THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a family of dry magnetic concentrators which, when used in conjunction with a dry grinding mill such as an Aero-fall mill, will allow the production of a completely dry magnetite concentrate. Previous experience with extrusion of iron ore and with pelletizing of fine iron concentrates suggested that it might be possible to develop a method particularly suited to the agglomeration of completely dry concentrates which might have some practical advantages over other methods of agglomeration. Pelletizing is the preferred method of agglomerating very fine iron ore concentrates. Magnetite concentrate is fod to the pelletizing equipment in the form of a moist filter cake. Binders and plasticizers may be added if necessary, and the moisture content must be increased or adjusted to the percentage necessary to give good balling action and satisfactory green strength in the resulting moist pellets. The moist ore with a closely controlled water content of about 7 to 12 per cent moisture may be rolled into pellets by a snow-balling action in a pelletizing drum, a Lurgi pan, or a Mac-Dowell disc pelletizer. The resulting green pellets are fired by one of several alternative processes to produce a hard pellet which has sufficient strength to withstand handling and shipping.

The Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic problems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segregation. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute concentration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, musion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions aluminum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segregate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

Ventilation challenges are often encountered when an underground mine expands to new zones and it often is the case to make a thorough review of the existing system and assess immediate and future airflow needs at the desired quantity and quality. An unexpected mine plan change that calls for increased development and production from new areas can impose a strain on the existing ventilation system. Budgetary constraints can also demand creativity in design on the mine ventilation engineerÆs part. Since the addition of several mining horizons it had become obvious at the Meikle mine that something had to be done to increase airflow quantity and quality in the old main zones because most of the ventilation resources had been channelled for development in the new mining horizons. An airflow assessment of the existing system had to be performed and it was determined that the airflow quantity had to be increased by at least 30 per cent and the quality of the air had to be improved by reducing nuisance and respirable dust and at the same time reducing the airflow temperature before it was used in a few mining zones. At the conclusion of the airflow assessment it was determined that a third centrifugal fan would be installed on a new 3.05 m diameter borehole from surface to underground. By a careful study of temperature conditions over time it was determined that an evaporative cooling spray chamber would be sufficient to cool the airflow down from the high dry bulb temperatures observed down to saturation at the wet bulb temperature. At the same time excessive nuisance dust generated as a result of the airflow travelling a long way in a haulage drift will be knocked down in the spray chamber resulting in cool, clean air in the mining districts. Expansion of the existing surface ammonia refrigeration plant was out of the question for several reasons. The fact that the airflow was hot and dry meant that evaporative cooling spray chambers could achieve lower working temperatures at a very low cost compared to the expansion of the chilled water plant. The expansion of the ventilation system at Meikle mine and the use of evaporative cooling spray chambers were demonstrated to be very successful and the information presented in this paper can be of benefit to other mines experiencing the same ventilation problems as was the case at the Meikle mine.

