THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 1400°F. (760°C.), the metal becomes non-magnetic, and at the "As point," 1670°F. (910°C.), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 1400 to 1670°F., it is sometimes called beta (0) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 2550°F. (1400°C.), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non-magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in a hydrogen atmosphere) at 2795°F. (1535°C.); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures. (1) For example, in heating through the As point a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 27 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always the case. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no transformation occurs. Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. Of the metals which are liquid at the melting point of iron only lead, silver, and bismuth refuse to dissolve to an appreciable extent. The non-metals presumably dissolve by virtue of the formation of an iron compound; for example, sulphur is thought to dissolve as the compound FeS. Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.

"This paper concentrates on the four recent plant trials/ applications of froth washing. Results showed that improved metallurgical performance can be achieved with wash water. Increased froth cleaning yielded better upgrading, and some cases slightly improved recovery. Froth sampling and salt tracer tests supported the findings of froth washing tests.At Falconbridge, Ni grade increased from l.47% to 2.15% and recovery from 85% to 87%. At Eastmaque, final Au grade increased from 2.3 to 2.7 oz/st at a slightly higher recovery. At Les Mines Selbaie, Cu grade increased from 24.5% to 25.S% and Zn grade from 54.5% to 56.l%. At Zinc Corp. of America, average Zn grade increased from 55% to 56. 8% at the same recovery for a 45-day period. A number of plants in Canada and the United States have evaluated and/or now practicing froth washing. Wash water has now proved itself in some plants over several months of operation.INTRODUCTIONFroth washing in mechanical flotation cells offers a number of metallurgical (i. e. increased grades and/or recoveries) and economical (i.e. decreased transportation and smelting & refining costs) benefits. Fundamental development work in laboratory and pilot scales performed at McGill yielded encouraging results. (Kaya and Laplante, 1988a and 1989a). Since laboratory and pilot flotation performance can differ from full-scale due to differences in hydrodynamics, kinetics, and froth characteristics (e.g. stability, loading etc.), plant trials were essential to prove the viability of this technology."

The 65th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at the Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The first session was called to order by Past President Joe T. Taylor, Kaiser Steel Corporation, Palo Alto, California. Manager of the Stanley Hotel, who welcomed the guests to the Stanley. After a few remarks, he introduced Bob Dean, for- mer Manager of the Stanley Hotel and again associated with the Stanley, who also made a welcoming talk as Mr. Dean has hosted the Institute at the Colorado Hotel in Glenwood Springs and in Estes Park. Mr. Taylor introduced President Stanley C. Shubart, Secretary-Treasurer, Schloss & Shubart, Inc., Denver, Colorado. Stan was raised in the machinery end of the coal industry following the footsteps of his Dad who was one of the founders of the RMCMI in 1912. And following his Dad's years of service to the Institute, 12 of them as Secretary, Stan has been active as Chairman of the Hotel & Registration Committee for 16 years, and, prior to his election as President, was General Chair- man for two years He is a graduate of the University of Colorado with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served our country in World War II and retired as a Colonel, Army Ordnance, after 43 years in the Reserve. He is a Trustee of National Jewish Hospital and was their President for 3 years. He has been active in many Military and professional societies, and in civic projects. I give you our President, Stan Shubart, for his remarks.

NIOSH recommends that exposures to respirable coal mine dust be limited to 1 mg/m3 as a TWA concentration for up to 10 hr/day during a 40-hr workweek, measured according to current MSHA methods (see Section 5.1 and Appendix J). NIOSH recommends that sampling be conducted with a device that operates in accordance with the NIOSH accuracy criteria [Busch 1977; Busch and Taylor 198 11 and the international definition of respirable dust [ACGIH 1994; CEN 1993; IS01993; Soderholm 1991a,b; 1989].* The REL represents the upper limit of exposure for each worker during each work shift. For single, full-shift samples used to determine noncompliance, NIOSH recommends that MSHA make no upward adjustment of the REL to account for measurement uncertainties [NIOSH 1994c] (see also Section 5.6.2). NIOSH further recommends that all reasonable efforts be made to reduce exposures to respirable coal mine dust below the REL through the use of engineering controls and work practices.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

Empirical models are now used for predicting the performance of hydrocyclones in terms of capacity. cut size (d50.c), water split and partition curve. These models (such as the model by Lynch and Rao and the model he Plitt) were developed and checked for hydrocylones with diameters larger than 4 in. However, for smaller-diameter hydrocyclones, little empirical modeling has been done. This paper reports on an extended experimental research program on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models was investigated and their accuracy was compared. To improve the predictive capability of these models to small cyclones modifications to the equations are proposed.

