[This paper is one of series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes the mine of the Hanover Bessemer Iron & Copper Co. at Fierro, Grant County, N. M., which is the only operating iron mine in the southwestern part of the United States. This mine is in a district noted for the great variety of ores that it produces. Within a small area, as shown is Figure 1, there are noteworthy deposits of nearly all the common metals. The ore occurs in lenticular masses dipping at about 50°. An underhand stoping method has been developed that requires but a very small amount of handling of ore. As the ore is very irregular in iron content and also in the distribution of the impurities--chiefly sulphur, silica, and magnesia--a method has to be used that will permit selective mining and will also allow ore and waste to be taken out separately as conditions change. A magnetic cobbing plant raises the grade of the ore shipped about 10 per cent.]

"This paper is devoted to scrutiny problem of obtaining electro-contacts by electro-discharge sintering technology. A new unconventional method of electro contacts production (on Aggraphite base) can yield essential optimization resource.Review of three electro-technological methods of processing contacts materials is presented:- using graphite powder cladded by Ag;- mixture of graphite powder(which is a non-cladded powder) with Ag powder and addition of Fe powder particles;- method of infiltration of melted Ag into graphite piece without deformation and rupture of object.This technological approach can give the possibility to increase of compression strength of electro-contacts materials up to 340 MPa and more under conditions of additional reinforcing components (for example, by Fe).IntroductionThe electric current can be an active ""participator"" of the powder metallurgy technology [l]. At the passage of electric current through powders or some powder mixtures the phenomena including phase transformations arise. Here such effects, which are observed in the Ag-graphite and Ag-Fe-graphite powder mixtures and in the pair Ag-porous graphite, are described.The Ag-graphite composition materials (CM) are used, for example, as electric contacts [2, 3]. Since a material being produced is destined for the contacts it is necessary to take into account the following aspects: commutating current, its character and voltage, active or reactive character of working load, geometrical dimensions of contacts, quantity and frequency of switching on and switching off, pressure on contacts, distance between contacts, method of arc control, surrounding medium, its content, pressure and temperature. Thus, these and, maybe, choice of some other circumstances influence design, materials and production technology of contacts. The range of problems concerned dictates such steps as alloying of contact materials, optimization of structure, selection of kind of graphite, its connection with metal [4-10]. It is expedient to recall the main procedures of the first stage of the conventional technology: dosage of the initial graphite powder and binder-phenolic resin plastic varnish (for example, Bakelite), mixing, densification, thermal treatment, crushing, grinding, sieving, drying, dosage of grained graphite, dosage of the initial silver powder, obtaining of the silver salt solution, settling of salt, filtration, washing, drying of the cladded graphite powder, thermal treatment, obtaining of the graphite powder of particles cladded by silver. The second stage of the convectional technology starts by obtaining of the cladded graphite powder and finishes by annealing of the pressed blanks (Fig. 1)."

There remains considerable controversy in the industry regarding precision type detonators and where the end user can benefit from their use. In spite of the fact that electronic detonators and other prototypes were tested over one decade ago, explosive suppliers have hedged on full scale production for many reasons. Although some of the reasons were based on solid economics, others were strongly influenced by shear internal resistance within the corporate objectives, ultimate fear of market rejection, indecision as to what degree of precision was required and limited data on defining the real benefits to the end user.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

Small-scale laboratory mineral-dressing studies were made on a total of nine individual or composite samples of manganese-bearing material from the west-central Arkansas, or Mena, district. Of these, only three yielded concentrates that would probably be acceptable for purchases by the Federal Government fur the National Stockpile. Concentrates from some of the other properties, however, contained more than 40 percent Mn and might be merchantable to other purchasers of manganese ore. In most instances, a too-intimate association of manganese oxides and gangue is conducive to low grade, low recovery, or both, so that mechanical concentration processes do not promise much for this district.

Laboratory studies have indicated that the crystallization and desensitization of microballoon sensitized emulsion explosives start immediately after shocking or pre-compression. However, the question of whether or not the shocked emulsion could be worsened by the growth of crystallization or recovered by rebounding back to lower densities has been rarely examined under actual rock blasting conditions. This study was primarily intended to investigate the desensitization characteristics of two commonly used emulsion products in terms of blasthole spacing and delay duration. In the experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.

