"In minerals processing control is vital to increasing performance and output of a plant. Model predictive control (MPC) is one of the most effective control strategies used in process industry. Sbárbaro (Sbárbaro and Del Villar, 2010), Asbjörnsson (Asbjörnsson, 2015), and Légaré (Légaré et al., 2016) have for example highlighted the possibility to simulate, develop and tune control systems using plant simulators within minerals processing. In more recent years the use of model predictive controllers have increased, and many process industries now utilize more advanced control methods to regulate their processes, raising the question regarding how to, build, test and verify a proposed control solution successfully. In this research, a linear model predictive controller is formulated and applied to a simulator of an existing tertiary crushing circuit. The circuit has in previous work by Johansson (Johansson, 2017) been modeled in MATLAB Simulink and calibrated relative plant data to an average error of less than 10% over 8 hours of production. The work demonstrates how to formulate the controller model structure to describe conveyor belts, storage components, screens, crushers, and control objectives for a minerals processing circuit. The work illustrates how to apply and successfully evaluate possible upsides in a circuit. The advantage of a crushing circuit simulator is that it can be configured, tuned and modified in any possible way, which is of great benefit to developers and engineers. Additionally, examples of how to use estimated measures to improve the performance of the plant are demonstrated. The control performance is finally evaluated for three different controller configurations."

"Lithium discovered in La Vi deposit, Quang Ngai province in the Central of Vietnam was estimated with a reserve of approximately 1.5 million tones of lithium ore, which was characterized by mainly lepidolite with muscovite, albite, and quartz. This study investigated reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions of enrichment technology for lepidolite from the mined ore by flotation process, and producing Li2CO3 and LiCl from lepidolite concentrate by hydrometallurgical process. The significant conditions for froth flotation of lithium ore including particle size, pH of ore slurry, pulp density, chemical spending (collectors, activators, depressants, and frothers), stirring and flotation time were investigated. The identified reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions for froth flotation the La Vi lithium ore processed lepidolite concentrate containing up to 4 wt.% Li2O with a recovery of 87.61 wt.%. The processes of sulfation roasting lepidolite concentrate using FeSO4.7H2O, then leaching in H2SO4 solution, and removing impurities were carried out to prepare a pure lithium-bearing solution for producing Li2CO3 and LiCl. The products containing 99.05 wt.% of Li2CO3 and 99.02 wt.% of LiCl were obtained with recoveries of 82.97 wt.% and 85.77 wt.%, respectively. The obtained results indicated that lithium ore in La Vi deposit can be processed to produce commercial lithium products and lead the study to develop technology for a new industry of lithium processing in Vietnam.INTRODUCTION Lithium is the lightest metal, which has many superior properties in both metal and compound (such as Li2CO3, LiCl...) states since its discovery in 1817 by Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson. Lithium is a favourable material for many high technology fields such as aerospace industry and chemical industry. Some industrial fields which present the main consumptions of lithium include ceramic, glass, aluminum alloy, lubricants, rechargeable Li-ion batteries, synthetic rubber, and pharmaceuticals. The worldwide production of lithium in 2014 was 31,700 tones, continually increased in 2015 of 5% presented 32,500 tones (USGS, 2016). The demand for lithium tends to increase because of the raising in consumption of lithium batteries. Lithium is mined from salar brines, mainly in Chile and Bolivia, but also from granites and pegmatites, which contain minerals with high lithium content such as spodumene - LiAlSi2O6 (Heinrich et al., 1978; Linnen et al., 2012); petalite - LiAlSi4O10 (Sitando & Crouse, 2012); zinnwaldite - KLiFe2+Al(AlSi3O10)(F,OH)2 (Paukov et al., 2010; Kondás J. & Jandová J., 2006); lepidolite - K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2 (Luong et al., 2013); and amblygonite - LiAlPO4F (Garrett, 2004)."

"Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp is complex both in fundamental research and in practice. In the case of thiol collectors, different Eh values in the flotation system can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. A variation in pulp potential may also be achieved by the addition of potential modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). There exists anecdotal evidence which suggests that the addition of small amounts of H2O2 to the flotation process can improve sulphide mineral recovery. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the potential modifier, H2O2, on sulphide mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphide minerals from two copper bearing ores from China and compare the results to those obtained for a PGM bearing ore South Africa. Batch flotation tests were conducted using the three different ores at the natural pH of the different systems, in the presence of a xanthate collector and the absence and presence of H2O2 as a potential modifier. The results indicate that the addition of carefully controlled low concentrations of H2O2 resulted in improvements in flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONElectrochemical potential as a control parameter in the flotation of sulphide minerals has been widely studied (Allison et al., 1972; Gardner and Woods, 1979; Ross and Van Deventer, 1985; Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003; Javadi, 2013). There is concensus that in order to be recovered during flotation, sulphide minerals require a suitable redox environment. During the flotation process thiol collectors and sulphide minerals are involved in electrochemical reactions which result in the formation of hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein and Goold, 1972; Rand and Woods, 1984). Sulphide minerals act as semiconductors and electrons are transferred during the interaction of the mineral with collector. The resultant potential difference and its magnitude are responsible for the transfer of electrons and the rate of the reaction (Bard and Faulkner, 2001; Fuerstenau et al., 2007). Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, may be manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system (Heyes and Trahar, 1979). The use of potential modifiers viz. reducing or oxidizing agents which include H2O2, NaClO, and NaHS, is an alternative method by which to control the potential of the pulp in a flotation system which may or may not promote the flotation of desired minerals (Rao, 2004). The oxidizing agent, H2O2, undergoes a cathodic reaction which can result in the enhanced flotation of valuable minerals. The potential of the system is increased which results in a shift in the mixed potential of a mineral. The magnitude of the over-potential influences the rate of the oxidation process and thus the flotation response of sulphide minerals (Kocabag and Guler, 2008). Equation 1 shows the proposed oxidation of xanthate by H2O2 (Lipkina and Streltysn, 1970)."

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act included the need for improved chemical technologies to address respiratory protective device inadequacies and refuge alternative development. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) invests in research and development to improve the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing technologies built into these mine safety systems. Testing at NIOSH NPPTL is performed using a custom-designed test system containing a chemical reactor and sensors in a constant flow of simulated expired breath to evaluate chemical performance for the scrubber materials. Current testing procedures focus on device duration or capacity, but do not report criteria needed to effectively optimize chemical performance. In this presentation, testing results which identify the chemical performance roles for CO2 scrubber components will be reported, and specific component chemical activities will be linked to both duration and CO2 absorption capacities. Chemical components being evaluated include hydroxyl, superoxides, metal, and amine active sites, distributed in salts, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and microporous materials. INTRODUCTION CO2 absorbents and oxygen sources are at the heart of closed circuit breathing air supply systems used in mining escape and rescue operations. CO2 absorbent technology was first developed for diving rebreathers and has been in use for over a century. Typically these devices include a soda lime formulation of pellets in the 8-12 mesh range. Larger 4-8 mesh particles are used in medical grade “low-flow” applications, since these particles present a lower flow resistance regime more amenable for use with resting individuals. Potassium superoxide and lithium hydroxide formulations are also used, where in each case the formulations involve bulk solid pellets or materials affixed to surfaces. CO2 capture technologies are now under intensive study in the energy and automotive industries, where the pursuit of optimal combustion processes has led to the development of new materials to capture, convert and store CO2, oxygen and carbon monoxide gases. Recent advances in nano-structured and high surface area catalysis have produced novel materials demonstrating chemical performance improvements in these industries, and these improvements may now also be adapted to enhance chemical efficiency and performance in escape and rescue devices. Higher surface area materials offer promise for improving the efficiency, or decreasing the burdens associated with the use of closed circuit respiratory protective devices containing CO2 absorbents. Novel chemicals that display advantages in chemical performance or decreased burden will be examined for inclusion in developing systems such as the next-generation closed-circuit mining escape respirator or refuge alternatives."

