Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and personnel from Coeur Silver Valley, Wallace, ID, conducted tests using rock strain strips and Split-Set rock bolts instrumented with strain gauges to monitor wall rock strain at the Galena Mine, Osburn, ID. The objective of the test was to identify whether strain on the rock bolts increased prior to a rock burst. Although results were inconclusive, researchers learned that the Split-Set rock bolts yielded in stick-slip fashion in the highly jointed walls of the stope. The bolts were also bent as stress was redistributed following blasting and subsequent movement along joints in the wall rocks.

Analysis of deep foundations in terms of axial capacity has been a topic of great interest in the soil-structure interaction problems. Soil behavior is governed by a series of complex stress-strain changes that occur during pile installation and subsequent loading. Owing to the difficulties and uncertainties on the basis of the soil strength-deformation characteristics, one of the most frequently followed design practice is to refer to the formulae correlating directly the pile axial capacity components of unit base resistance (qb) and unit shaft resistance (fp) to the data collected from cone penetration test (CPT), i.e. to the tip stress (qc or more proper qt), sleeve friction (fs), and shoulder pore water pressure (u2). The elementary basis for such formulations has been the idea of considering cone penetrometer as a mini-pile foundation. This has resulted in plethora of correlative relationships in the past over 60 years. Such correlations, although empirical, have been worked out on the basis of load test results from both instrumented and un-instrumented full scale piles and are able to accommodate many important variables. A quick review of the evolution process and development of such design formulations is presented with a view to propose recommendations for future research directions, where the latest version of CPT i.e. seismic piezocone test (SCPTu) can be used to advance from capacitysingularity to the complete axial pile load–displacement (Q–w) response.

"Al–Si–Cu–Mg die casting alloys are widely used in the automotive industry, and recent advancements in high pressure die casting technology enable heat treating products to achieve desirable properties. However, CO2emissions associated with die-casting production lines should be reduced to address the global warming issue. In this study, the relation between the microstructures and thermal stability of precipitates formed during isothermal aging at 423, 485, and 558 K of Al-11.0 mass%Si-1.8 mass%Cu-0.2 mass% Mg (JIS ADC12) was investigated using Vickers hardness tests and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hardness tests and TEM results showed that Si compounds and Al–Cu compounds enhanced the mechanical properties of the alloy and that the predominant compound affecting the mechanical properties differed between specimens treated at 423 K and those treated at 558 K. Moreover, additional aging at 423–458 K resulted in a material with a Vickers hardness higher than that of the isothermally single-aged material. Differential scanning calorimetry, differential elemental analysis, and selected-area diffraction analysis using TEM suggested that the combination of Al–Cu compounds precipitated at low aging temperatures and Si compounds precipitated during preliminary aging increased the mechanical strength, resulting in a maximum hardness of 130 HV.INTRODUCTIONAl–Si–Cu–Mg die casting alloys have well-balanced mechanical properties, machinability, and cast ability. These alloys are therefore widely used in the automotive industry because of their superior characteristics, accounting for>90% of the aluminum used in die casting production. As a substitute for iron-based materials, these alloys have contributed to the development of lightweight vehicles.Dong et al. (2014) reported that the heat treatment of die casting materials is effective for changing their dimensions under high temperatures as a result of the precipitation of solid-solution elements. Recent advancements in high pressure die casting technology have led to the application of heat treatments of Al–Si–Cu–Mg alloy products to reduce fuel consumption and satisfy customer needs. Although attempts to reduce CO2emissions have focused on fuel consumption in cars and fuel efficiency regulations have become increasingly strict in recent years, CO2discharged from production lines should also be reduced without adversely affecting the properties of the product. Heat treatments for artificial aging after solution treatment (T6 treatment) and after casting (T5 treatment) are CO2discharge sources, which together with a holding furnace account for >80 % of the CO2discharged during the casting process."

