The dynamic response of holdup in a continuous ball mill has a direct influence on the rate function of grinding kinetics and is useful for predicting the variation in the size distribution of the finished product with time.A model was proposed involving three interacting, completely mixed chambers and this was used to derive analytically the transfer function of the system, from which the unit impulse response and the unit step response of the holdup with feed rate were obtained.The theory was confirmed by comparing it with previously published experimental data for the residence time distribution of particles passing through a ball mill.

Six years ago, I addressed the annual meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials on "Fuels of Today and Tomorrow."3/ Since then, our country has been drawn into another great war of veritably global extent, with unprecedented demands on fuels, foods, and materials in general. My purpose in this address is to review the changes in fuel supply and demand since 1937 and to give you my views on the outlook for the future. CONDITIONS IN. 1237 Daring 1936 the United States produced and consumed one-third of the world production of coal, two-thirds of the petroleum, and about 95 percent of the natural gas. Two-thirds of the oil produced in all countries since the discovery well was drilled in 1859 had come from American wells. With the exception of the three depression years 1931, 1932, and 1933, new oil reserves were being discovered since 1924 well in excess of our increasing rate of consumption. Discoveries of natural gas, likewise, were tremendous in volume, and this fuel was being transported to most parts of the country by pipe lines; some of them more than 1,000 miles long. We had all kinds of mineral fuels in abundance and at prices that did not stint anyone in the maximum utilization of the mechanical devices that were being developed on every hand. No one suspected that the time might come in a few years when, gasoline would be doled out to some of us at the rate of 1-1/2 gallons a week or that many of our fuel-oil furnaces would have to be converted to burn coal. Of course, these restrictions are due to unusual war conditions, such as lack of coastwise tanker transportation, unprecedented demand for aviation gasoline, and the shortage of rubber for automotive tires. However, these shortages do call our attention to the vital part of petroleum reserves in our country's future position among nations. Therefore, it is of special interest to review briefly the relations of recent supply and demand with respect to our various mineral fuels.

Diesel powered vehicles have made underground mines more efficient, but with the advent of DPM regulations, in most cases, extra ventilation and/or engine emissions control technology will be required. Using fuel cell powered vehicles will not need these measures to be taken. Nine US underground mines of varying production rates and mining methods were studied to determine possible ventilation reductions if their diesel fleets were replaced with identical fuel cell powered vehicles. Factors that might limit ventilation reductions, such as heat and the effects on other pollutants were determined for each mine. The ventilation cost savings and other benefits of fuel cell vehicles show that when they become commercially available they have the potential of being viable alternatives to diesel vehicles.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. For many years the City of Prescot, about 8 miles northeast of Liverpool, has been the home of British Insulated Cables, Ltd., one of the largest wire mills and manufacturers of electrical equipment in England. Since this location is close to the industrial center of the country and the seaboard, with good railroad transportation facilities, it was a logical site for the new refinery. Early in April, 1932, the writer was called upon to prepare a preliminary layout and estimate of cost of the proposed plant, and shortly afterward, following a discussion of these figures with officials of British Insulated Cables, in England, the decision was reached to proceed immediately with construction of the plant. The refinery was built by British Insulated Cables, Ltd. Designing of the plant was started early in May, 1932, orders for equipment being placed as rapidly as possible. On July 18 the first steel was erected and the first charge was cast on Jan. 5, 1933. No difficulties of any consequence were experienced in starting the plant and the grade of copper produced was quite satisfactory after the first charge. The initial capacity desired was 2500 tons of refined copper per month. Since only one furnace was to be built, it was necessary that it should have sufficient reserve capacity to catch up after unavoidable shutdowns. It was also necessary to lay out the plant so that it would operate efficiently at this tonnage and at the same time permit expansion in the future, if necessary, to several times its original capacity. In order to meet these conditions and also to take full advantage of the space available, the layout shown in Fig. 1 was adopted. The principal plant structures are a blister storage aisle, casting building, wire-bar storage building and a coal-pulverizing building. Additional smaller structures include a brick and charcoal shed, pumphouse, drill room, water-cooling tower, clay-preparation shed, substation and plant office. On February 5, 1973, Eastern Associated Coal Corp began shortwall mining in their Federal No. 1 Mine, thus marking the first attempt in the United States at modern shortwall mining, i.e., using a continuous miner to extract coal open-ended from pillars 100 to 200 feet wide, under the protection of a self¬-advancing roof support system (1)1/. Since then, four additional shortwall faces have been operated. While the number of face-years of shortwall experience in the United States is limited, this experience has been anything but uniform. Differences in operator motivation, coalbed parameters, geologic conditions, panel dimensions, and face equipment all have contributed to a wealth of knowledge which can provide guidance for the design of future shortwalls. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of shortwall mining in the United States and to assess its value to the U.S. coal industry in terms of the health and safety of the miner, the percentage of coal recovered, coal production, worker productivity, and relative cost performance.

