The creation and maintenance of a healthy working environment in surface mining operations require sustained efforts in pursuing advanced research initiatives toward the development and deployment of powered haulage technologies. This paper contains progress summary on a frontier research in truck dynamic control, vision and collision avoidance. This research is required to provide solutions to challenging problems regarding operator visibility in truck haulage in a surface mining environment. The paper focuses on truck control kinematics and dynamics, truck-haul road interactions, intelligent truck sensing, intelligent truck collision avoidance system, integrated system for situational awareness, augmented visualization and operator interface, and field testing and error variance modeling of developed technologies. A sensor suite of four subsystems, including front-side stereo-camera, front-side Doppler radar, close range sonar proximity sensors, and rear-side camera system have been recommended for developing a 360° truck operator vision to allow safe operations. This research initiative is significant because it will provide a strong basis for developing technologies to improve truck haulage safety in surface mines and construction sites.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report provides detailed information on worldwide bauxite production capacity by mine and country, including bauxite substitute materials in countries of the former Soviet Union, The information was compiled from a variety of domestic and international sources and was based on information available to the Bureau through December 31, 1994. Capacity data represent announced installed and planned capacities and do not necessarily reflect a U.S. Bureau of Mines judgment of actual mine operating levels or timing of planned expansions. The year-end capacity is the ?in place? capacity or estimated production capacity, whichever is larger.

The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

These will enable him to (1) arrange the minerals of a selected group of base metal mining districts in the order of their typicalities and (2) compute the degree of mineralogic association between the model so derived and a district external to the model. It must be remembered, of course, that the methods discussed in this article are no more powerful than the structure of the model used and the data available. "The AusIron process is a new development of the well established Ausmelt bath smelting technology(l). The development of this technology has been tied to the South Australian Steel and Energy (SASE) project which brings dedicated coal and iron resources together with this new technology. SASE is a joint venture between Ausmelt (40%), Meekathara Minerals (40%) and the South Australian Government through Mines and Energy South Australia (MESA) (20%). It will use a multiple lance furnace to process iron ore using steaming coal for both fuel and reductant.It is intended to build the simplest plant economically possible. Refinements such as preheating and prereduction of the ore are compatible with the technology but are not expected to be necessary in the first generation plant.The joint venture is negotiating with suitable partners for funding of the project through to commercial implementation at a target scale of2.5 mt/a of pig iron.ObjectivesAusIron aims to produce pig iron directly from steaming coal and from any of a variety of iron sources in a simple furnace system with a minimum of pre-processing of either coal or iron ore. Preheating and prereduction of ore are compatible with the technology but may not be necessary. The immediate aim is not to be the technology that uses the least quantity of coal to produce iron metal but rather the technology that uses the least number of dollars to produce metal.The chemistry of iron making is well known, probably better known than that of smelting of any other metal. Iron has been made for thousands of years and it is possible to make iron from charcoal and ore in a simple blast furnace the size of a beer barrel. The focus is therefore not making iron but rather making it more cheaply than it is made by current technologies. Large blast furnaces now set the standard and new technologies must perform better if they are to gain market share. It is still the cost of iron, energy units and capital going into these mega blast furnaces which ultimately set the market price for pig iron."

Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

"Conventionally, direct reduced iron (DRI) mixed with char from rotary furnace discharge is cooled down before separating the char via magnetic separator. The DRI must then be reheated for further downstream processing (i.e. smelting). Outotec has developed the PyroMagTM specifically to conserve thermal energy during this separation process. DRI is cleaned by feeding hot particles directly after reduction onto a rotating surface just above a stationary magnet assembly. This allows hot feeding of the clean DRI to the downstream equipment which renders the entire process more energy efficient.Continuous testing of the PyroMagTM was performed to verify design and separation. Because the use of DRI/char was not practical for test use, the pilot plant testing was conducted using a magnetite/sand mixture heated up to and beyond the Curie temperature of magnetite. The separation was efficient for both cold and hot processing with recoveries varying from 98.6% to 99.74%. As expected, the recoveries decreased to as low as 83.99% as the temperature was increased beyond the curie temperature of magnetite (585°C). Long term separation was thermally efficient and sustainable.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic drum separators are widely used in the mineral processing industry. These low to high intensity magnetic separators are used to concentrate various magnetic material, such as iron ore, and less magnetic materials, such as ilmenite and garnet from silica and other contaminantsThere are multiple classes of magnetism based on the effect that each material displays while in and out of a magnetic field. In a simplified fashion, which is more appropriate for mineral processing, the magnetic susceptibility of a mineral is used to define it as being ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or nonmagnetic. In this respect, minerals with varying degree of magnetic susceptibility can be selectively separated with different types of magnetic separation equipment in different stages of a process flow sheet. The lower strength magnets are employed early in the process to remove highly magnetic fractions. Later stages utilize greater magnetic fields for capture of less magnetically susceptible material."

