One of the dewatering methods in mineral processing plant is filtration system. Disk filters are included the porous surface with pressure drop on both sides, Water in the pulp passes through the surface and solid particles remain as a cake on it. Wet concentrate production of magnetite processing plant at Golgohar Mining and Industrial Company with solid tonnage of 160 ton per hour and 49% solid amount contains 166 m3/h of water. In the present study, in addition to studying disc filter performance, the effective parameters on cake moisture were studied using Vacuum Bottom-Feed Leaf method (in the laboratory scale). Optimization was performed using the Taguchi method. The results showed that the cake moisture is reduced by increasing particle size and solid percentage (because of specific resistivity reduction), while the rate of cake formation and its thickness are increased. Also, it was found that by increasing pressure, the cake moisture is reduced and cake formation rate and its thickness are increased. In this study, the effect of fabric texture was also examined. Lowest cake moisture was obtained in condition of using compressed plain fabric with mono-multi filament fibres, pressure at 75kPa, solid percentage of 65 to 70, particle size (D80) equivalent to 123µm and disk rotation speed of 1.25 rpm.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

A study was made of the physical and chemical nature of silica minerals found as natural impurities in bentonites and montmorillonitic Fuller&apos;s earth clay products as well as in <10 micron dust from eight processing plants. The results show that the silica minerals present in these clay materials are totally encapsulated or encased in clay. No "free" silica minerals could be observed in SEM images of either granular or powder products or in dust samples collected for MSHA crystalline silica analysis. Silica minerals, such as quartz, are identifiable by SEM and EDS analysis only after removing the clay coatings by vigorous washing. After washing it can be observed that all crystalline quartz grains also have diagenetic overgrowths of what is probably opaline silica. The clay and opaline silica encapsulation of quartz plus the strongly hydro scopic nature of montmorillonite are believed to be responsible for there not being a single confirmed case of silicosis among workers in the subject plants after more than 65 years of production.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

Recently, a number of mine development projects have been setback by social, economic and, environmental circumstances that had not been seen before. Many of these problems do not always originate from direct mine pollution. Typical examples of these are· conflicts between the exploration company and the local residents, sudden objections just before the development is to begin, and unexpected tightening of environmental regulations. The common background to these problems is expanding global environmental awareness. This includes complex factors ·such as the expansion of exploration to remote regions, the brisk activities of environmental NGOs, the increase of international environmental laws and, governmental policy changes. Today, the range of issues concerning mine development is widening significantly. The participation of local residents arid NGOs in the development planning, together with the company and government, has become essential for smoothly carrying out mine projects and making them more beneficial for stakeholders. Introduction The common image of the environmental problem with respect to mining is direct mine pollution, such as the collapse of tailings dams, pollution from refineries, and acid mine drainage. All over the world, the mining industry has made large investments in capital and technology to solve and prevent mine pollution, and these efforts have been making steady achievements. However in recent years, new cypes of environmental problems which are not originating directly from mine pollution are emerging frequently. Most of the problems are concentrated at the exploration stage to early stage of development, which have less impact on the environment. In the worst case, mining project may be forced to cancel and could cause serious damage to the industry because they could not collect their investment. I would like to take a general view of the examples of new types of trouble, their characters, background, and strategies against these problems.

It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. This paper discusses the background and trends towards the elimination of conventional surface slurried TSFs, with examples presented of the management of black coal and other tailings, including those that are clay mineral-rich.CITATION:Williams, D J, 2015. Significant cost and construction benefits were obtained from performing a bi-directional static load test prior to construction on the Russell Street Bridge Replacement project in Missoula, Montana. The project utilized 24 drilled shafts to support two three-span bridges across the Clark Fork River. A bi-directional static load test (“BDSLT”) was performed on a large-diameter production shaft to demonstrate construction methods and confirm design assumptions. Subsurface conditions consisted of gravel with sand to a depth of 20 feet (6.1 m), underlain by gravel with sand, silt, cobbles, and occasional boulders. The test shaft had a nominal diameter of 5.9 feet (1.8 m), and an embedded length of 75.5 feet (23.0 m). The geotechnical engineer of record and the BDSLT test engineer collaborated to optimize the BDSLT jack assembly location within the test shaft, determine appropriate instrumentation locations, and plan the test protocol. The maximum applied test load was 10,707 kips (47.6 kN). Significant benefits were obtained from performing the BDSLT test, including 1) reducing each production shaft’s length by using a higher LRFD resistance factor allowed by having performed the testing, 2) using test-determined unit shaft resistances to evaluate and accept two production shafts that may have otherwise required remediation, and 3) providing the Montana Department of Transportation (and other designers) with increased presumptive unit resistance values in the gravel/cobble/boulder deposits. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project was constructed in Missoula, Montana for the Montana Department of Transportation (“MDT”). The original bridge was approximately 60 years old, and consisted of a two-lane, 420-foot-long (128-m), four-span, riveted steel plate girder design spanning the Clark Fork River. The bridge was due for replacement owing to its deteriorated state, and the need for increased traffic volume capability afforded by a four-lane structure. HDR was the structural engineer. The preferred bridge alternate was a 459-foot- long (140-m), three-span, welded steel plate girder design. The new bridge was designed to meet current standards in accordance with MDT bridge design and AASHTO LRFD criteria. The new bridge was constructed in phases to keep traffic open during construction.

