In his report on the Coal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island, Mr. J. D. MacKenzie stated that: "For various reasons it has been imagined that the coal deposits of Vancouver Island are extremely large and readily available." "Unfortunately," he added, "neither of these assumptions is correct." The chief disability under which the Island mines now labor does not concern the extent of the deposits. There is ample coal for the present demand. It does, however, concern the availability of the coal. If it were readily available the fuel-oil competition would not be serious and there would be no competition with Alberta, American, Welsh, or Australian coal along the Pacific Coast, for Vancouver Island coal could be produced at a price that would cut out all competition. The outstanding operating difficulty common to all Island mines is the extreme irregularity of the coal seams. To most people a coal seam is synonymous with uniformity, and in most coal seams a condition found at one point will be repeated at other points in the same seam throughout the basin. The accompanying drawings show how very far this is from being true in the Cassidy mine, which, in many respects, is typical of Vancouver Island mines. Figure I is a plan covering about 160 acres of the Douglas seam, the only workable seam in this part of the district. The area shown represents what has been the best producing part of the mine and indicates the very large percentage of the seam where the coal is either entirely lacking or so small in amount that it cannot be profitably recovered.

The energy crisis and the general increase in fuel prices have changed the position of coal in the world. Countries need to review their policies on coal, depending on available reserves and their accessibility. On the demand side, a distinction should be made between the steel industry's specific demand for coking coal and the needs of power stations where coal is used in competition with other sources of energy. Coal consumption in these two sectors is expected to increase considerably over the foreseable future. Some countries have sufficient coal of their own to meet this increased demand but others will have to rely on imports. As a result, the tonnage of coal transported by sea may double by 1985. The coal industry lacks flexibility. The opening of new mines and the construction of a transport system to ship the coal takes time. This time-lag, coupled with the enormous expenditure involved, makes long-term contracts between producers and consumers essential.

The surface self-diffusion coefficient of copper (D,) has been measured between 847° and 1069 "C for six different orientations. These were the(111), (110, (100, and three higher index surfaces. The activation energy for Ds (designated Q s) was found to be about 49 kcal per mol for all six surfaces, and Do about 2 x 104 sq cm per sec. At any temperature Ds varied by no more than a factor of three over these orientations. It is shown that, if the free energy of a surface atom is uniquely determined by its number of nearest neighbors, it follows from the Principle of microscopic reversibility that Qs should have the same value for all surface orientations, and Ds should vary little with orientation. This model also suggests that for clean fee metals Qs ~ 2/3 AH, (heat of vaporization). This is true for copper. ALTHOUGH it has been appreciated for several decades that atoms can diffuse more rapidly on a surface than through the bulk of a crystal, it has only been in the last few years that reliable values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) have become available. Tracer studies of Ds had been attempted prior to this period, but when a tracer is placed on a surface, an ever increasing fraction of it is drained off into the lattice. The correction for this loss involves a very difficult, and as yet unperformed calculation. Those who have worked with tracers have not corrected for this loss.1, 2 Thus their results indicate that Ds is greater than the self-diffusion coefficient in the lattice (Dl), but it has not been established that they give quantitative data on Ds. A procedure which avoids the problem of tracer loss is to study the rate of mass-transfer under the effect of surface tension. If the surface asperity being studied is very small, the mass transfer occurs entirely by surface diffusion. The kinetics at which a grain boundary groove forms on an initially plane surface is a well-studied case of this type. The smoothing of a slight scratch in an otherwise flat surface is another procedure that has been studied. If these grooves are up to 20 to 30 µ in width, the dominant mechanism for mass transfer is surface diffusion (at least in the case of metals with low vapor pressures), and the widths can easily be measured with an interference microscope. Of these two, mass-transfer techniques only in the case of grain boundary grooving has a rigorous mathematical treatment been given. This was done by Mullins.3,4 His analysis predicted that in the case of copper in an atmosphere of an inert gas, surface diffusion should be the dominant transport mechanism. This analysis gave an equation for the groove profile and predicted that the width of the groove would increase as (time)1/4. Mullins and Shewmon showed that both of these predictions agreed with experiments.5 Thus the validity of the values of Ds given by this procedure seems to be well established. Gjostein has used copper bicrystals and the grain boundary grooving technique to determine Ds and the activation energy for surface selfdiffusion (9,) in the [001] direction on surfaces ranging between the (100) and (110) planes.= He reported that Qs = 41 kcal per mole and Do = 6.5 x 102 sq cm per sec for all orientations studied. Since the results did not change with the dew-point of the dry hydrogen atmosphere or the type of refractory tube used, he concluded that the surfaces were clean, or at least that the results were not influenced by any impurities chemisorbed from the atmosphere. The work reported here reproduces and extends Gjostein's study in that D s and Q s were determined for copper over a wider range of orientations. To study the effects of impurities, two purities of copper were used as well as cathodic etching to remove any possible electropolishing film. Gjostein postulated that the diffusing atoms on a surface near a low index plane are the few atoms which are adsorbed on the smooth region between ledges or steps in the surface. A more rigorous derivation of the equation relating Ds to the concentration and jump frequency of these adsorbed atoms is given here. Using this treatment, our empirical observation that Q s and D s are essentially the same for all surface orientations can be shown to follow from the assumption that the free energy of a surface atom is uniquely determined by its number of nearest neighbors. The studies of D s using the scratch technique have been carried out by Blakely and Mukura on nickel,' and by Geguzin and Oveharenko on copper. The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