"In this paper, scheelite and scheelite coated with Pb2+ (SC) were synthesized by chemical precipitation with the help of ultrasonic. The role of the Pb2+ on scheelite was evaluated. Additionally, the dissolution behavior of minerals and the adsorption mechanism of collectors were investigated systematically via SEM, XRD, EDS. The results indicate that the ultrasonic cavitation can promote the formation of scheelite with large particle size and high crystallinity. Due to the exchange of WO4 2- and OH-, the dissolution of scheelite are not in a 1:1 equivalent amount by chemical formula and the concentration of WO4 2- is higher than that of Ca2+ in the solution because Pb2+ promotes the transfer of WO4 2- from scheelite surface into the solution. The dissolution of scheelite is an endothermic reaction and its enthalpy reaches the maximum value of 692.59J·mol-1 at pH=8~10. But the coating of Pb2+ changes the thermal effect of scheelite in the solution and the dissolution of SC is an exothermic reaction with the dissolution enthalpy of -262.30 J·mol-1. At pH=8~10, the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid on the surface of SC is higher than that of scheelite which delivers that Pb2+ contributes to the scheelite surface dissolution and enhances the adsorption of collectors on the mineral surface, thus achieving activation.INTRODUCTIONIn modern society, tungsten is a type of quite important rare metal and also a strategic resource. Because of its low vapor pressure, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity properties, it is widely applied in high-temperature technology, lighting, machine and engine construction (Zhao,Z.W, 2013; Yan, W, 2017; Ilhan, S, 2013). Both scheelite and wolframite are the major tungsten deposits. With the depletion of easily-processed wolframite, scheelite has drawn a great deal of scientific and industrial attention. Scheelite can be recovered by flotation due to the metathesis of polarity and chargeability on minerals surface via adding regulators and collectors."

"Autoclaves were first used in the metallurgical industry in 1893 to recover alumina from bauxite. In the 1940s and 1950s, several high temperature and pressure processes were invented in the laboratory of Professor Frank Forward at The University of British Columbia, in parallel with advances in equipment and processes by the Chemical Construction Corporation. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited enlisted these groups to help develop the nickel sulfide ammonia leach process that was commercialized in 1954. Autoclave processes that have since been commercialized include high-pressure acid leaching of laterites, zinc pressure leaching, and pressure oxidation of refractory gold feedstocks. RÉSUMÉ En 1893, l’industrie métallurgique est la première à utiliser les autoclaves pour l’extraction de l’alumine dans la bauxite. Dans les années 1940 et 1950, plusieurs procédés à haute température et à haute pression sont inventés dans le laboratoire du Pr Frank Forward de l’université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) ; parallèlement, la Chemical Construction Corporation fait de grands progrès en matière d’équipement et de procédés. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited fait appel à ces groupes pour qu’ils aident la société à développer le procédé de lixiviation du sulfure de nickel dans de l’ammoniaque, commercialisé en 1954. They are used in metallurgical refineries throughout the world to take advantage of the increased reaction kinetics and different reaction products that can be obtained in aqueous systems above the boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure. The word autoclave comes from the French “auto” and the Latin “clavis” and literally means self-locking—that is, the core distinguishing feature of an autoclave is that it includes a means for pressure regulation (e.g., a pressure relief valve). Denis Papin (Figure 1a), one of the inventors of the steam engine, was the first to make use of a safety valve to control steam pressure. He is credited with inventing the autoclave in 1679. Papin’s “digester” (Figure 1b) was a type of pressure cooker that was originally used to liquefy bones. Most commercial autoclaves are horizontal, multicompartment vessels with mechanical agitation, as shown in Figure 2a; however, the steam-agitated Pachuca vessels used to leach laterite ore in Moa, Cuba (Figure 2b), are also classified as autoclaves according to the self-locking definition provided above."

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of four foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard of 1.5 mg/m3. Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used low-pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a foam generator developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Foam property tests, consisting of a foam expansion ratio test and a water drainage test, were conducted to classify foams. Compressed-air-generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios, from 10 to 19, with high water drainage. Blower-air-generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios, from 30 to 60, with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The test results eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. IntroductionAbout one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining, which allows for mining high volumes of coal but generates significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to overexposures for longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases, including black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities (Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2015a). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain average concentrations at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present (MSHA, 2015b)."

