THIS study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. [ ] The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metallographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. MATERIAL USED The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. The screen analysis of the powder was as follows: [ ] The minus 325-mesh analysis was made by using a Roller Air Analyzer.1,2 The apparent density is here defined as the weight per cubic centimeter of the [ ] loose, unpacked powder as measured with the Hall flowmeter. The value for the powder used was 2.57 grams per cubic centimeter.

Squirrel cage induction motors are the mostly used motors at present. Currently, the rotors of the squirrel cage induction motors are produced by aluminum die casting technique with the advantages of low cost of rotors. It is well known that the copper’s electrical conductivity is around 40% higher than that of aluminum. If copper is used to replace the current widely used aluminum in rotors, the total loss of motors will be reduced, hence increasing the overall motor efficiency. Copper rotors can be used to produce high efficiency and even super premium efficiency motors without enlarge the motor frame size. Considering the huge quantity of motors, the die casting process is the best solution to produce copper rotor with economic cost. Because of the characteristics of copper, it is difficult to produce copper rotors by casting similar to that done in aluminum rotors. In order to improve the die casting quality of copper rotor, a new tooling structure was developed and the casting process of copper rotor was simulated and analyzed by Any-casting software. The filling process, solidification process, inner gas distribution and residual melt modulus were analyzed. It was found that the design of symmetrical runner and inner runner on both sides was helpful to reduce the impact of molten copper to the cavity surface during the filling process. The use of Slag traps array can reduce die casting defects inside the end rings. That will be helpful to improve the rotor quality. INTRODUCTION Squirrel-cage AC induction motors are most widely used in the world. In 2017, the total installed capacity of AC motors in China has reached more than 1.2 billion kW, and the annual power consumption accounts for about 60% of the total national electricity consumption. To improve the efficiency of squirrel-cage motor will be helpful to energy conservation and environment protection. There are several ways to improve efficiency of induction motors, using copper rotor is one of the most effective solutions. It is well known that the copper’s electrical conductivity is around 40% higher than that of aluminum. If copper is used to replace the current widely used aluminum in rotors, the total loss of motors will be reduced, hence increasing the overall motor efficiency. The following is based on two examples of emission control with coal fired power stations as practised in Germany at Heilbronn Block 7 power station and the Rheinbraun coal combined power station with integrated high-temperature Winkler system (HTW). Heilbronn Block 7 demonstrates the successful emission control of sulphur and nitrogen oxides and the (HTW) system the reduction of the specific carbon dioxide emission. Both were sparked off by legislation which demanded certain emission control standards. Since the early eighties environment protection has been a matter of heated public debate in the European Community. A recent survey in Germany showed unemployment as being the only subject matter more frequently in the minds of people than environment protection. A new kind of forest devastation in areas away from industry has caused investigations by several government departments and private enterprise. Because of lack of conclusive evidence so far, the principle of PRECAUTION has replaced the CONCLUSIVE evidence as a base for new legislation concerning the environment. The new legislative standards for nitrogen oxide emissions in Germany for example have reduced NOx emissions of power stations from 1000 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in the beginning of 1983 to 200 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in April 1984. These new standards were enshrined in legislation when research provided some evidence linking nitrogen oxide emissions through photo-chemical reactions with forest devastation. Thirty European countries signed a treaty in 1983 expressing their concern about air pollution and their willingness to co-operate with each other in controlling large scale emissions.

