The transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of collector molecules to the surface of mineral crystals is an excellent method for the study of collector adsorption phenomena and is of particular significance in the understanding and development of improved flotation separations. The fatty acid/fluorite and amine/sylvite potation systems were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) examination of transferred LB monolayers of collector molecules at the surfaces of the mineral crystals. The [ir]-A isotherm study of fatty acid and amine, typical anionic and cationic collectors, showed the different packing trends dependent upon the pH and/or type of subphase. This result clearly reflects the effect of pH on compound formation and dissociation of the collector molecules. Identification of the collector adsorption state and confirmation of the validity of the FT-IR/IRS adsorption density equation were included in this research effort. This allowed for a detailed discussion of collector adsorption phenomena. As a result of these experiments, it is possible to relate the hydrophobic character of a surface to the nature of the adsorbed collector structure and thus describe flotation behavior in greater detail. For example, it appears that in the case of oleate/ fluorite the equivalent of an LB monolayer can form spontaneously during adsorption from solution, and this structure is known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Such a state is significantly more hydrophobic than the oleate structure which forms on the calcite surface at an equivalent adsorption density.

El Abra has mining concessions granting the right to exploit minerals in more than 130 km2 (32,122 acres). SCM El Abra owns “rights to occupy” the surface of these claims. The company also owns the surface rights over the process plant area and over land conveyor route. The project has procured all material easements relating to the mine area, processing facilities and access rights of way. Engineering, procurement and construction Figure 1 sets out the development and construction schedule for the project. Development is already well under way. As of early January 1996, about 70% of the project was complete and more than 80% of the capital expenditures were committed.

Ramifide conveyor transport of the biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is simulated by Petri nets. There are 6 longwalls with accidental output. 12 belts, and 5 transfer bunkers at this mine. It is necessary to coordinate transport links for recon- structed conveyor system. Many tasks were solved by dynamic simulation, such as estimation of transport lateness, influence of transfer bunkers on an unevenness of total coal flow, maximum filling of each bunker, maximum time of main conveyor refusal, co-ordination of unloading for dependent bunkers, choice of main conveyor. The problem of mine-wide conveyor transport animation for dispatcher is formulated in reference to mine "Komsomolets". OBJECT OF SIMULATION The biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is situated on a south part of Kusnetski coal basin (West Siberia). One mines about 20.000 tons of coal out of flat seams by 2.2-4.5 m thickness in a day. There are 6 fully- mechanized longwalls by output 720- 3600 tons in a shift in mine. Coal haulage to surface is carried out by 12 belts having 1.6 - 4.3 km length. For a smoothing over un- evenness of coal flows 5 transfer bunkers to 300 tons were intro- duced. INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for the coal industry — particularly in Asia — the power plants being planned or under construction are designed to use coal as fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal that, in turn, has encouraged many in the industry to develop new coal mines. Indonesia is a country that has enjoyed substantial growth in coal production. This developing country has 195 million people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands. It has quickly emerged as the third-largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface-mining methods.

In 1993, CONSOL began investigating new methods of permanently filling coal mine shafts, which after ventilation is stopped, may contain a potentially hazardous atmosphere. Fill materials such as fly ash/cement can be pumped, are non-combustible and non-incendiary but tend to flow into the mine entries. A non-flowable mixture has been developed that minimizes the volume of fill used. The paper presents our recent shaft filling experience including fly ash material properties, mix designs, field problems, placement success, and gas testing techniques.

The US economy and the demand for nonfuel minerals grew at lower rates in 1995 than in 1994. Demand for major metals, such as aluminum, copper and steel, was mixed but relatively stable. The building industry, including highway construction, helped to support modest overall growth in demand for industrial minerals. The value of processed materials of nonfuel mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10%compared with 1994 (Fig. 1). The estimated value of US raw nonfuel minerals production during 1995 was $38billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of US minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35years.

A workflow model is presented to assist in implementing a strategic information system in metallurgical plants.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

As part of a research program to develop a coal-handleability index that would predict the ease with which a coal would flow through a handling system, an apparatus was developed to directly measure the unconfined Yield strength and bulk density of consolidated-coal samples. The new test apparatus provides a fast and simple method for determining the strength and compressibility parameters that are associated with the handling characteristics of crushed coal. Comparative tests were conducted using a low-stress triaxial-test apparatus. To check the accuracy of the new method, four coals with a variety of moisture contents and gradations were tested using the new method. These tests indicate that the new test device yields valid results. Further, the speed and ease of operation of the new device makes it suitable for quality control and quality assurance in plants.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) offer capacity increases, savings in operating costs and metallurgical advantages. The first installation of the Polycom HPGR in a copper ore treatment plant occurred in July 1995 at Cyprus Sierrita’s mining complex near Green Valley, AZ (Fig. 1). Until that time, the benefits this technology offers for copper and gold ore were only demonstrated on testwork. In other industries, such as diamonds, HPGR have proven to be reliable in industrial-scale plants and have set a new standard for this kind of ore treatment plant. HPGR are also successfully used for the comminution of coal, blast furnace slag and in cement and pelletizing plants. The installation at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine should prove the economical benefits in commerical-scale copper mining, confirming the results of comprehensive testwork(Fig. 2).