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. Evaluation of the capacity of large-diameter drilled shafts using current load test methods present challenges when considering the magnitude of loads required to fully mobilize their capacities. Often, these full scale tests do not fully mobilize the capacity through side resistance. Therefore, the need for innovative solutions to extrapolate side resistance and interpret nominal capacity are of key interest. In this study, we evaluate three methodologies for extrapolating unit side resistance based on bi-directional load test data. Fellenius (2001) presented these methods for interpretation of pile capacity using static load tests. Our interpretations are based on the evaluation of 116 load tests. Unit side resistance was calculated and reviewed for each load test and categorized using three criteria of mobilization; (A) full, (B) partial and (C) linear. This study specifically focuses on load tests that showed fully mobilized unit side resistance behavior (Criteria A). The three methodologies were applied assuming Criteria (A) load tests were mobilized to 50% of their measured values. Subsequent comparisons of each extrapolation were then compared against the full measured values for each test and generally showed good agreement. INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that conducting load tests such as standard top-down tests or bi-directional (i.e. O- cell) tests can help designers understand load-settlement behavior and the nominal resistance of drilled shaft foundations. These load testing methods provide the advantage of confirming design assumptions as well as improving the reliability of the foundation design. The potential cost savings from the application of these methods for mid to large size projects is self-evident. For example, in a recent project in Northern Nevada, an O-cell test on a 6.9 ft diameter, 114.8 ft length drilled shaft imposed an initial cost of $125k to the project, resulting in a 15% reduction on the total foundation cost; equivalent to $1.3 million in overall savings (Pease, 2014). However, the costs of implementing such methods on smaller projects can be prohibitively expensive (Hagerty et al, 2016). Despite the clear advantages of drilled shaft load testing, the current practice is not without limitations. Performing load tests on large-diameter drilled shafts with high capacities is a challenge considering the significant loads required to fully mobilize the capacity of such foundations. In some cases, the feasibility of these tests is impractical because the associated initial cost is not guaranteed to outweigh the final savings. As a result, large scale load tests are sometimes ruled out from the design phase of projects. Furthermore, in the majority of load tests the magnitude of loads applied are specifically selected to not approach failure, so the shafts can be used in the future foundation system (i.e. production shafts). This practice of field testing restricts our knowledge of the true capacity of the drilled shaft at failure; hence the nominal resistance remains unknown.

"Saponite is a valuable marketable product widely used foundry, metallurgy and construction, in the chemical, food and consumer goods industries, in medicine, and in agriculture.The feasibility of producing of high-quality construction materials with enhanced physical-chemical and decorative characteristics from saponite-containing products has been given a scientific basis and experimentally validated. The compressive strength of the samples in the sintering temperature range of 800-1000 ?? varied between 35 and 80.9 MPa; the bending strength 8 and 26.7 MPa, which is superior to the high-grade ceramic bricks of the M-300 brand. It has been established that the saponite-containing product obtained using the electrochemical separation of process water has a high sorption capacitance relatively the heavy-metal ions such as nickel and copper (40.7 and 99.8 mg/g, respectively). As a result of sintering at 750 ?? the sorption capacity of the sorbent for the nickel and copper ions increased to 194.2 and 212.8. Using the XRD and SEM with energy-dispersive spectroscopy studies, we diagnosed the metal-containing phases and validated the metal sorption mechanism.This study opens up the possibility of practical realization of the saponite-containing product as high-quality building materials and heavy-metal sorbents while addressing the issue of process water treatment. INTRODUCTION The Lomonosov deposit of the Archangelsk diamondiferous province accommodates 10 kimberlite pipes. The anticipated volume of diamond-bearing ore and dump rock to be removed before reaching the open-pit mining limit is 300 mln t (Karpenko, 2009; Bezborodov, etal. 2003). Rock in the deposit is almost completely displaced by clay minerals, predominantly saponite, amounting to 90% in the vent facies (Karpenko, 2009)."

