The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. El proyecto consiste en explotar el cuerpo mineralizado por encima del nivel 400. Sin embargo, las condiciones para la mineralización son insuficientes. En este sentido, el presente texto presenta una alternativa de explotación mecanizada donde el cuerpo mineralizado tolere los niveles altos de temperatura a través de un nuevo block que se aplique en la profundización del ore-body y puede minimizar los costos operativos que esto conlleva.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. and an exasperated voice on the other end says, “There’s been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men!” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There’s something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong!” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings and an excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down both the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks!” As if this isn’t enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again and a stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Company No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine!” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, however, if this could happen, what on earth do you do? Although we all like to think that “It can’t happen to me,” we all must admit that mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. Your response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This paper will examine the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical “disaster” and then present a systematic crisis management response. While each situation is different, there are general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action.

"In this study, the recycling conditions of waste liquor obtained after the production of tungsten boride powder from calcium tungstate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and the following hydrochloric acid leaching were investigated in detail. Environmentally unfriendly and extremely acidic (pH~ -0.3) liquor consisting of calcium, magnesium, and boron ions was treated with 1 M sodium carbonate solution to precipitate magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate phases. The obtained amorphous precipitates were heated up to the temperature of 400°C for re-crystallization. As a result, MgO, CaC03 and CaMg(C03)z phases were obtained, while sodium, boron, chlorine ions were remain in the solution. The present study is still in progress.IntroductionSelf-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is one of the techniques used in the production of a variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers [ 1, 2]. The reaction becomes selfsustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture, after initiation in SHS process. SHS products may contain the mixture of several unwanted compounds and elements. Therefore following acidic leaching process may be needed to purify the target product. In the previous study, calcium tungstate (Ca W04), magnesium (Mg) and boric acid (B20 3) mixture were reacted to produce tungsten boride powder by SHS process according to the Reaction 1. Then, magnesium and calcium containing byproducts (i.e. MgO, Mg3B206 and Ca3B206) found in the SHS product were leached out by using concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to obtain pure tungsten boride powder [3].Ca W04 + 0.5B203 + 4.5Mg = WB + 4.5Mg0 + Cao (1)After the leaching, filtrate solution consisting of different amounts of magnesium, calcium, and boron requires additional treatment for the environmentally acceptable disposal.Several works were carried out about magnesium precipitation conditions and kinetics from brines. Rabadzhieva et al. investigated the precipitation of Mg(OH)z from brines by using NaOH as well as caustic soda [ 4]. Turek ve Gnot investigated the precipitation efficiency of Mg(OH)z for the temperature range between 10-40°C, while the reaction was kinetically experimented by Alamdiri et al [5, 6]. Homogeneous precipitation of nesquehonite (MgC03.3H20) by the reaction of MgCli with (NH4)2C03 in supersaturated solutions and factors that influence the precipitation of MgC03.3H20, such as reaction temperature, initial concentration, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied by Wang et al [7]. The precipitation of Mg(OH)z by calcium hydroxide from aqueous solutions was studied by Baird et al. [8]. Stratful et al. focused on conditions influencing the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate from wastewaters [9]. 1031"

"Repairing and replacing the nation’s aging and crumbling infrastructure has become a major issue with the American public. It is no secret that the upkeep of roads, tunnels, bridges, and water and waste water facilities has been neglected for decades. Cities, states and towns across the United States are now grappling with these issues, ones that will take decades and billions of dollars to fix.Because of this infrastructure issue, the North American tunneling industry is flourishing. Cities across the country are looking to go underground to alleviate traffic issues, transporting water and waste water to more people in more efficient ways.In October, the seventh annual Cutting Edge conference was held in Atlanta, GA. Put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Britain’s Tunnelling Journal, about 175 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world attended. Attendees included owners, designers and contractors. An accompanying exhibit included 28 companies.The theme of the two-day conference was Advances in Tunneling Technology. Speakers examined the latest advances in tunneling technology, its methodology and how these advances can be harnessed to assist upcoming major tunneling projects. The conference featured a tailored, high-end, single-track program of subject-specific presentations that focused on innovation and practical experience. Two in-depth panel discussions at the end of each day were also included.Patricia Mulroy was a keynote speaker on Monday. She is senior fellow for climate adaptation and environmental policy at The Brookings Institution. Like many others, Mulroy believes the U.S. infrastructure in in a state of disrepair. But, she said, no one wants to talk about it. “We need to have a conversation about infrastructure. We cannot be afraid to talk about building it and the cost.” For this to happen, though, the nation needs leadership."

