Exiting WW2, the potential of nitrates and hydrogen peroxide for application as industrial explosives both became known. The technology stream advanced the development and uptake of nitrate-based explosives to the point that they are the current global standard for blasting. Recently environmental issues are influencing the strategic agenda of extractive industries. The mid-2010s saw renewed interest in hydrogen peroxide explosives to eliminate NOx fume. Carbon reduction initiatives in the 2020s provided additional impetus to investigate hydrogen peroxide-based explosives. Hypex Bio is at the forefront of developing and delivering bulk gas sensitized Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) for blasting. HPE consists of hydrogen peroxide along with smaller amounts of fuel and emulsifier. The consistency of HPE is similar to industry- standard nitrate-based emulsions. It is compatible with existing priming and initiation systems. HPE does not contain nitrates and thereby does not produce post blast nitrous oxide fumes nor discharge of nitrates or ammonia to mine water. Importantly, HPE contributes to reduction in total carbon emissions as compared to nitrate-based explosives.

The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume XI of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.

"Starting from fundamental principles of colloid-hydrodynamic theory of disperse systems we have shown that application of strongly non-uniform hydrodynamic fields allows to achieve not only faster rates of flocculation of suspension, but also supports significant improvements in the quality of clarified water and separation characteristics of solid phase. Specifically, it has been experimentally proven that the new treatment method based on these principles (then termed as ""ultra-flocculation"") allows:•,Increase the output of thickeners and pressure filters by 1,5-1,7 times;•,Decrease solids fall through into the filtrate in the process of vacuum filtration by 2¬3,5 times;•,Improve the rate of purification of water phase in the upright thickener by 1,5-1,9 times;•,Decrease flocculant consumption by 1,5-3 times;•,Increase the effective operational life time of cloth filters by 3-4 times;•,Ensure sustainable operation of separation equipment, i.e. decrease the sensitivity of process to variation in suspension concentration, as well as to variations of suspension composition and dispersion characteristics;•,Apply flocculant solutions of concentration 2-3 times higher, thus increasing the capacity of equipment used for solutions preparation."

"The ever increasing demand for cleaner steels with low inclusion content has highlighted the limits of our current knowledge for controlling and predicting inclusion agglomeration and removal during liquid steel processing. Key knowledge gaps in this area result from the complex nature of the problems associated with measuring and visualizing the phenomena studied. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows for continuous in situ observation of micron-size samples in real time, at high resolution, under conditions relevant to the steelmaking process. This paper summarizes some of recent CSLM applications in our laboratory to illustrate the methods of analyzing transient behavior. The reaction between inclusions and slag is given as an example. The dissolution rate of calcium aluminate inclusions in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags has been studied at elevated temperatures: 1500, 1550 and 1600°C as well as thermodynamic/kinetic analysis. It is found that total dissolution time decreased with increasing temperature. The rate limiting steps are discussed. It is shown that the diffusion through a product layer is responsible for dissolution at 1500°C. At higher temperature, dissolution is most likely controlled by both boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction at the slag-inclusion interface. In this paper, the evidence for and against the theory will be critically examined and repercussions of the theory to steel refining processes will be discussed.INTRODUCTION Inclusion formation during liquid steel refining is an unavoidable consequence of current ladle steelmaking processes. The nature and quantity of the inclusions formed in steel is critical in steelmaking, as it affects both productivity through clogging, and downstream physical properties of the steel. It is therefore crucial to better understand and control the formation, agglomeration and dissolution behaviour of inclusions in a slag in order to improve the removability of inclusions from liquid steel. Most research (Sandhage & Yurek, 1988; Sandhage & Yurek, 1990a; Sandhuge & Yurek, 1990b; Sandhuge, 1991) relevant to the kinetics of inclusion removal has been obtained by using a technique where simulated inclusion material (ceramic rods) is dipped in slag and the dissolution rate is measured. While much has been learned using this approach, the difference in scale from bulk materials to inclusions is likely to have a significant bearing on the dissolution kinetics of inclusions in a slag and will certainly result in a very different influence of capillary effects. Further, the data obtained using an indirect (dip test) procedure relies on a comparison of the initial and final conditions of a sample rather than in-situ observation which can be achieved in a confocal microscope in real time."