A closure plan was developed for the Intera Pond Facility, a former acid leaching collection pond at the BHP Robinson Mining Operations. To properly close the Intera Pond Facility, an engineering plan that was both technical and cost effective was developed. A primary objective of this closure project was to demonstrate to State regulators that following the proposed plan would minimize further degradation of water resources. Field data demonstrated natural attenuation of metal enriched solutes via carbonate reactions. Prospective fate and transport modeling indicated that it would not continue to degrade waters of the State.

This report describes the second phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected synthetic slag compositions in the Ti02 -A1203 -FeO-Si02 -CaO-MgO system. Both the hot-stage microscope and the strip furnace (melting-holding-quenching technique) were used during test procedure to determine the effects of CaO, MgO, and SiO2 on the liquidus temperature of slags. The liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,241° to 1,900° C. The lowest liquidus temperature for each Ti02 plus A1203 plus FeO weight-percent generally occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. In this investigation substitution of either CaO or MgO for SiO2 and MgO for CaO raised the liquidus temperature of more than 50 percent of the reported base slags when Ti02, A1203, and FeO contents were held constant. The results of this investigation may serve as guidelines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetite concentrates or ores.

The 1983 Energy Plan calls for an increase in North Island coal production from both underground and opencast sources from the 1982/1983 production of 843 000 tpa to approximately 3.4 Mtpa within the ten year period to March 1993. This increased production is scheduled to come from the following sources: Huntly West No 1 underground mine reaching full production of 1.26 Mtpa. Huntly East underground mine increasing production to 750 000 tpa. The proposed new Huntly West No 2 mine producing 100 000 tpa in its first year of operation û 1992. The proposed Ohinewai opencast producing 920 000 tpa for supply to the steelmaking plant at Glenbrook, replacing Weavers opencast which will be worked out in 1990. Rotowaro opencast producing at 220 000 tpa (currently being achieved). Two additional sources of supply which are not scheduled to begin production for at least ten years, and both of which have been designated for coal fired thermal power generation, are the Maramarua and Mokau coalfields. It was originally envisaged that development of both coalfields would be a combination of underground and opencast mines. The form of development is yet to be confirmed by detailed feasibility studies. The location of the Maramarua, Ohinewai (Waikare Coalfield) and Mokau deposits is shown on Figure 1. Worley Consultants Limited, in conjunction with their partners Rheinbraun Consulting GmbH (Germany) and Longworth McKenzie Pty Limited (Australia) have been involved with investigations and mining assessments for the Maramarua, Mokau and Ohinewai prospects. The Maramarua and Mokau studies form part of the New Zealand Coal Resources Survey programme of updating information to the Pre-Feasibility Mining Assessment level before proceeding to detailed feasibility studies. The Ohinewai study was commissioned directly by Mines Division to investigate the feasibility of mining coal by 1989 before reserves at Weavers opencast are depleted. This paper describes typical studies which are now being commissioned by Mines Division to investigate large-scale mining development and the effect geotechnical-conditions may have on coal recovery. The magnitude of these projects is reflected in the proposed outputs û up to2 Mtpa from individual mines û and the introduction of new continuous mining systems for both underground and opencast mines on a scale which has not previously been contemplated.

THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent;, a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

The aerospace and automotive industries are facing a significant risk for cumulative trauma disorders from high-repetition, long-duration tasks. Additional risk factors such as shocks, vibrations and sustained uncomfortable postures oftentimes contribute to musculoskeletal, neurological injuries associated with the hand-arm system. The power tools used for the operation reduce the comfort and working efficiency of the operators, thus lowering their health and safety and the quality of operation. This paper investigates the fastening operation on the assembly line of a major aerospace company for quantifying hand-arm vibrations with the objective of developing a dynamic model of the hand-arm system. The model will be used to ascertain the effect of the various risk factors on the quality of the operation. Experiment Setup A system of three tri-axial accelerometers is used to collect vibrations entering the hand-arm system and their positioning follows the ISO-5349 standard. Reaction force during the operation is measured using a force sensor. The posture of the hand-arm system is measured using two goniometers and one torsiometer. The pilot study conducted has two subjects and one pistol-grip power tool. The experiment setup and positions of various sensors is depicted in Figure 1. [ ] Analysis Method The analysis consists of transmissibility of vibrations and frequency weighted acceleration based on the recommendations of the ISO-5349 standard [1,2]. From its discovery in 1845 ion exchange has continually improved technically to an extent where it is now in wide use commercially in many industries including mining and environmental. Purity Systems Inc. (PSI) has made advances in the development of metals capture materials such that metals recovery using the PSI patented technology is now a viable economic process for many previously rejected applications. PSI, in conjunction with Ammtec Limited, have developed cost effective advanced processes and systems.The presentation will introduce the chemistry behind the materials and its relevance to the chelation and ion exchange methods. The applicability of the PSI resin technology to copper, cobalt and nickel recovery and the engineered systems options available will be discussed as well as piloting at Titan Resources NL Radio Hill mine at Karratha in Western Australia.