Contribution by W.D. Ortlepp? The authors are to be commended for publishing their interesting view of an aspect of deep-level mining technology that is becoming increasingly topical and vitally important. This is the second paper in the journal within four months to deal with the crucial needs of highly stressed tunnel construction, the other being the paper on the design and testing of rockburst support in the February 1994 issue. Both papers re-examine important innovative ideas that are more than a quarter of a century old, but that have not yet been implemented by the industry. It is to be hoped that they will now, taken together, serve as a new starting point for a definitive examination of what constitutes proper tunnel-support design. There can be no question that the need to develop a design approach that will solve the problems of tunnelling at depths of 4000 m or more has now become crucial. Contribution by A.M.J. Vervoort* Although the overall paper is very interesting and the future research (comparison between numerical simulations and underground measurements) will be very challenging, I would like to make some remarks regarding the set-up of the numerical model and the interpretation of the elastic results.

This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical. As recently as ten years ago it was produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mtpy. Since then, both its production and use have declined; however, approximately half the production still comes from natural sources. [Fig. 1] illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Iran, Spain, and the Russian Republics. MINERALOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and Dewiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominantly sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominantly carbonate as alkali or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found in two principal minerals, mirabilite and thenardite. Mirabilite, the hydrous form, is commonly called Glauber's salt. It was discovered by the German chemist, J.R. Glauber (1603-1668), who derived its name from the Latin, sal mirabile, meaning wonderful salt. Thenardite, the anhydrous variety, was named for the French chemist, Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) of the University of Paris (Mitchell, 1979). The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. Sodium sulfate also is found in compounds, such as the minerals glauberite, the double salt of anhydrous sodium and calcium sulfate, bloedite, the hydrous double-salt of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, and burkeite, the anhydrous double-salt of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate. Over 40 minerals contain sodium sulfate in varying proportions; many are of special interest because of their frequent occurrence. Table 1 lists some sodium-sulfate bearing minerals. The reader is referred to other publications (Cole, 1926, Dana, 1932, Grabau, 1920, and Dietrich, 1969) for descriptions of these minerals. Only mirabilite and thenardite will be described herein. Mirabilite Na$04.10H20, contains 55.9% water of crystallization. It is noted for its efflorescence or spontaneous loss of water. On dehydration it changes to the anhydrous form, Na2S0,. Mirabilite is an opaque to colorless, water-soluble mineral that tastes first cool, then slightly bitter. It has a specific gravity of 1.48. It frequently forms as efflorescent, needlelike monoclinic crystals, but generally is found in the massive form. Thenardite, the anhydrous mineral, Na2S04, contains 43.68% Na20 and 56.32% SO3. It ranges from colorless to white and may be tinted shades of gray or brown. It is a water soluble mineral with a slightly salty taste. Its specific gravity (2.67) and hardness (2.5 to 3) exceed those of mirabilite. It commonly occurs in the massive form without visible crystals. Its crystals are frequently tabular pyramids of the orthorhombic system. Sodium sulfate also occurs as a heptahydrate, containing seven molecules of water, but this is unstable and has not been found in the natural environment. The solubility of sodium sulfate has an important effect on the crystallization of the salt in nature, as well as in its production. Its solubility in water generally increases as a nonlinear function of temperature. Below 1.2°C, ice and mirabilite form. As the temperature is increased above O°C, increasing amounts of sodium sulfate become soluble. At 32.4°C, a transition point on the solubility curve is reached, as the decahydrate melts in its own water of crystallization and the anhydrous form crystallizes. With in- creasing temperatures, solubility decreases somewhat. The presence of other dissolved salts changes the transition temperature and solubility characteristics of sodium sulfate.