The True Pipe® in-line sampler was developed in an attempt to address the need for a mechanically reliable and correctly designed sampler to suit one-dimensional pressurised slurry pipelines, often found in metallurgical process plants but for which no reliable and representative sampling solution as yet exists.The design, whose operation is based on the principle of symmetry, is described by Dominique François-Bongarçon (2005) with the synchronous opening and closing of relevant valves. It representatively isolates portions of the particulate material stream at predetermined intervals for effective extraction of primary increments for subsequent sample compositing.Theory of Sampling applicable solutions have proven elusive in flowing pressurised particulate material streams, with various attempts to date not having formulated a viable, mechanically reliable and acceptable design.Compliance to sampling theory is critical, and a number of tests were conducted where certain operating parameters were altered to determine their influence and sensitivity on sampling representativeness.The results of the initial series of tests performed on a carefully designed rig are presented, with additional work discussed for necessary investigation in the near future.Getting closer to a robust, economic and correct design for this challenging application in the minerals industry may now not be that far away. Plant management staff will see improved metallurgical mineral balances around their process plants and significantly reduced sampling discrepancies, particularly in tailings applications. Arsenopyrite is often associated with sulphides like pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena in refrac-tory gold ores. Selective flotation of arsenopyrite from associated sulphides is desirable for effective gold extraction when the gold is preferentially associated with the arsenopyrite matrix. By contrast, presence of arsenopyrite in flotation tailings poses a serious environmental threat due to arsenic dissolution. To prevent arsenic contamination from the mine wastes, it would be more economical and environmentally beneficial to remove this mineral during the froth flotation step. Use of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in the detoxification of arsenic containing sulphides is outlined in this pa-per. Biomodulation using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans resulted in the preferential depression of pyrite from arsenopyrite. By suitable conditioning with cells and collector effective separation of arsenopyrite from pyrite was achieved. Biomodulation with wild cells did not yield separation of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite. However, bacterial affinity could be induced to a desired sulfide mineral through environmentally controlled adaptation techniques. Through the use of arsenic-adapted bacterial cells, selective removal of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite was readily achieved.

Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. "The mining of tabular deposits accounts for a significant portion of modern production in both underground hard rock and especially, soft rock mining. There is a large discrepancy between the availability of tabular reserves and the amount of development of these deposits, particularly when the deposit has a dip of around 25-50 degrees. This project studied the technical and practical barriers to the mining of these deposits through modern and historical case studies. The primary technical barriers to the development of these deposits are material movement and roof support. The study of historical attempts overcome these barriers and why they failed allowed us to research the possibility of implementing modern technology on previously unsuccessful methods. By modifying some common mining methods, some of these deposits can be mined at only a marginal increase in cost and using readily available equipment. These modified mining methods could make previously underdeveloped deposits to become viable. INTRODUCTION Tabular deposits are defined as orebodies that extend at least hundreds of meters along two dimensions, and a substantially smaller amount along another [1]. Moderately bedded tabular deposits are mined less often than their more horizontal counterparts due to the technical issues they present. These issues often cause lower productivity, higher cost, and more frequent accidents. Moderate dip is a less well defined term; but in this case, it will refer to any deposit which has a dip of at least 20°. This paper will focus on deposits that dip around 25°-50° and are deep enough to require underground excavation methods. These deposits are too steep for most conventional methods yet not steep enough for gravity fed methods to work efficiently. In some cases, this dip range is also referred to as intermediate or steeply dipping. The types of deposits most likely to fall into this category are sedimentary bedded deposits such as coal, trona, evaporates, placers, and other alluvial deposits. Some other types of deposits can fall into this category as well. These include some of the metal reefs such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which was deposited by lava flows, but is tabular. Some areas have dips that fall into the moderately inclined category. There are also some metamorphic deposits such as slate or marble that can have dips of more than 20°. The dip angle of these deposits can cause several challenges. Ore movement becomes more difficult as the exceeds the limits of conventional conveyors, rubber-tired, or tracked vehicles. At the same time the dip is below the angle of repose of the material. This prevents gravity assisted haulage, as the ore and waste will not run downhill by itself. Another common problem in moderately inclined underground mines is roof support. The dip angle can increase the risk of pillar and support failure. This is due to slippage between rock layers, non-perpendicular support of the vertical stresses, and slippage of standing supports. The inclination leads to stresses that are not usually found in typical horizontally bedded deposits. These stresses may require larger pillars that may reduce ore recovery below profitable levels."