Geological modelling provides a means of spatially representing the three dimensional distribution of geological information to downstream stakeholders. The geologist completing the modelling work intimately understands the varying degrees of confidence, assumptions and extrapolation required to honour the data. Geological models are often taken and used by stakeholders without fully understanding this modelling process. This can lead to confusion amongst stakeholders when the geological model shows variable reconciliation. A method for visually communicating the confidence of the spatial distribution of geological models has been created by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore structural geology group for use primarily in geotechnical engineering investigations. A numeric confidence rating is assigned to each geological data point used in the creation of a geological surface. This is based on data type, collection method and reliability to indicate potential error in distance from its modelled location. In regions of sparse data, confidence ratings are inserted based upon the geologistÆs experience and knowledge of the geology, whereas mapped geological contacts or drill hole intersections are assigned a higher confidence rating. A regular grid of points is registered to the geological surface and each of these grid points is assigned a confidence rating using an inverse distance weighting using a nearest neighbour approach. The resulting grid is colour coded according to the confidence rating to provide a visual representation of the variable confidence of the geological surface in three dimensions. Subjectivity and bias from the geologist is minimised by critically analysing the input geological data and then applying this methodology to represent the confidence in the spatial characteristics of geological models. Understanding of this confidence enables mining professionals to make informed decisions and identify areas that require further geological investigative work. This paper describes the results from computer runs simulating 24 different mine ventilation configurations with the main fan situated first at the top of the upcast shaft and then at the top of the downcast shaft. Real air was used, with evaporation, condensation and heat exchange. The results showed that power requirements for the forcing fan were up to 20% less than for the exhausting fan for equal mass flow rates.

The Rum Jungle mine was operated by Territory Enterprises Pty Ltd who mined uranium on behalf of the Australian Government with operations spanning the period from 1953 to the final closure of the mine in 1971. In addition to the extraction of uranium from the open cut pits, copper, manganese and lead were mined and processed at Rum Jungle. During the latter part of the operation, and after the closure of the mine, environmental studies were carried out which were aimed at determining the causes of the pollution at Rum Jungle and identifying a rehabilitation strategy for the mine site. These studies identified sources of heavy metal and acid pollution and proposed a rehabilitation strategy which consisted of 1. recontour, construct impervious covers and controlled surface drainage on, and revegetate three overburden heaps,

The year 1937 brought to south Arkansas increased drilling activity and production. Oil production amounted to 12,159,440 bbl., an increase of 1,504,500 bbl., or 14.1 per cent over 1936. This was the largest production since 1931, and the first annual increase since 1925, when the deeper sands at Smackover were developed. There were 177 wells completed during the year, with 103 oil wells, 6 gas wells, and 68 dry holes, an increase of more than 100 per cent over 1936. Of the 56 wildcat wells drilled, 52 were dry and 4 produced oil. Two new fields, one important extension and three minor extensions were discovered. The trend toward deeper drilling is shown by the fact that 97 wells were more than 5000 ft. deep, including 80 over 6000 ft. and 13 over 7000 ft., although the depth record of 7973 ft., made in 1935, was not exceeded. Geological Section Deeper and more extensive drilling during the past few years, not only in south Arkansas but also in adjacent parts of north Louisiana and east Texas, has furnished much important geological information and has brought out some very unexpected facts in regard to structural and depositional conditions in the series of formations laid down in the interval between the end of the Pennsylvanian and early Cretaceous time. It is now evident that an important basin of salt deposition existed in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas area, but it is still an open question whether this salt basin was contemporaneous and continuous with the even larger Gulf Coast salt basin extending from Mississippi to Mexico. The accompanying columnar section (Fig. 1) shows the producing zones and names that have been applied to the several subsurface formations, most of which have no outcrop equivalents. This is for the convenience of readers unfamiliar with recent developments, but the correlations and nomenclature cannot yet be considered final. These formations will be discussed in more detail in various papers to be published in the near future.

A red copper plate, discovered in the ruins of Dachengshan in Hebei province, was recognized as a forged one rather than a cast one, which means it was probably made from natural copper during the Longshan Culture period (2200~2208 BC) in the Chinese history. The copperware, found in the Niangniang Tai relics in Wuwei city, Gansu province, contains 99.6% copper and 0.4% Sn, Pb, Sb and Ni, which was guessed to be made during the Qijia Culture about 2000~ 1900 BC in the Chinese history in the late Neolithic before Shang dynasty. This shows that Chinese ancestors were able to distinguish, sort and use some native metals and minerals more than 4000 years ago.