AFTER more than fifty years of investigation and continuing failure in service, a satisfactory mechanism to explain stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous alloys is still lacking. The relative chemical activity of grain boundaries and adjacent grains, inferred from the boundary structure, has been used to explain intergranular cracking in a brass.' This concept is probably correct as a general hypothesis, but it requires much more extensive development in order to explain satisfactorily the observed phenomena. For example, the specific function of the solute in an alloy must be considered, because intergranular failure does not occur in pure metals,' which are structurally similar to homogeneous alloys. Also, in this connection, an inter crystalline fracture path in binary copper alloys can be changed to a transcrystalline path by relatively small ternary additions.' The fracture path in ß brass is predominantly transcrystalline,' in contrast with an inter crystalline path in a brass. Whether the two different fracture paths are the result of a difference in composition, crystal structure, or the state of long range order is unknown and cannot be determined with ß brass, because only the ordered state can be obtained at room temperature. The study of chemical activity at structural sites in the Cu-Zn system is restricted by the formation of opaque films in an ammonia environment in which stress corrosion cracking is generally observed. Furthermore, both components of the alloy are chemically active and the interpretation of observations is therefore relatively complicated. The Cu-Au system is a better choice for the purpose of studying structural factors. In particular, CuAu is very susceptible to cracking in ferric chloride and opaque films are not formed in this solution; it may be obtained in different states of long and short range order; and, finally, only copper is oxidized in dilute ferric chloride, which considerably simplifies the chemical problem. To provide information necessary for a more general explanation of stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous solid solutions, the following structural factors have been investigated in a Cu-Au alloy having a composition corresponding to Cu,Au: 1) the effect of long and short range order; 2) the structural sites from which copper is removed from the annealed and cold worked polycrystalline alloy; and 3) the effect of annealing time and temperature on structural reactions in the cold worked alloy. Experimental Procedure A Cu-Au alloy of nominal Cu3Au composition was cast from cathode copper and high purity gold and fabricated into sheet and wire. Chemical analysis for copper and gold indicated 48.92 wt pct Cu and 51.01 pct Au. Quantitative spectrographic analysis indicated 0.01 pct Ag, 0.002 pct Pd, 0.001 pct Pb, and 0.002 pct Fe, with traces of magnesium, silicon, and zinc. Presumably most of the remaining 0.055 pct corresponds to the limits of analytical precision. Heat treatments of wire and sheet were conducted in argon or vacuum. Based on the belief that operating details are a definite contributing factor to major economies, this paper traces the development of crushing cavity design in Symons cone crushers to attain maximum liner utilization. Wear rates are analyzed and compared in this presentation and drawings illustrate succeeding design changes. IN these times of rising labor and material costs, it has become more and more necessary that attention be paid to some operating details which, in their obscurity, may he the key to major economies. Liner wear in crushing cavities of secondary and tertiary crushers can become an appreciable cost item when the material to be crushed is hard and abrasive. This item of cost not only includes the value of the crushing members, but also more intangible costs such as labor and lost production due to more frequent replacement. The variables which are encountered in ores and minerals to be reduced; the design of plant and machine application; the sizes, shape, and fineness, characteristics of the crushed product; the moisture; hardness; friability; and abrasiveness of the material to be crushed are all influencing factors which must be taken into consideration in the selection of a crusher, and particularly in the design of crushing cavity and liners to be used in a crusher. Through a research program undertaken in cooperation with many operators of Symons cone crushers a new approach to crusher cavity design was made, resulting in the development of liners for specific operations which showed: 1—maximum utilization, as high as 70 to 80 pct of original weight of metal, and 2— maximum capacity of unit during the greater portion of its life. It has been found that liners so designed for a given operation will show added economies in power consumption, maintenance, and general wear and tear on the crushing unit. Initial work in the so-called tailoring of crushing cavitles was begun on the tertiary or fine crushing units where as a rule reduction ratios were low, varying from 3 to 6. Parallel or sizing zones in the lower portion of the crushing cavity were too long, resulting in a tendency to pack. It was found that very little additional crushing was done in the parallel zone after the initial impact in that zone and that a relatively small amount of' additional crushing was done by attrition, which required very careful feed control. A small amount of over-feeding would result in packing which not only consumed power but caused unnecessary liner wear as well. The illustrations which follow in this discussion will show only contours of crushing cavities, and for purposes of simplification the cavities will be considered only in their closed position. The first step, therefore. was to reduce the sizing zone to a minimum. This was done by removing the lower portion of the liner as shown in Fig. 1. The result of the change was a saving of 15 to 20 pct in liner cost, less power consumption, with no change in capacity. This change in design, while an improvement, did not go far enough. As wear took place, the change in the liner was not uniform throughout its entire length, resulting in a restriction of the feed opening and thereby loss of capacity. Furthermore, progressive wear of the liner had the effect of lengthening the parallel zone until finally the entire crushing cavity was all parallel zone, see Fig. 2. It is obvious from the reduced feed opening of the worn liner that the ability of the machine to receive material is lessened considerably. Furthermore, the long parallel zone with its worn, irregular profile did not operate at its highest efficiency. The first attempt to overcome this difficulty was carried out on a 5 1/2-ft crusher installed in a plant producing roofing granules. The material being crushed was a very hard graywacke and the crusher was closed-circuited with a screen having .232-in. slotted openings. A radical change in contour was developed, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Equal wear lines on both concave and mantle are designated 1, 2, 3, etc. The method of development of this contour is as follows: Since adjustment for wear is vertical, corresponding intersections of wear lines and vertical lines developed concave and mantle contours which maintained equal but lengthening wear surfaces in the parallel zone. The ideal contour, of course, is one in which the length of the parallel zone remains constant, but because of present foundry practice and heat treating characteristics this is impossible.

