The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.

The operational control in a Flash Smelting Furnace is based on the mass and energy balance of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the concentrates. It is well known that many troubles in the dust formation and slag quality occur without a clear correlation to a specific process parameter such as the matte grade or heat balance. This paper outlines two new considerations that could both help improve the entire quality of the process: blend characterization and versatile slag composition control. Related to the blend control, laboratory scale study has shown that the magnetite and dust formation don't have a linear behavior with the weight proportion of the blend and some optimal blends of2 or 3 types of concentrates can be identified. Related to the control of stag composition, the quantification of the slag liquidus temperatures and viscosity could be an effective operational tool for both for ferrite and fayalite slag that can also directly help deciding the blending parameters. From these viewpoints the benefits of the combination of these two approaches for high temperature operation is discussed. Mining executives often have a difficult task determining what the strategic objective of the business should be as this can be impacted by the prevailing market conditions. In addition, they have no mechanism to quantitatively 'test' the impact of this strategic decision on the business and understand the underlying dynamics. During the commodities bull run of 2003 to 2008 the strategic objective may have been to grow the long term value of the business (NPV) through increased tonnage, acquisition and finding new reserves, which all came with an increasing fixed cost base. Now with the financial crisis upon us and the collapse of commodity prices and demand, executives have adjusted their strategies as 'cash is king' and short-term cash flow, in some instances at the expense of long terms value, is the order of the day. For many mining companies, mine closures, reductions in production and cost cutting exercisers are now the focus. In many instances, management do not have an ability to rapidly test different strategic alternatives to 'test' the impact on value, unit costs, reserves and profitability at the operational level and optimize the underlying trade-off variables. Economic modelling of the complete business value chain is a means of linking the operational 'reality' and strategic choices, so that the full impact can be assessed. This paper describes some of the challenges facing mining executives and how economic modelling can be applied to make decision making more rigorous.

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters; presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimising the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck-haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m bench through marginal analysis. The observations from these analyses disprove the previous conflicting assertions that the overall weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases monotonically with bench height. It is concluded that: (i) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open-pit mines; (ii) the reduction of haulage cost is limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (iii) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high benches.

A unique electromagnetic pulse sounding system for the detection and identification of geological and man-made anomalies which represent hazards in hard rock rapid tunneling operations is described. The main features of the system including a periodic video-type pulse interrogating signal and a probe structure that permits operational modes which either "see" or are "blind" to homogeneous-type targets are reviewed. The results of experimental pulse measurements on targets buried in the overburden and in a limestone medium are presented. Since the electrical properties of limestone are not radically different from those of a hard rock medium, conclusions based on these data should be valid for a hard rock media also.

"The Lower Jurassic Iron Mask batholith intrudes Upper Triassic Nicola Group volcanic rocks in the Quesnellia terrane of southcentral British Columbia and hosts Cu-Au mineralization. The batholith comprises three mappable intrusive phases, including: Pothook gabbro to diorite, Cherry Creek monzodiorite to monzonite and Sugarloaf diorite. The Iron Mask hybrid forms a fourth mappable unit that makes up to 45% of the areal exposure in the batholith. It is highly variable in texture and composition and subdivided into three types; Type I and II have abundant (partially digested) xenoliths, many of which are derived from the Nicola Group, whereas Type III is xenolith-poor and shows extreme outcrop-scale textural diversity.Pothook and Cherry Creek rocks are similar in texture, mineralogy, whole rock and mineral composition and style of alteration. Contacts between the two can be intrusive or gradational. Rocks collected from these two suites have compositions that are permissive of a single magma batch, although simple crystal fractionation does not explain all chemical variations within and between the two suites. The Sugarloaf unit comprises a diverse group of amphibole-phyric rock types and is texturally and mineralogically distinct from Pothook and Cherry Creek suites.The Iron Mask hybrid represents progressive stages of physical and chemical interaction between Nicola Group country rocks and Pothook magma. Magmatic assimilation (selective or partial) is supparted on the basis of field relationships, petrographic observations, and REB compositional data. Thermal dehydration and partial assimilation of Nicola Group rocks by Pothook magma is shown to be a valid means of promoting early and extensive volatile saturation in the Iron Mask batholith."

Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. A laboratory study was conducted on the separation of Zn, Pb, Cu and Ag from a finely dissem-inated interlocked silver-rich multimetal sulphidc ore. These are often difficult to separate from each other by flotation. The thermodynamic calculations of Zn-S-O, Cu-S-O systems at different tem¬peratures were presented on predominance diagrams. Based on these diagrams the optimum temperature and gas composition were selected for roasting. The results of separating Zn, Cu from calcine by neutral leaching and acid leaching were found to be satisfactory. The distribution of silver in the roasting and leaching processes were tested. A flow sheet was proposed.