Introduction In preparing this paper on Recent Developments in Gold Milling Practice, the idea occurred to me that possibly the best way to deal with the subject would be to take you in thought on a visit to the principal gold mining camps of the Dominion, starting at the east and finishing up in the west, and noting, as we go, the outstanding improvements that have been made in the last few years in the practice of gold milling. Before beginning this tour, I desire to emphasize the debt this country, and particularly our mining industry, owes to that body of trained and experienced men, little heard of, but who, working quietly on their problems, are responsible for these improvements. The metallurgists, to whom I refer, have solved many difficult problems for the mining industry, in connection with the treatment of our complex ores; for instance, the silver-cobalt ores of the Cobalt district, the gold ores of the Porcupine district, the gold-telluride ores of the Kirkland Lake? district, the copper-gold ores of Noranda, the arsenical-gold ores of the Beattie mine, the copper-zinc ores of Flin Flon, and the lead-zinc ores of Kimberley. In doing so, they have maintained the high technical standards of the profession, and the practices thus evolved are noteworthy for their high degree of efficiency. When the price of gold increased from $20.67 to $35.00 an ounce, what had formerly been thought to be a low tailing became almost an ore, so that the metallurgists are now busily engaged upon the problem of putting this railing back in its proper place of being a tailing once more, or from its value, at the present price, of anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar or so per ton, to a few cents per ton. Owing to the changing prices of the metals in the world's markets, still greater improvements in metallurgical practices are imperative. An important contributory factor towards improvement in ore dressing is the aid furnished by the microscope in the examination of ores and mill products. By making possible the determination of the mineral constituents of the ore, their association, and grain size, it gives the investigator a knowledge of his problem, before he does any actual test work. In the Mines Branch laboratories at Ottawa, its use has enabled us to predict how an ore should respond to various methods of treatment.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

Disastrous earthquakes are a reality on the Australiancontinent. Unfortunately it has taken the fatal 1989 New-castle earthquake to demonstrate to all Australians that we do not reside on a "stable continent". While the world accepts the potential of plate tectonics and its associated plate margin earthquakes, particularly around the active Pacific Rim, the realisation of devastating intra-plate, or continental, earthquakes is only now beginning to take effect. The 1989 Newcastle earthquake provides many lessons on which to further fundamental earthquake research and the applications to the future welfare of human civilisation. To mitigate the earthquake hazard in relation to the devastation to life, property and industry, research must be undertaken with the resulting informa-tion to be included in the nation's disaster management programs. The earthquake hazard is everpresent in east-ern Australia and the major step in its quantification is a more realistic determination of earthquake risk estimates through an integrated study of seismology, engineering, insurance and sociology.

Discussion of the paper of ROSWELL H. JOHNSON, presented it the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, And printed in Bulletin No. 102, June, 1915, pp. 1291 to 1294. WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, San. Francisco, CaI.-A sliding. scale of royalties was proposed to the Department of the Interior in connection with the fixing of royalties to be charged upon oil leases made on the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma. The possibility of evasion and difficulty of enforcement required close inspection to satisfy all interests, particularly in connection with the exemption from royalty on oil to equal maintenance and interest on the junk. Mr. Johnson discusses the block method, the period method, and the cumulative method, and favors the adoption of the cumulative method with a proviso that the wells should be permitted to be pumped until the gross income is as low as the maintenance cost, which would mean exemption from royalty on the smallest wells. He recommends that depth be the variable factor upon which the sliding royalty is based and suggests that on partially developed territory in the Osage, the royalty be one-sixth for oil wells averaging less than 2,000 ft. in depth, one-eighth for wells from 2,000 to 3,000 ft., and one-twelfth above 3,000 ft.; for the rest of the Osage he suggests one-eighth above 2,800 ft. and one-twelfth below that depth. The net result, if Mr. Johnson's suggestions had been accepted in the Osage, would have been to reduce the then existing rate of royalty and considerably increase the cost of administration. The difficulties in determining the size of wells to be exempt and the possibility of obtaining oil at different depths in the same well might lead to complications which are avoided by charging a flat royalty as now universally charged throughout the United States. It is not uncommon to reduce the royalty when the production of the wells becomes unprofitable at an existing rate of royalty, accomplishing very much the same results as Mr. Johnson has attempted to accomplish by the cumulative royalties, and probably in a manner far more satisfactory to the operator and the lessor. A. C. MCLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-The net revenue of the well depends, first, on the cost of production; second, on the amount of oil produced; therefore it would be impossible under Mr. Johnson's system to set a royalty which would be fair to all concerned. If it is impossible to set it at the beginning, it is certainly further impossible to do it from day to clay. I think it is entirely impracticable of application.