Discussion of the paper of S. E. BRETHERTON, presented at. the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1595 to1599. ANTON EILERS, Brooklyn, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). While the advantages in the use of high-line siliceous slags in lead smelting which Mr. Bretherton discusses in this paper are obvious under certain economical conditions, he gives me credit for the introduction of such slags when it does not belong to me. It is true I did considerable experimental work, off and on, for the purpose of finding such slags, while at the Germania in 1877 and 1878, but I did not have occasion to introduce any such slags for regular work, because I had no ores which fitted the economical conditions for using high silica and high lime, except in isolated cases for very brief periods. On the contrary, the ores I had to treat were mostly very ferruginous and very low in silica, so that, economically, I was compelled to run nearly always on slags, which allowed me to use the abundant flux I had without cost. It was August Raht who first had occasion to establish and use for long periods a slag high in silica and line, and low in iron. This was when he was confronted with the task of smelting the. Horn-Silver ores at the smelting works at Franklin, Utah, with as little expenditure for fluxing material as possible. I was at that time in Leadville, Col., where, in the new works I had built, the Billings and Eilers smelters, I had occasion to use profitably many slags, but never anything as high in the earthy bases and in silica as Mr. Raht had to use.

Destress blasting techniques have been widely employed in underground mines for the purpose of preconditioning highly stressed rock mass. Appropriate applications of the technique successfully contribute to increasing mine safety (eg mitigating the risks for rock bursts). This paper presents a simulation technique to estimate the extent of damage zones induced by destress blasting. A 3D numerical model with a single blasthole is constructed with FLAC3D code, whereby static analysis is carried out in which horizontal and vertical stresses are applied to the model in order to simulate stress conditions in a deep underground mine. Afterwards, dynamic analysis is performed whilst applying time-varying blast pressure along the blasthole. The blast pressure profile takes into consideration an instantaneous increase and gradual decrease in blast pressure as well as the propagation of detonation along the blasthole. In this paper, constitutive models allowing for shear and tensile strengths of rock mass that are dependent upon strain rate are newly implemented into FLAC3D code with C++ programming language, whereby blast-induced damage is assessed by the extent of tensile and shear failure zones. The results obtained from the dynamic analysis show significant decrease in the extent of yielding zones induced by destress blasting with increasing the magnitude of in situ stress. They indicate that considering in situ stress state is indispensable in order to propose proper blast design for each level in underground mines. Based on these results, the relationship between the extent of the damage zone and depth at which destress blasting is performed is established. Furthermore, stress dissipation induced by destress blasting is examined with static analyses, in which the modulus of elasticity is decreased according to a rock fragmentation factor, a, only for the area where tensile and shear failures takes place during the dynamic analyses. A model parametrical study with respect to a is undertaken. The relationship between the rock fragmentation factor and the stress dissipation in the yielding zones is developed from the parametrical study. The detonation reactions occurring during rock blasting result in high pressure gas phase products from the condensed explosives typically used in mining applications. After detonation and the initial fracturing, the work done by the expansion of this gas contributes to burden movement and further rock fracturing. Before all of the energy in the reaction product can do useful work on the rock, some of this energy is lost to crushing and possibly to gas venting to the atmosphere. Borehole gas pressure decreases by three principle mechanisms: (i) expansion of the borehole cavity, (ii) flow into the fracture network, and (iii) flow through the stemming. To simplify the problem and to get a better understanding of the interaction of these mechanisms, a simple model for each of these mechanisms is developed. A comparison is made of the time-scales and the influence on burden movement for each. A comparison of gas flow behavior is made between typical ANFO and emulsion products.

The purpose of this research work is to predict the dust concentration distributions of different particle sizes on longwall faces. This Is necessary because the dust sources must be identified before dust control techniques can be recommended and applied correctly. The dust concentration data at longwall faces were determined by using Real-time aerosol monitors (RAM-1) and gravimetric monitors. However, these field data cannot explain the nature or the mechanisms of dust flow phenomenon on longwall face. Therefore, a mathematical model Is developed taking Into account the characteristics of airflow, the natures of dust generation and particles, the mechanisms of dust transport and deposition as well as the multiple dust sources on the longwall faces. In this paper, the identification of respirable dust sources on the longwall faces are determined. The dust particle size distributions In various longwall faces are analyzed and classified. The comparison analyses of field data and model predictions are presented. Specifically, the general trends of dust concentration on the longwall faces obtained at different positions and at various conditions are discussed.