"Underground mining is subject to various natural hazards such as seismic events, rockbursts, fire, and gas (methane). In general, an increase in the extraction depth causes an increase in the likelihood of these hazards, especially seismic activity and rockbursts. Dynamic phenomena such as rockbursts and tremors have been recorded on six continents: Europe (Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovenia), Asia (India, and China), North and South America (USA, Canada, and Chile), Africa (South Africa), and Australia. To select appropriate mine working supports for such dynamic phenomena, the performance characteristics of such support types must be determined under both static and dynamic load conditions.This article presents information regarding the application of rockbolts in Polish underground hard-coal mines. Dynamic phenomena occurring in the mines from 2004–2013 are also characterized. A methodology developed at the Central Mining Institute (GIG) for the laboratory testing of rockbolts is presented. In this methodology, the bolts are loaded by the direct impact of a free-moving mass (up to 20 000 kg) at speeds of up to 1.2 m/s. The facilities at GIG used to test the support under static and dynamic load conditions are characterized, and the results of laboratory tests on yielding bolts with a nominal capacity of 420 kN are presented. These types of bolts are commonly used for reinforcing steel arches and the surrounding rock mass in Polish coal mines. These phenomena have been reported in such countries as Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Slovenia, Russia, India, China, the USA, Canada, Chile, South Africa, and Australia (Brauner, 1991; Potvin, Hudyma, and Jewell, 2000; Kidybin??ski, 2003; Driad-Lebeau et al., 2005; Li, Cai, and Cai, 2007; Whyatt and Loken, 2009; Durrheim and Riemer, 2012; Holub, Rušajova, and Holec?ko, 2011). Descriptions of the dynamic events and their effects in the form of damage to or destruction of supports have been presented in many publications, both for hardrock mines as well as for coal mines (Brauner, 1991; Dubin??ski and Konopko, 2000; Heal, 2010; Heal and Potvin, 2007; Simser, Joughin, and Ortlepp, 2002; Kaiser and Cai, 2012; Cai 2013; Nierobisz, 2013; Mark, 2014; Masny and Prusek, 2015). One of the main goals of the research has been to develop methods, criteria, and guidelines for the selection of an optimal and safe support for mine workings located in areas of rock bumps or tremors. Example of such studies include the Canadian Rockburst Support Handbook (Kaiser, McCreath, and Tannant, 1996), or the principles presented in the literature (Li, 2010; Cai, 2013)."

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The experience of mining coal and gas outburstprone coal seams shows that the degree of outburst danger in various coal seams and even at different parts of the same seam are quite different, and that to deal with them respectively in different ways will not noly be significant to safety but bring us remarkable economical profit, Based on the statistical data,including elght static and dynamic factors, gathered from coal and gas outburst spots at Nantong colliery in Chong Qing district of China, this paper has partitioned the degree of outburst danger of the No. 5 seam there by means of Fuzzy Clustering method. Because in the evaluation multiple indices have been considered, the result of partitioning is identical to practice and more efficient in applications.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficient operation of a tailings dewatering circuit comprising a thickener and filter press through proper control and automation. It is common to see thickeners and filter press circuits each with their own control systems. This can cause multiple issues when trying to increase efficiency and reliability of the tailings management process. By automating the thickener and filter press controls, you are eliminating any delays and inconsistencies caused by human error and process variations. When done properly the system can maintain a consistent product as the feed characteristics change. Previously, operators would have to monitor the process parameters and adjust the system accordingly. This can now be accomplished using state of the art process control equipment that continuously monitors and adjusts critical variables using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops. Anode effects are a phenomenon of the aluminium electrolysis process which produce potent greenhouse gases called PFCs (CF4, C2F6). With concerns surrounding global warming, and increasing regulation of GHG emissions, anode effects have become a significant sustainability issue for aluminium producers. In modem smelters, sophisticated computer control and automated alumina feeding systems allow for very tight control of the alumina concentration in the electrolyte and thus very low anode effect frequencies. Older smelters, however, do not have these systems and must either invest heavily to obtain them, or find other, innovative ways to reduce anode effect frequency. This paper will present the integrated approach to anode effect reduction used in the Vertical Stud Soderberg (VSS) potlines at Kitimat Works. Through an innovative combination of simplified signal analysis, modified alumina feed control logic, anode effect prediction, and anode effect prevention using a pager based communication system, Kitimat W arks has been able to make significant reductions to its anode effect frequency.

Acid drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of a permeable reactive multibarrier and a constructed wetland connected in a series. The multibarrier had a total volume of 23 m3 and consisted of an alkalizing limestone drain and an anoxic section for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, bio-sorption and additional chemical neutralization. The waters had a pH in the range of about 2.5 ~ 4.0 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the multibarrier varied in the range of about 1 ~ 17 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 300 ~ 18 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by the multibarrier during different climatic seasons, even during cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0oC. The multibarrier effluents were enriched in dissolved organic compounds and in some cases still contained manganese and iron in concentrations higher than the relevant permissible levels. These pollutants were removed in the constructed wetland as a result of the activity of different heterotrophic microorganisms, including some bacteria able to oxidize the bivalent manganese and iron ions to Mn4+ and Fe3+, respectively.
