"Electrical steels are used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. These properties are attributed to the presence of a significant amount of silicon in the steel composition. Silicon steels are mainly grouped into two categories: grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO). The Si content of silicon steels is generally between about 0.50% and 6.5%. Therefore, silicon steels are further classified as low-, medium-, and high- Si steels. In this paper, liquid steel processing practices for certain silicon steel grades are outlined by considering a steelmaking company that integrates a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), a ladle furnace (LF), and an RHtype degassing unit (RH). Possible problems are identified, suggestions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn on the basis of real plant data. IntroductionSilicon steels are widely used in motors, power generators, and transformers for electrical applications owing to their superior magnetic properties. They are mainly grouped into grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain-oriented (NGO) silicon steel grades. However, the differences in the properties and thermomechanical production of GO and NGO grades are outside the scope of this paper. In this study, liquid steel processing of certain silicon steels will be discussed. In the integrated iron and steelmaking process, converters are the primary steelmaking units that are used mainly for decarburization and removal of phosphorus, and for obtaining liquid steel with a specific chemical composition and suitable temperature for secondary steelmaking operations. Ladle furnaces are a type of ladle metallurgy station consisting of electrical and/or chemical heating facilities for adjusting the liquid steel temperature during alloying. Various types of vacuum units are used for decarburization and removal of nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulphur, depending on the metallurgical conditions of the vacuum units. In this study, an actual steel-production company is considered in which the primary steelmaking operation uses a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter with N2/Ar bottom blowing, and the secondary steelmaking operations involve (1) a ladle furnace (LF) heated by three graphite electrodes and equipped with Ar and N2 top/bottom mixing facilities, and (2) an RHtype (circulation) vacuum degassing unit equipped with a top-blowing attachment for oxygen blowing and an Ar-purging system from an up-leg snorkel."

DISLOCATION damping in single crystals is orientation dependent.&apos; If dislocations are distributed uniformly over all the slip systems in a crystal, and if each dislocation contributes identically to the damping process, then a damping loss or decrement 6 arises. In fact, however, for a crystal of axial direction (hkl), dislocations on certain slip systems are oriented to make a larger contribution to the damping loss than are dislocations on other slip systems. Thus the measuring damping, 6 (hkl) is proportional to an orientation factor (hkl), which weights the ability of each slip system in the crystal to contribute to the total damping. If it is assumed that dislocations are distributed uniformly on all slip systems, then for a given orientation of an fcc crystal this factor is determined2,3 by the three nonzero elastic constants Cll, C12, and C44 and the density p. In this communication measured values of elastic constants for two Fe-18Cr-Ni alloys are reported, and the dislocation damping results on two different orientations of each alloy are analyzed for orientation dependence. Elastic constants were determined by measuring the ultrasonic velocities of one longitudinal and two shear waves in (110) direction of the fcc crystals.4 Variation of velocities with the change in orientation is very small for (110) orientation,3 and so this direction is ideal for orientation factor and comparative damping measurements. Experimental Procedures. The nominal compositions of the alloys studied are given in Table I. These alloys were vacuum-melted and vacuum-cast from high-purity materials at U.S. Steel Applied Research Laboratories. The single crystals were grown by the modified Bridgeman technique. The specimens were homogenized at 1350°C for 20 hr, cut to shape and size with a spark cutter, and then annealed at 1100°C for 20 hr prior to use. In the KHz frequency range, the Marx composite piezoelectric oscillator was used to obtain the damping. The ultrasonic pulse technique was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities and the attenuation in the MHz frequency range. Table I gives the values of the ultrasonic velocities. Values of C11, C12, and C44 calculated from these velocities are also given in Table I, and it is evident that there is very little variation in C11, C12, and C44 with nickel content. This slight variation may be attributed to inaccuracies in velocity measurements and practical differences in the orientations of the specimens. For example, in B the time interval for vl was 2.4 ± 0.05 sec giving an error in v1 of 0.235 x or 0.005 in. per sec. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and cuts in the various reining districts of the United States. The mining methods described are those used in the mines of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co., a Mexico corporation whose holding company in the United States is the Greene Cananea Copper Co. The mines are at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, 25 miles directly south of the international boundary, approximately in 31° nor to latitude and 110 to 130° west longitude. Cananea is connected with the boundary towns of Naco and Nogales, Ariz., by a standard-gage railroad.