A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites. INTRODUCTION Mining at Mindola Mine, Rokana Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited is the deepest on the Zambian Copperbelt. Mining extends to 1150 metre depth so far and the present plans extend to 1500 metres, although reserves exist below this level. Mindola Mine is the major producer of copper/cobalt ore at Rokana Division and produces approximately 200,000 tonnes of copper/cobalt ore per month. A standard open stoping method is the only method used for mining with minor variations in positioning drilling drives and other development, figure 1. The standard main haulage interval is 75m but in flat dipping areas the full stope height is split into two or three panels. In 1970 severe mining problems were experienced when mining deeper than 850111 below surface. The main problems included: - Heavy support requirements in drilling drives near stope face. - Premature closure of blast holes necessitating pre-charging of the holes with explosives immediately after drilling and well before the day of blasting. - Severe bumping and spitting due to rock movements on drive surfaces and remotely within the rock mass under high stress. - Low mining efficiency due to dilution from the waste hangingwall. - These stress related factors also caused some premature detonations of precharged but unprimed blast holes which became a serious safety hazard. A number of alternatives have been considered to overcome these problems. A search for leas sensitive explosives to avoid the premature detonation problem has been partially successful, however, the need for a method of reducing stress levels at the mining face is still considered essential as the mine goes deeper. This paper describes experiments with Regional Support Pillars as a method of reducing stresses at the mining face.

The most commonly applied international environmental policies and guidelines are those established by The World Bank. Lenders require a review by an independent engineer to determine that the feasibility study plans have been developed in accordance with the applicable environmental commitments. Lender agreements require independent engineer evaluation of environmental performance through the construction phase and initial operations phase of the project, culminating in the issuance of an "Environ- mental Completion Certificate."

Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. That the governor is hereby authorized to appoint a commission of seven persons, to be known as the industrial accidents commission-two of whom shall be employers of labor, two of whom shall be employees in either mines or industrial establishments of this Commonwealth, or duly accredited representatives thereof, two of whom shall be learned in the law, and one of whom shall be a person skilled and experienced in making investigations-to inquire into the causes and results of industrial accidents in the mines, mills, factories, stores, and upon the railroads, street railways, ships, wharves, and in all industrial establishments, and in all other places where men, women, and children are employed in manual labor in this Commonwealth; to study the most advanced methods for safe-guarding against these accidents; to inquire into the subject of fair compensation for those who are injured in these accidents, and for the families of those who shall be killed as a result thereof; and to study the operation and effect of the Workmen's Compensation Law of 1913. SEC. 2. The chairman of said co~mission shall be designated by the governor, and the person named on said commission as a skilled and experienced investigator shall be the secretary of the commission, The commission shall have power to employ such legal counsel and other officers and employees as it may deem necessary to properly perform its duties. SEC. 3. The secretary of said commission shall receive an annual salary of $2,400 and his actual necessary expenses; and the other members of the commission shall receive no compensation for their services, but shall be allowed their actual traveling and other necessary expenses. The salaries of any other persons employed by the commission shall be fixed by it.

Currently, it is very difficult to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the status and production process of a construction site. As a rule, companies depend on reports from on-site experts. There is no end-to-end digitalization due to the mobility of equipment and ever-changing locations. Equipment from different manufacturers, especially in special foundation engineering, is highly specialized. Any data collected by this equipment is recorded in proprietary formats and made available on the manufacturers' platforms. This exacerbates the situation, making simple analysis of performance indicators impossible. Most functions such as construction diaries, equipment utilization analyses, etc. are implemented only as standalone solutions. This does not allow for prompt visualization and intervention in critical process sequences because the construction site process is usually managed using a cost-based method. Furthermore, special foundation engineering requires a high level of expertise in an extremely wide range of construction processes. In this article, the results from a set of non-proprietary performance analysis tools are presented using numerous practical examples. Once a construction element is completed, the equipment data is immediately transferred to the platform using the latest cloud technology. Because the data is normalized, construction progress can be documented immediately, even for mixed equipment fleets. Bottlenecks can be immediately detected by visualizing the current performance of the production process, which is broken down into individual steps. Modern analyses of this equipment data improve quality, thereby providing better information about current performance. These sets of tools are essential for changing from the current monetary or cost-based method of process management to time- and bottleneck-oriented management. This makes it much easier to identify the critical path during projects. The article shows that processes can be documented and managed.

Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool to identify and display risks that have the potential for an undesired hazardous event. The output of the analysis are bow-tie diagrams, which are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk. Contrary to their simplicity, a proper bow-tie diagram that maintains its usefulness and clear communication is difficult to build. Over two decades assisting Major Hazard Facilities with bow-tie analysis for Safety Cases, several common mistakes have been identified. This paper aims to highlight those issues with examples and provide improvement strategies. A sample of the most common mistakes are: - overly complicated risk analysis - poorly scoped and defined terms - poor descriptions and justifications - identifying too many dependent controls. Overly complicated risk analysis leads to wasted time in obtaining data for little gain. The bow-tie diagram is only a model. Effort should be redirected into identifying and managing controls that will make a tangible difference to site risk. Broad scopes lead to enormous and confusing bow-tie diagrams for both the user and the workshop team. Defining the scope of the study, the consequence severity of interest and critical control characteristics creates focused workshops and targeted analysis. With more definitive scope, there may be more bow-tie diagrams, however, they are succinct and specific. Well described causes are imperative for clear communication to users, regulators and future bowtie review workshop groups. It is best to use common wording structures and explain the event stepby- step. Also, clearly document any likelihood calculations and use data references where applicable. Identifying all possible controls creates a false sense of security that there are many layers of protection. In reality, most controls are dependent on a single system or person and could all be compromised from a single failure. A definition of a ‘bow-tie’ control is required whereby it must be independent from other controls. Improving the bow-tie analysis process will assist operators in developing meaningful and ‘operational’ bow-tie diagrams to support risk management systems and practices.

"The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Civil engineering education relies on traditional methods of teaching, comprising mostly of deductive instruction by presenting the theory, followed by applications. This paper presents an alternative way for teaching foundation design to senior students, introducing a more inductive approach. The students are presented with a project/game adapted to a real-world problem at the beginning of the course. They are asked to identify the correct steps and methods throughout the lectures, for reaching an appropriate solution that they document and present at the end of the course. To make the project more enjoyable, the project has the format of a game where the students compete with each other on completing the task faster and more efficiently. The goal of this teaching approach is to enhance the ability of the students for problem solving and the engineering way of thinking, while playing a game. In the end, the students were requested to respond to a survey regarding the efficiency of this project/game on their learning. The results showed that students prefer more inductive methods for a design course, feeling that this project made them think more like engineers, while the ‘game’ twist of it made the whole course more fun. INTRODUCTION Most civil engineering courses are taught in 2019 the same way they used to be taught 40 years ago in the 80s. Classic methods are mostly deductive, where the instructor presents the theory first and then applications of that theory follow. Little or no attention is given initially to why the theory was developed or what are the problems it solves. The applications of the theory, and thus the purpose it serves, come only in the end and after methodologies have been presented, leading the students to show low interest in the material. As Albanese and Mitchell (1993) have reported, people are mostly motivated to learn things when they clearly see the need to know them. This explains the students’ little motivation that, if any, comes mainly from the fact that the material may be useful either in other courses or in their future careers. On the other hand, there are alternative inductive methods of teaching, where the role of the students is more active. A lot of researchers have highlighted the benefits of inductive methods in teaching engineering courses. Based on Prince and Fedler (2006), inductive methods include; a) inquiry-learning, b) discovery learning, c) problem and project-based learning (PBL), d) case-based teaching, and e) just-in-time learning. Inquiry-learning is maybe the most traditional method of inductive teaching/learning methods, where the instructor asks questions or poses problems and the students need to apply the theory they have learnt in order to find the solution (Bateman 1990; Prince 2004; Lee 2012). Similar to inquire-learning is the discovery learning, where students have to find the solution to a problem or answer to a question, while the instructor simply provides feedback to the students without guiding their efforts (Leonard 1988; Westbrook and Rogers 1994).
