The average bond strength of the shotcrete to the concrete substrate typically increased as a function of the shotcrete’s curing age, ranging from 0.44 MPa (64 psi) after one day of curing to 1.58 MPa (229 psi) after 90 days of curing. Adhesion strength increased markedly between one and three days of curing, reflecting a similar trend of increasing shotcrete tensile strength with curing time. This robust direct tensile test system can improve mine safety by providing a reliable means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength and also supplying important information about the quality of the applied shotcrete and the competency of the underlying rock.