Ferromanganese continues to be an indispensable requirement in steel manufacture. Approximately 470,000 of the 80 per cent ferro-alloy was consumed in 1929 and increasing amounts will be required annually by the steel industry unless some satisfactory substitute is found. An average of 14 pounds of metallic manganese is used for each ton of steel produced, The principal use of manganese is for de-oxidation of the metal in the steel refining processes, although a considerable amount is also used for the production of special manganese steels. Unfortunately, domestic production of manganese ore is inadequate to meet normal peace-time requirements, not to mention increased abnormal war-time demands. The rather large quantities of low-grade manganiferous iron ores which occur in the Coruna Range in Minnesota have for a number of years greatly appealed to those interested in the development of a domestic source of the supply. The North Central Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has made an elaborate study of the possibilities of the pyrometallurgical treatment of ores from these deposits and much of the valuable information secured by them has already been published.

THERE are two distinct questions associated with the concept of temperature: one is practical, the other is theoretical. Our fundamental ideas of temperature come from our senses; we know what we mean by the words "hot" and "cold," or by saying one body is "hotter than another." But for scientific purposes words require definition. We are guided in this matter, as in all other scientific questions, by our knowledge of facts of observation. When two bodies at different temperatures are intimately associated, e.g., a hot stone is, dropped into a pail of water, our experience is that ultimately they come to the smile temperature as far as our senses can tell; the hot body becomes colder and the cold body hotter. In the case of a block of ice, immersed in, water, the ice melts, forming cold water, which then mixes with the other water, the final result being water colder than the original water. From our knowledge of the nature of heat phenomena, we learn that in this process one body loses, heat and the other gains heat, the condition of equilibrium being, one in which each body gains Is much heat as it loses. It is distinctly assumed in this statement that only two bodies are concerned in the transfer of heat, all other bodies being rendered in some way impervious to heat. The body that in the process loses heat is said to have the ?higher temperature" while the body that gains the heat is said to have the "lower temperature;" and, when thermal equilibrium is reached, the two bodies are said to have the "same temperature." Consequently, the temperature of a body may be defined, is it was by Maxwell, as "its thermal state considered with reference to its power of communicating heat to other bodies."

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing technique whereby a stream of metal powder is consolidated by a focused laser beam on the surface of a substrate or engineering component. The interaction zone between the laser beam and powder particles is scanned superficially, generating tracks of deposited material. The tracks are overlapped in a deposition strategy in accordance with slices of a CAD model. Successive layers of material are built up to fabricate a near net shape part. In this work, the technique is used to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs) by using an elementally blended feedstock combining metal and ceramic powders in the melt pool, which melt and solidify to create the required morphology. Ti6Al4V + TiC MMCs were produced with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% reinforcing ceramic, and Zr + TiC MMCs were fabricated with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC. The deposited thin walls were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and indentation testing. In both systems, the analysis revealed the presence of partially melted TiC particles embedded in the metal matrix along with fine dendrites of re-solidified ceramic. The dendritic structures in the Ti-based composites were confirmed as TiC, whereas in the Zr-based composite the Zr metal reacts with theTiC to form ZrC, leaving Ti in solid solution. Both the MMCs show an increase in microhardness with increasing ceramic (carbide)content, reaching a peak HV0.1 value of 500 in the Zr- based MMC and HV0.1 of 550 in the Ti based MMC.

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

Conditions have changed since then substituting comparative comfort for previous austerity and privation, but the quest-ing spirit, the everlasting optimism, the perseverance in the face of frustration .and disappointment still exists.It exists with the prospector who more often than not is a company geologist; it exists with the shareholder enjoying through his investment a vicarious participation in this wonderful, exciting industry and not the least with those people who have chosen the goldmining industry as their career.

From 2007 to 2009, one NA Quarry and Construction Business experienced a series of flyrock incidents. In the Spring of 2009, this business declared that the frequency and severity of Flyrock Incidents had reached an unacceptable level. A Flyrock Elimination Program was launched.