Magnetite pellets were reduced in flowing hydrogen at pressures up to 40 atm over a temperature range of 350° to 500°C. The rate of weight loss of oxygen per unit area of the reaction surface was found to be constant with time at each temperature and pressure. The reaction rate was found to be directly proportional to hydrogen pressure up to 1 atm and to approach a maximum rate at high pressures. The results can be explained by considering the reaction surface to be sparsely occupied by adsorbed hydrogen at low pressures and saturated at high pressures. PREVIOUS investigation1,2 have shown that the reduction of iron oxides in hydrogen is controlled at the reaction interface. Under fixed conditions of temperature, hydrogen pressure, and gas composition, the reduction rate is constant with time, per unit surface area of residual oxide, and is directly proportional to the hydrogen pressure up to one atmosphere. The reduction rate of a sphere of iron oxide can be described3 by the following equation which takes into account the changing reaction surface area: where ro and do are the initial radius and density of the sphere; t is time; R is the fractional reduction; and R, is the reduction rate constant with units mass per area per time. The quantityis actually the fractional thickness of the reduced layer in terms of fractional reduction R. It was found in a previous investigation2 of the reduction of magnetite pellets in H2-H,O-N, mixtures, that the reaction rate was directly proportional to the hydrogen partial pressure up to 1 atm at a constant ratio of water vapor to hydrogen. Water vapor poisoned the oxide surface by an oxidizing reaction and markedly slowed the reduction. The enthalpy of activation was found to be + 13,600 cal per mole. It was also found that the magnetite reduced to meta-stable wüstite before proceeding to iron metal. The following equation was derived from absolute reaction-rate theory4,8 to expfain the experimental data: where Ro is the reduction rate in mg cm-2 min-'; KO contains the conversion units; Ph2 and PH2O are the hydrogen and water vapor partial pressures in atmospheres; Ke is the equilibrium constant for the Fe,O,/FeO equilibrium; Kp is the equilibrium constant for the poisoning reaction of water vapor; L is the total number of active sites; k and h are Boltzmann's and Planck's constants; and AF is the free energy of activation. Tenenbaum zind Joseph5 studied the reduction of iron ore by hydrogen at pressures over 1 atm. They showed that increasing the hydrogen pressure materially increased the rate of reduction. This is in accordance with the work of Diepschlag,6 who found that the rate of reduction of iron ores by either carbon monoxide or hydrogen was much greater at higher pressures. He used pressures as high as 7 atm. In order to further understand the mechanism of the reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen it was decided to study the effect of increasing the hydrogen pressure on rebduction rates of magnetite pellets. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The dense magnetite pellets used in these experiments were made in the following manner. Reagent-grade ferric oxide was moistened with water and hand-rolled into spherical pellets. The pellets were heated slowly to 550°C in an atmosphere of 10 pct H2-90 pct CO, and held for 1 hr. They were then heated slowly to 1370°C in an atmosphere of 2 pct H2-98 pct CO, then cooled slowly in the same atmosphere. The sintered pellets were crystalline magnetite with an apparent density of about 4.9 gm per cm3. They were about 0.9 cm in diam. The porosity of the pellets, which was discontinuous in nature, was akrout 6 pct. The pellets were suspended from a quartz spring balance in a vertical tube furnace. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially the furnace consists of a 12-in. OD stainless steel outer shell and a 3-in. ID inconel inner shell. The kanthal wound 22 in. long, 1 1/2, in. ID alumina reaction tube is inside the inconel inner shell. Prepurified hydrogen sweeps the reaction tube to remove the water vapor formed during the reaction. The hydrogen is static in the rest of the furnace. The sample is placed at the bottom of the furnace in a nickel wire mesh basket suspended by nickel wire from the quartz spring. "A computational model of rock blasting is being developed to examine the blasting problems associated with in situ oil shale processing. This model, however, will also be useful as a design tool for the traditional problems in rock blasting. The model includes fundamental treatment of both shock-wave propagation and the accumulation of brittle fracture in the rock. As a result, the model accurately predicts the degree and extent of fracturing as functions of design parameters. The model has proven useful for making parametric studies and for evaluation of alternate blast designs. This paper demonstrates the use of the numerical model to simulate the fracturing induced by the detonation of a vertical explosive column near a bench. The fracturing induced by three differentexplosives indicate that (in the chosen geometry) the most efficient breakage is done by a column of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture (ANFO) used with a toe charge of aluminized ANFO. There was too much unfractured rock left when ANFO was used alone; aluminized ANFO used for the entire explosive column caused excessive fracturing. A final case involves ANFO used alone to fracture a different rock type. This case points out that in a different rock type, the ANFO will not leave excessive unfractured rock."

