The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating longwall panel and gate road layouts to increase coal recovery and reduce multiple-seam interactive problems. This report presents design practices for longwall mining multiple seams to provide mine planners and operators with practical guidelines for designing productive longwall mines. Key aspects of mine design that control longwall interactions are examined, including sequencing of seams, design of gate road pillars, and orientation of gate roads and longwall panels. Theories that describe stress transfer between multiple scams and the mechanics of interaction are addressed in relation to geology. Common longwall designs were further investigated using a boundary element model, MULSIM/NL. The model provided insight into relative stress transfer and distribution that occurs between longwall operations in multiple seams. Findings from the model show that (1) a longwall panel should be mined from the gob to the solid coal of an overlying mine, because the stress concentrations are lower; the approach angle should be kept under 30°; and (2) when mining in descending order, superpositioning gate roads usually produces the worst stress condition. To prevent this, the overlying isolated gate roads should be positioned from the centerline toward the headgate side of the underlying panel.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. "As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase the capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont Mining in Nevada was faced with such a need in its carbon-in-leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corp., tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop-in replacement screens using a three-dimensional screen panel. The synthetic pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade its urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing and other scalping applications.In spring 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick’s local area representative, met with Newmont to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the CIL train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, NV. The process was originally designed for about 12+ kt/d (13,000+ stpd) but the throughput has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned. Newmont now requires 14.5 kt/d (16,000 stpd) to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity, and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production.Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing’s oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging, and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and, thus, larger machines, screening media that does not blind or a combination of both.In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick had been working on a revolutionary threedimensional panel that would add nonblinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 in July of 2013. It was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

Flotation is the most efficient and preferred solid-solid separation method in mineral processing. However, enhanced production of high-grade concentrates at sufficiently high recovery still poses technological challenges to-day. A novel flotation method to produce final-grade concentrates from finely-ground ores in a single step is being developed and tested by CANMET. For the complex sulphide ores tested, grades are superior while recovery is considerably improved. Furthermore, concentrate production rates, at similar recoveries, are faster than for the conventional rougher-scavenger-cleaner configuration. This paper discusses the physical operating parameters affecting Cu-Zn flotation metallurgy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

GEOSCAN on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape in South Africa, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption, and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech’s experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani’s GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis.

The characterisation of iron ore from a materials handling point of view is paramount in order to provide the best possible design for the desired application and maximise equipment uptime at the lowest possible capital and operational expenditure. Problematic issues in materials handling applications often arise in the iron ore industry due to the high density of the ore as well as the abrasive nature of the product. One of the key issues encountered during the handling of iron ore is excessive wear due to either impact or sliding abrasion. The applications and equipment typically affected by accelerated wear issues are mass flow hoppers, transfer chutes and conveyor belts. These wear issues often result in unplanned down times and loss in production which can lead to a considerable loss in revenue. This paper provides an overview of the best practises in the materials handling characterisation of iron ore and discusses available techniques for the modelling of iron ore in applications where accelerated wear is experienced. The application is illustrated through a number of industry relevant case studies for which engineering design work was undertaken to successfully reduce the wear rates of different materials handling equipment.

"Today’s underground construction megaprojects are tremendous feats of engineering on a massive scale, excavating through ground conditions once thought impossible, using new and innovative contracting practices. But one important truth remains unchanged; projects are built by people. What separates winning projects from the rest? Great people, working in great organizations. In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. To sustain the circular economy, defence applications, and other renewable technologies, recycling rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical elements from their secondary resources is important. This cause has resulted in rigorous research and development for viable extraction and separation of REEs. Previously, Sm-Co recycling has been done with technologies, which fall under the categories of pyrometallurgy, physical separation, and hydrometallurgy. All these methods have limitations associated with energy, cost, and environment. Reportedly, the chemical leaching technology has successfully recovered and separated Sm-Co. Still, it has limitations associated with slow mass transfer and leaching kinetics, and there is a need to intensify the process to make it time efficient. This approach has also adversely impacted the environment by an extensive use of toxic, corrosive, non-selective, and expensive reagents. In this research study, chemical leaching of Sm-Co was performed using this new class of solvents, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), which fall under the category of ion metallurgy. Four different DESs were used, proven to be green, non-toxic, biodegradable, cheap, and selective for cobalt over samarium by 82% leaching conversion. To improve the slow mass transfer and leaching time, this new technology of resonant vibratory mixing (RVM) was also tested. RVM intensifies mixing by establishing near instantaneous, low energy mixing conditions through resonance. It has been shown to improve the adsorption kinetics and was tested for the leaching kinetics. Four combinations of DESs were prepared, which are made up of two quaternary salts: Choline Chloride and Tetra Butyl Ammonium Chloride, and three organic compounds: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol. These combinations were used for chemical leaching of Sm-Co with leaching factors of time, temperature, and type of DESs. After leaching, the samples were tested with and without resonant vibratory mixing with conditions of time, intensity (%), and type of DESs. Samples were analysed with Induced Coupled Plasma - Optical Spectroscopy (ICP - OES). Future work will involve a life-cycle assessment to assess the RVM technology with other conventional mixers, and an extensive study of DES properties to improve selective leaching.