Beneath some of New York?s most iconic buildings ? The Met Life Building, the Helmsley Building, the Waldorf Astoria ? crews are busily at work on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s long-awaited East Side Access (ESA) project. In fact, it is 14 floors beneath the famed Grand Central Station where one of the centerpieces of the project, the new Long Island Railroad (LIRR) station terminal, is being blasted and carved into shape. When completed in 2016, the $7.3-billion ESA project will increase LIRR?s capacity into Manhattan and significantly relieve congestion at Penn Station. Currently, 37 LIRR trains per rush hour roll into the crowded Penn Station where many riders must then transfer to subway trains to complete their commute. When completed, the ESA tunnels will bring an estimated 160,000 riders directly to Grand Central Station, saving those riders 30 to 40 minutes. Studies have found that more people work within walking distance of Grand Central than Penn Station. ?The benefits of the project are tremendous,? MTA Capital Construction President Michael Horodniceanu told more than 340 industry professionals attending the UCA of SME?s George A. Fox Conference in New York on Jan. 26. ?The ESA is the first expansion of the LIRR in 100 years. It will increase the East River tunnel capacity by 50 percent and will help support job growth around Grand Central.?

The microstructure evolution during solution treatment plays an important role in mechanical properties of heat-treated aluminum alloys. In this paper, models were reviewed that can predict the microstructure evolution during the solutionizing process of the aging heat treatment of aluminum alloys. The dissolution ofMg2Si particles has been modeled as a diffusion process of Mg in the a-Al matrix. The evolution of volumetric fraction of fragmented silicon as a function of time and temperature was also considered. The growth and coarsening of silicon particles during the heat treatment was considered. It was found that constitutive equations and required property data for most of the phenomena that need to be considered are available. Several model parameters that need to be obtained from material characterization were identified. Pending the availability of these model parameters, this comprehensive model can be used to describe the microstructure evolution of aluminum alloys in order to optimize the solutionizing heat treatment for energy savings.

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

During the measurement of contact angle, a misty band was observed near the substrate. Hsien-Nan Ho and Shinn-Tyan Wu thought this was because the oxygen atoms on the interface migrate to the droplet surface to form an oxide band near the substrate. But from our experiments misty band appeared before the drop reach to the substrate. Theoretically speaking, the oxygen partial was the same everywhere in the vacuum furnace. So there was no condition to provide enough oxygen forming oxide. This appearance would be explained more reasonably with the optics principle. Most reflected light would be absorbed by the substrate and the light cannot reach the observation area, so the misty band formed.