Electrical resistivity as a function of temperature was investigated in undercooled gallium and under-cooled Ga-In alloy of eutectic compositian to examine structural changes in undercooled melts. A continuous linear extension of the resistivity was determined for 99.999 pct pure gallium when undercooled below the stable Ga(l)-liquid, and the metastable Gafl)-liquid equilibria. In icndercooled Ga-In, a significant continuous negative departure from linear resistivity behavior was observed below the eutectic temperature. All resistivity measurements were made by the four-point probe technique. ThE temperature range for investigations into the physical properties of liquids before freezing has been greatly extended with the undercooling of massive melts of pure metals and alloys. Experimental determinations of thermal and transport properties and diffraction patterns in undercooled systems should throw further light on the structural behavior of liquids. Many measurements showing prefreezing anomalies in viscosity1'5 have been regarded677 as evidence for structural groupings in the liquid state. However, the majority of viscosity results,~)~-~~ conforming to the law 17 =A exp(~/RT), do not support theories of atomic aggregation. For the system Cd-Sb, which exhibits a metastable solid phase, Fisher and Phillipsg reported that, in undercooled alloys, the activation energies for viscous flow below the stable liquidus are much higher than those above it. Similarly, Miller et a1." observed a doubling of the activation energies for electrical conductivity in undercooled Cd-ib alloys. These effects were suggested as indicative of atomic association and clustering in the liquids at lower temperatures. With the recent establishment of metastable phases in pure gallium22 and its alloys,23 attempts were made during this investigation to undercool bulk samples and to determine the temperature dependence of electrical resistivitv. The object of this paper is to describe, as concisely as possible, the methods of sampling and ore estimating used at the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corpn., as applied to the Copper Queen mines at Bisbee, Ariz. Because of the difference in occurrence, manner of prospecting, and methods of mining, the sampling and estimating practice falls into two divisions: That for the underground operations, and that for the Sacramento Hill steam-shovel operations. The orebodies of the Warren district may be divided into three main classes: Replacements of limestone, replacements of porphyry, and replacements of contact breccia. The first class is more or less intimately related to porphyry intrusions, although in badly fractured country this relationship may not be well shown. These orebodies are mainly oxide and carbonate ore and very irregular, both in size and outline, although usually roughly lenticular and following the bedding of the limestones. There is usually quite a sharp boundary between the ore and waste in the carbonate and oxide orebodies and sampling is not necessary to determine the limits of commercial ore. In the sulfide orebodies, it is exceedingly difficult, without sampling, to determine the boundary between commercial ore and the surrounding low-grade or barren pyrite. Calculations made a few years ago showed that these orebodies had an average thickness of 35 ft, As some of the orebodies are from 100 to 300 ft. thick, it can be seen that the smaller ones form a difficult prospecting and estimating problem. In the replacements in porphyry, both underground and in Sacramento Hill, the boundary usually cannot be determined without sampling. There is a gradual decrease in value until barren material is reached; this gradation may occur within a short distance or it may extend for several yards.

THE term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater mecha-nization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar model built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimensions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein.

A switch to refractory-type slurry pump linings has significantly reduced maintenance costs arising from liner failure at a Missouri lead mill. The pumps routinely handle a slurry consisting of 79 to 81% solids with occasional tramp iron, and are subjected to intense abrasion which previously wore out rubber liners in anywhere from three days to two months. Average liner life at the 1.5-million-t/y (1.6-million-stpy) operation was 30 days. Experimentation with mild steel liners and even manganese steel liners failed to extend liner life beyond two months.

Pyrite samples from twenty-one locations in the North Carolina Slate Belt were analyzed for cobalt, gold, mercury, and nickel by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The geographic distribution of relatively high values of certain trace elements in pyrite suggests that, in addition to gold, cobalt and nickel metallogenetic provinces are possible in the slate belt. Northwest trends of province boundaries may be genetically related to subsurface features rather than to surface geology. Within province boundaries gold and nickel exploration programs should be concentrated in areas containing intermediate to mafic tuffs, while cobalt may be more concentrated in argillites and phyllites.