"The aim of NPO RIVS research and practice activities is to minimize impact of the mineral processing plants (MPP) on environment by using new concentration methods, high-technology equipment, implementation of engineering solutions directed to reduce emission of polluting substances (PS) into atmosphere, application of low-waste technologies, decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater source for process needs. In our studies environmental safety of mineral flotation is provided through technologies using highly selective chemicals, that leads not only to reducing reagent consumption, and production of saleable products of high content of extracted minerals, but also to reducing pollutant emissions, decreasing supply of surfactants (SAA) in natural geosystems, primarily, in ground and surface waters. Decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater sources for process needs can be achieved by using closed circuits and waste water treatment for further use in process operations, recycled water conditioning to obtain optimum quality parameters for process operations of concentration. Concentration in water (wet processing), tailings dewatering and semidry and dry (filtration cake) stockpiling in tailing ponds, efficient dust-collecting systems contribute to pollutant emission reduction. Use of mineral wastes – concentration tailings as a source of valued components, facilitates efficient use of natural resources and reduces wastes and its impact on natural ecosystems due to smaller areas of damaged lands during waste products disposal. Process and engineering solutions of NPO RIVS that allow diminishing impact of MPP on natural environment (NE) have been implemented in mining and processing complexes of Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Kirghizia and Mongolia. Compliance with environmental safety requirements contributes to enhancement of mineral processing and sustainable mineral development.INTRODUCTION Mining and processing complexes have a significant impact on environment as a result of extraction and recovery of mineral resources, landscape changes, waste disposal and, as a consequence, pollution of soils, surface and underground water sources. Therefore, the aim of the operation of the mineral processing enterprises in its research and practical activities is to reduce impact on environment due to new beneficiation technologies, high-technology equipment, implementation of engineering solutions directed to reduce emissions of polluting substances (PS) into atmosphere, use of low-waste technologies, decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater source for process needs. Compliance with the requirements of environmental safety encourages advancement of mineral processing technologies and sustainable mineral development. Concentration in water, tailings dewatering and semidry and dry (filtration cake) stockpiling in tailing ponds, efficient dust-collecting systems contribute to pollutant emission reduction. The physical geometry of a charge has a direct correlation to the geometry of the shock wave. This relationship appears strongest within the boundaries of the visible fireball. As the shock wave propagates outward past the limits of the fireball, the theory states that the geometry of the shock wave should even out and become more spherical. This paper investigates pressure vs. time at two distances, one ‘Near Field’ at the extent of the fireball and one ‘Far Field.' The two Fields were instrumented with three free-Field pressure probes from PCB oriented at 0, 45, and 90 degrees to the front face of the charge, in the same horizontal plane as the charge. This orientation allows for the comparison of the shock wave from the face and vertices of the charge. All the pressure sensors were connected to a Data Acquisition System (DAS) recording at 2 million samples per second (2MS/s). Two high-speed cameras, a Phantom and an MREL Ranger II, recorded the detonations for qualitative examination of the fireball, and the shock wave. Three charge geometries were used and compared to the shock propagation of a sphere. The other geometries tested are cylinders, cubes, and tetrahedrons. Charges were made from a PETN based sheet explosive. In the Near Field, a lower pressure is observed along charge vertices with highest pressures from each face. In the Far Field, vertices record a higher pressure, possibly due to the shock waves from the adjacent faces intersecting, indicating that shock pressures do not always even out in the Far Field. This paper will describe the methodology and findings of this experiment and attempt to determine causality for trends in the data gathered.

