The Mount Lyell Company treats some 2.3 million tonnes of ore annually, mined from a number of orebodies on the field. Blended ore is essentially a quartz-sericite schist containing about eight per cent of pyrite and three per cent of chalcopyrite. Four-stage crushing and two-stage ball milling are followe by selective flotation for copper. Pyrite is recovered from the coarse fraction of dopper circuit tailings. A detailed survey involving examination. of 82 samples provided information on the size- by-size behaviour of the principal ore constituents throughout the grinding, copper flotation and pyrite flotation sections of the circuit. Results for the copper and pyrite flotation sections are presented in the paper, and it is shown that over half the copper reporting to the final tailing (5% of copper in the feed) is plus 100 microns and that the major pyrite loss is in the desliming cyclone overflow. These data proVide a basis for assessing potential methods of circuit optimisation.

ITEC Environmental Colorado has begun reprocessing the tailings from old mining sites near Boulder, CO. And if the technology behind ITEC's pilot project at Gold Hill proves successful and profitable, the company plans to launch similar reprocessing operations in other parts of the state. The pilot project is under the watchful eye of state and federal authorities. They hope the technology becomes the answer to cleaning up old mining sites throughout the West. Remining and environmental cleanup on an economic basis, then, are ITEC's hopes in one the most environmentally conscious counties in the state. Clean up the mine dump sites and recycle the land, for a profit. In June 1998, ITEC Mineral Inc., ITEC Environmental Colorado's Canadian parent, acquired the Gold [ ] Hill Mill facility in Boulder County. Included in the acquisition was 4.4 hm2 (11 acres) containing the Gold Hill Mill and 283 hm2 (700 acres) of additional properties adjacent to the facility. ITEC estimates that there are about 910 kt (1 million st) of dump rock in the area. That is enough to make the operation viable. ITEC will sell the metals recovered through its reprocessing operations. However, due to low metals prices, ITEC is not expecting to make much money on the recovery of precious and base metals. Instead, the company plans to resell the reclaimed land for residential and commercial development or open space. The Gold Hill Mill site is the first of 17 sites in Colorado that ITEC Mineral hopes to clean up and recycle the land. Most notable among the sites is the historic Central City/Black Hawk mining district, which ITEC believes holds considerable potential. The Gold Hill Mill is located 14 km (9 miles) west of the city of Boulder and less than a half mile from the small town of Gold Hill. The mill was. last operated in 1992. The operation was forced to close that year due to environmental and cash flow problems. Gold Hill is in the middle of a region with more than 32 Mt (35 million st) of mine tailings. Independent geologists have' established the average grade of the Gold Hill mine tailings to be 4.5 to 5.3 g/t (0.13 to 0.155 oz/st) of gold and 28 to 44 g/t (0.83 to 1.29 oz/st) of silver. According to these studies, the Gold Hill mine tailings are five times richer in precious metals than the tailings of the Norebec Manitou property in Canada that ITEC is also remining, reclaiming and restoring. Upon acquiring the mill, ITEC undertook a refurbishing program that included adding a second ball mill. This increased the Gold Hill Mill's capacity to 180 t/d (200 stpd). The operation employs 15 people. "The Gold Hill Mill site will demonstrate the efficiency of our integrated remining, reclaiming and restoration process," said Maxine Stewart, president of Denver, CO -based ITEC Environmental. "The abundance of similar mine sites in Colorado presents a number of opportunities to bring the benefits of the ITEC system to other communities around the state." Holly Huyck is technical advisor to the Clear Creek Watershed Advisory Group. She said: "ITEC is cleaning up an orphan mine site that otherwise would continue to contaminate the Boulder Creek watershed with acid and excess metals. This is a win-win situation: ITEC gains marketable minerals while it reclaims mined land and helps to improve the watershed."

Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world's annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world's largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

"The study described in this paper, on the reactions in an iron blast furnace, is part of the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on combustion of coke and the reduction of iron oxides in the blast furnace. Previous study of the combustion zone of the iron blast furnace, by means of a series of as samples taken through the tuyeres across the hearths of 13 blast furnaces, showed that the combustion of the coke in the blast-furnace hearth is complete at a distance of 32 to 40 inches from the nose of the tuyere, measured horizontally toward the center of the furnace. The results of this previous work are sum¬marized in the curves shown in figure 1, where it will be noted that practically all of the oxygen disappears at a distance of approximately 30 inches from the nose of the tuyere.In order to determine the height at which oxygen is found in a vertical direction above the tuyeres - it had been suggested that the combustion zone turned upward near the tuyere and to obtain comparisons with the samples taken at the Bureau of Mines experimental6 (5-ton) blast-furnace at Minneapolis, the Bureau extended the gas sampling on a commercial furnace to a number of planes between the tuyere level and the stock line. The sampling was conducted on a 300-ton furnace, making foundry iron, operated by the Central Iron and Coal Co., at Holt, Ala. The furnace was smelting Southern red and brown ores and nodules from pyrite sinter. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the furnace showing the six planes sampled."