Dynamic load testing is employed with ever increasing frequency to estimate the strength and elastic settlement behavior of piles of all types. For dynamic loading ram masses up to 20 Mg have been used and pile resistance forces up to 30 MN have been activated. Strains and accelerations induced by the impact are measured near the pile top and a load-set curve is computed by the so-called CAPWAP method. This paper briefly describes both the necessary equipment and other details of the dynamic tests and the available analytical tools for data interpretation. Furthermore the need for further research and the current status of standardization will be discussed. This paper also presents the results from several static and dynamic correlation tests on cast-in-situ piles of up to 2 m diameter and 64 m length. The results demonstrate the economical and technical feasibility of this test method.

Three principal activities are involved in planning and developing a surface mine. These are 1) definition of economic and technical feasibility, 2) design, procurement and construction, and 3) mining and reclamation. The last is the only activity which begins in the feasibility study and continues throughout the life of a mine. It is also the activity which depends heavily on use of computers. This paper deals with a method of selecting mining software and dwells on the recent progress, made in this area. Discussed also is the status of computerized equipment management and information systems: a microprocessor based technology applied to dispatch systems, monitoring of equipment health and performance, wireless data transmission to a centralized data processing unit, and mine- wide information and reporting system. Reference has been made to upcoming developments which offer the potential- of transforming the surface mine of the year 2000 into a "manless pit". Canadian achievements in all of these areas have been highlighted at appropriate places in the text.

The mining industry, in particular the coal industry, has experienced the implementation of some major environmental regulatory programs during the past two decades. Over the coming decade the coal industry will probably experience only "fine tuning" of the regulatory programs they now operate under. The rest of the indus- try, however, appears to be on the verge of coming under a major new regulatory effort by the Environmental Protection Agency. Litigation and resulting court decisions will be the main force driving further changes in the SHCRA (Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act) regulatory program. These changes are anticipated to be minor in compar- ison to earlier changes. EPA, however, is preparing a regulatory program which may carry as much impact to the rest of the mining industry as SNRA was to coal. Details of this program have yet to be worked out. Changes in the way EPAts Clean Air Program is applied to mining could also significantly impact the mining industry.

The ever growing interest to the complex iron ores may be attributed to possible production of the naturally alloyed metals and the efficient recovery of the associated elements. However, the conventional technique for complex ore processing is complicated and in some cases even impossible. A pyrometallurgical benefiation of such ores without melted slag formation has been advanced. A version of the technique assumes pellet production with metal coagulated within a slag shell on grinding the pellets, the metal phase is mechanically separated from the slag shell. The technique has been run up with ferro chromo nickel, high-titanium, high-magnesia, alumina phosphorus ores and concentrates. Another version of the pyrometallurgical benefication without melted slag formation in a rotary kiln has been developed from the schemes for processing red mud of alumina manufacture and high-titanium concentrates. Means have been put up to improve schemes available for lex iron ore processing with primary emphasis on material pretreatment before blast furnace and steelmaking processes. Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite conentrate oxidized pellets possess low strength at reduction. The technique suggested for pelletizing in the controlled atmosphere improves the afore said pellet metallurgical properties. Prodution of metallized pellets in a conveyor roasting machine holds considerable promise for blast furnace and steelmaking processes. In processing the high-sulphur iron ores still another technique is proposed to roast the fluxed pellets with 95% and more desulphuration.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research programme being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the const- ruction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipe- line crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research programme is discussed.

The success of any blast is dependent on the accuracy of the blast design and field controls placed at the shot location. The procedure by which the data is collected and analyzed is paramount to accomplishing the anticipated blast results. lf the geometry of the blast is not measured correctly, then the results will not meet expectations. Measuring the geometry and compensating for bole hole deviations is crucial not only to the lnitlal blast but also for any consecutive blasts. Excessive bore hole deviation can cancel any new technology in use. However the instruments and skills required solving this Issue are readily available.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Certains aspects de ce projet le rendaient intéressant pour utiliser la modélisation numérique en même temps que d’autres méthodes conventionnelles pour la conception des boucliers. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. This paper gives the background to the development of solvent extraction processes for the recovery of metals from aqueous solutions. Its growing importance in Australia for the recovery of both uranium and copper is dis- cussed, as well as the developments in mixer-settler design as applied to recent plants. The economic significance of solvent extraction as an alterna- tive to cementation is discussed and important features of each process are highlighted by comparison of costs for each process in a hypothetical situa- Tion.