"Commercially introduced in 2004, the SAGDesign™ test has today proved its efficiency for sizing SAG mills for a wide variety of ores, from very soft to very hard ones. The interest of building a model using the SAGDesign™ test specific energy is the introduction of such a model into a complete process simulator making it possible to predict a complete material balance. The developed model compares the required specific energy with the energy provided by the mill. This energy calculation is derived from the Austin Power Formula. The specific energy provided by the test is corrected, using various parameters, such as the Ball Mill Work Index, to take into account the true operating conditions, the feed and product sizes. The core of this model allows the determination of the product d80 using the mill geometry, its operating conditions and of course the SAGDesign™ test results. To be included in a simulator, the model must also predict the overall size distribution of the SAG mill discharge. Assumptions to answer this point are presented here. The model has been implemented in the USIM PAC simulator. It is used either to predict the product size distribution for a given SAG mill, but also to size a SAG mill for getting a required reduction ratio. INTRODUCTION Over the last few years several types of new comminution machines have been introduced in the market. The most notable newcomer was the HPGR (Morley, 2006). But, even when these machines have some advantages, they have not earned the trust of the mining industry. That is why the established technologies still being the first choice. And, in comminution, that first choice are SAG and ball mills. The design of ball mills has been well understood for a long time. The Bond Ball Mill Work Index is the standard test which helps to describe the ore in terms of energy requirements for milling. Unfortunately, the development of an equivalent test to characterize the ore subject to SAG milling has taken some time. As of today, several tests are available in the market, like the MacPherson test, the MinnovEX SAG Power Index (SPI™), the JK Drop Weight Test, the SMC Test® and the SAGDesign™ test (Verret et al., 2011). The SAGDesign™ test, developed by John Starkey in Canada in the early 2000s (Starkey et al., 2008, 2015), has become one of the standards to assess the grindability of an ore in a SAG mill. One of its advantages is the reduced sample mass needed to perform it, hence, the reduced cost. The second one is that the output of the test is straightforward, it is the energy required to grind the ore between two sizes. Because of this energetic approach, the results provided by the test can be directly applied to size a new mill or to assess the performance of an existing mill."

Deepsea Mining will soon become a reality with Nautilus Minerals getting their equipment ready to mine SMS at Solwara 1 off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The vertical transport system (VTS) adopted by Nautilus consists of a riser hanging ‘freely’ from the mining production vessel with a lifting pump unit suspended at its lower end. A compliant jumper connects the pump to the seabed crawler without restraining its movements. In this free-hanging VTS arrangement, the vessel can be re-positioned to follow the crawler should it want to extend the mining area and start stretching the jumper. A recently proposed alternative to this is a free-standing VTS whereby the riser is grounded on the seabed with a base and maintained in an upright position by distributed buoyancy modules or a buoyancy tank at the top. A compliant jumper connects the seabed crawler to the riser base, and another connects the riser top to the vessel. In this free-standing arrangement, the entire VTS can be lifted clear of the seabed for relocation to a new mining area. This paper will describe the important features of the two options and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in respect of riser dynamic behavior, water depth, weather and mining windows, pump maintenance, installation and retrieval, continency measures, etc. The two systems will also be appraised separately for mining SMS and SMnN deposits.

The interest in investigating the processing characteristics of mineral deposits in Norway has seen an upsurge in the last decade. One of the major areas of interest is a huge copper deposit, operated by NUSSIR ASA located in the Repparfjord Tectonic Window in the caledonides of west Finnmark. This study reports analysis of ore from the deposit for development and modifications in the flotation flowsheet for the NUSSIR ASA copper ore. The mineralogical characterization for the ore sample was achived by optical microscopy and Zeiss automated mineralogy while grinding characteristics were tested using Bond Index tests. The results confirmed the presence of Cu minerals in the form of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite in the samples, which are mainly liberated in the – 105 µm size range. The majority of non-liberated copper sulphides associated with silica and the carbonates varies from 3 to 28 percent in the –250 µm samples . It is also observed that the copper minerals are uniformly distributed in all size ranges. Selective flotation of NUSSIR copper ore was performed in different size fractions with a motive to identify the correct liberation size and thus to obtain a copper concentrate meeting the quality requirements. The flotation experiments are essentially performed in two stages: the rougher and the cleaner stage. Mass balance calculations were performed showing that approximately 88 percent of copper can be obtained at the end of the process. Ultimately, overall circuit copper recoveries ranged between 83.5 to 88.1 % with a concentrate grade of 35 to 48 % Cu.