Many aspects of water use in mining are driven by the technical requirements for water. There has been little consideration given to both the safety and the health requirements. Workers in the mining industry are exposed to water from a range of treated and untreated sources. The intended use of this water dictates the required quality of the water, sometimes with limited consideration for contact with miners. Particularly for underground workers, there is exposure while working in and walking through groundwater possibly contaminated by hazardous substances. Where controls are inadequate the outcomes of this exposure can result in disease, illness and injury û the costs of which can be significant. The situation could also arise where, due to the lack of human exposure, the controls are unwarranted and the financial cost unjustified from a health perspective but warranted from an equipment management standpoint. In addition to the health aspects, water can impact on a range of safety issues resulting from high pressure usage, dust suppression, fire fighting and other processes. The protocols and procedures in place need to consider the safety issues in addition to managing water usage. The current state of water management in mines from an occupational health and safety perspective has been ascertained from a survey targeting underground and surface coal and metalliferous mines. This survey considered the health and safety issues associated with water use, the types of surveillance, control protocols and the strategies that the mines have in place to manage the health and safety risks associated with water systems. The results assisted in the identification of potential occupational health and safety risks associated with water systems and the management processes that may be appropriate from a risk management perspective. Health and safety issues are often neglected but remain critical issues affecting the value of water to the mining industry.

Operating practices and resulting production from longwall faces are continually improving. Consequently, longwall operators are continually seeking to improve the dust control capabilities on longwalls. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting dust surveys at longwalls throughout the country in an effort to document the types of controls that are being used and to quantify the relative effectiveness of these controls. To date, surveys have been completed at longwalls in Alabama, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Utah, and West Virginia. In addition NIOSH has been reviewing longwall dust parameters provided by mine operators to MSHA to assess the status of dust control technology being used throughout the industry. Results from the underground dust surveys and information obtained from MSHA will be summarized in this paper to provide an update on longwall dust control technology and practices.

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. These may be characterized in general terms as follows:"

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

Lead-tin solders are commonly used in electronic packaging due to their unique combination of electrical, chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Since it is known that lead and lead containing alloys cause great environmental concern and health hazards it is necessary to replace lead in solder materials. Besides the environmental concerns new technologies in electronic packaging require new and improved solders. In most cases the new solders will consist of temary or quarternary alloy systems, the main component will be tin or indium and the second element could be bismuth. silver, copper and gold and to improve certain properties a third element will be added. For a third element zinc, nickel, antimony and aluminum can be considered. This report will concentrate on solders containing zinc as an environmental safe. element.

It has been recognized that froth flotation of mineral particles utilizing rising flow of micro size air bubbles, counter-current to quiescent falling flow of particles in a column type cell, provides a unique mechanical atmosphere conducive to extension of froth flotation process to much coarser and finer particles sizes than possible with mechanically agitated and aerated cells. 1,2,3,4. This paper describes metallurgical results obtained at several plant installations of large capacity commercial size Deister FLOTAIRE® Column Flotation Cells. These cells utilize air aspiration into surface tension lowered water to generate micro size bubbles. Operating costs, power, wear, and scaling characteristics of rougher, cleaner, and scavenger units are compared with mechanical units. Problems encountered and scale up criteria developed when increasing from 0.20m(8inch) diameter pilot cells to 2.42m(96inch) commercial cells are discussed.