THIS paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.[+] Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Barberton constitutes the world&apos;s deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 20-40 ft. Fractured. sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), 3/8 by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets, 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. THE SHAFT-SINKING OPERATION The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. The head-frame, while ordinary, featured: (I) a storage pocket of 300 cu. ft. capacity with truck servicing facilities, and (2) pneumatically operated dump doors, which were actuated by the hoistman, thus caring for the dumping of the "ball-and-chain"

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

WHEN mining development began in the Kirkland Lake camp, twenty-five years ago, there was very little information obtainable from surface showings as to the nature of the ore deposits. A length of almost a mile of the main &apos;break&apos; lay under the south arm of the lake, and elsewhere most of the outcrops were covered with glacial drift. Shafts were sunk on ore-bodies of uncertain value, either on the outcrop of the veins or-because of the lake to the north-in the south or hanging-wall. In the second year of the camp&apos;s development, the Great War broke out and retarded progress for its duration. He would have been a real optimist who, in those early years, could have foreseen mining at depths of more than a mile.

On the basis of limited experimental work conducted at the Port Pirie smelter, it would appear that, by increasing the specific surface of sinter, and possibly that of coke as well, a marked increase in the rate and degree of sinter reduction in the furnace shaft can be achieved. Fusion-point tests have shown that this increased reduction means a much higher sinter fusion point and narrower plastic zone, while the more efficient utilization of coke in the furnace is inherent in the intensification of reduction by the provision of a more reactive sinter surface. Investigations aimed at increasing the ability to operate the blast furnace with a higher lead tenor of sinter reducing fuel cost proportionately, and at eliminating the loss in reduction potential in coke entering the furnace, as shown by the presence of appreciable proportions of CO in the top gases, are reported. Several lines for future investigations that could result in improved smelting methods are proposed. A SOMEWHAT informal presentation of ideas on lead blast-furnace smelting will be given in this paper. These ideas have been developed during observations of furnace behavior at Port Pirie and earlier at Mt. Isa, and have been guided by the results of laboratory experiments at Port Pirie. The authors do not intend to propound any particularly new theories, but present their ideas as a basis for discussion which may help toward a better understanding and improved control of blast-furnace operation. Performance variations of considerable magnitude occur from time to time at most lead blast-furnace plants. While Port Pirie is fortunate in having a very regular supply of high grade concentrates, it is no exception in this respect. Such irregularities are of considerable economic importance and they constitute a challenge to present-day metallurgists in their efforts to obtain an ever greater degree of control over furnace operation. In operating as Port Pirie does with a relatively high lead charge, it has been recognized for a long time that shaft conditions are ,of the greatest importance. A practical, or engineering, attack on the problem of accretions consisted of changes in furnace design, e.g., by widening the shaft to 10 ft above the bottom row of tuyeres, and by the provision of curved ends and vertical walls.&apos; That this attack has had a great measure of success is shown by the fact that barring down of these wide furnaces is rarely necessary, shaft conditions have greatly improved, and sensitivity to charge variations has been markedly reduced. These modifications, followed by some metallurgical changes (chiefly the incorporation of pig iron into the furnace charge in 1948), have brought furnace operation to a point where some variables which were previously masked can now be studied. Accordingly, over different periods of time during the last five years, such variables as could be given numerical values have been recorded and subjected to statistical examination. The objectives of this work were: 1—to reveal the true importance of the different variables and 2—to show the proportion of total furnace variation which is unexplained and therefore referable to causes not measured at present? e.g., shaft accretions, sinter structure, coke structure, and others. Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. There have been numerous recorded cases of mine explosions being initiated by falls of roof. The actual mechanism of the ignition has often been unknown. One possibility is incendive frictional sparking, particularly when the falling rock contains quartz. Another possibility that has received little attention is the increase in temperature of the air due to adiabatic compression under the falling roof. This paper analyses that possibility and concludes that falls which are extensive in plan area but not necessarily of great thickness of falling rock can, indeed, produce temperatures in excess of those required for the ignition of coal dust or methane.