"The use of the Electric Pulse Discharge method of materials destruction (EP) for disintegration of materials in an industrial-waste processing are examined. The principles and Experience of the development device of EP-disintegration have been described, the technological efficiency of disintegration of industrial minerals estimated.IntroductionThe Russian scientists have proposed and comprehensively studied the electric pulse (EP) technique which is applied in ores and materials disintegration [1, 2 ]. The different aspects of the problem have been presented by the authors in papers at many international congresses [3-6]. Recently the technique is intensively developed in many countries, and various disintegration installations are exhibited.Crashing and disintegration of ores by EP-method is characterized by high selectiveness of destruction. It provides better disclosure of mineral grains and prevent it from destruction. EPmethod reduces slurry formation. All this provides better mineral extraction at ore beneficiation and improves concentrate quality. It also prevents the product from polluting with equipment metal, inwall and grinding equipment material. The possibility to change the character of dynamic loading allows controlling grain-size composition and getting small-size product in contrast to mechanical method of crashing.The product of EP-crashing is characterized by less toughness and greater specific surface area of grains since the new surface is formed at splitting and chinks extension. The product is of high sorption and reactivity in chemical changes. Open grains of mineral spots correspond to their natural condition and it is of great importance for studying mineral.The principles of the development deviceLong-term studies of the technique carried out by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute ""Mekhanobr"" (S.Pertersburg), made it possible to substantiate principles of the disintegration installations design, make exploratory stands and technological installations to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. The construction design of disintegrating installations depends on many technological and physical factors. Of all the technological factors, the most significant one is to preserve the liberated product because it is the peculiarity of the EPdisintegration to have high selectivity of disintegration. The preservation of the mono-mineral product liberated from the rock mass means that this product is not overgrinding, which causes the loss of the product with slime in processing, and that the initial natural form of the mineral inclusion is also preserved because it is the size and the integrity of crystals that determines its cost value (precious minerals). On the one hand, it is provided by a stage disintegration technique, with the product classified after each stage, and, on the other hand, by selection of specific conditions of electric breakdown, which ensure high performance of electric breakdown and effective disintegration of material fragments, with the useful mineral inclusions preserved intact, with its size considerably exceeding the discharge gap. These conditions are provided by the appropriate geometry of electrodes, the discharge gap and the screen size due to the material’s nature and grain size."

Demand for arsenic exceeded supply, and major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers for the fourth consecutive year. Major demand for arsenic was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals. Legislation and Government Programs.-Effective April 1, 1981, taxes were collected from companies producing and importing 42 chemicals and petroleum products designated as hazardous, The revenue was used to begin funding of the 5-year, $1.6 billion "superfund" being established under Public Law 96-510, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, designed to help clean up spills of hazardous substances throughout the United States. As hazardous chemicals, arsenic metal and arsenic trioxide were taxed at the rate of $4.45 and $3.41 per short ton, respectively.

The magnetometer which was developed during the war for detecting submarines has proven exceedingly valuable in outlining deep-seated structures in oil exploration, and will be useful also to geologists in outlining regional structural features in the Precambrian. Our magnetometer has been developed to outline local and detail structures. 1 am quite sure that all geophysicists and geologists would agree with me that, in ore prospecting, it is important to obtain as much detailed information as possible. We know that, as we ascend from the ground and get away from the magnetic ore-bearing structures and orebodies, the magnetic intensity decreases rapidly, but, worse than that, we lose the details even faster. Figure l shows two strong, very sharp, magnetic 'highs' over two orebodies which, as our distance increases, rapidly merge into one fairly broad, moderately strong anomaly. If we drilled on this maximum, we would not encounter any of the orebodies. Therefore, we should fly the airborne magnetometer as close to the ground as possible in order to duplicate the results of the magnetic ground surveys. The first chance to accomplish this came with the helicopter, which is an exceedingly maneuverable aircraft. It can be landed in a cleared space not much more than fifty feet square. With floats, it can be landed anywhere, even in a swamp, on thin ice, or on soft snow. It can stand still in the air, hovering over a given point. It can ascend and descend vertically, fly sideways and even backwards, at the will of the pilot. It flies forward at any speed up to l00 miles an hour. The helicopter can be taken to any desired position at a given time. It can fly at any useful altitude from a few feet to several thousand feet above the ground. It can fly very close to the ground with safety. In bare areas, the survey flight may be performed a few feet above the ground. In forested areas, however, the flights, to clear the trees, must be made at l00 to 150 feet. To mark out a certain point, a small parachute-like marker may be draped over a tree or laid on the ground. This can be done from the helicopter without touching the ground.