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 14th annual American Mining Hall of Fame awards banquet Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996 at the Leows Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Each year, preceding the Arizona Conference of SME, the Mining Foundation sponsors this banquet to honor outstanding contributions by people in the mining industry. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining’s history are chosen by the hall of fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the foundation also established a medal of merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mining industry. And, in 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and individuals in partnership with the mining industry. This year’s inductee is Richard de J. Osborne, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Asarco. He will also be the featured speaker at the banquet.

An experimental study of the particle charac¬teristics of the magnesium carbonate crystals formed by the reaction between magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbon¬ate at different temperatures is described. The rate of growth of magnesium carbonate crystals for any constant tempera¬ture is established, and this rate of growth is related to the degree of supersaturation at the given temperature. The activation energy calculated using empirical constants de¬rived from the relationship between the crystal growth rate and supersaturation, is indicative of a surface-reaction mechanism.

A sample of thorium-contaminated soil from Kirtland Air Force Base (AFB) was subjected to froth flotation for removing thorium contaminants. A series of flotation tests were conducted to screen and evaluate the reagents. Among the collectors used, sodium oleate exhibited to show the promising results. Preliminary tests showed that a concentrate having activity as high as 5300 pCi/g can be obtained from the contaminated feed soil having activity 800 pCi/g. The volume reduction obtained was 89% and the activity recovery in the concentrate was 68%. The paper discusses the physico-chemical characterization data and the potential physical separation decontamination schemes for the thorium contaminated soils.

The continuous operation of decanters in the mining industry relies heavily on the use of synthetic flocculants. Today, as plants seek to lower production costs by increasing throughput it is necessary to obtain optimum performance from the flocculant. Factors affecting such optimization include charge and molecular weight selection, and efficiency of mixing the highly viscous polymer solution with the feed slurry. Beyond maximizing dilution of the solution, the last factor is often ignored. This paper describes a series of calculations, based on fundamental transport theories, that have been used to describe flow conditions within decanter feed wells and to help select flocculant addition points. Examples are shown for the case of hydroxamated polyacrylamide flocculants in the Bayer Process, where proper selection of the addition points can result in lower flocculant dosage and better control of the decanters.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GAS) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). GAS are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by mimicking the search procedures of natural genetics. FLCs are rule based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision making. GAS and FLCs can be combined to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and a learning element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. I" this paper, the details of an ongoing research effort to develop and implement an adaptive process control system for a column flotation unit are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989, which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This paper reviews present diesel emission standards, available diesel exhaust aerosol measurement techniques, and the results of the occupational exposure surveys. In the surveys, diesel aerosol was emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to contribute to the health hazard, and is readily measurable. Three primary aerosol measurement techniques were used: respirable combustible dust, size-selective sampling, and measurement of the elemental carbon fraction. Occupations surveyed included mine workers, railroad workers, forklift operators, fire fighters and truck drivers. The studies found mean diesel aerosol concentration levels in the range of 0.004 to 1.74 mg/m3? Highest aerosol exposures were in confined spaces such as mines where heavy diesel equipment is used. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons typically are found at very low concentration levels and are not unique to diesel exhaust.

Dorreh barite mine located in the central part of Iran is one of the largest barite mines, in the country. The mine is subdivided into three blocks, which are called block 1,2,3 according the barite quality. In the central part of each block, a heavily concentrated grid of exploratory drill holes have been drilled and the reserves of area was calculated based on these holes, some years ago. It was decided to compute the reserve of the area by geostatistical methods, in the form of an M.Sc. project. In order to study the area, three regionalized variables including density, thickness and density-thickness (accumulation) was studied and the spherical variograms were fitted to these variables. These models were evaluated by cross-validation method. The optimized block size was chosen in order to compute the reserves by kriging method. The reserves of explored parts of each block of mine was calculated and the results were extended to the whole area of the blocks. The reserve of the explored parts and the total reserve of the area were calculated to be 96,000t and 1,670,000t respectively.