"This paper introduces the mineralogical analysis of certain polymetallic copper-zinc ore in China with the aim of improving the flotation process. The main valuable elements, mineral phases and compositions of run-of-mine ore were inspected by the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and chemical analysis. For a deep known of the old process defects, Mineral Liberation Analysis system (MLAs) was employed to investigate the minerals liberation degree of selected key slurry points. Analysis results show that the run-of-mine ore belongs to the original copper-zinc polymetallic symbiotic ore at low oxidative level, which mainly contains 0.16% Cu, 4.43% Zn and 0.88% Sn. Gangue minerals are mainly silicate minerals, and zinc mineral is sphalerite. MLAs test illustrates that about 86% sphalerite has been dissociated in zinc flotation feed. In the current flotation process, over grinding of sphalerite monomer and insufficient liberation of intergrowths are the key problems need to be solved imminently. Up to this point, a new process consisted of two steps roughing unit is submitted in this research. It contributes two positive effects on zinc flotation performance: (i) separating sphalerite monomer timely to decrease overgrinding; (ii) improving zinc minerals intergrowths liberation efficiency. Flotation results indicate that the zinc concentrate grade increased 0.90% and the recovery improved 0.96% in the new flotation processINTRODUCTION Mineralogical analysis mainly focusses on solving mineralogy problems in minerals processing, assisting in minerals behaviors prediction and control for separation engineering (Falkovich, et al., 2001; Hillier, et al., 2003; Schouwstra and Smit, 2011). Process defects searching becomes its ordinary work, and flotation optimization appears to be its targets gradually. For example, Lucky Friday mine company (Idaho America) fails to obtain qualified lead concentrate as the change of ore properties (Nadoll, et al., 2011). Mineralogical analysis ascertains that there are too many dissociated sphalerite, pyrite and gangue particles exist in lead concentrate. According to this, more cleaning units are added to solve problems effectively. Kanowna Belle mine (Australia) takes a flash circuit in operation successfully with the aim of optimize flotation process, under the helps of mineralogical analysis and industrial test (Newcombe, et al., 2013). Lotter N.O. (2011) gives a deep description on how mineralogical data assisting mineral processing engineers to design and optimize flowsheet. For decades, quantitative and automated mineralogy techniques (Andersen, et al., 2009; Gu, et al., 2012; Oghazi, et al., 2009; Yu, et al., 2007) get well developed and hugely improve the veracity and repeatability of minerals properties measurement. Among these, MLAs (Gu, 2003) provided by JKMRC (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center) is critically acclaimed all over the world. This analysis system can measure mineral phases composition and content, particles size, minerals occurrence and liberation degree directly."

"In view of the present situation that the traditional environment friendly depressants for galena aren’t very effective in the separation of mixed concentrate including copper sulfide and lead sulfide, this research describes a new environment friendly depressant PD-1 and investigates its effects and mechanism in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena. This study is carried out through flotation tests, analysis of infrared spectra and absorption measurements. It is shown that when O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z200) is used as collector, chalcopyrite and galena can be separated in the presence of PD-1 under appropriate conditions. Therefore, it can be concluded that PD-1 has an excellent depression ability and great selectivity for galena. Meanwhile, analysis of infrared spectra demonstrates that PD-1 can strongly absorb on the galena surface by chemical interaction with Pb2+, while it hardly absorbs on the chalcopyrite surface. In addition, the results of absorption measurements reveal that competitive adsorption occurs on the galena surface between PD-1 and Z200, PD-1 can block the absorption of Z200 on the galena surface. However, PD-1 has a little effect on the absorption of Z200 on the chalcopyrite surface under above conditions. What’s more, the hydrophilic groups of PD-1 molecules can make galena effectively depressed. The results of mechanism analysis are in accordance with those of flotation tests.INTRODUCTION In the processing of copper-lead sulfide ores, the process, copper increase and lead reduction (Zhang et al., 2017) after reagents removal of rough concentrate produced by mixed flotation of chalcopyrite and galena, is usually adopted. However, as a result of tight symbiosis and the similar flotability of chalcopyrite and galena, the separation is difficult (Hu and Feng, 2006). There are 3 kinds of depressants for galena in the separation of chalcopyrite and galena concentrate,including dichromate, sulfite and combined depressants of organic or inorganic reagents (Wei, 2012). As dichromate would cause serious environmental pollution, it is gradually banned to be used in industry (Xu et al., 2017; Lin et al., 2017). what’s more, due to the need of acidic slurry, using sulfite is not conductive to the maintenance of equipment and stable production(Wang, 1999). As for the combined depressants, they also have disadvantages of complex pharmaceutical system and no ideal separation effect (Wei and Sun, 2008). Therefore, the development of new safe and effective depressants for galena is a research focus for researchers in the minerals processing (Chen, 2000). In this paper, a new type of organic depressant PD-1 is applied to the copper-lead separation process of ""copper increase and lead reduction"" using Z200 as the collector. In addition, the performances and mechanism of its depression to galena are studied emphatically."