"IntroductionSULPHUR production in Canada from all sources for the year 1953 amounted to about 375,000 tons. Except for 16,000 tons of elemental sulphur derived from natural gas, this production was in the form of by-product pyrites, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid. In the same year, Canadian industry imported 359,000 tons of elemental sulphur from the United States. The cost, including transportation charges, to Canadian consuming plants ranged from $35.00 to $45.00 per long ton, depending upon location.Although most of the sulphur consumed is used in the oxidized form it is often most convenient to buy sulphur in the elemental form, and convert it to sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in situ as required. This is because elemental sulphur is easily shipped and stored, weighs only half as much as an equivalent quantity of sulphur dioxide and one-third as much as the corresponding quantity of sulphuric acid, and is readily converted to these forms in a sulphur burner. A process, therefore, which could economically recover elemental sulphur from sulphide ores would be most attractive.Since the turn of the century, notable improvements have been made in extractive metallurgy, but until recently only limited attention has been paid to the possibilities of elemental sulphur recovery. This has been due to the plentiful supplies of cheaply mined Frasch sulphur which have been available on the world markets."

"Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/ communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, longrange transport of toxics, and the increasing influence of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multistakeholders.As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental management systems (EMS) have been introduced not only to meet the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO 14 001) is a common practice.Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities, and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a “license to operate.” This paper presents the structure of Cambior’s EMS and how it was adapted and implemented in the company’s operations in South America."

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of an investigation for developing and applying procedures for stabilizing excavations openings in highly yielding ground. The approach developed in this report involves nonlinear modeling of the progressive relaxation of the zones of rock mass around the excavations opening where Coulomb criterion of failure is exceeded. Stresses are calculated by using a computer code; Coulomb-failure condition is examined for both intact rock and joints (using strength parameters [~] and c). The rock mass in the failed zones is relaxed by reducing the Young&apos;s modulus of the rock based on an empirical formulation that is a function of the shape of the opening and the extent of the failed zone. In addition, the material in the failed zone is assigned reduced strength paramters 0&apos; and c&apos;. The limiting (or convergent) relaxed zone is obtained through an iterative process by manually changing the rock modulus and the strength parameters between iterations. Support pressures are computed by applying forces normal to the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the analysis of stability and support requirements for an entry in a longwall coal mine.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of gas in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and cleat characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a knowledge about the variation in their values over time are required for simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques to determine each of these, along with their time dependency, under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability, diffusion coefficient and the cleat aperture values are not constant as usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values as a result of changes in the microstructure of coal associated with release and flow of gas.