This paper deals with the analysis of pillar failure in a room and pillar mining operation of a deep underground coal mine. The incident here involved the failure of more than 100 pillars. The mechanism of pillar failure (bump/squeeze) has been studied in detail. The analysis consists of inmine eyewitness observations, laboratory experiments and analytical study of the pillar failure area using finite element technique. Results indicated that the mechanical properties of coal, roof and floor, geologic condition, and the method of operation have affected the mode of pillar failure. Hard roof and floor prevented roof caving and floor heaving in the gob area creating an inhomgeneous stress field on the pillar. This condition developed a yield zone and a core zone in the pillar. Progressive increase of vertical stress further increased the yield zone of the pillar and reduced the core pillar leading to a total squeeze of the pillar. However, the analysis indicated that the pillars were liable to bump provided any sudden shift of load occurred on the core pillar due to some dynamic shock imparted by a local failure of the immediate roof (slickenslided area) or during splitting.

Many direct processes have been proposed for the treatment of oxidized ores of copper by reducing the copper oxide to the metallic state, and by separating it from its impurities by a subsequent fusion. The radical objection common to all the methods which have come to my notice, except those in which sulphur plays the prominent part, is that the very deoxidizing agent which effects the reduction of the copper oxide, inevitably reduces at the same time a very considerable part, if not the whole, of the iron which almost invariably accompanies copper in its ores. The result is that, when the ore is subsequently fused, a very great quantity of the already reduced iron separates from the slag along with the copper, alloying with it, and necessitating costly subsequent operations for its separation. Thus, at Perm, in the Urals," the product of the fusion of ferrnginous copper oxides is a mixture of one hundred and fifty-tive parts of highly cupriferous pig iron with two hundred and fire parts of very impure and ferruginous black copper, containing Pome 10 per cent. of' carbon and iron, though free from sulphur, and of course very difficult to refine. If, in order to avoid this reduction of iron to the metallic state, the reducing action be made feebler, it inevitably results that a considerable part of the copper as well escapes deoxidation; and, consequently, the slags are so rich that it becomes necessary to treat them subsequently in order to recover the copper which they contain. Thus,. in treating native copper, at Lake Superior, where the reducing action is purposely made feeble in order to prevent the deoxidation of the iron, the slags from the first fusion of the ore carry so much copper as to render it imperative to treat them again, which is done in a cupola. And yet, in spite of so far weakening the reducing action as to cause a notable slagging of the copper, a very considerable reduction of iron actually takes place. These are the two dangers which threaten the smelter of oxidized copper ores. If he wishes to avoid slagging his copper, he must have so strong a deoxidizing action as to reduce a great deal of his

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a seven-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Company in southeast Utah. The support system allow good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered, Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths.

"The basal type uranium deposits in south central British Columbia occur within unconsolidated, late Miocene fluvial paleochannel sediments that overlie major fault zones within the Okanagan Highlands Intrusive Complex. Prior to the formation of mineralization, paleovalleys containing host sediments were flooded by Pliocene valley basalts of the Plateau Basalt Formation. Five uranium deposits have been outlined to date, of which the Blizzard (4020 tonnes U) and TYee (650 tonnes U) are the largest. The basement intrusive complex underlying the deposits varies in age from early Cretaceous to Eocene and is comprised of quartz monzonite, granodiorite, Coryell monzonite, porphyritic granite and pegmatite.The mineralized host sediments comprise a complex sequence of interfingering conglomerates, arkosic sandstones and mudstones. Organic material is abundant in many, but not all, mineralized beds. Uranium mineralization is present in the form of uranous (ningyoite) or uranyl (saleeite, autunite) phosphates coating clastic grains and filling voids. Because of very strong reducing conditions related to large concentrations of marcasite and organic material, ningyoite is the only uranium mineral in the Tyee deposit, whereas the Blizzard deposit contains a more complex assemblage of minerals (saleeite, autunite, ningyoite). The observed paragenetic sequence of mineral precipitation in the Blizzard deposit (autunite-saleeite-ningyoite) indicates that the uranyl minerals, saleeite and autunite, are primary. Small amounts of Zn, Ni, Co and Mo have been introduced into the Blizzard deposit whereas Mo is the only non ore-forming element enriched in the Tyee deposit. Mn is the only depleted element in both deposits."