Integrated forms of two solutions of Fick's second law for the movement of a plane interface through a sample of wustite, and for diffusion into a semi-infinite slab of wustite, are shown to yield nearly identical values of the chemical diffusion coeffcients of cation vacancies in wustite, over the temperature range 900° to 1100°C. The chemical diffusion coefficients, the values of D obtained for the propagation of a concentration gradient through samples of undoped and doped wustite, are obtained from the equations It is becoming increasingly important in metallurgical practices to understand the role of the chemical diffusion coefficient, i.e., the diffusion coefficient of a species across a concentration gradient. The development of reliable and accurate solution sampling systems plus on-line atomic absorption spectrophotometers and voltammetric analysers at Pasminco Metals - EZ's (PMEZ) zinc refinery at Hobart, Tasmania, has led to extensive implementation of On-Stream Analysis (OSA) throughout the hydrometallurgical circuit. These systems complement industrial autotitrator and colorimetric analysers and with the comprehensive use of a powerful integrated Distributed Control System (DCS), provide extensive monitoring and control of all the important in solution' parameters for the plant. Samples can be left unaltered, or filtered or settled, to remove solids. They are then precision diluted and pneumatically transported to analyser shelters, where they are analysed for zinc, acid, copper, cadmium, lead, antimony, cobalt, nickel, mercury and ferrous, ferric and/or total iron. The range of analyses depends on the sample itself. The results are used for feed forward and/or feedback control of reagents where possible, or simple trend monitoring and out-of-specification alarming when closed loop control is not practical. The overall system reliability and accuracy is such that many daily composite plant samples are no longer analysed off-line. Operator sampling has also been reduced, and in two places, autotitrators with automatic sample pre-treatment have been installed for preparing and analysing samples collected by operators.

The excavation damage zone (EDZ) caused by drill and blast excavation consists of intense damage adjacent to the remaining half barrel of the blast hole, new fracturing induced by the blast and reactivation of pre-existing fractures. The properties of intense microfracturing adjacent to the half barrels of remaining blast holes are based on study of rock samples from ZEDEX-tunnel and it’s extension at Äspö and the Research tunnel at Olkiluoto in Finland. The new and reactivated fracturing is based on results of mapping of slots cut in the rock in ZEDEX-project. The zone of increased porosity adjacent to half barrels, which penetrates to a depth of some centimeters was studied by using novel 14C-PMMA method. The penetration of the radial fractures, which is an order of magnitude deeper, was studied by mapping using color penetrant. Results of EDZ studies carried out at Äspö HRL in Sweden and in Research Tunnel at Olkiluoto show that the properties of EDZ can be affected significantly by engineering design. The result imply that the additional pore volume caused by distinct fracturing around the blast holes caused by state-of-the-art smooth blasting technique could be of the same order as that of the damaged zone adjacent to the surface of the half barrels. Die Eigenschaften einer immensen, an die Halbrohre der Restbohrlöcher angrenzenden Mikrorissbildung beruhen auf einer Studie über die aus dem ZEDEX-Tunnel gewonnenen Gesteinsproben und deren Fortsetzung im Untertage-Labor Äspö (Hard Rock Laboratory, HRL) in Schweden und im Forschungstunnel bei Olkiluoto in Finnland. Die neue und reaktivierte Rissbildung basiert auf den Auswertungsergebnissen der Schlitze, die bei dem ZEDEX-Projekt ins Gestein geschnitten wurden. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in cooperation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), conducted over 200 hours of melting tests to vitrify residues from five municipal waste combustion facilities. Combined residues (grate residue and f1yash) from three municipal waste combustors, a waste water treatment sludge combustor, and flyash from a refuse-derived-fuel (RDF) boiler, were sequentially melted in a I-metric-ton (mt) water-cooled-wall electric arc furnace. Each of the residues underwent magnetic separation, screen size analysis, and bulk chemical analysis prior to melting. The furnace products were examined by optical and electron microscopy and by X-ray diffraction. Bulk chemical analyses were acquired for the metal, fume, and vitrified furnace products. The material balance for the furnace operation indicates that from 69 to 86 pct of the feed reported to the vitrified furnace product, which had leaching potentials well below the EPA limit for each metal, as determined by the EPA TCLP. The electric arc melting furnace currently is being utilized in a cooperative research project between the USBM and the Idaho National Engineering 'Laboratory (INEL) for melting tests on simulated low-level radioactive wastes,

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept.9, 2006 at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are Earl H. Beistline (1916 to present), R.A.F. Penrose (1863-1931), Robert M. Reininger (1912-2006) and John Stanton (1830-1906). The inductions will bring to 193 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. Experimentation with seismic velocity measurements at Kennecott Copper Corp.&apos;s Bingham mine disclosed that some recognized slide areas are characterized by low velocity profiles. A new traverse technique employed during the investigation allows rapid and precise measurements of a quantity referred to as "apparent velocity." This value is a weighted average of the actual velocity in the overbreak zone near the surface and in the intact rock at depth. The low points on the velocity profile are apparently the result of lower actual velocities and deeper overbreak in less competent material within the slide zones. Experience verifies the usefulness and practicality of the technique in delineating adverse areas prior to detectable failure. The technique may be employed as a rapid and economic means of slope stability surveillance in large open pit mines.