"Over the past 40 years, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has executed its mission “to bring together multi-disciplined individuals and organizations to find common ground and create a shared vision and consensus voice for continual advancement in the deep foundations industry”. Like DFI, micropile technology began a significant growth path in the mid-1980s. This paper highlights how DFI’s mission was executed in the deployment and expansion of micropile technology.INTRODUCTIONMicropiles are small diameter foundation elements constructed using specialty drilling and grouting methods. Micropiles have evolved since their introduction into the North American market in the 1970s from being lightly loaded (less than 30 kips) elements used primarily for remedial applications, to today’s high-capacity, often hybridized foundation systems, for both remedial and new-build projects. Micropiles now occupy a substantial market segment in North America.For 40 years, DFI has aimed to be the forum for discussion of all issues related to deep foundations design and construction. DFI now supports 21 technical committees and working groups on all deep foundations technologies and has expanded to include regional chapters in Europe, India and the Middle East.Several key steps are required for the successful execution of DFI’s mission, including identifying a need, engaging dedicated and knowledgeable people, developing effective vehicles and resources for information sharing, cultivating stakeholder contributions and advancements, stimulating influence/impact on deep foundations market, and expanding approaches to continue progress. Pile drivers in New York City (the original organizers of DFI) positively affected their market using these same steps: they recognized a specific need, gathered the people who could affect change, convened a discussion forum (which is common today, but was innovative at the time), defined tasks to address the issues, and influenced their market by improving means, methods and owner perception of their services. These forward thinking, proactive members created a mechanism for communication among all related parties that would advance the profession by improving safety, quality and value of pile driving construction.Micropile technology has evolved in the United States and around the world for the past four decades. The accumulated efforts of DFI and other, similar organizations such as The International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC) have contributed to this evolution. The advancement of the micropile industry – and consequently the micropile market – has been intimately tied to the execution of the mission of DFI."

1. Theory of Wet Dust Suppression Techniques Wet dust suppression is the utilization of a liquid for the control, reduction or elimination of airborne dust, or the suppression of such dust at its source. Effective control involves: a. The confinement of the dust within the dust producing area by a curtain of moisture. b. The wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture. c. The formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid. From the standpoint of effectiveness, however, it leaves much to be desired. As a result, a tech¬nique has been devised in which very small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with water to greatly enhance its dust suppression qualities. The terms "dust control compounds, wetting agents and surface active agents" are frequently used interchangeably. Although dust control compounds represent a specific type of wetting agent, a great many wetting agents are far from satisfactory for dust control. "Wetting Agents" is a broad category which covers such items as emulsifiers, solubilizers, detergents, foamers, penetrants, thickeners, etc. Dust control compounds, on the other hand, are carefully formulated blends in which one or more special surface active agents have been incorporated.

WAGES in the United States, in spite of the wage freeze, have increased materially. Overtime payments have become standard practice in almost all industries. Now efforts are being made to place wages on an annual basis, and if this is adopted, it will result in an increase in the cost of production. Organized labor today is more powerful than ever before; union membership is large and steadily increasing, and in many instances membership in the union is a prerequisite to employment. The treasuries of many unions are strong as a result of the large membership and full employment. The unions, therefore, today are in a much better position than ever before to carry on long strikes. Politically, too, the unions are more powerful today than they ever were. On the basis of their strength, one may expect that some of the demands that the labor unions will make in the not distant future will be granted. It is, therefore, quite evident that before long, particularly when the curtailment in war production reaches about 40 per cent, this country will be confronted with a serious labor problem.

Foundation underpinning is a common component of remediation schemes for distressed foundations on expansive soils. For many applications in expansive soil, micropiles have distinct advantages over other techniques. This paper will concentrate on the design and construction of micropiles in expansive soil. It discusses the nature of building distress and the relationship between foundation movement and soil heave. It presents methods for determining the factors that are required for the design of micropiles. Such factors include calculation of expected free-field heave, depth of soil wetting, and prediction of pier movement. A finite element program developed by the authors and others to determine pier heave and internal forces is presented. The input parameters that are required for pier analysis are discussed, and the nature of the output and the sensitivity of the results to the output are described. A case example illustrates the advantages of micropiles over other methods.

"Centre de Morphologie MathématiqueSpecial problems arise in the evaluation of lateritic-type orebodies (Ni-Co, bauxite) or, more generally, orebodies affected by surface weathering. In this type of orebody, the vertical grade distribution shows, from the hangingwall downwards, a systematic increase followed sometimes by a certain decrease, or vice-versa. These trends appear together with irregular variations from one drill bole to the other.The problem is to characterize a vertical structure that is representative not only of the drill hole but of an entire panel or zone of influence, in order to define mineable thicknesses for given cut-off grades. The vertical grade distribution observed on the drillhole is replaced by a new curve, called &apos;derive&apos; (drift), which is computed by &apos;universal kriging&apos;.Once the vertical study is completed, new &apos;service-variables&apos; are defined in the horizontal plane, such as mineable thickness and the corresponding average grade, economical functions (combination of the grades of several minerals). The local and global estimation of these variables can then be performed by a simple bi-dimensional kriging plan. The global estimation is summed up by several tonnage-cut-off grade curves.The practical valuation according to the above scheme of a New Caledonian lateritic nickel orebody is presented."