Many differences can be imagined between gas-oil flow in which the gas is supplied at the face of the core and gas-oil flow in which the flowing gas was originally dissolved in the oil. If capillary pressure characteristics and flow requirements control gas saturation distribution, the gas would be expected to be located at preferred sites within the porous medium as determined by pore sizes. On the other hand, during solution gas drive the gas first appears as bubbles through a nuclea-tion process. Nothing in self-nucleation theory specifies at which sites the first bubbles should be formed. In all probability they will be randomly distributed throughout the porous medium. Furthermore, it is not at all certain that even at low rates of production the gas will redistribute itself after nucleation to the channels normally occupied by gas in simple gas flow. Stewart, et at, have shown that at least for some limestone samples, oil recoveries could not be predicted for all rates of production using any one set of relative gas and oil permeabilities. An important factor in controlling recoveries during solution gas drive was the rate of bubble formation, higher rates giving higher recoveries. Stewart, et al, attributed the increase in recovery to a better distribution of the gas phase in heterogeneous limestone samples than is obtained by simple external gas drive. Differences in recovery from these causes were not reported for sandstone cores. In the experiments to be reported here, oil recovery, pressure and producing GOR history were measured during solution gas drive for a 5-ft sandstone core. The results were compared with predictions from the Muskat method for computing solution gas-drive behavior using external gas-drive relative permeability. The effects of changing the rate of production and oil viscosity were studied. At high laboratory rates of average pressure decline, two observations were made which would not have been predicted by Muskat&apos;s depletion theory: (1) oil recovery increased with increasing rate of production for a given viscosity oil, and (2) oil recovery increased with increasing oil viscosity for a given high rate of production. Both of these observations are explained as consequences of diffusion control of gas saturations superimposed on the normal gas-oil flow requirements, Fur- thermore, discontinuous gas phase flow appears to be significant during solution gas drive. The laboratory tests were performed at rates of average pressure decline many times greater than the maximum possible rate of average pressure decline in an actual oil field. It is, therefore, not possible to draw any direct conclusions regarding the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism under actual field conditions. However, at the lower laboratory rates, recoveries were nearly independent of rate and could be predicted by the Muskat method, using external gas-drive relative permeability data. These results suggest that at normal oilfield rates the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism is negligible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The core material for the pressure depletion studies was Bandera sandstone from an outcrop in the Mid-Continent. This sandstone was selected because of its low permeability (about 10 md), which would permit the development of substantial pressure gradients in the corn at moderate flow rates. The core was 5-ft long and 2-in. in diameter. Its properties are listed in Table 1. Relative gas-to-oil permeability ratios were measured by an external gas-drive method2. The results are shown for a short 2-in. core and for the 5-ft core in Fig. 8. Oils used in the pressure depletion experiments were kerosene and a highly refined white oil (standard white oil No. 3) with gas-free viscosities of 1.8 and 25 cp, respectively. The gas was a naturally occurring methane from Gough field, Inglewood, Calif. The oil viscosities, gas solubilities and formation volume factors are plotted as functions of pressure at 75°F in Figs. 1 and 2. Methane viscosities and compressibilities were obtained from the literature"&apos;. A core mounting was required which could withstand up to 2,500 psi internal pressure. The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

Cominco Ltd&apos;s Polaris Mine in Canada&apos;s High Arctic has been successfully mining zinc ore in permafrost since 1981. Mining methods using frozen backfill have been the key to success. The mine is now producing about 60 per cent of the ore from pillars while maintaining high productivities. Annual ore production is just over one million tonnes providing more than 200 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate each year. Cominco Ltd has adapted management and operating practices to suit the harsh environment and the isolated site, and has shown that a profitable development can be carried out in the tough Arctic conditions, with minimum impact on the environment.

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company&apos;s participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920&apos;s, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah&apos;s strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday&apos;s horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today&apos;s- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today&apos;s 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today&apos;s advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

Thermochemical equilibria of the heterogeneous system Ti-N-H-CI-Fe-Cr-Mo-Ni-Mn-C were calculated by using a commercial software based on the minimization of the free energy. Equilibrium calculations were done for temperatures varying between 800" and l 100°C and an initial molar relationship between reactants, a=NJTiCI,, of 0.1 to 2. The deposition process was considered to occur at atmospheric pressure. The activities of the alloying elements of the stainless steel were considered equal to their molar fractions. It was shown that for the conditions studied the substrate is no inert with respect to the gaseous phase. The existence of liquid chlorides was predicted for temperatures between 800" and 850°C and a ratio between 0.3 and 0.9. The most important metallic chlorides which appears to be present from the calculations in appreciable quantities in the gaseous phase are iron dichloride and manganese dichloride. In the low-temperatures zone and for low initial nitrogen contents, it result that the appearance of the liquid chlorides seems that partially inhibits the production of gaseous HCI. The highest deposition process efficiency calculated is obtained at a temperature 2 900°C and a N2/TiCI, ratios 2 0.7.