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

Worldwide, hard coal mining is being carried out at ever increasing depth, and has, therefore, to cope with correspondingly increasing methane emissions. About seven per cent of global methane emissions are caused by coal mining. Beside carbon dioxide, chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides, methane is one of the most significant `greenhouse' gases. It is mainly through the release of such trace gases that the greenhouse effect is brought about. Reducing methane emissions is therefore an important problem to be solved by the coal mining industry. This paper begins by highlighting some of the fundamental principles of methane in hard coal mining. The methane problem in German hard coal mining and the industry's efforts to reduce methane emissions are presented. The future development in German hard coal mining is illustrated by an example which shows how large methane volumes can be managed, while still maintaining high outputs at increasing depth.

Generally speaking, erosion, as a process which entails degradation of surface layers of earth under the influence of the mechanical energy of surface waters, and from the point of view of biosphere sustainability, is a harmful process. This is absolutely true when agricultural and forest areas are concerned. However, if erosion is viewed selectively, this general definition about its harm raises serious questions. In other words, the erosion which takes place in the terrains where there is no vegetation because of the geological composition of the soil, does no harm. On the contrary, if the mineralogical composition of such terrains is characterized by a presence of precious and rare metals, erosion can be very useful. It contributes to the creation of new alluvial deposits of these metals in the waters in the plain land. It is here that torrents from hills come down and cause erosion. And finally, if there were no erosion, there would be no renewable deposits of gravel and sand.

Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

The diffusion rate in Cu-Te couples is very sensitive to compressive stress, with a load of 20 psi making a significant difference to the width of the diffusion zone. At zero stress, two phases appear in the diffusion zone (Cu4Te3 and CuTe). Under compressive loading the third stable phase (Cuz Te) also appears, and its thickness increases progressively with increasing stress. The results are explained on the basis of an incipient Kirkendall porosity which restricts the transfer of atoms from the copper into the diffusion zone. DURING a study of the Kirkendall effect in Cu-Te couples prepared by clamping together the two components, it was found that the diffusion-zone width and shape in the plane of contact were not reproducible. Although the stresses involved in clamping are not normally sufficiently high to affect diffusion rates, preliminary tests established that the Cu-Te system is particularly stress-sensitive. The phase diagram for the system Cu-Te given in Hanssen1 shows that there is practically no solid solubility at either end of the phase diagram. Many areas of the diagram are not fully substantiated, but there appear to be three intermediate phases: Cu,Te—hexagonal in structure, having a grey luster; Cu4Te3—a tetragonal defect structure, having a red-purple luster; CuTe—orthorhombic in structure and having a golden-green luster. The existence of a fourth phase, the X phase at 37 at. pct Te, is considered doubtful. The composition ranges of the three stable phases are small, and are not accurately known. The phase diagram changes little with temperature up to 305°C, at which temperature a polymorphic transformation takes place in Cu2Te. The nature of the Cu-Te phase diagram indicates that the diffusion zone in a Cu-Te couple would consist of a series of layers of intermediate phases. The relative thickness of any one phase will depend on its diffusion coefficient and composition range.' In this type of diffusion couple it is often found experimentally that some phases are not visible at all in the diffusion zone due either to a small diffusion coefficient or to a restricted composition range.3 Since the composition ranges of the phases in Cu-Te are not known, it is not possible to determine diffusion coefficients in this system from a knowledge of the phase thicknesses. Several investigations have been carried out to determine the effect of compressive stress on diffusion rates in multiphase systems. Diffusion couples of Ni-A1 have been investigated by Storchheim et al.4 and by Castleman and Seigle.5 Two phases (ß and ?) appear in the diffusion zone under zero stress and the thickness of both phases is progressively reduced with increasing stress. According to Storchheim et al.4 a stress of 25,000 psi reduces the thickness of the diffusion zone by 50 pct. In a-brass—?-brass couples the thickness of the 0 phase formed in the diffusion zone was reduced by 20 pct at a stress of 20,000 psi.6 In other investigations the compressive load has been observed to increase the width of the diffusion zone. In A1-U, several investigators3,8 have found the width of the whase UA13 to increase with stress. According to casileman,8 the rate of formation of UA13 at 520°C is 75 pct faster at a stress of 20,000 psi as compared with a stress of 2500 psi. In Cu-Sb the effect of stress is greater than in the other systems described. According to Heumann9,10 only one phase (y) appears in the diffusion zone at a stress of 500 psi, but at a stress of 850 psi two phases (y and k) are present. If a diffusion couple containing both y and k phases is annealed at a low stress level, the y phase grows at the expense of the k phase. EXPERIMENTAL The diffusion couples were prepared from electrolytic copper bar stock with a nominal purity of 99.92 pct and from tellurium of 99.7 pct purity. The tellurium proved difficult to machine because of its brittleness and a technique was developed for casting the tellurium into a graphite slab mold and spark-machining specimens from this slab. Both the copper and tellurium were produced in the form of discs 2 in. diam by approximately 1/4 in. thick with surfaces ground flat to 3/0 emery paper. The diffusion apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Auni-axial compressive stress was applied to the system through a simple lever system. A stainless-steel rod actuated by the lever arm lay inside a stainless-steel tube. The diffusion couple lay on top of the steel rod, and pressure was applied to the couple between the rod and a plug welded into the center of the tube. To ensure a uniform stress across the couple, a hemispherical boss and cup were used to transmit the load to the diffusion couple. A 400-w tube furnace with a uniform hot zone 3 in. long slid around the stainless-steel tube and maintained the assembly at temperature. A thermocouple situated 3 in. from the specimen operated a proportional temperature controller which maintained the specimen temperature constant to ±2°C. Most diffusion runs were carried out at 250C although a few tests were made at other temperatures in the range 235° to 300°C. The specimens were inserted and removed with the furnace at operating temperature, and took only 2 min to reach diffusion temperature—a time small compared with the total diffusion time. INTRODUCTION Behavior of clay soils in response to tunneling is reasonably well understood by reference to the tunnel stability factor NT = Pz/su (Peck, 1969; Heuer, 1974). With this analysis tool, care must be taken to use a value of clay shear strength which represents the actual mass strength, considering such factors as slickensided fissures often found in stiff and hard clays. Behavior of clean sand and gravel soils is also reasonably well understood. Above the water table these soils must be assumed to act as running ground unless they are known to have significant cementation or have a very dense and angular interlocked grain structure. Below the water table they must be tunneled using some form of groundwater control such as dewatering, grouting, freezing, or internal fluid pressure in the tunnel such as compressed air or a slurry tunneling machine. The internal fluid pressure must approximately balance the external water head. Without such precautions these soils behave as flowing ground and may yield large volumes of water flow into the tunnel. A wide range of very fine sand, silty sand, cohesionless silt, and clayey sand soils exist in nature in a variety of geologic environments. The behavior of these soils in response to tunneling, and guidelines for anticipating their behavior, are not well described in the literature. Because of their content of fine particles, these materials may behave as if they initially have appreciable cohesion and moderate to low permeability. They may exhibit significant standup time, and require tunnel internal fluid pressure (compressed air or slurry pressure) less than the full external water head. It is important to be able to estimate the behavior of these soils when planning construction methods. The utilization of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in conjunction with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a powerful surface characterization technique to study the role of sulfur formation during acidic oxidation of chalcopyrite. It has been established that the chalcopyrite dissolution kinetics is controlled by the formation of passive sulfur layer during leaching. The objective of the study was to characterize the intermediate sulfur layer formation at different oxidation conditions in acidic solution. The chalcopyrite samples were subjected to anodic oxidation and the oxidation process was analyzed using impedance spectroscopy. The sulfur growth on the chalcopyrite surface during oxidation was further analyzed using Atomic Force Microscope for sulfur roughness and grain size, peak height and sulfur growth.

This paper details successful implementation of a revolutionary pit access system involving excavation of an 'in-the-wall' ramp at Three Mile Hill open pit operated by Gold Mines of Coolgardie, formerly Goldfan Limited, at Coolgardie, Western Australia. Three Mile Hill is a medium-size, open pit, gold operation typified by hard, competent, fresh rock conditions from near surface. The project involved construction of a haulage tunnel or decline access located in the wall of an open pit in place of a conventional pit access ramp. Works undertaken as discussed herein included excavation, support, ventilation, dewatering, services installation, commissioning and monitoring. Prior to implementation, the conventional hardrock pit slopes and designs were constrained by the presence of infrastructure and a main road to the North and by adjoining leases to the Southeast. The combination of these factors and economic considerations resulted in a decision to proceed with an innovative in-the-wall ramp access system that is believed to be the first of its type in Australia. Back-analysis indicates that implementation resulted in a cost saving of as much as A$3.6 million and increased mineable pit reserves. The paper deals with the successful implementation and operation of the in-the-wall ramp haulage as well as an economic evaluation that is aimed at drawing some general conclusions on favourable conditions for implementation in other mining scenarios.