Radial gas holdup profiles were measured in a 50-cm-diam, 400-cm-high flotation column using a multi-cell-conductivity probe. Three bubble-generation systems, including a system with up to eight vertical filter-cloth spargers, a system with three horizontal filter-cloth spargers and a system with three (horizontal) Cominco-type spargers, were examined. The variables investigated were the number of spargers, the symmetry of their arrangement and the height above the spargers. Batch water containing up to 20 ppm frother was used. Generally, the profiles tended to be uniform (flat) with some profiles exhibiting a slight "wavy" pattern. The vertical sparger arrangement proved to be the most difficult in which to achieve a profile symmetry. The horizontal spargers gave uniform profiles at right angles to their length but gave decreasing gas holdup along their length. The Cominco-type spargers gave slightly less scatter in the data. Switching off selected spargers to simulate a malfunction did not produce strong asymmetry in the profiles.

The redox reactions that occur on pyrrhotite and pentlandite in contact with oxygenated deionized water were examined using voltammetry. Reactions were put forward in which both minerals were progressively hydroxylated to form thermodynamically metastable surface intermediate products. These intermediates were modelled as metal deficient sulphides where a sulphurous layer was coordinated onto the remaining metal sites via polysulphides. Prior to hydroxylation pentlandite exhibited changes in the surface stoichiometry which were not related to pH effects. The formation of polysuiphide-sulphur intermediates were believed to promote collectorless; flotability for the two minerals. Microflotation tests (0.3 g samples) verified that the surface potential and particle size affected the flotation response, excessive oxidation inhibiting the minerals&apos; flotability. Larger scale tests using ore samples (30 g) confirmed that the extent of pulp oxidation, particle size distribution and the presence of frothers affected the flotation response, the findings being in accordance with the postulated model for the hydrophobic species generated on the pentlandite and pyrrhotite surfaces.

Having passed through a number of previous phases the best longwall results in Australia have shown a significant increase in the last two years. The results expected from a longwall face can be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the utilisation, and the available operating hours. Back analysis of the results achieved suggests that, on average, recent improvements arise from the higher capacity equipment recently installed; the utilisation has in fact reduced slightly. Review of the constraints which limit the longwall results, i.e. shearer speed, AFC capacity, support, advance rate, and man travel speed, shows that little improvement can be expected in the ideal production rate in thinner seams. In thicker seams the AFC often proves the overriding constraint and further increase in equipment size could lead to increased future ideal production rates and is expected. In all cases a concerted effort to increase the utilisation achieved is likely. For deep mines with thin to medium seams this offers the most viable path to improvement; by contrast thick seams with highwall/shallow access may benefit from further increase in equipment size.

This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

"THE November issue of the Bulletin carried in it ""Origin of the New Bruns1viclc Gypsum Deposits"" by J. Olaf Sund. This paper was a digested account of a Master's thesis at the University of New Brunswick which was a very useful compendium of information of gyp-sum in New Brunswick. It was a warded the President' s Gold .Medal and the First Prize in the Graduates' Section of the Students' Essay Competition. The present writer presents his congratulations to the winner of the competition. At the same time he must comment on the use of certain terms and on certain conclusions presented in the paper.The term ""unconformable"" has been used in several places in the paper to describe the relationship of gypsum to anhydrite in various deposits in New Brunswick in a sense which is quite alien to the accepted meaning. It has long been known tl1at the gypsum at the surface or near the surface in deposits in the Atlantic Provinces has come from hydration of anhydrite by surface and ground waters. The gyp-sum must be looked upon then as an alteration or even a weathering product. It cannot in this sense be called ""unconformable"" and thus arguments using the word in the accepted sense are invalid."

"1 Introduction The regrettable death of James S. Cunningham, Foreman Miner, attached to Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 2, while wearing a half-hour type oxygen breathing apparatus in a gasoline storage tank at Trinidad, Colorado, raised the question as to the possibility of gasoline vapors permeating the rubberized fabric of the breathing bags of such apparatus.It is known that most gases and especially certain organic vapors permeate rubber, by solution or a similar process. The rubber becomes saturated with the gas and if a concentration of gas is maintained on one side of the rubber sheet it slowly gives off gas from the other side. It of course takes some time for the gas to diffuse through the rubber and the length of time before it reaches the other side is proportional to the thickness of the rubber. The amount of gas that passes through per unit of area in unit time increases with the concentration of gas and also varies with the structure and composition of the rubber.It has been suggested that the gasoline vapor could not have penetrated into the interior of an oxygen breathing bag because the pressure is greater on the inside, but this is not true as the process of permeation by solution in the rubber is affected only by the difference in the partial pressures of gasoline vapor on the inside and outside of the bag. The positive oxygen pressure on the inside can only prevent the entrance of gasoline vapor through measurable holes, and has no effect on permeation by diffusion through the rubber."