The St. Peter Sandstone is typically a well-sorted, friable, ultra-pure, fine- to medium-grained, quartzose sandstone with silica content higher than 99 weight percent in places. The sand grains are well-rounded, highly spherical and characteristically frosted. Their size typically varies from 2 millimeters diameter (No. 10 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size) to less than 0.08 millimeters diameter (No. 200 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size). A freshly exposed surface of the formation is commonly white with shades of pink and green. Weathered surfaces are a dirty gray or brown and are case-hardened at many localities. Bedding is characteristically indistinct, and the formation usually appears massive throughout. The rock is cross-bedded and ripple-marked locally. The formation is generally porous, permeable and rarely fossiliferous in Missouri. The St. Peter is continuously present in the subsurface in the northern half of the state and along the southeastern edge of the state. The St. Peter crops out in a narrow band that starts in western Montgomery County and runs southeastward, along the Missouri River, to just west of St. Louis and continues south, just west of the Mississippi River, through Scott County. The outcrop belt varies from less than one mile wide to over ten miles wide, and it is over 150 miles in length. The formation dips into the subsurface radially away from the outcrop band. A notable isolated outcrop occurs in Lincoln County to the north of the main outcrop band. The St. Peter is discontinuously present in the subsurface along a band in the west-central portion of the state. It is not present at the surface or in subsurface in the remainder of the state. The formation averages 80?100 feet thick. There is an estimated 3.8 trillion short tons of St. Peter in Missouri. Sieve analyses on drill cuttings indicate three subsurface locations in northeastern Missouri where the St. Peter is greater than 10 percent by weight of sand falling in the 20?40 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size range. The St. Peter was first produced in Missouri in the 1870s for the manufacture of glass. Since that time it has been used as a paint additive, filler material, polishing compound, filtering media, and recently it is commonly used as a fracture proppant in oil and gas wells. The St. Peter is currently quarried and produced in Missouri from four sites located in St. Louis, Jefferson and Perry counties. In the same area there are at least nine abandoned historic mine sites.

Electrodeposited copper of the 1860s was of unprecedented purity, although the profound significance of this achievement was not fully realised until the dawn of the electrical age a decade or so later. By the 1870s there were three somewhat large (4 to 4.5 tonnes Cu/day) electrolytic copper refineries in Germany based on J. B. Elkington’s process, first patented in the United Kingdom in 1865. More such refineries were planned throughout Europe. At the same time, copper output in the U.S.A. was starting to expand and with the spread of European electrolytic copper refining technology across the Atlantic, the door opened to major increases in North American output. The technology was first taken up in 1879 by James Douglas at the Chemical Copper Company in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where he was Superintendent. Douglas was assisted in this pioneering work by Edward Weston. The copper refinery at the Chemical Copper Company was small, not unlike the first plants in Europe. The present authors contend that the electrolytic copper refinery at the Chemical Copper should be regarded as the first copper refinery in the United States. The Balbach Copper Refinery in New Jersey, which commenced operations in 1883 with an initial production of about 2 tonnes Cu/day, has been erroneously considered as the “first commercial refinery”; it rightly belongs in second place. The early developments at these plants are discussed in this paper. INTRODUCTION In the mid-1800s, the main uses for copper were as sheathing on the wooden sailing ships of the day to protect from marine growth, boiler components in locomotives and steam engines, along with some construction uses. Copper ores were generally smelted, and further fire-refined for market. The recovery of gold and silver, if present in payable amounts, was a slow and relatively expensive step. This situation regarding copper would change by the 1870s with advances in the generation and use of electricity. The introduction of the dynamo led to major developments in electrorefining. First demonstrated in principle by Faraday in 1831 (Faraday, 1832), the dynamo was subsequently adapted and further developed by J.S. Woolrich for electro-metallurgical applications in 1842 (Woolrich, 1842; Napier, 1845). It provided a new source of power with the unprecedented potential to significantly change the scale of metal production by electrometallurgy. Interestingly enough, copper would be needed for the electrical age just beginning. By 1869, advances in dynamo design offered relatively reliable large machines, which enabled J. B. Elkington in the United Kingdom to use the dynamo in the radically new Pembrey copper electrorefinery — the first copper electrorefinery in the world (Wraith, 2013). Initial production at Pembrey was small — in the range of 1 to 2 tonnes/day — while gold and silver were recovered more readily by the treatment of the slimes than with methods used hitherto.