"To date, several studies have been performed on the static mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. There have also been more recent studies on the relation between scan strategy, texture, and mechanical properties of SLM metals and composites. However, there is a huge knowledge gap in the available literature regarding texture and mechanical behavior of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy under high strain rates. Therefore, in this study, dynamic mechanical behavior of AlSi10Mg_200C alloy manufactured by DMLS technique was investigated at high strain rates ranging from 900/s to 1700/s using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Texture using X-ray diffraction technique of the initial samples were measured. The yield strength, peak flow stress, and ductility increased in all samples with increase of strain rate. TEM studies have also revealed evidence of continuous dynamic recrystallization in grains after 900/s–1700/s strain-rate tests. A Taylor polycrystal crystal plasticity constitutive model was then developed to capture and predict the texture evolution and mechanical response under dynamic loading, using plastic work as a critical parameter for the onset of recrystallization.INTRODUCTION Additive manufacturing (AM) powder techniques are among the fastest advancing breakthroughs in manufacturing in recent years, defined by a bottom-up layer by layer process of joining with energy input from lasers or electron beam (Herzog et al., 2016; Gibson et al., 2015). Among alloys fabricated by SLM, AlSi10Mg is of high interest to industry and academia due to its low density, high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance, making this alloy a viable contender for aerospace, automotive, and marine applications. Circumstances such as car crash or bird aircraft strike hazards subject potential additively manufactured AlSi10Mg parts to impact loadings. This drives an interest in understanding and predicting dynamic behaviour of these alloys. AlSi10Mg is the AM counterpart of A360 die-cast aluminum, which possess hypoeutectic microstructure (Li et al., 2015). Up to the present time, many studies have presented the mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg alloy. The mechanical properties and microstructure of AlSi10Mg produced by selective laser melting (SLM) or DMLS techniques can be controlled using different parameters, such as feedstock powder (Asgari et al., 2017), and process parameters (Olakanmi et al., 2015). The microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg can also be controlled using post heat treatment after SLM process Li et al., 2016). The mechanical properties of SLM-AlSi10Mg are sensitive to strain rate and can both change under quasi-static (Rosenthal et al., 2017) and high strain rates (Asgari et al., 2018). However, a significant knowledge gap in available literature regarding modeling these behaviours, and especially micromechanical modeling of dynamic behaviour."

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. "The objective of this work is the scientific justification and development of efficient and environmentally-friendly method of bulk concentrate preparation for selection with application of microbiological practices. This research suggests to apply Pseudomonas Japonica bacterial culture to the bulk concentrate before the selection circuit in order to clear the surface of sulphides from the xanthate skin. It is also suggested to apply bacterial consortium Ochrobactrum ?nthropi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa JCM 5962 for desorption of diesel residual concentrations. High-efficient and environmentally friendly method of copper-molybdene and lead-zinc bulk concentrate selection was developed based on theoretical and experimental research work with application of microbiological practices. In comparison with conventional methods (steaming, sodium sulphide washing) the above suggested bio-technological method of bulk concentrate preparation before selection cycle will allow to reduce material and power expenditures, and it is also environmentally friendly. INTRODUCTION High-efficient selection of sulphide bulk concentrate is gained exclusively after collecting agent is removed from mineral surface. Therefore, the problem of bulk concentrate preparing before the selection cycle is acute, since the further technological parameters of the subsequent separation depends on the effectiveness of pulp preparation. Existing traditional ways of bulk concentrate preparation. such as washing or steaming, are characterized by high energy and material costs in industrial conditions [1,2]. The microbiological treatment before separation of the bulk concentrate into different kind of concentrates appear one of perspective processes for treatment of bulk concentrates [3,4]. At the present time, the world practice of processing mineral raw materials demonstrates the wide application of technologies using microorganisms: bacterial leaching and oxidation, purification of industrial wastewater. This is due to the fact that biotechnological methods are environmentally safe, low-cost, and suitable for refining complex ores and raw materials of industrial origin."