Surface subsidence has been recognized as an inevitable consequence of underground coal mining for several centuries. The damage resulting from this phenomenon has been witnessed in rural as well as in urban areas and ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technological and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Using a rational method of subsidence prediction, it has been demonstrated in many coalfields that subsidence control can be successfully practiced in order to reduce and accommodate subsidence within environmentally acceptable levels. This paper presents the development and testing of a subsidence model, based on the zone area method. This technique is a refined development of the influence functions and it is capable of investigating a mining plan of any shape, thus facilitating both longwall and room-and-pillar mining systems. More specifically, this study can be divided into two major efforts: (a) The development of the zone area model. This formulation was designed to accommodate the analysis of an optimum number of zones, over the area of interest, both accurately and efficiently. (b) The testing of the computer techniques with appropriate field measurements. In order to accomplish this, published as well as unpublished information was collected and analyzed according to a regionalized scheme. This procedure minimized differences in subsidence characteristics between the various coalfields and allowed a regional validation of the predictive capabilities of the model.

"In electromagnetic casting, a liquid metal pool is partly supported by electromagnetic forces resulting from the interaction between induced currents and an alternating magnetic field. Stability of the metal surface is of paramount importance if the cast ingot is to be free from surface defects. Prior work by Garnier and Moreau had suggested that the magnetic field has no influence on the surface stability, but a more complete analysis at Berkeley suggested that surface perturbations are destabilized by the magnetic field once a critical magnetic field is exceeded. More recently we have employed a modified version of the software SOLA to compute the behaviour of a melt surface in the presence of an alternating field. The computed results support the theoretical analysis in predicting an unstable surface. Experimental work is now in progress to examine the stability of a mercury pool in the presence of an alternating field. Introduction and Previous InvestigationsElectromagnetic casting (EMC) is a technique widely employed in the aluminum industry to produce ingot for subsequent rolling. It is a ""continuous"" casting technique (illustrated in Fig. 1) producing ingots several meters high (and perhaps 1m by 2m in horizontal dimensions) at a casting speed of one or two mm. per second. The technology has gained acceptance because the metal is solidified without contact with a mold. Consequently the surface finish of the ingot is usually smooth and the ingot can be fed directly to rolling without machining, the surface (""scalping""). Scalping is necessary with alternative technologies (e.g., DC casting) where a mold is used. Consequently any disturbances that result in surface imperfections of EMC ingot are a serious matter. One type of imperfection is waviness on the surface of the ingot; a line drawn along the crest of a wave would run horizontally around the ingot. This imperfection may be caused by waves on the surface of the metal pool. As the waves reach the solidification line at the periphery of the metal they cause alternate outward and inward bowing of the meniscus at that point with attendant small (but significant) changes in ingot width. Elimination of building vibrations and similar disturbances minimize the occurrence of these surface waves but it is interesting to speculate whether there are disturbances of the metal pool that arise from the electromagnetic forces supporting the liquid metal. These forces are generated by the interaction of currents induced in the melt and the magnetic field produced by the current imposed on the inductor surrounding the melt. The present investigation has been concerned with whether the alternating magnetic field destabilizes the melt surface."

This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.