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

Dr. Gardener, in Chapter 2, has presented a comprehensive state-of-the- art review of site investigations For tunneling. Nearly all of the techniques he discussed will also be required for future site investigations. Therefore, this chapter will be devoted to a few rather new exploration techniques plus ideas for improving some of the present-day methods. In March 1962, the first symposium on "Remote Sensing of Environment" was held at the University of Michigan.l Since that time, four additional symposiums have been held at the same University. Also, the technical Literature has recently included a number of articles on remote sensing techniques. A recent one appeared in the February 1968 issue of Materials Research and Standards.Vt was entitled "Developments in Remote Sensing Applicable to Airborne Engineering Surveys of Soils and Rocks," and was written by Dana C. Parker. Mr. Parker predicts that aerial reconnaissance will someday supplant soil augers, rock drills, surface reconnaissance, and geophysical surveys as the engineer's primary means of obtaining information about soils and rocks. He states, "The engineer wishing to survey a route or a site or to locate rock and soils suitable for construction projects will be able to push some buttons in an airplane and record all the data required for determining the relevant conditions. In a short time after he returns to earth with his rolls of film and charts, he will be able to reduce and analyze the data by partially computerized techniques and to compile a concise and comprehensive engineering report that gives all the relevant information about rocks, soil, water, and vegetation in the area he surveyed. Most important he will feel as confident with his recommendations, derived primarily from image characteristics and spectral power distributions, as his predecessors did with recommendations based on more tangible evidence obtained from drill cores and surface reconnaissance." The subject chosen for this paper is not a new one, but the subject matter is so extensive that something new can always be said .about it. We are just beginning to realize how little is actually known about the character of Alberta coal, except for a few general facts. The object of this paper is not to explain that our previous information, in whole or in part, on the coal resources of Alberta, has been incorrect, but rather to present some new facts obtained as a result of recent study in the field and in the laboratory. As field investigation continues the problem of determining the character of a coal seam for any great distance laterally becomes more and more complex. Our present knowledge of Alberta coal deposits should not be discussed before due reference is made to those great pioneers who blazed the trails for later geologists, by recording their observations on the general geology of Alberta. Geologists, to-day, particularly those of us who are striving, year after year, to unravel the mysteries of stratigraphy, palaeontology, and structure, in so far as these are related to the coal resources of Alberta, fully realize our indebtedness to those three trail-makers, Dawson, McConnell, and Tyrrell. Had these geologists not recorded their observations correctly, nor interpreted the broad geological facts contained in Nature's book, with still uncut pages, how much slower would have been the progress of our coal knowledge in the succeeding years. It is true that many of the interpretations given to observations by these pioneers have had to be changed as a result of closer studies, but we must also expect that the geological interpretation from present day observations will be changed by future workers, as Nature's book is read and re-read.

The economics of microbial coal desulfurization are affected significantly by the proper selection of the plant site and by maintenance of variables at suitable levels. High sulfur coal particles below 200 mesh show sulfate production rates triple those with 150 mesh coal but grinding costs are greater. Slurry solids density increases from 5% to 20% reduced the rate constant by a factor of 10. Coal added to a batch reactor in the stationary phase resulted in a sudden second exponential sulfate production phase indicating feasibility of lower cost continuous operation. Successful operation in the absence of beef broth, yeast or added nutrients at non-sterile conditions enhanced projected economics. Finally, the need for adequate agitation and aeration was well established.