Louisiana experienced deeper and increased drilling during 1934, resulting in the discovery of five new fields: Bosco, Acadia and St. Landry Parishes; Lake Hermitage, Plaquemines Parish; Roanoke, Jefferson Davis Parish; Gillis, Calcasieu Parish; and Four Isle, Terrebonnc Parish. New sands were discovered at New Iberia, Iberia Parish; Lake Washington, Plaquemines Parish; Sligo, Bossier Parish; and in the Rodessa gas field, Caddo Parish. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil and gas lands in North and South Louisiana, extensive geophysical work in the Gulf Coastal area, and increased interest in the development of flank production on piercement type domes, resulting in the acquisition of flank acreage and the leasing of several shallow domes in the Gulf Coast and Interior salt-dome areas. The total oil production for Louisiana during 1934 was 32,529,082 bbl., an increase of 6,929,280 bbl. over 1933. The total daily production at the end of the year from 2421 wells was 102,752 barrels. North Louisiana During the year, 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells during 1933. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,274,050 bbl. as compared with 10,023,580 bbl. during 1933, a decline of 749,530 bbl. The normal decline in the old fields and especially in the Zwolle area was partly offset by increased production in the Converse field, Sabine Parish, and by acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Caddo fields. There were no new fields discovered during 1934. During the year R. W. Norton enlarged the boundaries and reserves of the Rodessa gas field. A series of gas-bearing sands, was discovered in J. B. French, No. 1-B, sec. 34, 23 N. 16 W., below the oolitic lime found at 5500 ft. in which formation all previous wells had been completed. The total depth of this well was 5825 ft. The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. In Chapter 1 we mentioned that up to three components are considered to represent the variability of regionalized variables : a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. In Chapter 2 we considered some of the models based on the assumption of randomly distributed values: the random component was assumed to be the only one present. In Chapters 3 to 11, more general but also more complex models were described, based on the assumption that the values were correlated with the possible presence of random noise. In this chapter we introduce a model used to analyse non- stationary data, for which a deterministic component (or drift) must be assumed. This model will be used for estimation purposes, and the corresponding optimal linear estimation procedure is known as universal kriging. The theory of universal kriging is much more complex than the theory of kriging. Fortunately, in the majority of mine valuation problems the drift can be ignored and the simpler form of kriging can be used.

The objective of extensive underground experimentation on three longwall coal faces was to improve the stability of mechanised longwall faces through investigation of the relations between support resistance and convergence and resultant deformation of roof and face strata. In particular the influence of high setting and yield pressures on several strata and support parameters was studied in great depth. Increased setting pressures resulting in an increase in setting load densities from 0.15 MN/m2 to O.45 MN/m2 were shown to reduce convergence, face spalling roof flaking, lateral movement of roof and floor, extrusion of the face wall and progressive failure of the coal wall ahead of the face. This was shown to result mainly from the change in roof strata deformation from a wedge shaped compression zone with tension at the face edge to an even beam shaped compression zone over the face area. Debris thickness above the support canopy and below the base was observed to be the one of the most variable parameters which influenced the support characteristics particularly the rate of load acceptance by supports and the roof to floor convergence. A setting load density of 0.4 MN/m2 to 0.5 MN/m2 was found to be optimum under soft to moderately strong sandstone roofs. The authors demonstrated that use of guaranteed set valves with powered supports contribute to good strata control, reduce face down-time and increase face productivity.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes a method of horizontal drilling in an oil-producing formation underlying a 400-acre, approximately square plot of land in the Franklin Heavy oil field in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County, Pa. The method, which was developed on two previous projects in Ohio, 3/ consists of sinking a shaft to the bottom of a shallow oil sand and drilling holes in a general horizontal plane outward from the chamber in a pattern similar to that of the spokes of a wheel. The project was undertaken by the Venango Development Corporation in an attempt to find an efficient method of recovering oil from partly depleted sand formations.The Venango Development Corporation is composed of the following oil-producing and oil-refining companies and individuals: South Penn Oil Co., Forest Oil Corporation, Kendall Refining Co., Minard Run Oil Co., Quaker State Oil Refining Co., The Pennzoil Co., Alliance Oil Corpo¬ration, United Refining Co., Franklin Creek Refining Corporation, Canfield Oil Co., Pennsylvania Refining Co., Page Oil Co., Freedom Oil Co., D. W. and D. S. Grant, and J. P. Herrick, C. M. Davison and N. V. V. Franchot. Engineering features of the project were supervised by a committee off three engineers A. J. Saxe, chairman, W. M. Shoemaker, and C. N. Pfohl, who supervised the excavation of the shaft and the drilling of the first two holes by alternately spending a week at a. time at the project. The drilling method was under patent license from Leo Ranney, who served as technical advisor to the Venango Development Corporation; in addition, he furnished the design for the shaft and work chamber."