Mining and tunnelling share many commonalities (eg confined working environments, excavation equipment and processes), but of significance is an overarching commitment to provide safe work conditions and environments. This includes reducing exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust and fumes, in particular Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), with methods that are environmentally sustainable. In mining, wet methods are common to suppress airborne contaminants, however these methods are reliant on water availability, can be less effective for respirable dust, can have implications for environmental water contamination and can increase maintenance on mining equipment. In contrast, the use of dust scrubbers that provide filtration of airborne contaminants are well established in the tunnelling industry and frequently used to provide spot extraction (dust control at the source) and act often as a complement to the main ventilation system. This paper sought to learn more about the advancements in tunnelling that could be readily applied to mining to improve health outcomes. The paper includes a review of literature and legislation related to health and sustainability and interviews with three respected, and experienced managers from the global tunnel construction industry. It is from these interviews that the focus of the paper turns to Sydney’s WestConnex underground tunnel network and the success of stage 3A M4-M5 construction link. The findings position dust scrubbers as integral to the overall project success as they enabled a Tunnel Production Line (TPL), where multiple stages of construction could take place simultaneously by controlling high volumes of dust at the source. The findings also suggest efficiencies of using mobile scrubbers, both track mounted and hydraulic stepping systems, to accompany road headers and other equipment throughout the excavation process. The findings have transferable applications to underground mining processes in which workers are exposed to high volumes of dust (eg drill and blast) or situations in which dust control at the source, mobility and flexibility offer value (eg room and pillar mining).

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual's carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man's best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don't need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

The Bureau of Mines devised and demonstrated a portable linear cutting tester that directly measures and records the in situ cutting forces required of continuous-mining machine picks to it coal in underground mines. It requires only two operators to transport and operate the tester, which can be assembled and operated through a complete test cycle within a single mine work shift. This report reviews the factors considered in the design and development of the tester and the results of its system verification testing at coal mine sites.

Mercury is present as trace contaminant in many raw materials for metallurgical plants. When such materials are treated with pyrometallurgical processes the mercury is volatilised. Mercury has a high vapour pressure, even at low temperatures, and therefore it is removed only partly by normal gas cleaning processes. The Boliden Norzink scrubbing process removes elemental mercury by converting it to calomel. It is widely used in the base metals industry. This paper gives examples of the application, and also outlines the background for the development of the process. Another technology developed by Boliden for mercury removal is the Selenium filter. This is a fixed bed filter based on the reaction between elemental gaseous mercury and selenium, by which mercury selenide, HgSe, is formed. The mercury selenide is a highly stable compound with extremely low solubility in water and very low vapour pressure. Mercury is removed selectively without any side reactions. Special applications for the selenium filter technology include mercury removal from gases containing sulphur dioxide and geothermal off-gases.

Maximising shareholder value is a widely stated strategic goal of many mining companies. Mining projects can be capital intensive and achieving good returns is essential to encourage future investment in the industry. Despite the widely accepted importance of shareholder value, the minerals industry is often accused of providing relatively poor returns when compared to other industries. There are many recent and well publicised examples of minerals companies that have failed to deliver value to their shareholders. There are numerous business improvement initiatives employed within the mining industry to assist mine operators improve performance. Some are more effective at creating value than others. Benchmarking is one technique that is commonly used to identify performance gaps and target and prioritise opportunities for improvement. However to be effective, Benchmarking must be used appropriately and result in actions that lead to measurable operational improvement. When conducting a Benchmarking project it is important to remember that the aim should be to improve value. For this to be achieved, the strategic goals must be incorporated into the process. This paper details a structured and comprehensive approach to conducting a successful Benchmarking project. Focusing on Benchmarking as a technique for measuring and improving operational performance in underground mines, the underlying drivers of best practice in underground mining are identified.