Introduction Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1958 at the Humphrey mine of Consolidation Coal Co. for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for several years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300 to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits (Spindler and Poundstone, 1960). Mining Research Division of Conoco Inc., the parent company of Consolidation Coal Co., began a research program in the early 1970s to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary results of this research have already been published (Thakur and Davis, 1977). To date nearly 4.5 km of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: • The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3% in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95%. • The methane concentration in the section return reduced to 50% of its original value immediately after the boreholes were completed, indicating a capture ratio of 50%. • The total methane emission in the section (rib and face emission plus the borehole production) did not increase but rather gradually declined with time. • Initial production from 300 m deep boreholes in the Pittsburgh seam varied from 3 m3/min to 6 m3/min but then slowly declined as workings advanced inby of the drill site (well head) exposing a larger surface area parallel to the borehole. Encouraged by these results, it was decided to design a horizontal drilling system that would be mobile and compatible with other face equipment. A mobile horizontal drill can be divided into three subsystems: the drill rig, the drill bit guidance system, and borehole surveying instruments. The drill rig provides the thrust and torque necessary to drill 75- to 100-mm diam holes up to 600 m deep and contains the mud circulation and gas cuttings separation systems. The drill bit guidance system guides the bit up, down, left, or right as desired. Borehole surveying instruments measure the pitch, roll, and azimuth of the borehole assembly. Additionally, it also indicates the thickness of coal between the borehole and the roof or floor of the coal seam. Thus, it becomes a powerful tool for locating the presence of faults, clay veins, sand channels, and the thickness of coal seam in advance of mining. In recent years, many other potential uses of horizontal boreholes have come to light, such as in situ gasification, longwall blasting, improved auger mining, and oil and gas production from shallow deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the hardware and procedure for drilling deep horizontal holes. The Drilling Rig [Figures 1 and 2] show the two components of the mobile drilling rig: the drill unit and the auxiliary unit. The equipment (except for the chassis) was designed by Conoco Inc. and fabricated by J. H. Fletcher and Co. of Huntington, WV. The drill unit. It is mounted on a four-wheel drive chassis driven by two Staffa hydraulic motors with chains. The tires are 369 X 457 mm in size and provide a ground clearance of 305 mm. The prime mover is a 30-kw explosion-proof electric motor which is used only for tramming. Once the unit is Crammed to the drill site, electric power is disconnected and hydraulic power from the auxiliary unit is turned on. Four floor jacks are used to level the machine and raise the drill head to the desired level. Two 5-t telescopic hydraulic props, one on each side, anchor the drill unit to the roof. The drill unit houses the feed carriage, the drilling console, 300 m of 3-m-long NQ, drill rods, and the electric cable reel for instruments. The feed carriage is mounted more or less centrally, has a feed of 3.3 m, and can swing laterally by ± 17°. It can also sump forward by 1.2 m. The drill head has a "through" chuck such that drill pipes can be fed from the side or back end. General specifications of the feed carriage are: [ ] The auxiliary unit. The chassis for the auxiliary unit is identical to the drill unit but the prime movers are two 30-kW explosion proof electric motors. It is equipped with a methane detector- activated switch so that power will be cut off at a preset methane concentration in the air. No anchoring props are needed for this unit. The auxiliary unit houses the hydraulic power pack, the water (mud) circulating pump, control boxes for electric motors, a trailing cable spool, and a steel tank which serves for water storage and closed-loop separation of drill cuttings and gas.

INTRODUCTION We will discuss here only the subway construction phase; that is, two to five years at a given location--not the long-term analysis. We also will compare some tunnel construction methods used for BART and in Los Angeles. Typically, urban planners and engineers try to balance a new mass transit system to include tunneled subways, cut-and-cover construction in city streets, and elevated guideways. Their decisions are based on many factors, most of which can be quantified. But there are some socio-economic-environmental factors which are almost intangible, or nonquantifiable, and these are rarely included in the final report for a rapid transit system. There are two reasons for this: First, it is difficult to evaluate disruptions and psychological inconveniences to individuals and to the community during the construction period, and even more difficult to assign costs because the valuations are always subjective. Second, the rapid transit project capital costs are given in the final report and the public knows them; but the intangible social costs are borne by the affected neighborhood community, not the entire city, and as such they are "hidden costs," which in fact may add as much as 25 percent to the total system cost.