The Bureau of Mines combined preconcentrating techniques and mass spectrometry to develop a parts-per-billion general analysis of impurities in helium. The impurities are preconcentrated using a Bureau trace-impurity analyzer; 35-mm Hg pressure of helium is left in the concentration trap to sweep the impurities into the mass spectrometry and provide a 10-mm Hg sample pressure.

Fe-V alloys with small percentages of vanadium show no deviations from Sieverts' Law up to P~, = 1 atm in the 1600º to 1750ºC region. At somewhat under 8 pct V and up to at least 20pct V, at 1604" and 1661 °C, nitrogen absorption follows Sieverts' Law at low Pn2 values, but deviates from this law beyond critical values of pn2, due to formation of a nitrzde phase of approximately VN composition. The behavior below these solubility limits can be described at all temperatures by the equations: RAO and parlee1 suggested that the nitrogen absorption curve for liquid iron alloys takes the general form shown in Fig. 1 when an alloy nitride precipitate is formed. They showed that the precipitation of 6 titanium nitride from liquid Fe-Ti alloys follows this general scheme and dealt with the general theory involved. Recently, Evans and Pehlke2 reported their research on the precipitation of aluminum nitride from liquid Fe-A1 alloys. Fountain and Chipman's recent paper3 on the precipitation of boron nitride from solid solution contains a fine example of the analogous behavior which they have been studying in the solid state. Researches on the absorption of nitrogen by liquid Fe-V alloys have been described by various authors.1,4-7 Most of this work has been confined to fairly low vanadium concentrations and rather high temperatures because of difficulties variously described as, formation of surface scums, bridging, and so forth. This behavior and the rough thermo- dynamic calculations made by chipman,8 over eleven years ago, indicated that excessively high vanadium concentrations should not be required for vanadium nitride precipitation. It seemed desirable to look for and study this precipitation in order to fill out the thermodynamically interesting nitrogen absorption data on these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The general method used was essentially the same as employed by Rao and parlee,1 in which a Sieverts type of apparatus was used and the precipitation of the nitride detected by the "break-point" in the Sieverts' Law line, and by the visual observation of the formation of the new phase on the surface of the melt. There were, however, a few differences in apparatus and technique as described below. The oil manometer used by Rao and parlee' to measure low partial pressures of nitrogen was not employed. The present authors sought to avoid as much as possible the exposure of the liquid alloy to low total pressures of gas during the 6 to 10 hr long runs because of the heavy iron evaporation-loss errors involved. This was achieved, partly by keeping evacuation times to a minimum with fast pumping but largely by the use of two burettes, one for argon and one for nitrogen, and using them to equilibrate the alloy with mixtures of argon and nitrogen rather than nitrogen alone. The Conference was followed by a series of one day visits and an extended technical tour. The Conference was organized jointly by the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, the School of Business Leadership of the University of South Africa, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

(communication to the Secretary.*) — Mr. Caldecott says on p. 67: "The Dorr thickener shown, while a useful device when crushing with cyanide solution for removing surplus solution from slime pulp prior to air-lift agitation or vacuum filtration, is not adapted to effect as complete a separation of water from settled slime as the ordinary intermittent settlement and decantation." This statement might have passed muster in this country several years ago when. the Dorr thickener was a new device, but its use in hundreds of mills in the United States has demonstrated that as thick a product is being discharged from it as was obtained from the intermittent settling which it has supplanted. • It is interesting to note that recent investigation, especially the work of 11. 6. Coe and G. H. Cleveilger,' in the March Bulletin of the Institute, under the title: Laboratory Method for Determining the Capacities of Slime Settling Tanks, has developed the general theory of settlement and explains the results obtained in practice. Just as free settlement is a function of surface area, so thickening after the zone of free settlement is passed is a function of time. The time required is obtained by the capacity or volume provided in the settler for this thickening zone. Each pulp is a problem in itself, both in regard to free settlement and to time required to reach a commercially finished thickness. Some pulps require 48 hr. and more to reach a density of 40 per cent. solids; others no coarser to the screen test reach a density of 65 per cent.' solids in a fraction of that time. In thickening any pulp a point is reached where the increase in density is so slow as to be commercially unprofitable. When any part of the pulp has reached this point it should pass on for treatment—its place in the thickener should be occupied by pulp which has not yet reached the commercial limit. By doing this the whole volume of the settling tank is kept in active use. Thus the continuous thickener keeps the whole tank at work to its commercial limit, while the intermittent settler has much of its volume occupied at times by pulp which is either quite finished thickening or at least thickened past the commercial point. The mechanical efficiency of the continuous thickener can be the only argument for limiting this statement. In my own experience I have never

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. "Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."