The deep-buried rock surrounding the Jinping II Hydro-power Station was taken as the engineering background. Using model specimens of classified rock materials to simulate fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress conditions, the test about acoustic propagation law on single fracture model of specimen under different pressures and different angles were carried out. The variation of p-wave velocity in fractured rock mass and axial stress-strain relationship in the whole test procedure was also studied. Based on damage mechanics principle and the acoustic wave propagation in cracked rock mass, comparative study on damage constitutive relation of fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress in consideration of equivalent strain and equivalent energy was performed. As the results showed, with the change of axial stress level under constant confining pressure, the change in wave velocity can be divided into three stages: slow increase (small variation in amplitude), rapid reduce (large variation in amplitude ) and accelerate reduction. When the confining pressure is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the decrease of the crack angle. When the crack angle is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the increase of confining pressure.It is identified that the theoretical calculation results of constitutive relation about elasto-plastic damage model containing variable wave velocity in the fractured rock mass is consistent with the model test results.Therefore,the constitutive relation can provide reasonable suggestions for engineering practice.

Preparation strontium carbonate with celestite concentrate by flotation is studied by agglomeration-reduction roasting process. It is shown that, the drop strength of green pellet is greater than 4 times?(0.5m) -1 under the balling conditions of moisture of 9% and time of 18~20min. Lignin xanthate obviously improves the ballability of the celestite concentrate due to the increase of surface hydrophilicity, therefore, the balling rate is increased, as well as green ball strength. The drop strength of 7 times?(0.5m) -1 can be obtained when the lignin xanthate dosage is 0.5%~1%. Reduction roasting with anthracite shows that the SrSO4 conversion is 82%~83% for celestite concentrate pellet, under the optimal conditions of roasting temperature of 1100~1150? and time of 30min, and it is 10% higher than conversion of celestite lump under the same conditions. The strontium carbonate are prepared after roasted pellets are leached, purified and carbonated, and the SrCO3 content is higher than 97% , while the content of CaCO3 is less than 0.3%.

As much as half of the world's known reserves of elemental sulfur occur at or near the earth's surface in natural or native sulfur deposits of volcanic or sedimentary origin. Yet these reserves constitute only a small percentage of the world's supply. Looked on as marginal materials, they remain relatively untouched despite the current demand and improved prices for sulfur. There are two main reasons for this. The first is the nature and occurrence of the deposits. They are generally small and widely scattered in remote and often arid locations, and the gangue constituents of the ore are apt to vary considerably-not only between deposits but also within deposits. The second reason is the lack of workable and economically feasible processes for recovering sulfur from the ores in such deposits. Historically, the older thermal processes in which the sulfur is vaporized away from the gangue were probably the most successful, but they were inefficient and created pollution problems. A few of the historical processes remain in operation today. Recently, however, an improved thermal process to handle all sulfur-containing surface ores has been designed under sponsorship of the Pan American Sulfur Co. A schematic diagram of this process is shown in Fig. 1. The process equipment consists of a paddle trough conveyor retort which is operated as a closed unit to prevent any air or oxygen from entering the system. Ground surface sulfur ore and heated pebbles are fed to this unit simultaneously. The ore and heated pebbles are slowly conveyed and continuously mixed down the conveyor retort. Heat from the pebbles and heat supplied to the outside walls of the trough conveyor retort raise the ore temperature above the boiling point of sulfur. Sulfur vapors and steam originating from moisture in the ore are ducted to a condenser, and the sulfur is recovered as a liquid. The gangue and the pebbles are discharged from the trough conveyor and separated-the gangue being discarded, and the pebbles being conveyed to a direct-fired rotary pebble heater where they are reheated before they are again charged into the rotary trough conveyor retort. The hot gases which pass countercurrent to the pebbles are ducted to the outside of the rotary trough conveyor where they pass countercurrent to the flow of the ore in order to maximize heat recovery and utilization.

Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid: and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek "bromos," meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures with a melting point of -7.2" C and a boiling point of 58.78" C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12 and gas weighs 7.59 gpl at standard conditions. As the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1826 and first prepared in quantity in 1860. Distribution Bromine is widely distributed in nature and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60- 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H. E. Boeke (1 908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash de- posits; in halite in salt beds; salt in oil shales; and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in the literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964). Sources and Reserves The sources and reserves of bromine, given in [Table 1], appear ample to meet present and foreseeable requirements in all producing countries. With the occurrence of bromine salts in sea-water and other brines, the potential for bromine production is worldwide. It has been estimated that 99% of all commercially recoverable bromine is in the ocean. However, actual subterranean brines having a higher bromine content than seawater will continue to be the preferred sources of bromine for the foreseeable future. Markets and Prices About 17% (1968) of bromine produced is used in its elemental form, with the balance consumed as bromides and bromates. The largest use for bromine is ethylene dibromide which, together with tetraethyl lead, are used as an antiknock additive in gasoline. Tetra-ethyl lead is the antiknock agent. Ethylene dibromide combines with the lead after combustion in the engine to form a volatile com- pound that escapes from the engine with the exhaust gases.