The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue. (See WMATA System Map, Figure 1) The first three shafts were subcontracted from Morrison-Knudsen & Associates, Contract A9a, in July, 1975. "High temperature and humidity at the working negatively affect safety and health in deep and hot underground mines. It is necessary to predict during design the dynamic changes in temperature with heat and moisture emitted into the mine ventilation-thermal-humidity (VTH) system from various sources such as auto-compression, wall of strata, mining equipment and workers. Currently available mine ventilation and climate models are either furnished with a simplified, step-change-type (SCT) model for thermal solver (such as in Climsim, VnetPC, Minevent, MFire, etc), or with more advanced models to account for the “thermal history effect” (also known as thermal flywheel effect), such as in Ventsim and MULTIFLUX. The goal is to quantify the modelling error caused by the lack of variable thermal history component in the SCT model. Two models are compared: one with and one without the thermal history component in long, single airway examples with long-term climate simulations for 20 years assuming an input air temperature with daily variation. The examples illustrate the magnitude and the time-lag phase of the variation of the modelling errors with space, time and model conditions. Large errors are shown in the order of +14°C and –7°C errors, persistent for long time periods, up to 20 days in one example.INTRODUCTIONIt is important to predict the heat and humidity distributions during the design of hot and humid underground mines for the safety and health of the workers. The feasibility of extracting a rich deposit in great depth may depend on the extent of ventilation and mine climatization for maintaining an acceptable working environment. The cost of ventilation and cooling may be substantial, up to 40–50% of the total energy cost of mining (Clausen, 2017). The accuracy of model solution is important in view of the low profit margin in mine feasibility for deep and hot mines. Safety and health of the miners, the primary concerns, are therefore inherently connected to finding ever better solutions in simulation methods and ventilation control techniques."

A major problem in future discoveries of base metals is their "explorability". By this I mean an exploration program must be designed that assures accurate assessment of the potential for ore, but is within reasonable budgetary constraints. As we are compelled to depend more and more on non-outcropping prospects, "blind" deposits, and as drilling costs multiply, the costs of exploration increase significantly. Solutions to the problem of defining exploration targets are influenced by our conceptions of the origin and recognition o f conditions that localize ore. The maxim that "elephants should be sought in elephant country" presumes we can recognize elephant country. This paper presents a suggested origin for some mineral deposits, and their controls; particularly those termed ?Mississippi Valley type". Tennessee is used as an example of the ideas offered. Mining districts designated "Mississippi Valley type" are, and have long been, the principal sources of barite, fluorite, lead and zinc ores in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. A large volume of literature is available describing this class of ore deposits, explaining their habitat, and invoking genetic models for them. The quality of this literature is notably uneven, some of it demonstrably erroneous, and much of it is restricted to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to a single mine, or even a single stope. Modifications have been made to an earlier method developed by Popinet and Zaleski [12] to adapt the model for simulations of meniscus dynamics in the casting process.Initial casting simulations show that wetting conditions in the mould greatly influence the meniscus stability. Controlling the wetting conditions seems to be important for improving the cast ingot surface quality.IntroductionIn conventional direct chill (DC) hot top casting of aluminium extrusion ingot with gas-slip poor surface quality of the cast ingot can be a problem. In the worst cases pronounced surface wrinkling occurs coupled with periodic zones of reduced grain size, macrosegregation and exudation at the surface. The observed surface irregularities are believed to be linked to Periodic surface oscillations or folding of the meniscus resulting in varying solidification conditions.The focus of this work is to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the meniscus and the influence it has on the finished cast ingot surface through numerical simulations of meniscus movement during the casting process.A two phase marker chain front tracking technique[12] using cubic spline surface reconstruction is applied for modelling the meniscus movement. The advantage of this type of model is its accuracy in the calculation of surface tension forces. Also the wetting can be implemented directly as a boundary condition on the surface spline function. The method is applied in the FLUENT solver, which is based on a finite volume method using the SIMPLE algorithm."

Aluminum alloys are widely used in modern industry. Tubes and hollow shapes give great opportunities for structural purposes as well as fluid transport due to their stiffness and lightness, Extrusions on a mandrel or through a bridge die, that requires splitting of the billet with re-welding, produce hollow shapes with varied contours, fins and multiple cavities. Moving and stationary mandrels, mandrel lubrication, tooling for ribbed-tube heat exchangers, and for drilling pipes are considered. Bridge dies can be classified by the bridge position relative to the die face, by mandrel support structure, and by assembly type, The main parameters influencing the quality of the die-welded seams are considered, The difficulties of extruding various alloys through bridge dies are discussed in terms of metallurgical factors, Some approaches to the calculation of the stresses in a bridge are presented.