The variation of binary-diffusion coefficients with composition in the liquid Bi-Sn system at 300°C was measured using the capillary-reservoir technique. The experimental coefficients did not exhibit a simple composition dependence. A number of tests were also made to determine the effect of variation of density with composition on convection within the capillaries. These tests indicate that the density changes arising from composition duferences may give rise to high diffusion coefficients unless care is taken to maintain a stable configuration. In recent years there has been considerable interest in diffusion in liquid metals. However, the bulk of the work done to date has involved measurements of self-diffusion or diffusion of dilute concentrations of "solute" metals. Because there are possible applications to liquid phase processing of metal alloys and since additional data may help to clarify the nature of diffusion in liquid metals, investigations of the concentration variation of diffusion coefficients in binary alloys have been undertaken. Of past studies only two have covered large ranges of binary composition. Niwa et al.' investigated the Pb-Sn, Bi-Pb, and Bi-Sn systems and Grace and Derge2 investigated the Bi-Pb system. Because of the discrepancy between the data of these investigators, it was deemed desirable to check the possibility of convection arising from the variation of density with composition. The capillary-reservoir technique of Anderson and saddington3 was chosen for the present investigation since it has been widely used for measurements involving dilute solute concentrations and it was the technique used by Grace and Derge.2 It was necessary, however, to modify the normal procedure of using a pure metal bath to avoid measurement of integral diffusion coefficients over large concentration ranges. The alloy system chosen for study was the Bi-Sn system for which there are some data available.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In order to utilize the capillary-reservoir technique for measurements of diffusion coefficients as a function of composition, it was necessary to modify the normal procedure slightly. This modification consisted of using a reservoir composition which was only slightly different from that in the set of capillaries, in order that the integral coefficients measured might be taken over a small composition range and might thereby be assumed to approximate the differential coefficient at some average composition between that of the capillary and that of the bath. It was found that a composition difference of approximately 0.10 mass fraction provided a satisfactory compromise between a small increment in composition and reasonable accuracy in measuring changes of composition. The alloys were prepared from tin and bismuth of 99.999 pct purity. The materials were first cleaned of surface oxides, then weighed and melted to form a homogeneous alloy in a Pyrex filling apparatus. The capillaries used were of precision bore Pyrex tubing 1.000 *0.005 mm bore. Capillaries of various lengths (from 2.85 to 5.85 cm) were cut and sealed at one end by fusing a 3-mm Pyrex rod to the end. The capillaries were filled by inserting them into the filling chamber, evacuating the chamber, submerging the capillaries, and pressurizing the chamber with argon. Two sets of capillaries were prepared for each run. One set contained an alloy more dense than the bath alloy and one set a less dense alloy. This procedure was followed so that the effect of density difference on the measurement could be determined. After filling one set of capillaries, these were placed open end up in a capillary holder and transferred to the diffusion chamber which consisted of a Pyrex tube inserted into a graphite block. The second set of capillaries was then filled and placed into the diffusion chamber. The reservoir alloy, which had been melted in a separate crucible, then was poured carefully into the diffusion chamber. Sufficient reservoir alloy was used to cover all capillaries to a depth of several centimeters. All of these operations: capillary filling, melting of alloys, and diffusion anneal, were carried out in a fused-salt bath which maintained a temperature of 300"*1°C. IN recent years various problems in connection with research work on the preparation and properties of zinc-base alloys have required reliable information concerning the constitution of the zinc-rich portion of the iron-zinc equilibrium diagram. On numerous occasions rather positive indications were obtained that, for example, the solubility of iron in zinc was incorrectly represented on .the current equilibrium diagrams.. A careful study of all the available literature relating to the iron-zinc system led to the conclusion that much of the early work was unsatisfactory as measured by present standards of experimental accuracy, and as a result it was decided to redetermine the location of the liquidus curve and of adjacent portions of the diagram. Part I. of this paper comprises a description of the experimental methods and a summary of the results by means of which the zinc-rich end of the iron-zinc diagram has been revised in the following ways: 1. Measurements of the solubility of iron in liquid zinc by several different sampling methods, leading to a relocation of the liquidus curve. 2. Microscopic, conductivity, and X-ray studies of the solid solubility of iron in zinc, which, together with thermal analyses, have resulted in new values for the solid solubility and the eutectic temperature and composition. 3. Heating and cooling curves, obtained by a refined differential method, leading to new locations for the two peritectic horizontals. In Part II of the paper the attempt is made to review all of the published work having a bearing on the constitution of the iron-zinc system, and to correlate the present results, and some recently published data

A series of physical tests have been conducted to determine the actual performance of bunton to shaft side wall connections typically used in new shaft construction in South Africa. The test set-up is described, together with the applied loading, which incorporates a cyclical load component and a quasi-static load component, in an attempt to simulate actual conditions in the shaft. The test results are given and it is shown that generally the performance is adequate, provided double-slotted holes are not used. Generally the fatigue performance is found to be good, with the only exception being cases where the bottom of the bunton is lower than the seating level for the bunton to side wall connection. Arising from the tests, typical design values of connection stiffness, strength and fatigue life are proposed and a design procedure including these three key aspects of connections is described.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.