Chapter 6 examined autotherrnal smelting of pure chalcopyrite concentrate with 50 mass% O2-50 mass% N2 blast. It showed that production of 1500 K products with this blast requires: 181 kg of pure oxygen 337 kg of air per tonne, of concentrate. It also showed that the grade of matte produced with this blast is 58% Cu. This chapter re-examines autotherrnal smelting by asking: (A) WHAT COMPOSITION BLAST (MASS% 02 -MASS% N2), 298 K, WILL AUTOTHERMALL Y PRODUCE 65% Cu MATTE 1500 K FROM PURE CHALCOPYRITE CONCENTRATE? (B) HOW MUCH PURE OXYGEN AND AIR WILL BE NEEDED? These are important questions for flash? smelting because furnace operators usually want to send specific composition matte to converting. This chapter shows how a specified matte can be produced autotherrnally with 298 K oxygen-air blast. Later chapters show how it can be done with hot blast, hydrocarbon combustion, different concentrates etc.

Processes for the removal of phosphorus from iron or steel are steadily assuming greater importance in view of the abundance of high-phosphorus iron-ore and the diminishing supply of pure ore. In the present methods of removing phosphorus by the basic open-hearth or basic Bessemer process, or even by electric processes, complete control over the metallurgical conditions is either impossible or has not yet been realized. The removal of phosphorus has so long been accomplished along certain well-defined lines, that when the electric furnace made its appearance metallurgists adhered to the same old reactions used in the older processes and failed to appreciate and take advantage of the new forces at their disposal. One object of the present paper is to set forth more clearly the metallurgical reactions by which phosphorus can be removed from iron, and to show the necessity of controlling the conditions, and particularly the temperature, by means other than combustion in the furnace-chamber. Invariably, the commercial removal of phosphorus has been accomplished by oxidation. The reactions involved in oxidation of phosphorus in general consist, first, of the formation of P2O5 and second, the combination of this oxide with lime, forming calcium phosphate, which latter is held in a slag high in iron oxide. In the present-used processes, the phosphorus is never removed without the assistance or presence of considerable quantities of iron oxide. Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

ABSTRACT : Rock mass classifications RMR, Q and GSI do not suggest decreasing modulus ratio with the decrease in the quality of rock. These have been linked to joint factor, Jf , for better prediction. An engineering classification is suggested based on strength and modulus applicable to both intact and jointed rocks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Fels Masse Klassifizierungen RMR, schlägt Q und GSI daß das Abnehmen von modulus Verhältnis mit der Abnahme in der Qualität des Felsen nicht vor. Diese sind zu gemeinschaftlichem Faktor, Jf, für bessere Voraussage verknüpft worden. Eine technische Klassifizierung wird auf der Basis auf Kraft und modulus vorgeschlagen die zutreffend sind zu beiden unversehrten und jointed Felsen. RESUME: RMR de classifications de masse de Rocher, Q et GSI ne suggèrent pas la proportion de modulus décroissante avec la diminution dans la qualité de rocher. Improvements in computer technology and associated software have allowed the improvement and development of more advanced ventilation modeling software packages including those that have the ability to simulate the effects of a mine fire on the ventilation system in terms of heat, smoke and gas distribution. This ability has real applications for the mining industry in terms of emergency planning, training and response. The primary focus of this paper will be the benefits to training programs that this type of software can provide to all types of training for various personnel, from the newly hired inexperienced miner, mine rescue, atmospheric monitoring personnel and emergency evacuation drills. The results of the simulations can then be used to give miner?s more detailed information on what types of conditions they may face based on the type and location of the fire and the program itself can be used to manipulate the ventilation system in a way that emergency response personnel may (i.e. tear down stoppings to reduce airflow to the fire area) and see the effects in real-time.
